*This production has been re-scheduled from February*

Devised Dance/Theatre piece inspired by short stories by Haruki Murakami and many more. Directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast. “And then I realized that the deep darkness inside me had vanished. Suddenly. As suddenly as it has come. I raised myself from the sand and, without bothering either to take off my shoes or roll up my cuffs, walked into the surf to let the waves lap at my ankles.” What does it mean to tell a story? Who is the storyteller, who is listening? What real geography is surrounding us and what landscape do we imagine in our stories?

Jacob Jolliff was born into a musical family in Newberg, OR. His dad started him on the mandolin at age seven and required him to practice ten minutes a day. But after six months of practicing this minimal amount, something clicked, and almost overnight he started putting in several hours of intense practice daily. And this hasn't really changed in the last 20 years. He's played with Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band (which continues to tour), and now he's started his own Jacob Jolliff Band, featuring some of New England's most virtuosic young pickers. The group features a lot of Jacob's original instrumentals, as well as showcasing his singing, which has been a big part of what he does in recent years.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

A multi-venue exhibition of site-specific installations, performances, interventions, and events by University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students, Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is curated by Guna Nadarajan, dean of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library, Hatcher Graduate Library, and the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library.

The continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment, distribution, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for/of books and libraries.

Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, the University of Michigan Library, the University of Michigan Office for Research (UMOR), and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

After finding Mannea pottery artifacts at archaeological sites in his hometown of Rabat in the northwest of Kurdistan in Iran, Rezgar Mamandi discovered his passion for ceramic art. His formal studies in ceramic art technique were in Turkey. Now Mamandi creates Manna Pottery, decorative and functional ceramics reproduced from 7th century Mannea Art originals. With hand-painted figures, patterns, shapes and colors, each piece is one-of-a-kind with an ancient, yet contemporary look achieved by using lead-free, high-fire oxidation glazes. To describe his relationship to art, Mamandi quotes Thomas Merton: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

Schneider teaches and exhibits her work nationally and internationally, and her work is in both private and public collections.

In Juliette Hemingway’s work, viewers can imagine the grumbling tones of a saxophone or the sharp lines of a trombone. The sound is inside the musicians. You may not know the details of their experience or understand it, but it's visceral. That is what jazz is in Hemingway's work. It is the instinctual part of her life that she gives to viewers as a visual excerpt: a life that revolves around healing, autism, creativity and awareness. Jazz and the blue-hued musicians give you a sense of the deep-rooted experiences of her son and what it is to live with autism, and for her, straining to look into his secret world. Hemingway is based in Aurora, Colorado.

Special Exhibit | Staging Theater: Chinese Operatic Practice and Performance (April 26, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/63084 63084-15553757@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 26, 2019 8:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

This exhibition will be open every day, April 12-June 30, during Hatcher Library open hours.

Featuring the vibrant paintings of Peking opera face patterns, performance props, and rare books, this exhibition is a tribute to the University of Michigan's commitment to the presentation of Chinese operatic arts and culture. In the Winter Semester of 2019, a Peking opera performer specializing in the jing 淨 role engaged in a Chinese New Year artist-residency; the renown Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province, China, stages a production of The Lute (Pipa ji 琵琶記); and an international conference examines the critical role of media in the making and remaking of Ming-Qing literature and performance.

All of these endeavors offer the U-M faculty, staff, and students and Michiganers a chance to experience and embrace Chinese operatic arts and literary culture at the highest level and to introduce to the audience traditional Chinese aesthetic and moral values and their challenges and meanings in traditional and contemporary contexts.

Please visit https://ii.umich.edu/lrccs/news-events/events/videos-of-past-events.html to access the online recording of Peking opera performer, Li Yang, in vocal recitation and in the practice of hand painting his own operatic face pattern. Introductions are provided by Professor David Rolston and LRCCS Postdoctoral Fellow Anne Rebull with Professor Joseph Lam being painted at the end of the program as the character Cao Cao

This exhibition is co-organized by Carol Stepanchuk and Liangyu Fu, and is sponsored by the U-M Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Special thanks to Professor Joseph Lam, Professor David Rolston, and the Confucius Institute.

"Blind House: Utopia and Dystopia in the Age of Radical Transparency," by collaborative artists Paloma Muñoz and Walter Martin, is a razor-sharp work that brings into question our ideals of house and home, privacy, and safety.

