Speaker:
Ewout W. Steyerberg, PhD
Professor of Clinical Biostatistics & Medical Decision Making, Chair, Dept of Biomedical Data Sciences
Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

Clinical prediction models aim to predict a person’s risk of an outcome (e.g. complications, mortality) given their observed characteristics (1). Risk predictions are traditionally derived from regression models. Artificial Intelligence, and specifically Machine Learning methods, are gaining interest to develop predictive algorithms. Predictions from classic models or AI algorithms need to be reliable to provide valid support for tasks such as shared decision making and whether a person should initiate a particular treatment.
The aim of this talk is to review recent developments in prediction model development and validation. Illustrations will be provided from different medical applications. Trustworthiness will be discussed in relation to the statistical aspects -such as sample size and the exceptionality of patients-, model uncertainty, and heterogeneity between contexts of practical application.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Dr. Alessandro Acquisti, Trustees Professor of Information Technology and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, and the co-director of the CMU Center for Behavioral Decision Research (CBDR), will deliver a presentation on the economics of privacy in the context of augmenting economic arguments with non-economic considerations in order to address the broad concept of privacy.

Dr. Acquisti will discuss how the economics of privacy could expand its horizons and relevance both by considering economic dimensions and research questions that have so far received limited attention, and by accounting for the broader scholarship on privacy coming from other disciplines. As a complement to the contributions of other fields, rather than a substitute for them, the economics of privacy may keep thriving and remain a useful tool for debate and policy making.

Dr. Andrea Forte, Professor of Information and Dean of the University of Michigan School of Information, will deliver opening remarks.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Associate Professor of Information, School of Information, and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate a panel discussion including Dr. Nazanin Andalibi, U-M Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Digital Studies Institute, College of LSA and Dr. Kirsten Martin, William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of Technology Ethics and is Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, after the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public.

Search Engines | “What do you want me to say?” (February 8, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117468 117468-21839353@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 8, 2024 4:00pm

On February 8th, Search Engines will host Lauren Lee McCarthy for an interactive, Zoom-based presentation entitled “What do you want me to say?” McCarthy’s practice – spanning performance, software, electronics, internet, film, photography, and installation – examines social relationships in the midst of surveillance, automation, and algorithmic living.

As she writes, “I am captivated by the ways we are taught to interact with algorithms, and how this shapes the way we interact with each other. Central to my work is a critique of the simultaneous technological and social systems we’re building around ourselves. What are the rules, what happens when we introduce glitches? I invite participants. To remote control my dates. To be followed. To welcome me in as their human smart home. To attend a party hosted by artificial intelligence. In these interactions, there is a reciprocal risk taking and vulnerability, as performer and audience are both challenged to relinquish control, both implicated. We must formulate our own opinions about the systems that govern our lives. We begin to notice their effects play out on our identity, relationships, and society. Each work feels like an attempt to hack my way out of myself and into closeness with others. I am embodying machines, trying to understand that distance between the algorithm and myself, the distance between others and me. There’s humor in the breakdown, and also moments of clarity. Who builds these artificial systems, what values do they embody? Who is prioritized and who is targeted as race, gender, disability, and class are programmatically encoded? Where are the boundaries around our intimate spaces? In the midst of always on networked interfaces, what does it mean to be truly present?”

“What do you want me to say?” invites the audience to explore these questions together. The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A, moderated by Jeff Nagy.

Privacy@Michigan is hosting a free screening of the 1984 film adaptation of George Orwell’s “1984” at the Michigan Theater on March 6, 2024 starting at 5:30 pm. Admission is free and the screening is open to the general public.

Location: The Michigan Theater - 603 E Liberty St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104

ABOUT THE FILM
Based on the classic George Orwell novel, director Michael Radford’s version of 1984 was released during the book’s titular year. The Criterion Collection describes Radford’s 1984 as “The definitive film adaptation of George Orwell’s prophetic literary classic, starring John Hurt and Richard Burton. This masterly adaptation of George Orwell’s chilling parable about totalitarian oppression gives harrowing cinematic expression to the book’s prophetic dystopia. In a rubble-strewn surveillance state where an endless overseas war props up the repressive regime of the all-seeing Big Brother, and all dissent is promptly squashed, a profoundly alienated citizen, Winston Smith (thrillingly played by John Hurt), risks everything for an illicit affair with the rebellious Julia (Suzanna Hamilton), defiantly asserting his humanity in the face of soul-crushing conformity. Through vividly grim production design and expressionistically desaturated cinematography by Roger Deakins, Michael Radford’s 1984 conjures a bleak vision of postwar Britain as fascistic nightmare — a world all too recognizable as our own."

A discussion of the film, featuring U-M faculty, will accompany the screening.

DSI Book Talk | "Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating" (March 7, 2024 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115995 115995-21836051@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 7, 2024 2:30pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

In the world of online dating, race-based discrimination is not only tolerated, but encouraged as part of a pervasive belief that it is simply a neutral, personal choice about one's romantic partner. Indeed, it is so much a part of our inherited wisdom about dating and romance that it actually directs the algorithmic infrastructures of most major online dating platforms, such that they openly reproduce racist and sexist hierarchies. In Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, Apryl Williams presents a socio-technical exploration of dating platforms' algorithms, their lack of transparency, the legal and ethical discourse in these companies' community guidelines, and accounts from individual users in order to argue that sexual racism is a central feature of today's online dating culture. She discusses this reality in the context of facial recognition and sorting software as well as user experiences, drawing parallels to the long history of eugenics and banned interracial partnerships. Ultimately, Williams calls for, both a reconceptualization of the technology and policies that govern dating agencies, and also a reexamination of sociocultural beliefs about attraction, beauty, and desirability.

Apryl Williams, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Digital Studies and Communication at the University of Michigan and Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. She is the author of Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, which has been featured on Mic.com and Mozilla Explains. Her research has appeared in The New York Times, Vogue, Wired, Buzzfeed News, and Time Magazine, among others. Her work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Google, the Mozilla Foundation, the Notre Dame IBM Technology Ethics Lab, the National Center for Institutional Diversity, and the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University.

Please join us for this very special book talk, hosted by the DSI's very own Professor Apryl Williams! This will be a hybrid event, with both in-person and virtual registration options available.

The future of discovery in the age of human-AI collaboration (March 18, 2024 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/115761 115761-21835473@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 18, 2024 8:30am
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

What does an AI-driven future look like?

Overview: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every aspect of our society and revolutionizing academic research. Powerful new systems like Generative AI unlocks enormous potential to accelerate research, “mass produce” human knowledge, and enable humans to address previously unfathomable scientific questions and engineering challenges. Meanwhile, such potential is still largely speculative and initial successes are still limited in scope. Massive adoption of AI in science and engineering will be possible only after addressing numerous issues, and building infrastructure and capacity.

In this symposium, we bring together leading thinkers and researchers around the country to share their vision and work, in four themes.

1) Speeding Up Research – using AI to automate and accelerate research, such as experimental design optimization and accelerating the workflow.

2) The Nature of Creativity in Research – the role of the AI Researcher and the new role of the Human Researcher.

3) Trusting the AI Researcher – Upholding research rigor in AI-driven research and ensuring the validation of AI-driven discoveries, and aligning AI-driven discoveries with human values.

4) Expanding the Limit of the Human Researcher– using AI to ask previously unfathomable questions in a number of research fields.

The intended audience are researchers, trainees and the general public to this event regardless of the specific fields of their research and the focus of their intellectual pursuit.
