We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

* Theresa Landrum (48217 community organizer & activist);
* Vincent Martin (Detroit community activist);

The disproportionate impacts of disasters for communities of color have been documented repeatedly for both natural and human-caused disasters. In Michigan:
* More than 500,000 Michigan residents live within one mile of a facility storing large amounts of extremely hazardous chemicals;
* Those residents are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and confront daily risks of spills, explosions, and other environmental disasters at the facilities, as well as from the transport of chemicals to and from them through their communities;
* Children of color are more than two times as likely as white children in Michigan to live in the shadow of facilities housing hazardous substances.

This event, organized by Detroit community leaders with support from local academic institutions, will:
* Discuss why emergency preparedness and response is an environmental and climate justice issue;
* Describe gaps and challenges in Detroit’s emergency preparedness and response, from and environmental and climate justice perspective;
* Share recommendations for improving emergency preparedness and response for environmental and climate justice communities.

Organized By: Residential College

Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible.

When paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist.

There is an additional assumption that those who identify as women, queer, trans, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such.

In an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices, this exhibition brings together women, queer, trans, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion, their other identities (be those related to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or status as artists), and their practices.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: UNICEF at the University of Michigan

This year, for our second annual gala, UNICEF-UM is focusing on ending child marriage in the United States of America. UNICEF defines child marriage as "a harmful practice and a violation of child rights and believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances, everywhere." Both UNICEF and the United Nations declare child marriage a human rights violation.

While our gala seeks to celebrate the work of our incredible members over the past academic year, and recognize and send off our seniors, we also hope to inspire our university community to take action with us in an effort to protect children.

UNICEF at Michigan also welcomes three special guests:

Dr. Fatma Müge Göçek: Dr. Göçek is UNICEF UM's faculty advisor and Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan.

Her research focuses on the comparative analysis of history, politics, and gender in the first and third worlds. She critically analyzes the impact of processes such as development, nationalism, religious movements, and collective violence on minorities. She is currently working on a theory book, constructing social theory from the vantage point of minorities. Learn more here.

Paul Callejas: Paul is a Community Engagement Associate for the Midwestern United States and has become an integral connection for UNICEF UM's members who are eager to take their commitment to UNICEF USA to the next level. We welcome Paul as our special guest to thank him for his immense efforts in community mobilization and youth empowerment.

Paul grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Being a product of the public school system, Paul believes that all youth deserve an equal chance of success. He has defeated many socioeconomic barriers as an indigenous man from Guerrero, Mexico; Paul has over six years of youth development and project planning, working with various non-profit organizations. He aspires to help as many Chicago teens reach their potential and become global citizens. Learn more here.

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, there is space to report that in the registration, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
April 5, 2022
12:00 - 1:00 EST

Stephanie Morales is a second-year Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan's Program in Survey and Data Science. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Sociology. She is interested in cross-cultural surveys, measurement error in data collection with racial/ethnic minorities, and adaptive survey design.

Assessing Cross-Cultural Comparability of Self-Rated Health and Its Conceptualization through Web Probing

Self-rated health (SRH) is a widely used question across different fields, as it is simple to administer yet has been shown to predict mortality. SRH asks respondents to rate their overall health typically using Likert-type response scales (i.e., excellent, very good, good, fair, poor). Although SRH is commonly used, few studies have examined its conceptualization from the respondents’ point of view and even less so for differences in its conceptualization across diverse populations. We aim to assess the comparability of SRH across different cultural groups by investigating the factors that respondents consider when responding to the SRH question. We included an open-ended probe asking what respondents thought when responding to SRH in web surveys conducted in five countries: Great Britain, Germany, the U.S., Spain, and Mexico. In the U.S., we targeted six racial/ethnic and linguistic groups: English-dominant Koreans, Korean-dominant Koreans, English-dominant Latinos, Spanish-dominant Latinos, non-Latino Black Americans, and non-Latino White Americans. One novelty of our study is allowing multiple attribute codes (e.g., health behaviors, illness) per respondent and tone (e.g., in the direction of positive or negative health or neutral) of the probing responses for each attribute, allowing us 1) to assess respondents’ thinking process holistically and 2) to examine whether and how respondents mix attributes. Our study compares the number of reported attributes and tone by cultural groups and integrates SRH responses in the analysis. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of SRH by revealing the cognitive processes among diverse populations and is expected to shed light on its cross-cultural comparability.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)
The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business, public health, natural resources, law, medicine, nursing, social work, and many other domains of study.

