UMMA’s exhibition Watershed features fifteen artists whose work invites us to reflect on issues central to the Great Lakes region and its future. Join us on Saturday, July 16 to hear from Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine and experience The Gift, her 40-foot mural newly installed in the gallery. Bonnie Devine's artistic practice, which spans installation, painting, and writing, is rooted in a commitment to the storytelling and pictorial traditions that are core to Anishinaabe culture. For Watershed, she painted the mural directly in the gallery. In this special UMMA commission, Devine draws attention to the removal of Anishinaabe people from the Great Lakes region, as well as their erasure from historical narratives.    This program is the first public opportunity to see the completed mural. Devine will be joined in conversation by exhibition curator Jennifer Friess.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.

Research Development and Proposal Services (RDPS) will host a webinar on applying for major instrumentation grants. We will cover both the NIH S10 and NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) funding mechanisms. Presenters Jill Jividen, PhD, and Rachel Wallace, PhD, will cover application requirements, best practices, common pitfalls, suggested timelines, and more, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Location: Angell Hall
Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

Critical Conversations is a monthly lunchtime series organized by the English Department Associate Chair’s Office. Each Critical Conversations session will feature four to five panelists who will give flash talks about their current work as related to a broad theme.

We see these sessions as an important hub for rigorous and collaborative thinking, giving our Michigan community the chance to share and learn about each other's work on a monthly basis. Now more than ever, our community is in need of the encouragement and inspiration we find in one another’s work, and we see Critical Conversations as a crucial opportunity to connect with colleagues and ideas in our disconnected circumstances. We hope you will join us in Fall 2022!

For the first time, Critical Conversations is hosting a Prospectus Showcase to celebrate the research journeys and commitments of graduate students in the English department who are at that stage.

We will consider the criteria that review committees use in evaluating these statements, and we will assess examples of successful submissions in order to consider what makes for effective content, structure, and language. The workshop will include time for writing and revising an initial draft.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Sweetland Center for Writing

Writing in graduate school calls on students to work in a variety of new genres and challenges writers to expand on their skills as communicators. This workshop will help early graduate student writers identify critical practices and strategies to enhance their writing and build an effective approach to graduate writing. We’ll talk about becoming more strategic readers and examine patterns of inquiry across disciplines moving from the practice of asking good questions to the importance of topic construction. We will also talk about the variety of communication forms graduate writing can take. The workshop will conclude by examining our writing routines and finding ways to expand our own writing process to succeed in graduate school.

Many dream of being their own boss, but Jillian Lukas Rodriguez (Sociology & Creative Writing, ‘12) brought this dream to fruition when she became a freelance copywriter shortly after graduating. Jillian describes herself as “a lifelong lover of words.” Jillian’s day job is a senior copywriter at a learning innovation company, a position she landed after spending her twenties building her own freelance copywriting business, where she served as a brand voice for many different companies. She’s since gone on to full-time work with two of her former clients, the first of which was a mission-driven entrepreneurial group. Coming to U-M as a first-generation college student, Jillian used her sociology and creative writing degrees to fuse her passion for people together with her love of words to craft a unique career path she hadn’t thought possible. In a world where freelancing, the gig economy, and side hustles are becoming increasingly attractive, Jillian returns to LSA to share the ups and downs of the freelance world, how to harness your freelancing experiencing towards securing full-time roles, and the skillset an LSA degree can provide should you pursue the independent freelance route.

About Jillian:

Jillian Lukas Rodriguez thrives at the intersection of content and community. A lifelong lover of words, Jillian is a 2012 graduate of the University of Michigan LSA and the Residential College, studying Sociology and RC Creative Writing. She graduated with highest honors and earned an RC “Robbies” award for high achievement in creative arts.

Jillian is passionate about the power of words and stories to build connections, solve problems, and inspire positive change. She has dedicated her professional career to doing just that, first as a freelance writer where she built a one-person copywriting house to support a range of organizations in their marketing, branding, and business efforts and helping to bring their brand stories to life. Since then, she’s gone full-time and served as a Social Content Lead for FleishmanHillard’s Chevrolet small and electric cars accounts, as well as serving as Chief Storyteller for the mission-driven entrepreneurial group the Small Giants Community. Jillian’s copywriting has made its way to national outlets such as Forbes.com and ThriveGlobal. Today, she’s Senior Copywriter for Maestro, a learning innovation company that inspires change in learners at Fortune 500 companies such as Royal Caribbean Cruises and Target.

