The way to begin that writing project is to write. Using prompts in workshop, you will have the opportunity to write the stories you've always wanted to share. There won't be any critiques, so you can turn off your text editor and enjoy the writing process. Free Writing is about exploring ideas and memories. It's about first drafts not finished products. What stories would you like to tell?
Instructor Diane Nash will lead this study group. This study group will meet Wednesdays beginning January 26 through February 23.

Are you interested in birds, or perhaps endangered species? Join us on Wednesday, January 26 to learn about the Michigan Notable Book “The Kirtland's Warbler: The Story of a Bird's Fight Against Extinction and the People Who Saved It” by William Rapai. This book looks at the history of this unique bird, examines the people and policies that kept the warbler from extinction, explores the cult of personality that surrounds it, and examines the challenges of the future—all through the eyes of the people who have acted so passionately on its behalf. There will be a Q&A for attendees.

This event will take place in Facebook Live and Zoom webinar. You can register for Zoom at https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/9116412438935/WN_82XVKmSeSm-DoZiIWPwmhw
A recording will be posted on Facebook and YouTube.

About the Author:
William Rapai is an amateur naturalist who is also the author of "Lake Invaders" and "Brewed in Michigan." He was previously an award-winning reporter and editor for the Grand Forks Herald, the Detroit Free Press, and the Boston Globe.

"The Kirtland's Warbler" is on sale for $12 and free shipping during the month of January. Visit https://www.press.umich.edu/6875019/kirtlands_warbler and use the discount code "UMGL12WARBLE" when you check out.

Presenter: April Conway, Sweetland Center for Writing

To help demystify the graduate student and candidacy process, this presentation explores how PhD milestone genres can build off each other. Students will learn strategies to leverage the connections across these genres with the goal of earning their doctorate in a timely manner.

Please have access to your program's degree requirements. The more detailed the better: if there is an official program checklist for these requirements, please bring that, but if there are also unwritten expectations, like conference presentations, funding, or publications, that knowledge will also be useful.

Registration: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dd9IrKz5QeB08g6

Rackham / Sweetland Workshops, co-sponsored by the Rackham Graduate School and held in the Fall and Winter terms, cover a host of topics designed to help graduate students in various aspects of writing.

This in-person writing retreat on March 7-8, 2022 is especially for those who need protected time and space away from campus and other responsibilities to dedicate to academic writing. Pierce Cedar Creek Institute offers private guest rooms and spacious indoor writing spaces with natural scenery for inspiration to write about community-engaged research, community partnerships, broader impacts work, service-learning, and other writing that supports engagement with partners beyond campus borders.

This two-day, residential retreat includes both unstructured writing time and optional structured writing support, including workshops, consultations, and peer feedback. Consultants from The Writing Center and University Outreach and Engagement will be available to provide feedback both days and will build connections among the writers throughout the retreat, so that even while writing on your own, you are part of a supportive community.

Presenter: Jimmy Brancho, Sweetland Center for Writing

Literature reviews keep science going. Why, and how? In this workshop, we'll talk over the basics of what makes a review a review, and then delve into the factors that make for a great one. We'll talk not just about composition, but about reading, planning, and motivational strategies that can help you get started and keep going. You'll have a chance to think over your own review (whether it is a standalone review or part of your study introduction) in a small group and immediately apply the presentation to your work.

Rackham / Sweetland Workshops, co-sponsored by the Rackham Graduate School and held in the Fall and Winter terms, cover a host of topics designed to help graduate students in various aspects of writing.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Regretfully, the talk between Toshi Reagon and Alexis Pauline Gumbs has been canceled. Please join us for other Octavia Butler Week and Parable Path events this week.

See all Octavia Butler Week events at https://myumi.ch/n8VAR.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs in conversation with Toshi Reagon is the 2022 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture. Can't attend in person? Watch the live-stream at https://myumi.ch/y9VNR.

Writer Alexis Pauline Gumbs talks to musician, composer, producer, and activist Toshi Reagon about her opera Parable of the Sower, based on the book by Octavia Butler. Moderated by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas.

About Octavia Butler Week:
Octavia Butler was a renowned African American author who received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work. With Octavia Butler Week, we aim to explore the work and legacy of this visionary writer. It’s part of a larger series of events that include a community read, a multimedia performance, an open-mic night, and additional events that together comprise Parable Path A2Ypsi.

Culminating Parable Path A2Ypsi is Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s genre-defying musical adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower. UMS will present this powerful performance March 25-27, 2022 at the Power Center in Ann Arbor. Tickets and info at ums.org.