On May 5th, 1991, people took to the streets of Washington D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood to protest the police shooting of Daniel Gomez, a young man from El Salvador. Through testimony, song, poetry, and street theatre, La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered weaves together the collective memory of one of D.C.’s first barrios, and dives into the roots of the ‘91 rebellion. As people across the world take to the streets to demand an end to police brutality, the film honors the largely untold stories that have come before us, and explores how artists prompt us to remember what we still have to fight for.

The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s and, later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that experience is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us and that universal education is the key to democracy.

This year, Ginsberg Center, is collaborating with Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum and University of Michigan Museum of Art, to host a dialogue on the intersection of community, identity, public spaces, and environmental justice. We will also offer additional opportunities to explore MBGNA including garden tours and a scavenger hunt.

We hope you can join us for a restorative and engaging event!

A specialist in twentieth-century American politics, urban history, civil rights, and race, he is the author of four books, among them The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit (1996) and Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North (2008). Location:
Organized By: School for Environment and Sustainability

After three years of COVID, we are emerging from multiple crises: global pandemic, economic downturn and mass inflation, and a crisis of racial inequality. Earth Day 2023: Justice in Focus seeks to put justice and Earth in the same conversation, removing the silos of environment, human social systems, and political ecology. The University of Michigan, led by the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment at the School for Environment and Sustainability, will bring forth a critical dialogue with emerging and powerful leaders on the frontlines. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from local and national leaders on the inner workings of organizations, solutions, and leadership that emerged through the pandemic.
New Times, Dynamic Leadership

Locally and nationally over the last few years, we were put to the challenge, navigating COVID, racism, and economic crises in the age of climate catastrophe. Leaders all over the nation were asked to step up. Communities historically disinvested struggled to get basic resources while federal and state resources were lagging behind. And yet, we can only imagine more crises unfolding as climate change unfolds.

New times, dynamic leadership asks emerging leaders how they used skills, resources, and social networks to navigate the complex challenges before us. What have we learned through the pandemic? What is needed amidst what’s been called the largest Civil Rights movement in the United States? How must we transform our systems to meet these challenges as climate catastrophe unfolds?

RSVP here: https://www.cew.umich.edu/events/cewinspire-workshop-series-understanding-and-addressing-racial-inequities-in-lupus

Facilitated by Kourtney Pony, MD/MBA Candidate, University of Michigan; Rachel Bergmans, MPH, PhD, Research Investigator, University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology, Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center (CPFRC)

This workshop references work with the Community Advisory Board for Lupus Care and Research (Lupus CAB) as a starting point to discuss racial inequities in healthcare and lupus more specifically. The presentation will be co-led by Kourtney Pony (student lead for the Lupus CAB, 3rd-year medical student) and Dr. Rachel Bergmans (faculty co-leader for the CPFRC Health Equity Core). The workshop will be a mixture of a lecture and group discussion to highlight racial inequities in healthcare. Participants will be divided into groups to discuss a series of questions as each inequity is revealed and they will learn from data that address each response. The nuance this workshop aims to capture is that there is a history of mistreatment towards Black patients within medicine, and there are still present-day problems that we must address to reduce inequities in lupus care and research, as well as the healthcare system in general.

How Do We Think of Social Diversity: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta Mercado (April 17, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106684 106684-21814695@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 17, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Romance Languages & Literatures

Today’s call for diversity in the United States quite often reduces itself to body count. René Zavaleta Mercado (1937-1984), one of Latin America’s most imaginative social scientists, confronted the question of respecting diversity in the analysis of social reality in the twentieth century. *Towards a History of the National Popular in Bolivia*, now translated into English for the first time, confronts this question not only in terms of mere inclusion but in terms of a “motley” social situation, devising methodology to represent its demand.

Luis Tapia, our speaker, another imaginative Bolivian thinker and activist, is the leading expert on Zavaleta. In his own book, *The Production of Local Knowledge: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta Mercado*, also translated into English for the first time, he lays out an epistemological program to make Zavaleta’s injunction real. Tapia’s talk will evolve from a crucial question: ‘How do we have to change ourselves so that the idea of a “motley” society does not turn into voting blocs, destroying democracy?

Over the last five decades the City of Detroit has felt the crisis of mass incarceration first-hand and most acutely. Historian Heather Ann Thompson will discuss the origins of this crisis nationally and locally, its lived impact on city residents as well as on the city itself. From this history, she argues, we can better understand not only why this is the civil and human rights crisis of the 21st century, but what it will take to undo it.

Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:

Through their participation in this program, participants will:

Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The University of Michigan will celebrate the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Symposium. The theme of this year’s event is Systems Check: Exploring Structural Solutions to Systemic Racism.

Juneteenth events honor the progress of African Americans in the U.S. since the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 while continuing to recognize the ongoing efforts to overcome systemic injustices and inequities faced by Black communities. This year’s celebratory events include a community prayer breakfast, a black film festival, and the Kidz Zone tent at the Top of the Park. A host of panel discussions will highlight topics such as housing discrimination and voter suppression, to name a few.

Our hope is to enrich the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor communities by underscoring the importance of Juneteenth ensuring all students, staff, faculty, and residents feel a deep sense of belonging. We hope you can join us for our celebration while we advance our educational mission as a university and seek to empower the community in a longstanding annual tradition to promote Black liberation and excellence.

Talk Title
Queer Voices for Gender Inclusion, Too: Queer Realities Meet Harm Evaluation Frameworks for Generative AI

Abstract
Transgender and non-binary (TGNB) individuals disproportionately experience discrimination and exclusion from daily life. Given the recent popularity and adoption of generative AI and large language models (LLMs), the potential to further marginalize this population only grows. Assessing these systems for gender-inclusivity requires understanding how TGNB identities uniquely interact with dominant gender norms; crafting harm evaluations for TGNB persons must be guided by TGNB voices, different from gender binary-centric perspectives. Harm measurement frameworks inherently require centering TGNB voices to help guide the alignment between gender-inclusive Natural Language Generation (NLG) and whom they are intended to serve. In this talk, I discuss grounding LLM harm evaluation in the TGNB community and existing interdisciplinary literature to assess how the social reality surrounding experienced marginalization of TGNB persons contributes to and persists within Open Language Generation (OLG). This social knowledge serves as a guide for evaluating popular LLMs (ChatGPT, GPT-2, GPT-Neo, and OPT) on two key aspects: (1) misgendering and (2) gender disclosure. We discover a dominance of binary gender norms in the LLMs and consider what this means for understanding harms to users who don’t ascribe to the gender binary. Across the talk, I contextualize findings in commonly-used robotic manipulation datasets like OpenAI’s CLIP and explore what these insights mean for responsible robotics.

Speaker Bio
Anaelia Ovalle (they/them) is an Afro-Carribean, queer, and non-binary PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Advised by Prof. Kai-Wei Chang, Anaelia’s research centers the interfacing of ML design with algorithmic fairness objectives and the broader socio-technical milieu. With particular emphasis on historically marginalized communities, their research synergizes across both algorithmic fairness and critical social theory to guide approaches in mitigating AI-driven sociotechnical harms. Their work operates at 2 resolutions: (1) inclusive natural language processing and representation learning (e.g. how do we center trans communities in NLG, what does nonbinary exclusion mean and look like in a language context?) and (2) expanding AI ethics praxis (in both research and broader institutional mechanization) through intersectionality and participatory design. They have previously interned across several Responsible AI teams including Meta, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Alexa. Their research with Alexa was just accepted to ACM FAccT 2023. Prior to their PhD, Elia received a BS magna cum laude in Data Science from the University of San Francisco.

This talk is supported by an LGBTQ+ Project Grant from the Spectrum Center.

*Humanize the Numbers* presents the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons.

The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

Proudly presented by Prison Creative Arts Project, MI Radio, and The Guild of Artists & Artisans

The goal of *In And On Our Own Terms* is for each artist to tell a story from their own experience that would not typically be part of the broader narrative about mass incarceration.

The goal is not to define any artist by the experience of having been incarcerated, but rather to amplify a story that only that artist can tell—a story that is important to the artist to tell, and an opportunity to use the medium of theatre to share it with the community.

Through the Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program (DCERP), undergraduate students from the U-M spend the summer working with a wide variety of Detroit non-profits on research and creative projects led by the organizations themselves. DCERP fellows attend program meetings and form small collaborative learning groups that delve into topics of mutual interest, such as getting to know the city, its culture and history through a social justice lens, community engagement, personal growth and professional development.

Join us for a screening of *Master of Light* and discussion with artists and staff from the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP).

Master of Light is a beautiful documentary about George Anthony Morton, an artist who studied classical painting while incarcerated and returned to his hometown to reconnect with his family, painting their portraits to bond and heal. It’s a powerful, raw, hopeful film you don't want to miss!

