Established in 1923 through the generosity of U-M Regent William L. Clements, the Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. It collects, preserves, and makes available primary sources about the Americas, with particular strengths in 18th and 19th century Americana. Drawing upon all four divisions of materials – books, manuscripts, maps and graphics – this display presents a small sampling of reproductions of the internationally significant holdings at the Clements and illustrates some topical strengths of the collections. Selections include handsome original artwork, compelling manuscripts, and printed resources with geographical connections spanning from the Caribbean to the Great Lakes.

Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music, spontaneously, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush, but also fingers, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops, playgrounds, houses and aerial views, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales, but rather to celebrate the color, shape, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving, crochet, needle felting, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years, she has collected, saved, garbage-rescued, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds, the vessels that hold them, and the totems that pay tribute to them, all keep her company, inspire her, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea, Michigan.

Write-Togethers will be running remotely every Monday on BlueJeans. The primary objective of the Write-Together—to provide a supportive community environment where you can make progress on larger writing projects—does not change in the move from in-person to remote. As we start redefining what our daily lives look like, having a virtual community in place to hold yourself accountable to your larger writing goals can be a potentially anchoring structure. If you are able to join us, we will look forward to touching base with you about your writing goals, and holding space for writing assistance as needed.
You can join the BlueJeans meeting by clicking on the link below, or dialing in by phone. This is set up to be a chat-only meeting, so that we don’t overtax the server, though we may enable cameras at later meetings if participants prefer it.

When there is effective communication, workplace relationships can thrive. At times, innovative solutions aren’t being implemented because we aren’t hearing each other out, literally. Studies show most people do not listen with the intent to understand but with the intent to reply. Building active listening skills can lead to more meaningful conversations and efficient results to workplace dilemmas. Join us to explore the importance of connecting with others and the common barriers that we face when trying to work together.

This Community Conversation explores the nature of conflict and opens dialogue regarding the strategies you use to manage conflict.

*Please note that we welcome and encourage participants to bring forth topics at these sessions. The format for each session allows for spontaneous conversation.

Deformable Object Manipulation: Learning While Doing (April 20, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74263 74263-18609325@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 20, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

This dissertation is motivated by two research questions: (1) How can robots perform a broad range of useful tasks with deformable objects without a time consuming modelling or data collection phase? and (2) How can robots take advantage of information learned while manipulating deformable objects?

To address the first question, I propose a framework for deformable object manipulation that interleaves planning and control, enabling complex manipulation tasks without relying on high-fidelity modeling or simulation. Each part of the framework uses a different representation of the deformable object that is well suited for the specific requirements of each component. The key idea behind these techniques is that we do not need to explicitly model and control every part of the deformable object, instead relying on the object's natural compliance in many situations.

For the second question, I consider the two major components of my framework and examine what can cause failure in each. The goal then is to learn from experience gathered while performing tasks in order to avoid making the same mistake again and again. To this end I formulate the controller's task as a Multi-Armed Bandit problem, enabling the controller to chose models based on the current circumstances. For the planner, I present a method to learn when we can rely on the robot's model of the deformable object, enabling the planner to avoid generating plans that are infeasible.

This framework is demonstrated in simulation with free floating grippers as well as on a 16 DoF physical robot, where reachability and dual-arm constraints make the tasks more difficult.

Dale's research interest include machine learning, controls, and motion planning. He is currently working on applying ideas from these fields to deformable object manipulation and related topics. In particular Dale is interested in algorithms that enable robots to perform tasks such as folding clothes, or making a bed, that are easy for humans to master, but are extremely challenging for robots. Dale graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with both college and university honors, and is also the recipient of the Frank J. Marshall Scholar Award.

Abstract: Nice Wanton is a Tudor moral interlude that would put even the most lurid public service announcement to shame: truant schoolchildren are destined for lives of crime and misery, sexually transmitted diseases are fatal markers of moral failing, and a great deal is blamed on lax parenting. The interlude's pedagogical message is recursive and explicit; the Prologue offers the play as a dramatization of the axiom “spare the rod, spoil the child,” a message repeated by several of the virtuous characters within the play. However, given the uncertain multiplicities of the play’s history, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly where, by whom, and for whom the zealous moralizing of Nice Wanton was performed. Instead, this paper focuses on Nice Wanton’s surprisingly robust afterlife in performance anthologies or series. Given time constraints, I am going to focus on the 1911 New Theatre production, which offered Nice Wanton as one performance in a multi-part series that introduced American audiences to the history of early English drama. This series also included the Chester play “Noah’s Flood,” and excerpts from The Winter’s Tale, The School for Scandal, and The Thunderbolt. In this paper, I attempt to trace the history of this performance of Nice Wanton and explore why this interlude resonated with an excerpted theatrical series with an eye towards audience pedagogy. More specifically, I argue that the central time-lapse structure of Nice Wanton, especially when put in dialogue with other excerpted plays, puts pressure on the work of excerpting, and ellipses as meaning-making. Ironically, the features of Nice Wanton that make it particularly attractive in performance anthologies or series— it’s length, it’s boisterous pedagogical simplicity—also create the conditions to make visible the narrative instability of the interlude.

On April 22, 2020, our world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event meant to bring people together from across the world in protest, solidarity, and conversation about how we can collectively fight for a sustainable and just world. In this Teach-Out, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT), an environmental student group from the University of Michigan, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.