You should attend this session if you are:
- A U-M undergraduate LSA student
- A first-generation college student
- Interested in freelance work after graduation
- Interested in pursuing a career in writing or copyediting after graduation

What you’ll gain by attending:

Alum Connection with Harlene Ellin: How an LSA Degree unlocked endless career possibilities (November 4, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100138 100138-21799256@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 4, 2022 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Harlene Ellin identified her enthusiasm for communications early in her career and by activating her network of connections, she quickly found opportunities, both full-time and gigs, in a number of industries including freelance writing for the Chicago Tribune and Times, working as an interior designer, and leading communications strategy for the Women’s March Chicago and CARPLS Legal Aide. In each industry, Harlene used the skills she learned as an LSA student to align her career with causes she cared about and move the needle on issues of importance to her. From journalism to nonprofits to legal, Harlene highlights the flexibility that an LSA degree can offer, and is now coming back to campus to share her hard-earned wisdom and life lessons with current LSA students.

About Harlene:

After graduating with B.A. in English and Political Science from U-M, Harlene pursued a law degree as planned. She quickly learned that life doesn’t follow a linear path, but often includes unexpected twists and turns. After dropping out of law school, Harlene’s shifted her focus, or what she calls career “corkscrews”, to earn a M.A. from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and working as an award-winning news and feature writer for a variety of major news outlets. She also has held various communications-related positions — from public relations assistant to communications director — in both the private and non-profit sectors.

A lifelong lover of art, architecture and design, Harlene returned to school yet again. This time she earned a degree in interior design from Harrington School of Design, while raising her three children. She went on to work for several years as a residential interior designer in the Chicago area. Most recently, Harlene has been highly engaged in political activism, using her varied skill set to advance progressive causes such as abortion access, women’s rights and gun reform.

You should attend this session if you are:
- A U-M undergraduate LSA student
- Interested in journalism, writing, communications, nonprofit work, or interior design
- Exploring multiple career aspirations and interests

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Make a connection with a successful LSA alum ready to support you
- Get ideas for how to build a career when your path is not traditional
- Learn how to build your networking skills

Throughout this event series, our panelists and special guests aim to answer the following questions: Why does creative writing matter so deeply to so many people today? Who are the authors who have made and are making a lasting impression on the literary world? What do we stand to learn from these writers? Join University of Michigan Press series editors Jay Parini (Writers on Writing), Derek Pollard (Poets on Poetry), and Georgia Popoff (Under Discussion) as they talk with authors about why these series continue to be such catalysts in the classroom and writing workshops, in community and literary centers, among critics and scholars, and on bookshelves of writers everywhere.

In this kickoff event, Jay Parini, Derek Pollard, and Georgia Popoff wax poetic on why the books in these series have sparked some of the most engaged and engaging conversations about creative writing people have had for the past 25 years, as well as on how they’re working to build an even broader platform for writers to say what truly needs to be said. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Eco Soma: Pain and Joy in Speculative Performance Encounters by Petra Kuppers (November 16, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99598 99598-21798378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 16, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

In Eco Soma, Petra Kuppers asks readers to be alert to their own embodied responses to art practice and to pay attention to themselves as active participants in a shared sociocultural world. Reading contemporary performance encounters and artful engagements, this book models a disability culture sensitivity to living in a shared world, oriented toward more socially just futures.

Eco soma methods mix and merge realities on the edges of lived experience and site-specific performance. Kuppers invites us to become moths, sprout gills, listen to our heart’s drum, and take starships into crip time. And fantasy is central to these engagements: feeling/sensing monsters, catastrophes, golden lines, heartbeats, injured sharks, dotted salamanders, kissing mammoths, and more. Kuppers illuminates ecopoetic disability culture perspectives, contending that disabled people and their co-conspirators make art to live in a changing world, in contact with feminist, queer, trans, racialized, and Indigenous art projects. By offering new ways to think, frame, and feel “environments,” Kuppers focuses on art-based methods of envisioning change and argues that disability can offer imaginative ways toward living well and with agency in change, unrest, and challenge.

Traditional somatics teach us how to fine-tune our introspective senses and to open up the world of our own bodies, while eco soma methods extend that attention toward the creative possibilities of the reach between self, others, and the land. Eco Soma proposes an art/life method of sensory tuning to the inside and the outside simultaneously, a method that allows for a wider opening toward ethical cohabitation with human and more-than-human others.

This book is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem)—a collaboration of the Association of American Universities, the Association of University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries—and the generous support of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the Provost Office. Our students receive (9) English credits and meet LSA's Upper-Level Writing Requirement. Folks from a broad range of majors and schools attend NELP each year. You could be one of them!