The screening will be followed by a discussion about the transformative power of arts in prisons with artist Flint Kougar, Program Coordinator - Mary Heinen, and Arts Programming Coordinator - Emily Chase. This event is part of the *Shared Humanity* traveling art sale & exhibition.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde in 1983, Palestinian poet Mamud Darwish called Palestine “the Andalus of the possible.” Taking inspiration from Darwish’s words, this talk asks: what has the memory of al-Andalus (Muslim Iberia) made possible for Palestinian writers and thinkers? Since the early twentieth century, several prominent Palestinian writers have turned to the memory of al-Andalus to reflect on the political plight of their homeland, to decry occupation and cultural erasure, and to imagine a future for Palestine. Drawing on examples from this long tradition of Palestinian writing about al-Andalus, this talk maps the intersection of two diasporic imaginaries that have crisscrossed the Mediterranean: the Andalusi imaginary and the Palestinian one.

From the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City, a subsequent Off-Broadway transfer, and an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

Organized By: Residential College

Ann Arbor-based Klezmer band Klezmephonic plays and sings the story of the revival of Eastern European Jewish musicians.

After their near total annihilation in World War II, Klezmer and Yiddish are rising as the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors find the old melodies and wrap their tongues around the old language.

Violinist Henrik Karapetyan, clarinettist Eric Schweizer, vocalist Jennifer Goltz, bassist Dave Sharp, and percussionist Mike List perform and narrate Klezmer classics, nostalgic Yiddish ballads, and the kind of high energy dance tunes one audience member called “bright orange music.”

Amid frolicking freylekhs and sirbas, wailing clarinet and sobbing violin, Klezmephonic draws musical connections to resistance movements in Ukraine, Armenia, and across the world, tells a powerful story of tenacity, and proves that, for everyone suffering under oppression, persistence is resistance.

Devin Allen is a self-taught photographer who gained national attention when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was published on the cover of *Time* magazine in 2015. His book, *No Justice, No Peace: From the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter*, came out last year and he's the founder of a youth photography educational program called Through Their Eyes.

Imani Mixon was born and raised at the magnetic center of the world’s cultural compass — Detroit, Michigan. She is a long-form storyteller who is inspired by everyday griots who bear witness to their surroundings and report it back out. Equal parts urgent and essential, her multimedia work centers the experiences of Black women and independent artists.

Join us today as Imani Mixon talks to Devin Allen about his life and work, the tension between truth and beauty, capturing community, and maintaining authenticity.

This event is part of LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.*

Policy Talks at The Ford School: The Injustice of Place (October 4, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112093 112093-21828426@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 4, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Weill Hall (Ford School)
Organized By: Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

Join for a conversation with the co-authors of The Injustice of Place alongside Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee and Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan COO Nicole Sherard-Freeman. Released in August 2023, The Injustice of Place sheds light on America’s most disadvantaged communities, tracing the legacies of our nation’s places of deepest need—including inequalities shaping people’s health, livelihoods, and upward social mobility for families. Wrung dry by powerful forces and corrupt government officials, the “internal colonies” in these regions were exploited for their resources and then left to collapse.

The book's co-authors will reflect briefly on the book, followed by an armchair conversation with Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI) and Nicole Sherard-Freeman (COO, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan).

About The Injustice of Place
Three of the nation’s top scholars – known for tackling key mysteries about poverty in America – turn their attention from the country’s poorest people to its poorest places. Based on a fresh, data-driven approach, they discover that America’s most disadvantaged communities are not the big cities that get the most notice. Instead, nearly all are rural. Little if any attention has been paid to these places or to the people who make their lives there.

This revelation set in motion a five-year journey across Appalachia, the Cotton and Tobacco Belts of the Deep South, and South Texas. Immersing themselves in these communities, pouring over centuries of local history, attending parades and festivals, the authors trace the legacies of the deepest poverty in America—including inequalities shaping people’s health, livelihoods, and upward social mobility for families. Wrung dry by powerful forces and corrupt government officials, the “internal colonies” in these regions were exploited for their resources and then left to collapse.

The unfolding revelation in The Injustice of Place is not about what sets these places apart, but about what they have in common—a history of raw, intensive resource extraction and human exploitation. This history and its reverberations demand a reckoning and a commitment to wage a new War on Poverty, with the unrelenting focus on our nation’s places of deepest need.

