More than strict representations of the world we inhabit, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate, appropriate, and oppress, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.

The exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. Please verify hours on the library's website: https://www.lib.umich.edu

Splendors of the religious and artistic endeavors of Byzantine manuscript makers are on display in this exhibit of highlights from the Greek manuscript collection at the University of Michigan Library Special Collections Research Center. The collection — 110 codices (bound manuscripts) and fragments written in Greek from the fourth to the nineteenth centuries C.E. — is the largest such collection in the Western Hemisphere and provides unique insights into this era of achievement in textual transmission, calligraphy, illumination, and bookbinding. The exhibit will be open during Audubon Room hours.

A digital version of the exhibit will be available in the Audubon Room and online, and allows visitors to explore other pages of the manuscripts on display and other manuscripts from the collection.

This exhibit celebrates two recent publications based on the collection:

* Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Vol. 1., by Nadezhda Kavrus-Hoffmann (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2021)

* Tradition and Individuality: Bindings from the University of Michigan Greek Manuscript Collection, by Julia Miller (Ann Arbor: The Legacy Press, 2021)

How to Build a Disaster Proof House (April 8, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/93151 93151-21700981@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 8, 2022 9:00am
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty, displacement, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place, protected from bad weather and circumstance, in an era of floods, fires, violence, abuse and pandemics?

Snelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds, private and public.

Snelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory,” or open studio, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves, and the rooms change, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence.

Snelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects, bright colors, light, video, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed, while at the same time, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live.

Through workshops guided by Snelling, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home, safety, and dreams.

The experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.

The mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging, or where we come from, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations.

Snelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination.

In her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities, racial biases, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people.

“The ongoing lack of affordable health care, systematic racism, class division, economic downturn, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…," states Snelling. "By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”

-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator

The overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.

The project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC), The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.

The Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8, 2022).

In 2020, Mr. Millett was the opening plenary speaker for the International AIDS Conference. He is an alumnus of Dartmouth College and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

About John Lamont Peterson:
Dr. John Lamont Peterson (1949-2021) was a leading figure in early HIV/AIDS research and a mentor to many Black behavioral and social scientists. He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1974. After teaching at Claremont’s McKenna College and Graduate School in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and realizing the growing impact of the early AIDS epidemic on African American men, Dr. Peterson joined the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) at the University of California, San Francisco, where he served as a Research Scientist from 1986 to 1993. In 1994 he joined Georgia State University’s Department of Psychology, first as an associate professor, then as a full professor from 2003 until his retirement in 2015. Over the course of his career, he contributed to understanding the predictors of HIV/AIDS risk reduction, the effects of behavioral interventions to reduce this risk behavior, and the social determinants of racial disparities in HIV infection, primarily among Black men who have sex with men. Dr. Peterson’s mentorship to many laid the foundation for the ever-expanding field of HIV research and advocacy. This event is named in his honor.

About SOAR:
SOAR is a two-year intensive academic and research mentoring experience that aims to prepare students for graduate education and eventual research careers in behavioral and social science research on HIV/AIDS, with a focus on sexual and gender minority communities. SOAR is funded by a five-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR). The program is administered out of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, in collaboration with the School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Social Work, and College of Literature Science & the Arts.

Abstract: In this work we consider bootstrap-based inference methods for functions of the parameter vector in the presence of many moment inequalities where the number of moment inequalities, denoted by p, is possibly much larger than the sample size n. In particular this covers the case of subvector inference, such as the inference on a single component associated with a treatment/policy variable of interest. We consider a min-max of (centered and non-centered) Studentized statistics and study the properties of the associated critical values. In order to establish that we provide a new finite sample analysis that does not rely on Donsker's properties and establish new central limit theorems for the min-max of the components of random matrices. Furthermore, we consider the anti-concentration properties of the min-max of the components of a Gaussian matrix and propose bootstrap based methods to estimate them. In turn this provides a valid data-driven to set the tuning parameters of the bootstrap-based inference methods. Importantly, the tuning parameters generalize choices of literature for Donsker's classes (and showing why those would not be appropriate in our setting) which might better characterize finite sample behavior. This is co-authored with Federico Bugni and Victor Chernozhukov.

17th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium (April 8, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89659 89659-21664742@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 8, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at the University of Michigan presents the 17th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium: Racial Justice and Anti-Racist Research in EEB. We are delighted to announce that our featured speaker, Steward Pickett, distinguished urban ecologist from the Cary Institute and this year’s eminent ecologist of the Ecological Society of America, will open the symposium. A panel discussion led by Nicholas Reo, Associate Professor of Native American Studies at Dartmouth will bring the symposium to its conclusion.