Earlier this year, UMMA received a transformative gift of more than 70 works of important and influential Chinese calligraphy. The Lo Chia-Lun Calligraphy Collection adds an impressive breadth of works to an already stellar collection of Chinese paintings and ceramics at UMMA. To mark the occasion, UMMA and the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies are delighted to present this important lecture with Chinese Art Historian, Dr. Amy McNair. McNair will discuss works in the collection by the famous Yuan-dynasty poet, Yang Weizhen (1296-1370), and highlight the importance of the Lo Chia-Lun Collection in the future studies of Chinese calligraphy. These works are colophons (a publisher's emblem or imprint) to one or two lost paintings, called The Fording Tiger, and are superb examples of his intentionally eccentric, awkward style of writing. The “fording tiger” image comes from the story of the Han-dynasty official Liu Kun (d. 57 CE), whose reputation for good government was so powerful that when he arrived to govern Hongnong (modern Sanmenxia, Henan), the local man-eating tigers swam across the Yellow River rather than face him. Yang was instrumental in establishing the importance of colophons on paintings and reviving the practice of yuefu poetry in the 14th century, making these two colophons containing yuefu poems highly significant works.

Prior to the keynote, we are delighted to offer a rare opportunity to see works from the Lo Chia-Lun collection in UMMA’s object study rooms. You must register for a study room session. Please register for only one time slot. Capacity is extremely limited.

Both study sessions are currently full. You can register for the waitlist below.

More about Dr. Amy McNair Amy McNair is a Professor of Chinese Art History at the University of Kansas and Editor-in-chief of the Asian art history journal Artibus Asiae. Her research interests are Chinese calligraphy and painting, and Chinese Buddhist sculpture. Her 1998 book on the Tang-dynasty calligrapher Yan Zhenqing was recently translated into Chinese as 中正之笔——颜真卿书法与宋代文人政治 (The Righteous Pen—Yan Zhenqing's Calligraphy and the Song Dynasty Literati Politics). Her latest book, The Stigma of the Painting Master: Liang Shicheng and The Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings, will appear in 2023, published by Harvard Asia Center Publications.

Please join us after Dr. McNair’s talk for refreshments in the UMMA Apse.

This workshop is made possible by the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, the Department of History of Art, and the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Endowment for Chinese Art. The Lo Chia-Lun Calligraphy Collection at UMMA is the gift of Jiu-Fong Lo Chang and Kuei-sheng Chang.

Turn inspiration into impact with insights from researchers, scientists, artists, and activists tackling the question: What can we do about single-use plastics? The U-M Museum of Art, U-M Arts Initiative, the Graham Sustainability Institute, and the University Musical Society join forces to offer this illuminating event designed to share diverse perspectives and empower individual action.

Moderated by Jena Brooker, Detroit-based freelance journalist, an environmental reporter for BridgeDetroit, Data Fellow at the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism, and Science-Health-Environment Reporting Fellow through the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ), and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ).

Panelists include:

Lashaun Jackson, Graham Sustainability Scholar

Samuel McMullen, Co-Founder, Live Zero Waste

Shelie Miller, Professor, Director, Program in the Environment; Jonathan W. Bulkley Collegiate Professor of Sustainable Systems; U-M Distinguished Faculty Fellow in Sustainability, SEAS

Meredith Miller, Associate Professor of Architecture, Taubman College

Thomas Moran, Associate Professor of Architecture, Taubman College; collaborator, Thing Thing

Genevieve Rattray, Director of Environmental Initiatives and Affairs for the Belle Isle Conservancy and Founder & Chair of the Detroit River Coalition

Hannah Tizedes, Artist and Environmentalist

Single-use plastics, such as plastic bags, straws, and cutlery, have become a major environmental concern due to their widespread use and presence as a global polluter. These plastics can take hundreds of years to break down, and, in the process, release harmful chemicals into the environment.

During the event, the diverse panel of experts will explore various ways to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics, such as using reusable alternatives, implementing policies to reduce plastic production and consumption, and promoting recycling and proper waste management. The speakers will also discuss the role that individuals, businesses, and governments can play in addressing this issue.

by Robin Frohardt is a custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience that uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.

Shelves are stocked with thousands of original items meticulously sculpted by hand — produce and meat, dry goods and toiletries, cakes and sushi rolls — all made from discarded single-use plastics collected from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day, the store transforms into an immersive, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry, shadow play, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

The Plastic Bag Store is co-presented by the University Musical Society, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the U-M Graham Sustainability Institute, with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.

More about the film:
MTV Documentary Films Presents *Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison* (formerly known as A Peculiar Silence) tells the story of playwright Liza Jessie Peterson, whose acclaimed play *The Peculiar Patriot* was shut down mid-performance at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison.

Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, produced by Catherine Gund, featuring Liza Jessie Peterson and Norris Henderson (Peterson and Henderson are also Executive Producers), the film examines how one woman's play challenged the country's largest plantation prison and impacted the incarcerated men long after the record of her visit was erased by the institution's administration.

More about the play:
LaQuanda ‘Betsy’ Ross knows a lot about the New York State Penitentiary system. Her regular visits to loved ones in various upstate institutions have made her quite the expert and a self-proclaimed “Peculiar Patriot." In-between neighborhood updates and gossip, Betsy educates herself and the audience on the systemic inequity within America’s prison complex system and its effect on those behind bars, as well as their family and friends.