Overview: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every aspect of our society and our lives. However, just like any emerging technology, AI’s impact varies greatly for different demographic groups, in different geographic regions, and is shaped by social conventions, culture, religion, economic realities, among many other factors. We invite everyone who is interested in understanding the impact of AI to join Marina Alsahawneh and Merve Hickok for a discussion of the impact of AI on women in the US and the Middle East. They will discuss gender biases in AI algorithms, opportunities and gender inequity in the AI-enabled workforce, and cyber-based violence against women. They will discuss how these intersect with the political, social, cultural, economic and religious features of different geographic regions.

Speakers:
Marina Alsahawneh, Gender and Inclusion Officer at Jordan Open Source Association

Merve Hickok, Responsible Data & AI Advisor, Michigan Institute for Data Science

Moderator:
Jing Liu, Executive Director, Michigan Institute for Data Science

Wallenberg Medal and Lecture | Lucas Benitez, Farmworker Leader (October 10, 2023 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105004 105004-21810558@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 10, 2023 7:30pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Wallenberg Lecture

Lucas Benitez, a co-founder of the Florida-based labor and human rights organization the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and a key organizational leader and member of the CIW’s Fair Food Program worker education team, will receive the Wallenberg Medal and deliver the keynote Wallenberg Lecture at 7:30pm on October 10th in Rackham Auditorium.

In addition to being one of the earliest farmworker leaders in the Fair Food movement, Benitez played a critical role in the investigation of several slavery cases, helping to free over 700 farmworkers in one case alone.

Born in Guerrero, Mexico, Mr. Benitez migrated at the age of 16 to Immokalee, Florida where he worked in the tomato fields. Working conditions, including poor wages, long hours, and a climate of intimidation and violence, prompted him to act and eventually to help found the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. Since it was founded in 1993, the CIW has used a range of strategies to raise awareness about working conditions for farmworkers and to advocate for their basic human rights. In addition to being one of the earliest farmworker leaders in the Fair Food movement, Benitez played a critical role in the investigation of several trafficking and slave labor cases, helping to free over 700 farmworkers in one case alone.

For his work with the CIW, Benitez has been called “one of the most visible farmworker leaders in the US” by the Los Angeles Times. On behalf of the Fair Food Program, Lucas Benitez traveled to the White House to accept the 2015 Presidential Award for Extraordinary Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons. Also on behalf of the Fair Food Program, he accepted the 2014 Clinton Global Citizen Award and the 2016 James Beard Leadership Award. Benitez has won numerous national and international awards, including the Rolling Stone Magazine Brick Award for “America’s Best Young Community Leader,” the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award, and, along with two co-workers, the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

“Lucas Benitez’s work with the CIW reflects the ongoing need for frontline advocates for vulnerable people in our society. This movement harnesses the economic influence of consumers to improve working conditions, labor practices, and pay for farmworkers through its worker-led, market-enforced approach to the protection of human rights underlying corporate supply chains,” said Sioban Harlow, Professor Emerita of Epidemiology and Global Public Health and chair of the Wallenberg Medal Selection Committee.

The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture honors the legacy of Raoul Wallenberg who graduated from U-M’s College of Architecture in 1935 and saved the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews near the end of World War II. In 1944, at the request of Jewish organizations and the American War Refugee Board, the Swedish Foreign Ministry sent Wallenberg on a rescue mission to Budapest. Over the course of six months, Wallenberg issued thousands of protective passports and placed many thousands of Jews in safe houses throughout the besieged city. He confronted Hungarian and German forces to secure the release of Jews, whom he claimed were under Swedish protection, and saved more than 80,000 lives.

Administered by the University’s Donia Human Rights Center, U-M awards the Wallenberg Medal to those who, through their actions and personal commitment, perpetuate Wallenberg’s extraordinary accomplishments and human values, and demonstrate the capacity of the human spirit to stand up for the helpless, to defend the integrity of the powerless, and to speak out on behalf of the voiceless.

The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture ceremony is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. Please direct any inquiries about the event and requests for event accommodations to wallenberglecture@umich.edu or 734-936-3973.