About Toshi Reagon:
Toshi Reagon has been described as “a talented, versatile singer, songwriter and musician with a profound ear for sonic Americana—from folk to funk, from blues to rock” by critic/blogger Eva Yaa Asantewaa (InfiniteBody). “She masters each of these genres with vocal strategies that easily spiral and swoop from the expressively sinuous to the hard-charging, a combination of warmth and mischief.”

While her expansive career has landed her comfortably in residence at Carnegie Hall, the Paris Opera House and Madison Square Garden, you can just as easily find Toshi turning out a music festival, intimate venue or local club. Toshi finds home on any musical stage. Toshi has had the pleasure of working with Lenny Kravitz, Lizz Wright, Ani DiFranco, Carl Hancock Rux, Nona Hendryx, Pete Seeger, Chocolate Genius and many other amazing artists, including her favorite collaborator, her mom, Bernice Johnson Reagon.

Yaa Asantewaa writes, “Toshi knows the power of song to focus, unite and mobilize people. If you’ve been lucky enough to be in Toshi’s presence, you know you can’t walk away from her without feeling better about yourself as a human being. She aims for nothing less.”

LSI SciComm Speaker Series: Matt Richtel (April 11, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/92899 92899-21697950@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 11, 2022 10:00am
Location: Palmer Commons
Organized By: Life Sciences Institute (LSI)

* The LSI's SciComm Speaker Series highlights the importance of disseminating scientific findings beyond the walls of the academy and effectively communicating the impact of publicly-funded research. This annual event provides world-leading science writers and communicators with an opportunity to share their experiences with faculty, staff and students, while also tapping into U-M's vast scientific research community. This year's speaker is best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Matt Richtel.*

In 2019, Richtel's book about the immune system, An Elegant Defense, hit shelves. Richtel steeped the book in deep science, but covered all that deep science in frosting: story, anecdote and humor. When the book came out, the New York Times published an excerpt. What chapter did they choose? The one that asked: Should you pick your nose? Richtel had asked the question as a way of exploring whether our urge to probe our noses is actually a way for evolution to sneak some outside information to our immune systems. While we may not have a definitive answer to that question, after more than two decades at the New York Times and as author of several best-of-the-year science books, Richtel does know the answer to this: How do you make science information palatable? What does it take to educate the public?

There are two answers: One is story. The second is existential crisis. When Covid hit, the public started paying attention to science as never before. But this talk about the former—how to turn science into a story that people are eager to consume and that they will remember.

Over the course of this conversation, Richtel will offer specific examples of how he has married complicated science with compelling stories without sacrificing the sanctity and complexity of the research and scholarship. He will also tackle a number of specific, key issues around the marriage of science and storytelling: ethics, the role of the scientist/scholar, the relationship between scientist and journalist and how to improve it; the responsibility of media to understand how to read science, and accurately calibrate its weight. Plus, all the questions you want to ask!

*Coffee and light refreshments will be offered beginning at 9:30. Richtel will be available to sign books and bookplates immediately following the event.*

About the Speaker:
Matt Richtel is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times, lauded speaker and bestselling author. He writes about technology, its impact on society, and how it changes the way we work, play and relate to each other. In 2010 he won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his series of articles on the hazardous use of cell phones, computers and other devices while driving. Richtel lives in San Francisco with his wife and their two children. He is an avid tennis player, a recreational athlete, a prideful maker of guacamole for parties and a periodic (and not good) songwriter. He grew up in Boulder, Colorado, the son of two avid readers, attended Boulder High School, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric from University of California at Berkeley and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Long time Ann Arbor writer and American Culture's Lecturer Frances Kai-Hwa Wang reads from her new book, You Cannot Resist Me When My Hair Is in Braids.
With many stories set on the streets and in the cafes of Ann Arbor, this is a mischievous and fierce collection of lyric essays and prose poems deftly navigating the space between cultures, punctuated by wise children, bossy aunties, unreliable suitors, and an uncertain political landscape that is Asian America. With artwork and stories behind the stories, we will discuss the challenges of writing in these political and pandemic times.

UMMA’s exhibition Watershed features fifteen artists whose work invites us to reflect on issues central to the Great Lakes region and its future. Join us on Saturday, July 16 to hear from Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine and experience The Gift, her 40-foot mural newly installed in the gallery. Bonnie Devine's artistic practice, which spans installation, painting, and writing, is rooted in a commitment to the storytelling and pictorial traditions that are core to Anishinaabe culture. For Watershed, she painted the mural directly in the gallery. In this special UMMA commission, Devine draws attention to the removal of Anishinaabe people from the Great Lakes region, as well as their erasure from historical narratives.    This program is the first public opportunity to see the completed mural. Devine will be joined in conversation by exhibition curator Jennifer Friess.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.

