It’s About Time... “Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana”. - G.M.(?) (January 25, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90063 90063-21667694@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 25, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Does time indeed fly (or flow)? What defines the arrow of time? Why can we remember the past but not the future? Is time, like space, continually being created?
These are some of the questions we'll ponder in this course, based on a Great Courses series by Laura Helmuth, editor in chief of Scientific American, "Examining the big questions of time". (Spoiler alert: we won't find answers to these questions.)
Instructor Craig Stephan is a retired industrial physicist who has led many previous OLLI courses including "The End of Time", "The Science of Climate Change", "Cosmology", and "Paleontology".
This study group will meet Tuesdays beginning January 25 through March 1.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

In many criminal trials, judges are not allowed to inform juries of the sentences that a defendant may face if convicted. This prohibition is commonly justified on the grounds that informing juries about sentencing would “inject irrelevant considerations into the jury’s deliberations as to guilt.” Unfortunately, this justification is missing something big. In this talk, I argue that there is an important reason for jurors to know the potential consequences of a conviction—namely, without this knowledge, jurors may be unable to grasp the legal standard of proof that they are being asked to apply.

Conflicting Appearances, Suspension of Judgment, and Pyrrhonian Skepticism without Commitment (February 4, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91628 91628-21681047@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 4, 2022 3:00pm

Title: Conflicting Appearances, Suspension of Judgment, and Pyrrhonian Skepticism without Commitment

Abstract: By means of the Ten Modes, Pyrrhonian skeptics appeal to
conflicting appearances to bring about suspension of judgment.
However, precisely how the skeptic might do so in a non-dogmatic
manner is not entirely clear and raises broader questions concerning
the rationality of Pyrrhonian skepticism. In this paper, I argue
against existing accounts of the Modes and defend an alternative
account which better explains the logical structure, rational nature,
and effectiveness of the Modes. In particular, I clarify how the Modes
appeal to concerns about epistemic impartiality and circularity, the
nature of the skeptic’s non-doxastic attitude(s), and how the skeptic
can employ the Modes non-dogmatically.

People are increasingly using data and evidence from scientific studies to inform decisions, both in industry and in their personal lives. However, evidence-based reasoning presents many challenges, such as misinterpreting data, focusing on irrelevant data, and accepting evidence that conflicts with prior beliefs. In this talk, I will discuss how using theories from cognitive science can inform learning interventions to improve scientific and statistical literacy so that people can evaluate evidence more critically and objectively.

U-M graduate student Aaron Glasser (Philosophy) will present "Affect in Action."

ABSTRACT
Obsessive thinking is a problem case for the philosophy of mental action, insofar as it both (1) feels passive but (2) manifests our agency. Our solution to this “Puzzle of Obsessive Action” rests on a fundamental distinction between what we call “occurrent” and “aggregative” agency. Occurrent agency reflects the agent’s capacity to guide her current behavior and thoughts as they unfold over time. We argue that obsessive thinking is a form of occurrent mental agency, since the agent’s attention is guided at the personal level, endorsed, and resistible. Our paper’s first contribution is therefore to argue for the heterodox views that obsessive thinking is active and, therefore, that action can be grounded in affect. Why, then, do obsessive thoughts feel passive? We argue that this is because they undermine aggregative agency. Aggregative agency reflects the agent’s capacity to organize and distribute her actions over time. Although each episode of obsessive thinking is guided, the sheer frequency of those episodes undermines the agent's ability to organize her mental life. Obsessive thinking is therefore occurrently active but aggregatively passive. Our paper’s second contribution is therefore to use obsessive thinking as a wedge to pry these forms of agency apart.

What It Takes to Make a Word (Token) (March 10, 2022 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/93184 93184-21701509@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 10, 2022 6:00pm