More Than "First Do No Harm": Modeling Global Engagement with the U-M/Ghana Partnership

Timothy R.B. Johnson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's & Gender Studies

Thursday, October 19, 2023; 7:00 pm

In 1986, Tim Johnson, then chair of obstetrics and gynecology in the U-M Medical School, traveled to Ghana as part of an initial group of Americans to reestablish relationships in medicine. The experience transformed him. Confronted with a shockingly high rate of maternal deaths that could have been prevented in the United States, Dr. Johnson launched a partnership with Ghanaian institutions for training Ob/Gyn health workers -- an unusual and singularly successful partnership, between U-M and Ghana, that continues to this day. The Ob/Gyn partnership led to further collaborations between U-M and Ghana, in other medical fields and beyond, including the social sciences and humanities. We are very excited to host this session with Dr. Johnson in connection with his new book on the partnership, More Than "First Do No Harm," which demonstrates that the partnership serves as vital model for global health collaborations.

Timothy Johnson MD is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Michigan where he was Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for twenty-four years. He is a high- risk obstetrician, and his research interests are fetal behavior, prenatal care, medical education and capacity building for health, global women’s health, global health ethics, and assessment and prevention of sexual harassment in academic medicine. He is active in international teaching and training. In 2022 he received the (UM) President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education. He has authored over 300 articles, chapters and books, and is an elected member of the (US) National Academy of Medicine.

For those attending in person, the event will be followed by tours of the Observatory, with observing if weather permits.

Making Art in Prison (October 22, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110811 110811-21825563@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 22, 2023 3:00pm

Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

Free and open to the public. No pre-registration required.

Janie Paul, co-founder of the *Annual Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prisons*, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project, along with formerly incarcerated artists will discuss the significance of making visual art in prison in connection with Paul’s recently published book, *Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance*. Using philosophical, aesthetic, and political lenses, they will share and explore various modes of resistance employed by imprisoned artists that combat the dehumanization of prison and create paths toward meaning and purpose. They will reflect on ways to be in solidarity with those who are incarcerated.

Janie Paul is a painter, curator, writer, and an Arthur F. Thurnau professor emerita of the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. For 27 years, she has traveled throughout Michigan to meet artists and select work for the project she co-founded: *The Annual Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prisons*, an initiative of the Prison Creative Arts Project at U-M.

In *Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance*, Janie Paul introduces readers to the culture and aesthetics of prison art communities featuring over 200 images of extraordinary work. These powerful stories and images upend the manufactured stereotypes of those living in prison, imparting a real human dimension—a critical step in the movement to end mass incarceration.

This afternoon’s program is presented by UMMA in partnership with Janie Paul, the Prison Creative Arts Project, and the Stamps School of Art and Design on the occasion of the U-M LSA Theme Semester Arts & Resistance.

The Arts & Resistance Theme Semester, organized by UMMA and the U-M Arts Initiative, is generously supported by the U-M Office of the Provost, the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch, and Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick.

Rethinking Disability and the Divine Image: Resisting Ableism, Queering Kinship (October 24, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/113451 113451-21831027@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 24, 2023 4:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Judaic Studies

The assertion that humanity is made in the image of God has long been a linchpin of Jewish ethical thought, grounding contemporary commitments to human rights, racial justice, gender equity, disability affirmation, and more. But "divine image" traditions rest on a troubling intellectual history, one that traffics in human exceptionalism, anthropocentrism, and intense ableism. This talk critically examines that complex history and imagines richer alternatives, showing how queer, feminist, and ecologically-informed disability wisdom can catalyze a radical recognition of the sacred among human, animal, and earthy kin.

About Julia:

Julia Watts Belser (she/her) is professor of Jewish Studies at Georgetown University and core faculty in Georgetown’s Disability Studies program, as well as a rabbi and longtime activist for disability and gender justice. Her research centers on gender, sexuality, and disability in rabbinic literature; she also brings classical Jewish texts into conversation with disability studies, feminist and queer theory, and environmental justice. She is the author of several scholarly books, including Rabbinic Tales of Destruction: Gender, Sex, and Disability in the Ruins of Jerusalem (Oxford University Press, 2018). Her latest book is Loving Our Own Bones: Disability Wisdom and the Spiritual Subversiveness of Knowing Ourselves Whole (Beacon Press, 2023).

When Director Kristen Lovell moved to New York City in the 1990s and began to transition, she was fired from her job. With so few options to earn money to survive, Kristen, like many transgender women of color during this era, began sex work in an area known as “The Stroll” in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan, where trans women congregated and forged a deep camaraderie to protect each other from harassment and violence.

Reuniting her sisters to tell this essential New York story from their first-hand experiences, Kristen’s intimate narration and interviews bring an astonishing array of archival material of bygone New York from the 1970s through the early 2000s to life.

Please note – Mature content, sexual imagery and sexual violence. No one under 17 admitted.
