Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist, which inspired the work of the third artist, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings, Mystery Train, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.

The market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.

Cloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes, such as “linenette.”

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (March 2, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452695@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, March 2, 2019 11:00am

Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s, that question was hotly debated as artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.

Lead support for "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic
January 24, 2019 – March 2, 2019

Stamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing), Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing), and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants, caregivers, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity, critique power, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher, caretaker, woodshop cleaner-upper, lumber hauler, community organizer, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people, mundane routines, and a desire to build an inclusive society. Marisa Morán Jahn: the Mighty and the Mythic celebrates and acknowledges the daily struggles and minor victories of the 99 percent that make up the spirit of our society in the twenty-first century.

The Roman world was a colorful place. Although we often associate the Romans with white marble statues, these statues — as well as Roman homes, clothing, and art — were vibrant with color. This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world, how these colors were produced, where they were found, what the Romans thought about them, and how we study them today. We hope that visitors will think about what different colors mean to them, and how these meanings compare to the roles of colors in the ancient Roman world.

A lot of people know Matt Nathanson for his 2007 hit "Come On Get Higher," but his career has only kept growing since then. The year 2018 saw two albums from Matt, a collection of Def Leppard covers and the all-original "Sings His Sad Heart." He comes to The Ark with acoustic arrangements of the songs "Sings His Sad Heart," and it's not so common to hear him in a club The Ark's size. It's all to the good, because Matt has a unique sense of humor on stage that can get lost in larger venues.

This show is sold out. Songwriter Blu Sanders opens

Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear, molten glass, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (March 3, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452749@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, March 3, 2019 12:00pm

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s explores large-scale works of art by Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Nevelson, Sam Gilliam, and Al Loving, within the context of highly-charged debates of the early 1970s about aesthetics, politics, race, and feminism. This exhibition explores the gendered and racialized terms upon which great art was defined and assessed, and the strategy of artists to question the identity and aesthetics of the artist making the art. UMMA docents will help visitors look through the lens of the four artists’ works to explore the aesthetic choices inherent in abstraction as well as the acts of staining, pouring, draping, —or even taking apart the wall itself—within this charged political context.

UMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:

"So it's perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way." It's been a long time since Los Lobos have played Ann Arbor, and this is a rare concert opportunity indeed.

The mobility and displacement of the Black body, from port to holding cell, to ward and out, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain, otherness, power and triumph, "she was here, once" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.

In summer 2018, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement, sound, and solidarity, eight Black women and girls, wearing large needle felted wool masks, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).

The multi-layered piece has produced a short film, mini documentary, photography, and performance masks, on display in her solo exhibition, "she was here, once" in Lane Hall.

Lane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.

Accessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall, on each floor of the building. A gender neutral restroom is available on the first floor.

John was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. His family settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan after stays in both Japan and Iowa. After attending various universities around Michigan, John took an education hiatus to work in a cannery in Alaska. It was there that he found his calling in the pages of American Craft while scouring the tables of free magazines at the Anchorage Public Library. He received his BFA (Furniture Design) from Northern Michigan University in 1996 and his MFA (Furniture Design) from Rhode Island School of Design in 2000. John teaches in the School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University. John has recently exhibited work at the Muskegon Museum of Art, the Midland Center for the Arts, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum. He lives in Ann Arbor and maintains a studio in his home.

<<>><<>><<>> Householdments <<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
While I don’t literally remember my earliest childhood years in Japan where I was born, I have over my lifetime, stitched together memories based on home movies, family photos, and images from my imagination. I “remember” the aesthetics of the place - objects and environments carefully made in wood, stone, and steel. Without necessarily conscious of it at the time, I was dimly aware of Japanese visual composition. Things around me held an inherent logic and beauty, a perfection made possible by keen tools, quality materials, and proficient makers. This three-part integration was embedded early on and continues to affect my own ongoing pursuit in object making.

While finding my way as a young maker, I realized where I belonged mostly because of how various studios smelled. The ceramics studio was musty and dirty, the metals studio was acrid and smoky, but the wood studio had an earthy aroma. My kind of place. The tools immediately felt right as well. Chisels, planes, and knives when sharpened properly could manipulate the material in ways I never expected. While I was clearly not a natural talent, I quickly realized that a little bit of tenacity goes a long way. I also realized that I loved the logic for how wood parts can fit together. To build a wooden object or a piece of furniture each part depends on the fit of others. I deeply appreciate this fitting togetherness – how doors fit, how drawers fit, how joints fit, how hinges fit. It all makes sense, and this sensibility carries through to what I’m doing today.

Working in wood typically requires a high degree of planning before actual construction, and over time I realized I craved the ability to work with more spontaneity. The work in this show reflects my wish to keep the working process a bit more flexible and intuitive.