What It Takes to Make a Word (Token)
Consider the following object, where, depending on how you are viewing this abstract, the object is likely a portion of a matrix of pixels through or from which light is emitted,
auge
Let’s call the object ‘Shape’. Is Shape a word token? If so, what word type is it a token of? Given how words are traditionally individuated (at least lexicographically), the Spanish, “auge”—meaning, apogee or peak—the French, “auge”—meaning, basin or bowl—and the German, “auge”—meaning, eye—are different words. They are chance false friends. The words have different etymologies, meanings, and canonical pronunciations and, thereby, are distinct word types, despite (by chance) being orthographically identical. So, if Shape is a word token (which we’ve yet to establish), is it a token of the Spanish, “auge”, the French, “auge”, the German, “auge”, or some combination of the three? Additionally, what grounds an answer to the previous question? Generalizing beyond Shape and matrices of pixels as a potential medium for word tokens,
(Central Question) When does something, x—e.g., some utterance, inscription, manual gesture, etc.—constitute a token of a word type, w, as opposed to some other word type, x*, or no word at all?
In this talk, I argue against a popular intentionalist answer to Central Question according to which (roughly put) something, x, constitutes a token of a word type, w, when one generates x with the intention to generate a token w (or a suitably similar intention). Given that word tokens are artifacts, the intentionalist answer to Central Question is indicative of a broader and widely held assumption in the literature on the metaphysics of artifacts, namely, that artifacts are intention-dependent—something, x, is an artifact of type, t, only if x was produced with the intention to produce an artifact of type t (Juvshik 2021).
As I demonstrate, intention has little to no role to play in an answer to Central Question or, more broadly, an account of artifacts. I argue that our (tacit) knowledge of how to perform various complex actions, like generating word tokens through speech, is not something that must be intentionally accessed, reasoned with, and utilized in governing behavior in some fully top-down intentional manner. We can exhibit a host of complex and context sensitive behavior that constitutes an exercise of our competence with/knowledge of how to act within an environment without intention playing an initiating, guiding, or sustaining role.

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Erin Schrödinger wrote a book titled "What is Life?". The ideas in that book served as an inspiration for Crick and Watson in their discovery of DNA.
Nobel laureate biologist Paul Nurse's similarly-titled 2020 book brings Schrödinger's up to date and discusses five "great ideas" that distinguish life: the cell, genes, evolution, life as chemistry, and as information. We will discuss these ideas and more. Please read the first two chapters for our first meeting.
Instructor Craig Stephan is a retired industrial physicist who has led many previous OLLI courses including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, The Aging Brain, Consciousness and the Brain, and Paleontology. This study group will meet Tuesdays beginning March 15 through April 5.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Sara Aronowitz is a former UM grad student who's now at the University of Arizona. Sara will be giving the talk over zoom (info below) entitled
"A Planning Theory of Belief" on Tuesday, March 15 at 4:30pm EST.

Abstract: What does it mean to hold a belief? Some ways of speaking suggest that to hold a belief is to have something in your mind: beliefs are things we acquire, defend, recover, and so on (Abelson, 1986). That is, believing is a matter of being in a state of having a thing. I will argue for an alternative: believing is something we do. First, I'll show that state-based accounts lead us into problems in two related areas: believing in between active occurrent episodes, and incoherent sets of beliefs. I'll then present an analogy between belief and planning that fleshes out what it would mean for belief to be an activity.

Does Cryptocurrency Have a Future? (March 25, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/93617 93617-21706429@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 25, 2022 12:00pm

It’s increasingly hard to find anyone to seriously defend the current state of cryptocurrencies. The predominant use of cryptocurrencies is speculation, which is almost certain to result in a bubble and crash. The second most common use is for fraud and crime of one kind or another. The largest currencies, notably BitCoin, are now among the most egregious contributors to climate change.

In this informal talk and discussion, Nathaniel Borenstein will explain how the very concept of cryptocurrency has been hijacked by people and groups with personal or political agendas. In particular, he will try to separate the current generation of cryptocurrencies and their problems from the wider range of digital currencies that have existed in the past and are likely to exist in the future, and will discuss how, if they were better designed and regulated, cryptocurrencies might yet play a valuable role in the economy.

Nathaniel hopes for a lively discussion rather than just a lecture. While he will not hide his beliefs, he will try to be aware of and transparent about his own biases, and welcomes a constructive discussion with anyone holding opposing views.

Nathaniel Borenstein has been an Internet innovator since 1980. In 1994, he founded the first online payment system, First Virtual Holdings, and in 2000, he founded the first network-based point-of-sale system, NetPOS. He has followed developments in online payments since the 1980's, and he sees Bitcoin as a genuine threat to human civilization.

Our Errors are Invisible to Us (March 31, 2022 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94172 94172-21723570@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 31, 2022 6:00pm

This meeting will be in person at Angell Hall G168. Please fill out the RSVP form as we have limited capacity for in-person meetings.

Our Errors are Invisible to Us
Every judgment we make requires a second one--whether to be confident or hesitant about it. I discuss psychological research on the vagaries of reaching accurate confidence assessments of our judgments, in particular the intrinsic problem of anticipating when we are wrong. Our errors are often invisible to us because they don't look like errors at the time. Other people, however, have a better chance at spotting those errors than we do.

