Art and Religion in the Cyclades (January 25, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90084 90084-21667717@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 25, 2022 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

With small picturesque ports, lively tavernas, and blue-domed churches clustered alongside white sandy beaches, the Cyclades are many people’s idyllic vision of Greece. In “Art and Religion in the Cyclades,” we will join Dr. Chris Adamson, a classical archaeologist and educator, as he explores the islands long and rich history through the religious art produced there over the last five millennia.

The lecture will examine the iconic minimalist figures of prehistoric “Cycladic Culture,” known to have influenced modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore; we will look more closely at some familiar (and less familiar) masterpieces of Classical Greece produced in the islands, including Venus de Milo; and we will navigate the development of Greek Christian art in the islands through to the modern period.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Conversations on Europe. Reinventing Tradition: Innovation and Transgression in Barcelona's Public Nativity Displays (February 7, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89731 89731-21665267@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 7, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for European Studies

Public displays of Christian symbols like the crèche have gone from being taken-for-granted elements of local tradition to objects of contestation in diverse European contexts due to pressures generated by secularization and religious diversification. Barcelona’s city government has responded creatively to these pressures by commissioning public crèches with highly abstract designs that dilute their religious symbolism, thereby rendering them more compatible with principles of separation and neutrality, and with the progressive image, the city wishes to project. This strategy of “aesthetic transmutation” represents an alternative to other possible responses, such as elimination or supplementation (i.e., adding minority religious symbols). In analyzing its development, Astor employs an interactionist approach that elucidates how the stances and actions of diverse actors implicated in the process do not reflect rigid pre-established ideological positions on identity, church-state relations, or the place of religion in the public sphere, but rather respond flexibly to situational interactions, pressures, and opportunities. His findings have implications for how sociologists conceptualize religious icons, the forces driving their transformation, and the role of interactive contexts in shaping how such transformation unfolds.

Avi Astor is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and is part of the Research Center for the Sociology of Religion (ISOR). He obtained his PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 2011. He has written on a variety of topics related to religion, culture, and identity. He is the author of *Rebuilding Islam in Contemporary Spain* (Sussex, 2017). His work has appeared in several prominent journals, including Theory and Society, the J*ournal for the Scientific Study of Religion*, *Qualitative Sociology*, the *International Migration Review*, the *Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies*, and the *International Journal for Urban and Regional Research*.

The biblical book of Lamentations is a brief but powerful work of ancient poetry that responds to the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylonians in the sixth century BCE. It includes the character of Daughter Zion, a feminized personification of Jerusalem who is subjected to sexual violence. While the Bible contains many stories of raped women, Daughter Zion is almost alone among female victims in having a ‘voice” in the text. As a result, there is a pronounced tendency to treat her as an ideal and praiseworthy victim/survivor. However, this representation is both problematic and contradicted by her own speeches. In response, this talk describes Daughter Zion as a “gritty” survivor with a fuzzy, messy, and icky survival story. This survival story comes into focus when read together with other survivor texts, including Jennifer Patterson’s Queering Sexual Violence, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha’s Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice, and Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House. Together, these texts form a “survivor archive” that changes the way we encounter biblical and nonbiblical sexual violence.

Lecture by Dr. Shayna Sheinfeld; Q&A with Sara Parks and Meredith J.C. Warren

How do we remember Jewish and Christian women in the ancient world? Are they merely passive, accepting what comes at them, or do they have agency in a patriarchal imperialist world? This talk explores several examples of Jewish and Christian women’s resistance—against patriarchy, imperialism, and even their own families—in order to demonstrate the diverse ways that women effected change in the world of ancient Judaism and Christianity.

This is a hybrid event. The event will take place at the Michigan League, Henderson Room. Please use the link provided to register for the Zoom option.