Eight early career scholars who are transforming our discipline through anti-racist and justice-centered research that pushes our understanding of the links between EEB research and society, will present their perspectives in many areas of EEB, such as Global Environmental Change, Genomics and Population Genetics, Urban Ecology and Evolution, Environmental History, STEM Education, Marine Ecology, Water Security, Theoretical Ecology and Evolution, Global Food Systems, and Disease Ecology. The goal of this symposium is to provide a space for the EEB community to think imaginatively about the future of our discipline.

The symposium will begin on Saturday, March 19, 2022 (2 - 6 pm EDT) in-person and live-streamed, followed by three consecutive virtual Fridays (noon - 2 pm EDT) from March 25– April 8, 2022. Two to three participants will present each Friday, followed by a moderated discussion. For the symposium, we consider early career scientists as senior graduate students (who stand to receive their Ph.D. within two years), postdoctoral researchers, faculty or staff scientists within their first or second year, and researchers at equivalent career stages who are not affiliated with an academic institution.

While the symposium presents the work of rising early career scientists, it is open to all (i.e., you don’t have to be in your early career to attend).

Please contact the planning committee with questions: ecss-2022@umich.edu.

REGISTRATION is required for Zoom entry. You will be provided with the link and passcode upon registration. https://myumi.ch/ECSSregister

Maintaining the folding health of the proteome is a critical cellular task. It has recently become appreciated that RNAs and RNA:protein complexes play important roles in maintenance of proteomic health. Here, we investigate the role of RNAs in direct modulation of protein aggregation and folding. To begin, an in vitro screen identified that G-quadruplexes are highly efficient general molecular chaperones. Testing these G-quadruplexes in E. coli demonstrated that these RNAs improve the protein folding environment in the cell. Protein folding experiments showed that some G-quadruplexes directly accelerate protein folding. In-cell experiments then found that this acceleration of protein folding drives better quality protein folding in E. coli. Finally, fast protein:RNA oligomerization was discovered for several G-quadruplexes, providing a biophysical explanation for the outsized role of G-quadruplexes in protein aggregation diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease and ALS. Together, these studies provide a striking example of how RNA structure impacts protein folding and misfolding disease. We will additionally discuss the use of citizen science both to improve structural biology research and biochemistry education using the biochemistry video game Foldit.

Data Science/AI/ML has been a hot field for the past decade but it’s still not well-defined by industry. Different companies have different definitions of what it means to be a data scientist. I have spent a lot of my career trying to understand what it is that I even do and have identified useful patterns in my work that have developed my perceptions of the field and its potential. Physicists are particularly well-equipped to work across the entire spectrum of Data Science projects, so the question for a recent graduate becomes, what projects do you want to do? UKRAINIAN SISTERS, an exhibition of drawings by Ukrainian artists Lesia Kulchynska and Kateryna Lysovenko that reflect their experience of war, is on view in the Art & Architecture building (west wall of first floor) through April 30.
The series of drawings by Lesia Kulchynska ("War Diary") and Kateryna Lysovenko ("Dictator's Food") was made during the first month of Russian military invasion in Ukraine. These drawings reflect their experience of war.
Join Stamps MFA student and curator Oksana Briukhovetska at the reception Tuesday, April 12, at 5pm: you will hear more about artists, who are now refugees in Europe with their children. You can provide feedback that will be send back to artists, and to discuss the questions: How can art express horrors of the war? Can we understand them without having such experience? Can finally art be helpful to enhance sympathy?
Lesia Kulchynska, PhD, born in 1984, is a Kyiv-based art curator and visual studies researcher affiliated with the Research Platform of the Pinchuk Art Center. She teached cultural studies at the Kyiv Academy of Media Arts, worked as a curator at the Visual Culture Research Center and Set Independent Art Space (Kyiv). In 2018-19 was a Fulbright Scholar residing at New York University. Her research interests are the theory and history of the image and the theory of cinema.
Kateryna Lysovenko, Artist, born in 1989, graduated from Odesa Hrekov Arts College, National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv) and Kyiv Academy of Media Arts. In her artworks, she addresses the topic of violence which is oftentimes caused by political, religious and ideological oppression. Worked and lived in Kyiv.