The exhibition combines photographs the artists have envisioned of houses without windows as well an actual glass house planned for the center of the gallery, revisiting the whole notion of a glass house as an example of sophistication, luxury, and modernism.

In a darkening an era of surveillance and the internet, for Martin and Muñoz, "Blind House" serves as "a metaphorical solution to the full on campaign against personal privacy." Read the artists' statement at http://myumi.ch/6wxbk

In many applications, models of physical systems have known structure but unknown parameters. By viewing the unknown parameters as constant states, nonlinear estimation methods such as the extended Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, and ensemble Kalman filter can be used to estimate the states of the augmented system, thereby providing estimates of the parameters along with the dynamic states. These methods tend to be computationally expensive due to the need for Jacobians, ensembles, or adjoint, especially when the models are high-dimensional.

This dissertation presents the retrospective cost parameter estimation (RCPE) algorithm, which does not require gradients, ensembles, or adjoints. Rather, RCPE estimates unknown parameters from a single trajectory, and requires updating only as many adaptive integrator gains as the number of unknown parameters. RCPE is applicable to parameter estimation in linear and nonlinear models, where the parameterization may be either affine or nonaffine.

The main contribution of this work is to show that the parameter estimates may be permuted in an arbitrary way, and thus a permutation is needed to correctly associate each parameter estimate with the corresponding unknown parameter. RCPE is illustrated through several numerical examples including the Burgers equation and the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (GITM).

The Roman world was a colorful place. Although we often associate the Romans with white marble statues, these statues — as well as Roman homes, clothing, and art — were vibrant with color. This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world, how these colors were produced, where they were found, what the Romans thought about them, and how we study them today. We hope that visitors will think about what different colors mean to them, and how these meanings compare to the roles of colors in the ancient Roman world.

Abstract

Recent regulatory debate in the financial advice industry has focused on expanding fiduciary duties to broker-dealers. Proponents of this reform argue that it would improve the advice given to clients and limit losses from agency problems, while detractors counter that such regulation would increase compliance costs without directly improving consumer outcomes. This paper evaluates these questions empirically, using a transactions-level dataset for annuity sales from a major financial services provider and exploiting state-level variation in common law fiduciary duty. We find that fiduciary duty shifts the set of products chosen by consumers, away from variable annuities and towards fixed indexed annuities. Within variable annuities, fiduciary duty induces a shift towards lower-fee, higher-return annuities with a wider array of investment options. Finally, fiduciary duty induces exit of firms directly influenced by the regulation. We find almost no spillover effects—either on entry or on advice provided—onto advisers who are not directly impacted by the regulation. We develop a model that leverages the distributional changes in product sold in the market to argue that fiduciary duty operates through the intended mechanism of directly influencing advice.

Joshua Billings studied Classics, German, and Comparative Literature at Harvard and Oxford. Before arriving at Princeton in 2015, he held a research fellowship at Cambridge, and taught at Yale for three years.

His research focuses on ancient Greek literature and philosophy and modern intellectual history, with a particular concentration on tragedy. After a first book on modern conceptions of tragedy and the tragic (Genealogy of the Tragic: Greek Tragedy and German Philosophy, Princeton 2014), he is now working on fifth-century (BCE) drama and intellectual culture. The project is provisionally entitled “Enlightenment on Stage” and it focuses on drama’s presentation of mythical figures as a reflection of the so-called “Attic Enlightenment.” Dramatic and (broadly) philosophical texts alike, he argues, use the stories of myth to explore common conceptual issues; unfolding this entails a method that recognizes the distinctive significance that myth has for thought in fifth-century culture.

Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s, that question was hotly debated as artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.

EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF A MUSEUM AS A CULTURAL REPOSITORY

In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017, artist and distinguished U–M art professor Jim Cogswell was invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project, the artist adhered a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums' permanent collections.  The juxtaposed images address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge, memory, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.  Cosmogonic Tattoos is on view at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through May 2, 2018 and UMMA through June 2, 2019.

Fashioned in the Amami islands of Japan, Oshima Tsumugi silk has long been admired for its understated beauty, incredible softness, and comfortable year-round lightness. The rich fabric is created through a remarkable and  laborious process: from pattern design and cotton-thread binding, to over 100 rounds of plant and mud dyeing and weaving. This series of steps may take up to one year. Despite the high production values and complexities, Oshima Tsumugi kimono can be worn only for non-ceremonial occasions, since woven fabric is considered to be a less elevated technique than paint-dyed fabric.