Research Development and Proposal Services (RDPS) will host a webinar on applying for major instrumentation grants. We will cover both the NIH S10 and NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) funding mechanisms. Presenters Jill Jividen, PhD, and Rachel Wallace, PhD, will cover application requirements, best practices, common pitfalls, suggested timelines, and more, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

Critical Conversations is a monthly lunchtime series organized by the English Department Associate Chair’s Office. Each Critical Conversations session will feature four to five panelists who will give flash talks about their current work as related to a broad theme.

We see these sessions as an important hub for rigorous and collaborative thinking, giving our Michigan community the chance to share and learn about each other's work on a monthly basis. Now more than ever, our community is in need of the encouragement and inspiration we find in one another’s work, and we see Critical Conversations as a crucial opportunity to connect with colleagues and ideas in our disconnected circumstances. We hope you will join us in Fall 2022!

For the first time, Critical Conversations is hosting a Prospectus Showcase to celebrate the research journeys and commitments of graduate students in the English department who are at that stage.

In this hands-on workshop, we will focus on a very important element in most academic job applications: the teaching statement. We will consider the criteria that review committees use in evaluating these statements, and we will assess examples of successful submissions in order to consider what makes for effective content, structure, and language. The workshop will include time for writing and revising an initial draft.

Writing in graduate school calls on students to work in a variety of new genres and challenges writers to expand on their skills as communicators. This workshop will help early graduate student writers identify critical practices and strategies to enhance their writing and build an effective approach to graduate writing. We’ll talk about becoming more strategic readers and examine patterns of inquiry across disciplines moving from the practice of asking good questions to the importance of topic construction. We will also talk about the variety of communication forms graduate writing can take. The workshop will conclude by examining our writing routines and finding ways to expand our own writing process to succeed in graduate school.

Many dream of being their own boss, but Jillian Lukas Rodriguez (Sociology & Creative Writing, ‘12) brought this dream to fruition when she became a freelance copywriter shortly after graduating. Jillian describes herself as “a lifelong lover of words.” Jillian’s day job is a senior copywriter at a learning innovation company, a position she landed after spending her twenties building her own freelance copywriting business, where she served as a brand voice for many different companies. She’s since gone on to full-time work with two of her former clients, the first of which was a mission-driven entrepreneurial group. Coming to U-M as a first-generation college student, Jillian used her sociology and creative writing degrees to fuse her passion for people together with her love of words to craft a unique career path she hadn’t thought possible. In a world where freelancing, the gig economy, and side hustles are becoming increasingly attractive, Jillian returns to LSA to share the ups and downs of the freelance world, how to harness your freelancing experiencing towards securing full-time roles, and the skillset an LSA degree can provide should you pursue the independent freelance route.

About Jillian:

Jillian Lukas Rodriguez thrives at the intersection of content and community. A lifelong lover of words, Jillian is a 2012 graduate of the University of Michigan LSA and the Residential College, studying Sociology and RC Creative Writing. She graduated with highest honors and earned an RC “Robbies” award for high achievement in creative arts.

Jillian is passionate about the power of words and stories to build connections, solve problems, and inspire positive change. She has dedicated her professional career to doing just that, first as a freelance writer where she built a one-person copywriting house to support a range of organizations in their marketing, branding, and business efforts and helping to bring their brand stories to life. Since then, she’s gone full-time and served as a Social Content Lead for FleishmanHillard’s Chevrolet small and electric cars accounts, as well as serving as Chief Storyteller for the mission-driven entrepreneurial group the Small Giants Community. Jillian’s copywriting has made its way to national outlets such as Forbes.com and ThriveGlobal. Today, she’s Senior Copywriter for Maestro, a learning innovation company that inspires change in learners at Fortune 500 companies such as Royal Caribbean Cruises and Target.