An Organizational Perspective on the Civic Lives of Cities (April 8, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94336 94336-21734386@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 8, 2022 1:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

The Civic Life of Cities Lab studies the threads that tie nonprofit organizations to the communities they serve. Through interviews with more than 1,400 leaders and analyses of civic activities in seven metropolitan areas around the world—San Francisco, Seattle, Shenzhen, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, and Vienna—we analyze geographic and political variation in how nonprofits weave together urban life and contribute to the vitality of civil society. Our ambition is to develop a place-based organizational theory that offers fresh answers to questions about accountability, embeddedness, and voice. In this talk, I will focus mostly on our work in the San Francisco Bay Area, but will draw illustrative data from our other cities. In a region that is ostensibly progressive but marked by massive inequalities in wealth and housing, how do Bay Area nonprofits navigate the divides between the haves and have nots? Although the Bay Area sector displays diverse approaches to repairing social ruptures, there is a consistent theme of re-building and re-creating community. Our findings reveal an ecosystem that is developing its own model of what community directed management looks like, neither tethered strictly to a Left Coast ethos, nor displaying uniform responses to strong institutional pressures.

I will discuss the potential importance of a dark-sector phase transition in the early universe in setting the measured relic abundance, for a simple scenario with strongly interacting dark matter. Enhancement of the dark matter density within shrinking pockets of the high-temperature phase leads to a dramatic reduction in the late-time dark matter abundance, allowing for much heavier dark matter than in the standard thermal freezeout scenario. I will show new results on a class of specific models realizing this scenario, including experimental constraints and the effects of entropy injection from decay of metastable dark-sector particles.

Recent global syntheses of paleoclimate proxy data from the Common Era (the past ~2,000 years) have provided important context for how global temperature varied prior to, and after, the industrial revolution. Synthesizing hydroclimate paleodata, however, has remained an ongoing challenge due to the complexity of the global water cycle as well as the complexity of hydro-sensitive paleoclimate proxies. This presentation shares a new effort to evaluate changes in the global water cycle during the Common Era through proxies that track the stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of environmental waters (e.g., precipitation, lake water, seawater). More than 600 records were compiled from globally distributed, diverse geologic archives such as speleothems, corals, lake and marine sediments, ice cores, and tree rings. We use this compilation and an isotope-enabled climate model to investigate regional to global scale variations in the water cycle during the Common Era, particularly during the last millennium. We then explore applications to regional climate features, including the Pacific Walker Circulation and regional responses to volcanic eruptions. We leverage both modern and paleo data in order to provide unique perspectives on how the water cycle behaves as the planet warms and cools.

Per F. Peterson
Distinguished Professor, UC Berkeley
Chief Nuclear Officer, Kairos Power

Abstract
Over the last two decades the DOE Nuclear Energy Universities Program (NEUP) has had major impacts by supporting innovative research and training the next generation of nuclear energy professionals. This talk describes the origins of the concept of fluoride salt cooled, high temperature reactors, that led to multi-university NEUP-supported research efforts that verified the technical feasibility to design and license reactors using high-temperature TRISO fuel with a molten salt coolant. This enabled the founding of the startup company Kairos Power in December, 2016. This talk will also describe the progress at Kairos Power, including the current Nuclear Regulatory Commission review of the Construction Permit Application for the Hermes Low Power Demonstration Reactor.

Bio
Per F. Peterson is the Chief Nuclear Officer for Kairos Power, where he guides nuclear technology review and advises on scientific and technical topics for KP-FHR technology development and licensing. He is also a Distinguished Professor and holds the William and Jean McCallum Floyd Chair in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at U.C. Berkeley. His research and teaching at UC Berkeley have focused on high-temperature fission and fusion energy systems, as well as topics related to the safety and security of nuclear materials and waste management.

.

Masimba Hwati works across sculpture, sound, performance, video, and text. His recent sound sculpture, Ngoromera, is featured in the new installation of UMMA’s African Art collection, We Write to You About Africa. In this talk, Hwati will reflect on the ways in which the socio-political conditions he encounters shape his creative process with stories from Harare, Detroit, South Carolina, Florida, Weimar, and Vienna. He will also explore the connections that intersect sculpture, sound, performance and ritual in his work and how these connections develop and inform each other.

Masimba Hwati is interested in the places where sculpture, sound, and performance meet. His interdisciplinary artistic practice explores various forms and rituals of cultural resistance. Born in Harare, a restless place of precarity and constant flux, Hwati describes his practice as an exploration of the nature of sound and its connection to power negotiation and resistance narratives in post-colonial contexts.

Following his talk, please join Hwati in the gallery for a performance of Ngoromera during Feel Good Friday at UMMA.