This special installation introduces UMMA audiences to one of the ten exceptional Oshima Tsumugi kimono recently donated to the Museum by Kazuko Miyake. Thanks to Mrs. Miyake and her older sister, Shizuko Iwata, who previously gifted her kimono and other formal garment collection, UMMA holds more than 300 traditional Japanese ensembles.

This kimono was recently gifted to UMMA by Ms. Kazuko Miyake.

When describing the dynamics of a sheet of paper being crumpled one may be tempted to only take the elastic response of the thin sheet into account and consider only those deformations which minimize the elastic energy of the crumpled sheet. However, most materials yield and deform plastically, leaving permanent scars in the thin sheet. Indeed, the simple process of crumpling a sheet of paper with our hands results in a complex network of interconnected permanent creases of many sizes and orientations, along which the sheet preferentially bends. Thereby, history dependence is introduced into the system. I will present an experimental study of the dynamics of crumpling. Specifically, we investigate how a crease network evolves when a thin elastoplastic sheet is repeatedly crumpled, opened up and then re-crumpled. Is there a maximally crumpled state after which the sheet can be crumpled without further plastic deformations, or do creases and defects keep accumulating forever? Surprisingly, we find that much of the complex dynamics of the crease patterns can be captured using one simple global measure, which is independent of the crumpling history.

Network data represent connectivity relationships between individuals of interest and are common in many scientific fields, including biology, sociology, medicine and healthcare. Often, additional node features are also available together with the data on relationships. Both types of data contain important information about individual characteristics and the population structure. This thesis focuses on developing statistical machine learning methods and theory for network data with node features.

We first study the problem of community detection for networks with node features using a model-based approach. Most existing models make strong conditional independence assumptions between the network, features and community memberships, which limits the applicability of the model. In our work, we develop a general statistical framework to describe the dependence structure between the link structure, node features and communities. Further, we propose two families of models that are the most general under this framework with the least conditional independence assumptions between the three components. We have established mild conditions for model identifiability and developed variational EM algorithms to estimate model parameters and community memberships. Extensive simulation studies and application to a food web and a lawyer friendship network indicate that the proposed methods work well.

The second project focuses on the problem of node classification using both individual features and the network. In a classical setting, data points are assumed independent and identically distributed, and a data point is classified using only its own features. When a network between the data points is available, it often contains additional information about class memberships and can be utilized to improve classification performance. In this work, we develop a general statistical framework for network augmented classification. Under this framework, we derive the optimal Bayes classifiers for two general families of distributions incorporating node features and networks. Further, we establish asymptotic consistency results for plug-in classifiers with respect to the optimal ones under the two families. We have also applied these general approaches to specific models and developed effective classifiers for practical use. The proposed methods have been evaluated using both simulation studies and a teenage friendship network, and show promising results.

The final contribution of this thesis is on link prediction for incomplete network data. Most existing link prediction methods require at least partial observation of connections for every node. In real-world networks, however, there often exist nodes that do not have any link information, and it is of interest to make link predictions for them using only their node features. We consider a general setup in which a network consists of three types of nodes, nodes only having feature information, nodes only having link information, and nodes having both. Our goal is to make link predictions for nodes having only feature information. Under this setting, we have proposed a family of generative models for incomplete networks with node features, and we have developed a variational auto-encoder algorithm for model estimation and link prediction and investigated different encoder structures. We have also designed a cross-validation scheme under the problem setting for model selection. The proposed method has been evaluated on an online social network and two citation networks and achieves superior performance comparing with existing methods.

The mobility and displacement of the Black body, from port to holding cell, to ward and out, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain, otherness, power and triumph, "she was here, once" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.

In summer 2018, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement, sound, and solidarity, eight Black women and girls, wearing large needle felted wool masks, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).

The multi-layered piece has produced a short film, mini documentary, photography, and performance masks, on display in her solo exhibition, "she was here, once" in Lane Hall.

Lane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.

Accessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall, on each floor of the building. A gender neutral restroom is available on the first floor.

Using an interdisciplinary lens, the exhibit explores the heterogeneity in the contours of brown narratives among South Asians in the Midwest. Although there is an emerging interest in the social construction of brownness on its own terms, most of such explorations are situated either in the East or West Coast. Rarely have the narratives of brownness in the Midwest been explored. The Midwest, particularly Ann Arbor and the greater Detroit area, has a sizable population of South Asians who work in a variety of blue collar to professional jobs that range from motel cleaners to doctors.