Written and performed by the incomparable Liza Jessie Peterson, The Peculiar Patriot was inspired by her comprehensive and extensive work in prisons, including on Riker’s Island. Peterson’s tour de force solo piece is an important, funny, and profound investigative look into America’s criminal justice system.

Instructors across the country have been grappling with the implications of this technology for their teaching, especially their use of writing assignments. This session will begin with a brief overview of ChatGPT, its functionality and limitations, as well as ways to discourage its use for plagiarism and initial thoughts about how it might be used productively for writing assignments. Participants will then have the option of choosing one of three facilitated roundtable discussions: 1) hands-on exploration of ChatGPT functionality, 2) creating assignment prompts less susceptible to use of ChatGPT, 3) brainstorming ways to leverage ChatGPT in courses. To make the most of this session, participants are encouraged to bring a sample assignment prompt to focus their discussion and reflection.

In this virtual panel and discussion, Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez (Michigan State University) and Ryan James Kernan (Rutgers University) will share their groundbreaking research on the literary and cultural translation of Blackness before engaging in a discussion moderated by Aaron Coleman, U-M’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Critical Translation Studies.
Dr. Figueroa-Vásquez’s and Dr. Kernan’s transnational and Afrodiasporic scholarship transforms our understanding of Blackness at regional, national, and international scales. Their reframing of Afrolatinx and Black USAmerican literature and culture shines new light on the international and Afrodiasporic dimensions of poets like the U.S. Midwest’s Langston Hughes while envisioning new modes of Afrodiasporic community through digital and archival innovation.

The conversation will center on the series’ guiding principle that to be a good writer you need to be a good reader as well. The Writers on Writing series brings together the work of some of our finest writers on the subject they know best, discussing their own work and that of others, as well as concentrating on craft and other aspects of the writer's world.

Attendees are welcome to submit questions for a short question and answer period. The event recording will be posted to YouTube.

In addition, during the month of February, you can also take 40% off all books in the Writers on Writing Series by using the discount code “UMWOW” at checkout on our website: https://www.press.umich.edu/browse/series/UMWOW

About the Speakers:

Jay Parini, series editor of Writers on Writing, is also a poet, novelist, biographer, critic, and longtime professor at Middlebury College. He has published over thirty books.

Robert Cohen is the author of Inspired Sleep, Amateur Barbarians, and The Varieties of Romantic Experience, among other works of fiction. If you are interested in learning more about the Sweetland Minor in Writing from current students and faculty, or have questions about the application process, you can attend a Minor in Writing Virtual Information Session hosted on Zoom.

The deadline to apply for the Fall 2023 cohort is Monday, March 20th at noon.

Chapter Abstract:
In this essay, I read John Addington Symonds' Memoirs and personal correspondences as textual repositories of queer anxiety. I focus on Symonds' recollections about living in fear of being discovered and publicly humiliated, and I argue that queer anxiety is a structure of feeling constitutive of the homosexual closet. Examining his correspondence with Havelock Ellis and Richard von Krafft-Ebing, I reveal that Symonds theorized his affective life and developed a notion of the cultural origins of queer anxiety. With this, he sought to challenge the psychiatric definitions of homosexual neurosis as a congenital condition and dispute the scientific theories of homosexuality as illness. His autotheoretical contributions, however, were dismissed by sexologists as subjective inferences inadmissible to scientific epistemologies: as the object of the medical gaze, the anxious homosexual could speak, but he could never have the last word.

How do I turn this never-ending tangle of literature into a neat, polished review? In this interactive workshop, we'll cover laying the foundation for your scholarly literature review and then taking that first critical step towards composition. We'll crowdsource tips for generating a source list, organizing it as you go, and starting to extract themes and ideas for section headings from your reading library. We'll also cover the basics of structure to reduce the barrier for writing your first sections. Whether you're halfway through or just starting out, you'll have a chance to take the next step on organizing, defining your purpose, or revising your argumentation. This presentation will focus on reviews in the sciences, but concepts are generalizable to all literature reviews.

Presenter: Jimmy Brancho, Sweetland Center for Writing

Hear, Here: Humanities Up Close (April 4, 2023 12:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98546 98546-21796902@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 4, 2023 12:30pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

With the “Hear, Here” series, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session. Today: “The Problem of the Refugee Writer” with Hadji Bakara.

About the talk:
In the first decades of the twentieth-century a new historical figure appeared: the refugee writer. In this talk, I tell the story of these displaced and stateless writers through the archives of an organization that tried to help them: The P.E.N Refugee Writers Fund. The story of this short-lived and experimental organization, I argue, is also the story of how writing became a human right in the wake of the catastrophes of mid-century.

About Hadji Bakara:
Hadji Bakara is a 2022-23 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and assistant professor of English language and literature.