Masimba Hwati holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is a Ph.D. in Art practice, candidate at the Academy of Fine Art Vienna. He is a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture alumn class of 2019. He studied and taught sculpture at Harare Polytechnic Art school. Collections Include Manchester Contemporary, University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), Iziko South African National Gallery, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Scott White Contemporary, San Diego, Jorge M Perez Collection Miami Florida, George R. Nnamdi Collection, Detroit Michigan. National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Gervanne & Matthias Leridon Collection. In 2021 he showed and performed at the British textile Biennale in Blackburn, United Kingdom. In 2015 he showed at the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 56th edition. He is an honorary research fellow at Rhodes University  Fine Arts Department in Grahamstown, SA. Solo, and group shows include Belgium. Zimbabwe, South Africa, Berlin, Weimar, United States, France, and Canada.

Established through the generosity of Dr. Herbert Sloan, the annual Doris Sloan Memorial Program honors one of the Museum’s most ardent friends and supporters, Doris Sloan, a long-time UMMA docent.  Presented with the support of the Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series.

The exhibition We Write to You About Africa was developed in consultation with many partners, including the U-M African Studies Center, the African Students Association, the African Graduate Student Association.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

The JLT Banquet is a celebration of our Latinx community and of Juan Luis Tienda’s life. Juan Luis was a Michigan Law leader and student who tirelessly worked to advance Latinx civil rights. He sadly passed away in 1976, a year before graduating. Each year, we gather to remember his impactful life and to recognize those who follow in his footsteps.

The JLT Scholarship is awarded to 1Ls who have demonstrated a commitment to working for the benefit of our Latinx community within the Law Quad and beyond. Despite composing 18.5% of the U.S. population, Latinx attorneys represent only 5% of U.S. lawyers. JLT is a powerful way to strengthen and support the Latinx community here at Michigan Law. We invite you to please make a tax-deductible donation directly to the JLT Scholarship Fund.

The banquet will be held at the Graduate Hotel in Ann Arbor on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 7 PM. You may support us through attending the event or by making a donation on Venmo to @JLT-Donations. You can empower LLSA members and, like Juan Luis, be a force for equality.

Devised Dance/Theatre piece inspired by short stories by Haruki Murakami and many more

Directed by: Tzveta Kassabova with the cast

“And then I realized that the deep darkness inside me had vanished. Suddenly. As suddenly as it has come. I raised myself from the sand and, without bothering either to take off my shoes or roll up my cuffs, walked into the surf to let the waves lap at my ankles.” What does it mean to tell a story? Who is the storyteller, who is listening? What real geography is surrounding us and what landscape do we imagine in our stories?

Content Advisory: Parts of this show are created for adults only. Viewer discretion is advised due to themes, audio, and images of natural disaster impacts, explicit violence, death, suicide, racism, sexism, sex, prostitution, and drugs.

This performance features the choreography and performance work of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance seniors as they near completion of their degree. Lydia Dunn, Stephanie Gennusa, Rowan Janusiak, Mariah Stevens, Kevin Wang, and Sasha Yakovenko will each present a solo and a group dance, featuring additional dance majors.

Stephanie Gennusa examines and challenges the capitalistic urge to attach self-value to one’s labor and productivity in their group work, we all fake it till we die. Gennusa’s solo, Have We Met Before?, utilizes multimedia techniques to explore the multitude of different ways to view one body in time and space.

Rowan Janusiak shares their journey of body reclamation and dissonance in their solo, frangible virility. They investigate what it means to be perceived by the world when you don't want to be perceived at all. Janusiak’s group, the motive behind the game is self-protection, grapples with the phenomenon of how closely pleasure and violence exist in our bodies: questioning ideologies society has created around pleasure, specifically the stigmitization of sex and how pleasure can be reclaimed as a force for transformative activism.

Tal Ayala Kamin explores the intersection of tradition, community, and individuality in Echad Mi Yodea, a group work defining the importance of knowing where you come from in order to know where you are going. Her solo, Yes, focuses on the evolution of self, through the use of spoken word and media projection.

Mariah Stevens’ work, Unity within Diversity, is an afrobeat hip hop fusion dance celebration, woven with hints of contemporary, vogue, and street dance. It emphasizes the power of togetherness, as individual differences join forces to create something amazing. Her solo investigates themes of healing, restoration, and contentment.

Kevin Wang’s solo, a space to call my own, explores the purpose of personal space and examines how much space we have. Wang’s group, I am us, investigates the relationship between a person and their respective communities in order to answer the question: Who do we represent?