2022 Ferrando Lecture: Self-Interest and the Post-Individual (March 31, 2022 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/92612 92612-21693689@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 31, 2022 7:30pm
Location: Palmer Commons
Organized By: Program in Philosophy, Politics & Economics

Join us at 7:30pm on March 31st in the Palmer Commons Forum Hall for the 2022 Ferrando Lecture given by Yancey Strickler:
"Self-Interest and the Post-Individual"

Self-interest and the post-individual

Our definition of “self” has changed considerably in the past two decades. We are no longer defined as merely physical or even spiritual beings — we contain multitudes of selves — physical, tribal, digital, virtual, spiritual — that coexist inside us. This is producing a new human experience: the post-individual. The post-individual is a state of being in which liberated individuals carry multiple, overlapping, group-based identities that are extensions of their self, that define who they are, that are more theoretical in nature, and that fill the space previous generations reserved for relationships with others. The post-individual isn't the end of the individual, it's a new hero's journey brought on by technology and the threat of global catastrophe. Join the writer and entrepreneur Yancey Strickler, founder of Kickstarter, Bentoism, The Creative Independent, and Metalabel, and the author of "This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World" as he explores the sweeping changes around and inside all of us.

MAP is excited to host Manon Garcia (Yale) for a Zoom talk next Tuesday (4/5) 12:30-2:30p.

Title: Submission

Abstract: "When analyzing unequal power relations, philosophers tend to use mostly the concepts of “domination” and “oppression”. The concept of “submission” is rarely if ever used and when it is, it is traditionally ben understood as autonomy abdication and therefore has been seen by moral and political philosophy as morally impermissible. Contrary to that view, this paper argues that submission is not simply autonomy abdication and that the concept of submission is a useful and illuminating addition to the conceptual vocabulary of power analysis. The conceptual analysis of submission proceeds in the following way: after I advocate for a broad, non-moralized understanding of the concept of submission; second, I develop a conceptual inquiry leading to a definition of the concept of submission, notably showing that submission is not the correlative of domination; and finally I demonstrate that the concept of submission enhances our understanding of power, and, in particular, opens a path to a deeper understanding of the social structure of patriarchy.”

Manon is an assistant professor of philosophy at Yale University. Her primary research is in political philosophy, feminist philosophy, moral philosophy, and philosophy of economics. Her two books are We Are Not Born Submissive: How Patriarchy Shapes Women's Lives and La Conversation des sexes: Philosophie du consentement (The Conversation of the Sexes: Philosophy of Consent). She also works on questions in 20th Century French philosophy, critical theory, philosophy of social sciences, and phenomenology.

"Against Risk-Aversion”- E-WIP/MMP Talk (May 9, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94806 94806-21773473@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, May 9, 2022 4:00pm

Title: "Against Risk-Aversion”
Abstract: It is widely thought that some degree of risk-aversion is rationally and ethically permissible. For example, in a choice between saving one person for sure and taking a ¼ chance of saving five people... many believe that we can be permitted to favor the guaranteed rescue over the risky gamble—even though the gamble saves more expected lives. If you attend this talk, you'll hear my best efforts to argue against this consensus. Specifically, it will be argued that non-maximizing risk-aversion conflicts with a conjunction of two attractive principles. The first principle asserts that, if you're comparing two options, and one of them gives a particular person a greater chance of rescue and affects nothing else, then you are required to favor that option. The second principle asserts that if you are required to choose X when the available options are X, Y, and some other alternatives... then you must still be required to choose X when the available options are only X and Y. Finally, it will be discussed how this argument differs from existing arguments against risk-aversion, which traditionally appeal to the fact that the risk-averse agent is likely to lose out in the long run. The argument we'll explore does not rely upon this observation and can be presented in the context of a single decision.

Anglophone interpretations of Ruism most often take inspiration from Aristotle or Dewey. Yet the 20th century New Ruists in Hong Kong and Taiwan said little about either and focused much more on Kant. This talk examines what they saw in Kantian philosophy, and how it influenced their interpretation of Ruist thought.

Abstract:
Anishinaabe (Odawa, Bodewadmi, and Ojibwe) legal and political philosophy is buried under the infrastructure of modern self-determination law and policy. Modern Anishinaabe tribes are rough copies of American governments. The Anishinaabeg (people) usually choose their ogemaag (leaders) through an at-large election process that infects tribal politics with individualized self-interest. Those elected leaders, what I call ogemaakaan (artificial leaders) preside over modern governments that encourage hierarchy, political opportunism, and tyranny of the majority. While modern tribal governments are extraordinary successes compared to the era of total federal control, a significant number of tribes face intractable political disputes that can traced to the philosophical disconnect from culture and tradition.