When starting with a sketch that I believe has potential, I now begin to build directly, without drawings or maquettes. I’ll constantly assess what has been built and allow myself to alter it, continue with it, or get rid of it and start over. I’m more interested in seeing where this process takes me than I am in finishing something precisely as planned. This results in some playfulness and whimsy that I hope is reflected in this work.

The word Householdments is an old and obscure term without modern usage that refers to furniture or things we keep in our houses. It strikes me as an odd word but well fitted to describe the objects in this exhibit. The pieces in this show are a collection of my personal householdments.

Abstract:
Our genome is decorated with diverse chemical modifications on proteins that package the DNA. These modifications constitute an essential layer of information (referred to as the epigenome) above the DNA sequence to regulate genome architecture and function. How the epigenome is decoded to impact a cell’s fate and behavior and how this process goes awry in human diseases remain poorly understood. Liling Wan, Ph.D., will discuss about her efforts in addressing these important questions and how we can translate the insights gained to therapeutic opportunities.

Speaker:
Liling Wan, Ph.D., graduated from Tsinghua University in China with a B.S. in biological sciences and biotechnology. She then went on to obtain Ph.D. degree from Princeton University, where she studied cancer biology, with a focus on cancer metastasis. Wan is now a postdoctoral fellow with David Allis, Ph.D., at Rockefeller University. During her postdoc, she studied how epigenetic information stored on chromatin is translated by chromatin reader proteins, and how this process impacts cell fate and cancer. Wan is recognized by numerous awards for her work, including a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellowship and a NIH K99 Pathway to Independent career award.

After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the live album "Disconnected in New York City," Los Lobos return with "Gates of Gold," their first studio album since 2010's "Tin Can Trust." "We're a Mexican American band, and no word describes America like immigrant," says Los Lobos wordsmith Louie Perez, describing the new release. "So it's perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way." It's been a long time since Los Lobos have played Ann Arbor, and this is a rare concert opportunity indeed.

Chadwick’s current series of paintings, Mystery Train, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

she was here, once (March 5, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/59501 59501-14875153@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 5, 2019 8:00am
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Center for Political Studies - Institute for Social Research

Dr. Fariss is excited to host a weekly Tuesday morning hackerspace from February 12 until April 23. Dr. Fariss uses computational methods and the statistical program R to study why governments around the world torture, maim, and kill individuals within their jurisdiction, and the processes monitors use to observe and document these abuses. Other research projects cover a broad array of themes but share a focus on computationally intensive methods, research design, and the analysis of data at a massive scale.

This weekly meeting with Dr. Fariss is for those with an interest in the R statistical programming language. Both beginners and experienced users are invited to attend. Dr. Fariss plans to introduce mostly introductory material during these sessions but will also cover Bayesian modeling in R and STAN.

The goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate, hackers need to bring their own laptops and, ideally, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (March 5, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452803@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 5, 2019 11:00am

Deciphering patterns in selective small molecule:RNA interactions (March 5, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/59464 59464-14745531@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 5, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Chemistry Dow Lab
Organized By: Department of Chemistry

While small molecules offer a unique opportunity to target structural and regulatory elements in therapeutically relevant RNAs, selectivity has been a recurrent challenge in small molecule:RNA recognition. In particular, RNAs tend to be more dynamic and offer less chemical functionality than proteins, and biologically active ligands must compete with the highly abundant and highly structured RNA of the ribosome. Indeed, no small molecule drugs targeting RNAs other than the ribosome are currently available, and our recent survey of the literature revealed little more than one hundred reported chemical probes that target non-ribosomal RNA in biological systems. As part of our efforts to improve small molecule targeting strategies and gain fundamental insights into small molecule:RNA recognition, we are analyzing patterns in both RNA-biased small molecule chemical space and RNA topological space privileged for differentiation. To begin, we identified physicochemical, structural, and spatial properties of biologically active RNA ligands that are distinct from those of protein-targeted ligands. Elaboration of four RNA binding scaffolds into a library enriched with these properties has led to improved recognition of medicinally relevant RNA targets, including viral and long noncoding RNA structures. At the same time, we used pattern recognition protocols to identify RNA topologies that can be differentially recognized by small molecules and have elaborated this technique to visualize conformational changes in RNA secondary structure. We are currently expanding these studies with the ultimate goal of applying these insights to the rapid development of ligands with high affinity and specificity for a wide range of RNA targets, particularly those critical to cancer progression.

Dr. Ware is a self-taught HPC user and excited to host a weekly hackerspace from February 13 to April 3, 2019. Her training has been in genetic epidemiology, public health, and statistics using SAS (local), R (server), Linux (on FLUX, MBNI, and other personal servers), batch scripting (SGE, PBS, Slurm). Dr. Ware has taught SAS (data management and statistical modeling) and introductory statistics using R. She is experienced in teaching high performance computing to individuals with limited programming background.