Sasha Yakovenko’s two dances can be conceptualized as an analysis of his own mind and experiences. His solo, The Fool on the Hill Stares to Kilimanjaro, is centered around ideas of loss and failure due to one’s own folly and imperfections. Yakovenko’s group, Burning Down the House, presents a dark, satirical perspective on American culture; where sexuality and white-goodness are presented in various forms of media to distract from the darkness that forms the foundation of societal stability and rots away at the core of the world.

Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.

April is National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem, write a poem, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said, "Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better."

How to Get Involved

Noon Poems
Take a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv.

Prompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge
Creative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.

Pop-Up Poems
Stroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows, on the diag, on buses, and more.

Saturday Morning Physics | A Quantum Hologram for Black Holes (April 9, 2022 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/92720 92720-21694814@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 9, 2022 10:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Saturday Morning Physics

Black holes are massive objects so dense that the gravitational force holds light within a distance called the event horizon. This strong gravitational force also causes black holes to grow as energy is converted into the black holes' mass. Steven Hawking explored this flow of energy bringing the science of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy to black holes. A black-hole's entropy, a thermodynamic measure of the information hidden within the event horizon, is proportional to its surface area. This remarkable finding points to analogies between these spacetime singularities and systems of particles, such as gasses. In this talk, Professor Pando Zayas will describe how Quantum Mechanics alters this picture, making corrections to the black-hole entropy that affects black-hole physics.

The thrill of a scientific discovery, the adventure of science and the beauty of nature are central in this show.

Kyshona has always lent her voice and music to those that feel they have been silenced or forgotten. She began her career as a music therapist, writing her first songs with her patients--the students and inmates under her care. She soon found the need to write independently and find her own voice, and endeavor which led her to the fertile ground of the Nashville creative community and songwriting culture. Since then, she has learned how to balance her music career with her passion to heal the hurting. Audiences will find a common thread of empowerment, overcoming adversity, and finding hope in her work.

The Friday night concert will be available for livestreamed at https://myumi.ch/DanceWatch

Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography (April 10, 2022 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/90765 90765-21673571@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 10, 2022 8:00am

Two years ago, the U-M and local communities stepped up to help neighbors in need in the first weeks of the pandemic, by giving healthy food and essential supplies through a Michigan Medicine donation drive for Food Gatherers.

Now, a new food and toiletry drive through April 10 will help address food insecurity in the area that is still 7% higher than before the pandemic.

Donors can drop non-perishable food and toiletries, including diapers, at Dock 90 of U-M’s North Campus Research Complex, at 2800 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor, just off Huron Parkway.

Donations can be left between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day of the week during the drive. Volunteers from across Michigan Medicine will be available to help unload donations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A list of most-needed items is available at https://michmed.org/mostneeded .

Donors can also give money online at http://www.foodgatherers.org/um for Food Gatherers to use in purchasing food at wholesale prices.

Project Management Certification (April 10, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91083 91083-21677008@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 10, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students, alumni, and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students:
$550 for U-M alumni or public
$425 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$325 for U-M Ross School of Business or U-M College of Engineering staff
$225 for Tauber Institute students
$145 for previous students to retake the exam

Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 13 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)
Sunday, March 27 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)
Sunday, April 10 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for May 1, 2022 (11:00 am) virtually. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://www.bus.umich.edu/Conferences/Project-Management-Certification-2022/Default.aspx

NOTE: The non-refundable fees

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

From the comfort of Down House in Kent, Darwin himself will explain the mechanism of natural selection to the audience, and support it by showing many beautiful examples in nature. The thrill of a scientific discovery, the adventure of science and the beauty of nature are central in this show.
The planetarium is operating at reduced capacity to maximize distancing between viewers and masks are required.

*The Wedding Day (Wesele),* by acclaimed director Wojciech Smarzowski, tackles the 1941 Jedwabne pogrom, during which Polish villagers tortured and murdered hundreds of Jewish neighbors. The story is set at a wedding celebration in a small town in northeastern Poland, and moves between past and present, with repressed memories of past violent events resurfacing in the present. In *The Wedding Day,* Smarzowski offers a stringent critique of current-day nationalism and the politics of denial in Poland.

For the past 40 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. Their distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans to Carnegie Hall. Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with “L’amour Ou La Folie” and then a second GRAMMY in 2010, “Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival”, BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades, including twelve GRAMMY nominations. They are regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show “A Prairie Home Companion,” where Keillor has dubbed them as “the best Cajun band in the world,” and their music is so integral to the Cajun culture that they have been featured on the New Orleans–based hit HBO program Treme.