You should attend this session if you are:
- A U-M undergraduate LSA student
- A first-generation college student
- Interested in freelance work after graduation
- Interested in pursuing a career in writing or copyediting after graduation

What you’ll gain by attending:

Alum Connection with Harlene Ellin: How an LSA Degree unlocked endless career possibilities (November 4, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100138 100138-21799256@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 4, 2022 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Harlene Ellin identified her enthusiasm for communications early in her career and by activating her network of connections, she quickly found opportunities, both full-time and gigs, in a number of industries including freelance writing for the Chicago Tribune and Times, working as an interior designer, and leading communications strategy for the Women’s March Chicago and CARPLS Legal Aide. In each industry, Harlene used the skills she learned as an LSA student to align her career with causes she cared about and move the needle on issues of importance to her. From journalism to nonprofits to legal, Harlene highlights the flexibility that an LSA degree can offer, and is now coming back to campus to share her hard-earned wisdom and life lessons with current LSA students.

About Harlene:

After graduating with B.A. in English and Political Science from U-M, Harlene pursued a law degree as planned. She quickly learned that life doesn’t follow a linear path, but often includes unexpected twists and turns. After dropping out of law school, Harlene’s shifted her focus, or what she calls career “corkscrews”, to earn a M.A. from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and working as an award-winning news and feature writer for a variety of major news outlets. She also has held various communications-related positions — from public relations assistant to communications director — in both the private and non-profit sectors.

A lifelong lover of art, architecture and design, Harlene returned to school yet again. This time she earned a degree in interior design from Harrington School of Design, while raising her three children. She went on to work for several years as a residential interior designer in the Chicago area. Most recently, Harlene has been highly engaged in political activism, using her varied skill set to advance progressive causes such as abortion access, women’s rights and gun reform.

You should attend this session if you are:
- A U-M undergraduate LSA student
- Interested in journalism, writing, communications, nonprofit work, or interior design
- Exploring multiple career aspirations and interests

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Make a connection with a successful LSA alum ready to support you
- Get ideas for how to build a career when your path is not traditional
- Learn how to build your networking skills

Throughout this event series, our panelists and special guests aim to answer the following questions: Why does creative writing matter so deeply to so many people today? Who are the authors who have made and are making a lasting impression on the literary world? What do we stand to learn from these writers? Join University of Michigan Press series editors Jay Parini (Writers on Writing), Derek Pollard (Poets on Poetry), and Georgia Popoff (Under Discussion) as they talk with authors about why these series continue to be such catalysts in the classroom and writing workshops, in community and literary centers, among critics and scholars, and on bookshelves of writers everywhere.

In this kickoff event, Jay Parini, Derek Pollard, and Georgia Popoff wax poetic on why the books in these series have sparked some of the most engaged and engaging conversations about creative writing people have had for the past 25 years, as well as on how they’re working to build an even broader platform for writers to say what truly needs to be said. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Eco Soma: Pain and Joy in Speculative Performance Encounters by Petra Kuppers (November 16, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99598 99598-21798378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 16, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

In Eco Soma, Petra Kuppers asks readers to be alert to their own embodied responses to art practice and to pay attention to themselves as active participants in a shared sociocultural world. Reading contemporary performance encounters and artful engagements, this book models a disability culture sensitivity to living in a shared world, oriented toward more socially just futures.

Eco soma methods mix and merge realities on the edges of lived experience and site-specific performance. Kuppers invites us to become moths, sprout gills, listen to our heart’s drum, and take starships into crip time. And fantasy is central to these engagements: feeling/sensing monsters, catastrophes, golden lines, heartbeats, injured sharks, dotted salamanders, kissing mammoths, and more. Kuppers illuminates ecopoetic disability culture perspectives, contending that disabled people and their co-conspirators make art to live in a changing world, in contact with feminist, queer, trans, racialized, and Indigenous art projects. By offering new ways to think, frame, and feel “environments,” Kuppers focuses on art-based methods of envisioning change and argues that disability can offer imaginative ways toward living well and with agency in change, unrest, and challenge.

Traditional somatics teach us how to fine-tune our introspective senses and to open up the world of our own bodies, while eco soma methods extend that attention toward the creative possibilities of the reach between self, others, and the land. Eco Soma proposes an art/life method of sensory tuning to the inside and the outside simultaneously, a method that allows for a wider opening toward ethical cohabitation with human and more-than-human others.

This book is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem)—a collaboration of the Association of American Universities, the Association of University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries—and the generous support of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the Provost Office. Each year over Spring term, NELP sends forty students and thirteen instructors to live and study in the woods of New England. The program is rigorous and exhilarating-we read and write a lot; we meet for classes every day; we do chores like cooking and cleaning together every day; we give up our phones and computers; we climb mountains. Our students receive (9) English credits and meet LSA's Upper-Level Writing Requirement. Folks from a broad range of majors and schools attend NELP each year. You could be one of them!

Join us for this informational meeting to hear how former NELP students describe the program themselves.