This exhibit was curated by Ram Mahalingam, Osman Khan, and Aswin Punathamebkar.

The Department of Linguistics and the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science are pleased to welcome Ina Bornkessel-Schlesewsky and Matthias Schlesewsky, University of South Australia, who will present a talk titled "Inter-individual differences in predictive coding during language processing." All are welcome!

ABSTRACT
Predictive coding provides a compelling theory of how the human brain processes information, with the potential to provide a unified explanation across a wide range of different cognitive domains. In spite of the prominence of predictive coding-based accounts in cognitive neuroscience, however, little is currently known about whether and how predictive coding mechanisms differ between individuals. In our laboratory, we have recently begun pursuing a research program that aims to systematically examine such inter-individual differences, with a particular focus on language processing as the cognitive domain of interest. Here, we will present what we have learned so far. Our results provide evidence for extensive inter-individual differences even in young, healthy adults. They further suggest that this variability is related to basic neurobiological influences on perceptual sampling and information processing (individual alpha frequency), as well as to the quality of an individual’s language model. We will discuss potential consequences of this variability for predictive coding architectures as well as implications for a lifespan-based perspective on the neurobiology of cognitive processing.

Darcy R. Bowden has been working in clay for ten years following a forty-year hiatus. In the ensuing years she taught art in the Ann Arbor Public Schools and worked as a printmaker. This recent body of work combines hand-built forms with playful graphic compositions akin to those in her prints. Disparate shapes and elements find unity in her work. Influences include modernist design, Japanese textiles and abstract artists Ellsworth Kelly and Franz Kline. A Flint, Michigan native, she has lived in the Ann Arbor area for over forty years having earned a BFA, MA and teacher certification from Eastern Michigan University.

Barbara J. Schneider’s studio is in the Starline Factory in Harvard, Illinois. She has an extensive background in surface design, and she works with cloth, paint, dye and thread. The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi (aesthetic of transience and imperfection) is a strong influence in her work. This collection is a series of stitched textiles that are a reinterpretation of traditional still life paintings. These small, intimate artworks use vintage Japanese boro fabrics as backgrounds for personal objects that contain a Wabi-Sabi spirit.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (April 27, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452703@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 27, 2019 11:00am

Lead support for "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

#CosmogonicTattoos

Lead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional support for the artist's project is provided by the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

Being Brown: South Asian Narratives of Brownness in Southeast Michigan (April 27, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62493 62493-15372982@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 27, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

“When I see a work of art, something happens in my heart.”

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Kelsey Museum! We begin by reading aloud "The Museum," written by Susan Verde and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. Then we explore the galleries to find art and artifacts that make us want to sing, to feel, to dance, to think, to create, and to connect with the people of the past. Take home a booklet of activities and coloring pages for further discovery! This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Thiagarajan’s paintings greet viewers with the familiarity of repetitive patterns, while creating an exciting opportunity to explore texture and geometry. Based in Wood Dale, Illinois, Thiagarajan exhibits her work throughout the Midwest and will be participating in the 2019 Ann Arbor South University Art Fair.

Gifts of Art presents Manna Pottery by Rezgar Mamandi (April 28, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61746 61746-15179112@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 28, 2019 8:00am

Organized By: Gifts of Art

Schneider teaches and exhibits her work nationally and internationally, and her work is in both private and public collections.

Location: University Hospitals
Organized By: Gifts of Art

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (April 28, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452757@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 28, 2019 12:00pm

Being Brown: South Asian Narratives of Brownness in Southeast Michigan (April 28, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62493 62493-15372983@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 28, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Art museums generally give primacy to the sense of sight. Religious and ritual objects, on the other hand, stimulate an array of multisensory experiences. Focusing on works from UMMA’s collection associated with different types of Japanese Buddhism, we engage all of the six senses in this exhibition. These six are integral to Buddhist devotion: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, and mind (or the activity of thinking, including what is perceived via the other senses). The “Six Senses” gallery experience extends beyond vision to include: the sound of chanting and ritual implements; the fragrance of incense; the feel of bronze, ceramic, and silk; and the creation of mental images. Gain a deeper understanding of the nature and histories of objects used in Buddhist practice with a docent tour of this fascinating exhibition.

Lead support for The Six Senses of Buddhism is provided by the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies.