Anishinaabe philosophy prioritizes ogemaag who are deferential and serve as leaders only for limited purposes and times. Ogemaag are true representatives who act only when and how instructed to do so by their constituents. Their decisions are rooted in cultural and traditional philosophies, including for example Mino-Bimaadiziwin (the act of living a good life), Inawendewin (relational accountability), Niizhwaaswii Mishomis/Nokomis Kinoomaagewinawaan (the Seven Gifts the Grandfathers or Grandmothers), and the Dodemaag (clans). I offer suggestions on how modern tribal government structures can be lightly modified to restore much of this philosophy.

Explainability Is Not the Solution to Structural Challenges to AI in Medicine

Explainability is often treated as a necessary condition for ethical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine. In this brief talk I survey some of the structural challenges facing the development and deployment of effective AI systems in health care to illustrate some of the limitations to explainability in addressing these challenges. This talk builds on prior work (London 2019, 2022) to illustrate how ambitions for AI in health care likely require significant changes to key aspects of health systems.

Melissa McCradden, PhD, MHSc
Director of AI in Medicine
The Hospital for Sick Children
On the Inextricability of Explainability from Ethics: Explainable AI does not Ethical AI Make

Explainability is embedded into a plethora of legal, professional, and regulatory guidelines as it is often presumed that an ethical use of AI will require explainable algorithms. There is considerable controversy, however, as to whether post hoc explanations are computationally reliable, their value for decision-making, and the relational implications of their use in shared decision-making. This talk will explore the literature across these domains and argue that while post hoc explainability may be a reasonable technical goal, it should not be offered status as a moral standard by which AI use is judged to be ‘ethical.’

Artificial Intelligence and Human Values, U-M Obert C. Tanner Lecture (November 2, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100111 100111-21799222@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 2, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Michigan Engineering

Eric Horvitz' lecture is hosted by the University of Michigan in partnership with Michigan Engineering. U-M is one of nine institutions worldwide that hosts an annual Tanner Lecture on Human Values.

This is a two part event that includes a keynote lecture and a panel discussion with lunch the following day. Both are in-person, but a live stream will be available.

PART 1: KEYNOTE - Wednesday, November 2, 4:00 pm Rackham Amphitheater
AI advancements have been motivated and inspired by human intelligence for decades. How can we use AI to expand our knowledge and understanding of the world and ourselves? How can we leverage AI to enrich our lives?

In his Tanner Lecture, Eric Horvitz will explore these questions and more, tracing the arc of intelligence from its origins and evolution in humans, to its manifestations and prospects in the tools we create and use. Along this arc, he’ll highlight several key milestones and recent breakthroughs in AI that have enabled new tools and deeper understandings of the computational foundations of intelligence.

He will emphasize the importance and potential of creating and applying AI systems that can collaborate closely with people and highlight directions forward with examples of systems that leverage, complement, and augment human capabilities.

Finally, his talk will address challenges and opportunities ahead, as we develop and deploy powerful AI tools that will extend our reasoning and imagination in new ways. Horvitz will make the case that this is a pivotal moment to engage in a cross-sector dialogue about the development, use, and governance of AI technologies to ensure that they reflect and respect our values and aspirations as individuals and society.

Moderated by Ben Kuipers, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Michigan Engineering.

Introductions by Santa Ono, President of the University of Michigan and Alec D. Gallimore, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering at the University of Michigan.

ABOUT TANNER LECTURES
Tanner Lectures are funded through the generosity of the late University of Utah Professor of Philosophy, industrialist, and philanthropist, Obert Clark Tanner, and his wife, Grace Tanner.

Professor Tanner wrote: I hope these lectures will contribute to the intellectual and moral life of mankind. I see them simply as a search for a better understanding of human behavior and human values. This understanding may be pursued for its own intrinsic worth, but it may also eventually have practical consequences for the quality of personal and social life.

Although the Tanners established the supporting endowment in 1978, Joel Feinberg's April 1977 lecture at U-M inaugurated the international series of Tanner Lectures. Each year, U-M has a Tanner Lecture combined with an interdisciplinary symposium to which we invite distinguished scholars from around the world.

These events are free and open to the public.