In this hackerspace, Dr. Ware is particularly interested in addressing issues of data manipulation in Linux, efficient documentation and file naming structures, data management (SAS/R), setting up an HPC connection, WinSCP, getting around a server using basic Linux, genomic analysis, and high-dimensional data analysis. Dr. Ware would like to learn about SFTP using Globus, Python, and more advanced batch scripting in Slurm. Dr. Ware hopes you will join her hackerspace this term.

The goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate, hackers need to bring their own laptops and, ideally, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

The internet has changed every aspect of contemporary life—from how we interact with each other to how we work and play. Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. This exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today, including Judith Barry, Juliana Huxtable, Pierre Huyghe, Josh Kline, Laura Owens, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Cindy Sherman, Frances Stark, and Martine Syms.

Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the exhibition at UMMA will be accompanied by a wide range of U-M partnerships and public programming.

EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF A MUSEUM AS A CULTURAL REPOSITORY

In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017, artist and distinguished U–M art professor Jim Cogswell was invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project, the artist adhered a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums' permanent collections.  The juxtaposed images address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge, memory, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.  Cosmogonic Tattoos is on view at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through May 2, 2018 and UMMA through June 2, 2019.

#CosmogonicTattoos

Lead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional support for the artist's project is provided by the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

Coordination chemistry approaches for developing 19F magnetic resonance biosensors (March 6, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53805 53805-13463692@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 6, 2019 4:00pm

19F Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an emerging technique for in vivo imaging, showing great promise due to the favorable NMR properties of the fluorine nucleus (high sensitivity, large ppm range) and the lack of detectable fluorine signal in biological systems. Imaging agents can be designed that exhibit either a turn-on or chemical shift response that is selective for a specific biological molecule or event. We are developing a series of metal complexes designed to report on different biological environments associated reductive stress (hypoxia), oxidative stress, changes in pH, metal ion concentration, and enzymatic activity. These sensors act via a switch from a paramagnetic to diamagnetic state upon reduction or oxidation at the metal center. Through careful tuning of the ligand scaffold, we have developed selective sensors for hypoxia and oxidative stress, showing promise for future applications for in vivo detection of these states in both cellular and animal disease models. New enhanced nanoparticle-based platforms based on metal-doped perfluorocarbons will also be discussed.

The Earls of Leicester are Barry Bales (bass), Shawn Camp (guitar), Charlie Cushman (banjo), Jerry Douglas (Dobro), Johnny Warren (fiddle), and Jeff White (mandolin). When the Earls of Leicester (leave out the same letters you'd leave out in "Worcester") formed in 2013, their mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut, the Nashville-based six-piece far surpassed their own expectations, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. They come to Michigan with a new live album that's further testimony to the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance

Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

EXAMINING THE RADICAL IMPACT OF INTERNET CULTURE ON VISUAL ART

Measurement of single-molecule reactions can elucidate microscopic mechanisms that are often hidden from ensemble analysis. This presentation report the acid-base titration of a single DNA duplex confined within the wild-type ?-hemolysin (?-HL) nanopore for up to 3 hours. Analysis of the pH-dependent kinetics of >100,000 base flipping events of a single GC base pair using a hidden Markov kinetic model demonstrates that protonation/deprotonation occurs while the base pair is in the intra-helical state. Our experiments correspond to the longest single-molecule chemical reaction kinetic measurements performed using a nanopore.

They call her Long Tall Marcia Ball, and she's one of a kind! Marcia Ball grew up in Vinton, Louisiana, in the heart of an area overflowing with blues, zydeco, and swamp rock. All the female members of her family played the piano. In 1970 Marcia and her first husband were heading for San Francisco, but their car broke down in Austin, and that's where she stayed. She put together a trio of talents: piano playing, songwriting, and vocals. In 1983 Marcia released her first solo album, "Soulful Dress," and ever since then she's been letting the good times roll at The Ark and other clubs around the country where a corps of devoted fans has watched her evolved into a true legend of the piano blues. Marcia has won nine Blues Music Awards, and she was recently inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame. Come check out music from Marcia's fabulous recent album "Shine Bright"!

After a dozen acclaimed albums, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth has released "Recorded Live in Lafayette," capturing the one-of-a-kind live Sonny experience. Sonny Landreth has collaborated with the very top names in guitar over the years: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Derek Trucks—the list goes on. The noted slideman cut his musical teeth in The Red Hot Louisiana Band of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, and he has since recorded and toured with artists ranging from John Mayall to John Hiatt. "Recorded Live in Lafayette" adds another major chapter to his tale, as new vocal and instrumental colors emerge