Meet Me at UMMA invites people with mild memory loss to enjoy a guided gallery experience along with family members or care partners. This program is designed for people who live at home and their companions.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing mild memory loss, research has shown that the visual and expressive arts can be good for your mind. In addition, great enjoyment is to be found in seeking out the sights, sounds, textures, and good feelings that come with looking at, learning, and sharing feelings about paintings, music, and other creative arts.

UMMA's trained docents will accompany small groups for a guided tour and provide the opportunity for everyone to experience different kinds of art and share their responses.

Meet Me at UMMA is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Monroe-Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund for Outreach to the State of Michigan, and individual donors.

Son Volt wsg Ian Noe (April 28, 2019 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/60282 60282-14857779@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 28, 2019 7:30pm

On Son Volt’s new record, "Union," present and past mingle into strong confluence. The 13 new songs written by founder Jay Farrar confront our turbulent politics and articulate the clarity and comfort music can offer in the tumult. “There are so many forces driving our country apart,” observes Jay. “What can we do to bring our society back together?” The country and blues sounds explored by Son Volt on its last two records (2013’s "Honky Tonk" and 2017’s "Notes of Blue") linger in the grooves of "Union." But the new record nods to many other mile markers along the band’s 25-year path. Some tunes offer a powerful return to the ringing lyrical clarity of 2005’s "Okemah" and "Melody of Riot,"and 2007’s "The Search." Others hearken back to the freewheeling poetic melodicism of 1994’s "Trace" and 1997’s "Straightaways." This is an album and a show that see one of Americana's great bands both looking back and continuing to drive forward.

Kentucky songwriter Ian Noe opens.

The Future of Work in Detroit (April 29, 2019 7:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/58991 58991-14636441@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 29, 2019 7:45am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Imagine the nature of work in future generations. There will be careers not even contemplated today with the many advances in technology and artificial intelligence. In our Future of Work trip we will explore the re-purposing of space to design new work areas in downtown Detroit.

We will start with a 2 1/2 hour walking tour of the Quicken Loans complex covering multiple buildings. This showcases the renovation of some historic buildings in addition to creatively designed work spaces.

In the afternoon we will move on to Tech Town, Detroit’s entrepreneurial hub affiliated with Wayne State University. We’ll have a catered lunch (sandwiches and salads), view the creative work areas, and learn about their expansion efforts followed by a panel presentation. The panelists will share their experiences and thoughts about the future of work, artificial intelligence, and local initiatives moving Detroit forward.

The price of the trip includes bus transportation, lunch, snacks, and gratuities.

This trip for those 50 and over will take place on Wednesday, June 5, from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., however you must register for the trip early and there are no refunds without replacements inside 30 days of trip departure.

Please see the OLLI Web Site for additional information.

Hemingway is based in Aurora, Colorado.

she was here, once (April 29, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/59501 59501-14875214@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 29, 2019 8:00am
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Direct detection experiments have delivered impressive limits on the interaction strength of dark matter with nuclei. A large experimental program is underway to extend the sensitivity of direct detection experiments, however, such experiments are becoming increasingly difficult and costly. Recently, we proposed paleo-detectors as analternative approach to the direct detection of dark matter: Instead of searching for dark matter induced nuclear recoils in a real-time laboratory experiment, we propose to search for the traces of dark matter interactions recorded in ancient minerals over geological time-scales. In this talk I will discuss this proposal, including ways to mitigate backgrounds and methods to read out tracks from ancient minerals. I will also briefly discuss some preliminary results for applications of paleo-detectors beyond dark matter, e.g. for searching for neutrinos from core collapse supernovae.

Our understanding of polar organic reactivity is based on relationships between rate and equilibrium constants. Thus, strong bases are generally considered to be good nucleophiles as well as poor nucleofuges. Though exceptions from this general rule have long been known, a systematic analysis has been problematic, because rate constants for the reactions of nucleophiles with C-centered electrophiles have often been correlated with Brønsted basicities (i. e., affinities towards the proton). For that reason, the origin of deviations from Brønsted correlations could often not unambiguously be assigned.