LHS Collaboratory November Session

Speaker:

Kadija Ferryman, PhD
Assistant Professor
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

In this talk, Professor Ferryman will discuss the merits and challenges of conducting health equity reviews of artificial intelligence (AI) tools used in health and medicine. The talk will examine how interdisciplinary approaches from the social sciences, bioethics and humanities, and computational fields can be involved in the development of concepts, methods, frameworks, and guidelines for understanding and governing digital health tools.

Dr. Kadija Ferryman is a cultural anthropologist who studies the social, cultural, and ethical implications of health information technologies. Specifically, her research examines how genomics, digital medical records, artificial intelligence, and other technologies impact racial disparities in health. As a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Data & Society Research Institute in New York, she led the Fairness in Precision Medicine research study, which examines the potential for bias and discrimination in predictive precision medicine.

She earned a BA in Anthropology from Yale University, and a PhD in Anthropology from The New School for Social Research. Before completing her PhD, she was a policy researcher at the Urban Institute where she studied how housing and neighborhoods impact well-being, specifically the effects of public housing redevelopment on children, families, and older adults.

Understanding Demonization

In the age of individual responsibility, those at the bottom of the income hierarchy are routinely shamed. Out-of-work benefits claimants are subject to particularly severe forms of vilification, their unemployment being portrayed as resulting from personal failings. When these shortcomings are constructed as moral failings, we enter the space of what I call “demonization”. Demonization is the portrayal of individuals as wicked threats to the community and as worthy of deep moral contempt for their alleged behavior. Benefits recipients are demonized when they undergo sustained attacks on their moral character, when they are viewed as deliberately choosing idleness over hard work. The trope of the lazy free rider living at taxpayers’ expense is remarkably uniform across advanced economies and has been an effective strategy to undermine support for welfare. Because demonization diminishes its target’s moral standing, it pauses a critical threat to our ability to stand as equals, which contemporary theorists allege to be an essential component of a just and democratic society. Starting from the example of benefits recipients, my paper identifies several morally significant steps in the workings of demonization, clarifies its social function, and characterizes precisely what makes it wrong

A Stoic and Socratic Theory of Motivation

Stoic moral psychology—dominant for several centuries within the Greek and Roman philosophical tradition—centrally includes a phenomenon designated by the Greek term hormê, which translators have variously rendered as appetitio, 'conation,' 'impulse,' 'desire,' Trieb, tendance, and (more recently) 'effort.' Hormai, of which the pathê or emotions are central instances, are characterized in the Greek sources both as representations with proposition-like content and as motions in some way directed towards an intentional object. Accordingly, they puzzlingly appear to have, and perhaps even to integrate, both belief- and desire-like features. I consider this element of Stoic theory against both its Socratic background and contemporary accounts of motivation.

Title: “I accuse you”: Black feminism, solidarity, conflict, and intersectionality

Abstract: This talk draws on black feminist theory to ask what happens when one’s political and personal commitments conflict with your allies’. Given the vulnerability of multiply marginalized groups, how do individuals and larger social movements navigate conflicting positions and investments? What can black feminist thought and history teach us about the dangers of these conflicts?

The spring and summer of 1982 tend to be dominated in feminist historiography by the aftermath of the infamous 1982 Barnard Conference on Sexuality. Indeed, letters to the editors section of the July issue of off our backs from that year is dominated by reactions to the newspaper’s coverage of the conference. But a set of statements printed within that same issue would set off a new set of controversies and bitter, contentious disagreements between lesbian feminists –this time focused around racism, anti-semitism, and the 1982 Lebanon War. This controversy would reverberate for months afterwards in the pages of oob, in letters between individual feminists, and even at that year’s NWSA conference. This paper examines not the debate itself but rather how relationships and solidarities were disrupted by it.

Specifically, I examine an archive centered around a set of statements and letters about the Israel Palestine conflict and the 1982 Lebanon War. Two from the Jewish lesbian feminist group Di Vilde Chayes, one from the group Women Against Imperialism, a response to Di Vilde Chayes by black feminist writer June Jordan, and, finally, a response to Jordan’s letter by a group of feminists, including Audre Lorde and Barbara Smith. Through this archive, I seek to explore the stakes and consequences of lesbian feminist solidarities. When does coalition break down—both on the individual and group level—and what happens afterwards?

This case study taps into other instances I’m interested in where racial and ethnic differences create fissures where understanding might have been. What possibilities are foreclosed by this rupture and what can we, today, in this moment of a resurgence of antisemitism alongside right wing hatred, learn from these past failings.