In the last two decades, we have created comprehensive nucleophilicity,1 nucleofugality,2 and Lewis basicity scales3 by using differently substituted benzhydrylium ions with widely variable reactivity but equal steric demand as reference electrophiles,1 electrofuges,2 and Lewis acids.3 Relationships between these kinetic and thermodynamic parameters will be discussed with emphasis on examples where the commonly assumed proportionalities break down.4
I will discuss the origin of several counterintuitive phenomena, e.g. why strong nucleophiles can also be good nucleofuges, and why weak nucleophiles sometimes substitute strong nucleophiles in SN2 reactions. It will be shown that solvolysis rate constants of alkyl bromides and chlorides, but not of carboxylates provide accurate information about thermodynamic stabilities (more precise: Lewis acidities) of carbocations. Eventually it will be discussed why carbocations, which are formed slowly in SN1 reactions are not always good electrophiles.5 The role of intrinsic barriers for controlling organic reactivity will be analyzed.

UM Psychology Community Talk: Adversity, Resilience and the Developing Brain (April 29, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52631 52631-12910440@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 29, 2019 7:00pm

Abstract
Childhood adversity, such as growing up in poverty or experiencing parental neglect, is associated with a host of negative outcomes, including depression and low educational attainment. Although it is understood that these types of adversity alter the brain and increase the risk for problems, it is not known what forms of adversity are most pernicious and how they affect the brain. In the presentation, Dr. Monk will describe a study comprised of predominantly adolescents from low-income backgrounds who have been followed since birth. Using brain imaging methods, Dr. Monk shows how two specific and chronic forms of adversity, violence exposure and social deprivation, impact brain development in different ways. At the same time, the adolescents show a striking degree of resilience, despite the challenging circumstances. Dr. Monk will discuss both social and biological mechanisms that might explain the resilience.

Bio

Dr. Monk is a Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. He is also a Research Professor in the Survey Research Center at ISR and the Center for Human Growth and Development. Dr. Monk received his PhD in Child Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota. He then went on to the NIMH Intramural Research Program where he was a postdoc and later a fellow. His research program involves two active and related lines of research. In the first line, he is examining how poverty-related stressors and the developmental timing of those stressors impact brain development, stress hormone regulation and anxiety as well as depression symptoms during adolescence. For the second line of research, he is investigating how effective treatments for anxiety (cognitive behavioral therapy or medication) alter brain function and how these brain alterations relate to clinical outcome in children and adolescents.

Who Will Write Our History? (April 29, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63057 63057-15543236@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 29, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Judaic Studies

In honor of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day
The new documentary, Who Will Write Our History, about the secret archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, will have a community screening April 29, at 7:30 at the Michigan Theater.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Jeffrey Veidlinger, Genevieve Zubrzycki, and facilitated by Sarah Raful Whinston

Who Will Write Our History, based on Samuel Kassow’s book, is about historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who gathered a secret band of journalists, scholars, and artists imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto to collect and record the story of the war from the Jewish point of view. Known by the code name Oyneg Shabes, their goal was to defy their murderous enemy with the ultimate weapon – the truth. They risked everything so that their archive would survive, even if they did not.

Sam Amidon // Flashpapr (April 29, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/61701 61701-15170150@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 29, 2019 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Sam Amidon is a singer and multi-instrumentalist originally hailing from Brattleboro, Vermont. He has released multiple albums of radically reimagined folksongs on the Bedroom Community and Nonesuch labels. Called "part preservationist, part visionary" by the Boston Globe, Sam offers reworkings of traditional American ballads, hymns and work songs, with the New York Times writing that he "transforms all of the songs, changing their colors and loading them with trapdoors." Along the way Sam has recorded or performed as a guest artists with musicians such as pianist Jason Moran, indie rock band Bon Iver, and Glen Hansard.

Flashpapr is a Michigan band, known (or faintly remembered) for playing broken folk music between 1996 and 2004. After a period of inactivity, Flashpapr now performs as a duo of its original members, Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) and Jacob Danziger (recordings with His Name Is Alive, Steve Roden, Cynthia Nelson, The Naysayer and Doveman). Along with Zach Wallace, Ben Bracken, and Ida Pearle, their three albums captured the sad and hopeful feeling of being alive, and their word-of-mouth live performances (in kitchens, living rooms, garages and back yards) were uncomfortably earnest attempts to invert the relationship between the band and audience. "You are my best friend, you are the most beautiful thing I keep inside my heart" was basically the idea.

Mandalas are used for facilitating personal growth, healing, grounding and transformation.

Gifts of Art presents Manna Pottery by Rezgar Mamandi (April 30, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/61746 61746-15179114@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 30, 2019 8:00am
Location: Taubman Center
Organized By: Gifts of Art