50 years later, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors, disciplines, and lived experiences. You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts, climate change, environmental justice, and more, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

This year, we have 64 undergraduates representing a broad array of majors including Psychology; Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience (BCN); Public Health; and Neuroscience. Each poster represents a research project conducted by an undergraduate student alongside a Psychology Department faculty mentor! Many of these posters depict the outcomes of a year-long thesis project that is often the culmination of 3 or 4 years of laboratory work. On this website, visitors can listen to audio clips of the students describing their work, as well as ask questions. This virtual event will be available from 4/20-4/26.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (April 21, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207443@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 11:00am

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic, spiritual, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”

UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints, drawings, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists, their communities, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.

This exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom, theater, classroom, laboratory, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials, court transcript readings, and trial advocacy workshops, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists, or court reporters, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing, text, photography, and video.

Witness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

Children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) must undergo multiple surgical stages to reconstruct the anatomy to a sustainable single ventricle system. Stage I palliation, or the Norwood procedure, enables circulation to both pulmonary and systemic vasculature. The aorta is reconstructed and attached to the right ventricle and a fraction of systemic flow is redirected to the pulmonary arteries (PAs) through a systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt. Despite abundant hemodynamic data available 4-5 months after palliation, data is very scarce immediately following stage I. This data is critical in determining post-operative success. In this work, we combined population data and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to characterize hemodynamics immediately following stage I (post-stage I) and prior to stage II palliation (pre-stage II). A patient-specific model was constructed as a baseline geometry, which was then scaled to reflect population-based morphological data at both time-points. Population-based hemodynamic data was also used to calibrate each model to reproduce blood flow representative of HLHS patients.

The post-stage I simulation produced a mean PA pressure of 22 mmHg and high-frequency oscillations within the flow field indicating highly disturbed hemodynamics. Despite mean PA pressure dropping to 14 mmHg, the pre-stage II model also produced high-frequency flow components and PA wall shear stress increases. These suboptimal conditions result from the need to ensure adequate PA flow throughout the pre-stage II period, as the shunt becomes relatively smaller compared to the growing patient size. In the future, CFD can be used to optimize shunt design and minimize these suboptimal conditions.

We propose a novel optimization algorithm for radiofrequency (RF) pulse design in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), that regularizes the magnitude and phase of the target (desired) magnetization pattern separately. This approach may be useful across applications where the relative importance of achieving accurate magnitude or phase excitation varies; for example, saturation pulses "care" only about the magnitude excitation pattern. We apply our new design to the problem of spin "prephasing" in 3D functional MRI using blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast; spin prephasing pulses can mitigate the signal loss observed near air/tissue boundaries due to the presence of local susceptibility gradients. We show that our algorithm can improve the simulation performance and recover some signal in some regions with steep susceptibility gradients. In all cases, our algorithm shows better phase correction than a conventional design based on minimizing the complex difference between the target and realized patterns. The algorithm is open-source and the computation time is feasible for online applications. In addition, we evaluate the impact of the choice of (initial) excitation k-space trajectories, both in terms of trajectory type (SPINS vs extended KT points) and overall pulse duration.

Webinar: Restoring Native Oysters on North America's West Coast (April 21, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73838 73838-18339519@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 3:00pm

Conservation and restoration of coastal foundation species has become a global priority, to protect and enhance the habitats and services they provide. The oyster native to the west coast of North America between Baja California and British Columbia is Ostrea lurida, the Olympia oyster, a species quite unfamiliar to many people, even those that live in the region. Unlike oysters in other regions, this one is quite small, and does not form high profile reefs. Nevertheless, it is a vital part of bays and estuaries along the Pacific coast, providing food for humans and other species and enriching diversity. Recently, a community of practice has formed to rebuild populations of Olympia oysters to maintain their legacy for future generations.

The Native Olympia Oyster Collaborative (NOOC) was supported in the past year by funding from the National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s Science Collaborative. NOOC created a website (https://olympiaoysternet.ucdavis.edu) to serve as a portal for resources about native oyster science, restoration, and education. NOOC also compiled the first comprehensive archive of Olympia oyster restoration projects, creating an ARC GIS Story Map (https://projects.trnerr.org/oystermap/) to highlight them, and conducting a synthesis of approaches and lessons learned.

This webinar introduces the unique ecology of the Olympia oyster, the challenges it faces, and approaches taken to restoration. NOOC’s accomplishments to date will be highlighted, including the development of the web portal and story map. Finally, presenters will share lessons learned from the synthesis of twenty years of restoration projects conducted along over 2000 km of coast line. These lessons apply to restoration of any coastal foundation species anywhere: the importance of a structured decision-framework to match goals to approaches, the opportunities for community engagement, the need to consider ecosystem processes, and the value of a regional network for strategic planning.

Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of educational entertainment known to mankind. From the West African tradition of the Griot to modern day Moth events, storytelling environments have served as a means to pass along history, shape culture, share helpful lessons, and establish a sense of belonging and community.

The U-M Comprehensive Studies Program and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies invite you to explore themes related to campus life, coming of age, and learning and growing, at this series of Moth Style Storyteller Lounge events. Storytellers include students, faculty and staff, and Voices of Wisdom (alums or community members).

Value the Voice is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

What We Hold, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels (April 22, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73889 73889-18390391@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 22, 2020 8:00am
Location: Taubman Center
Organized By: Gifts of Art

New work by Abigial DeVille. Born in 1981 in New York, where she lives and works, DeVille has maintained a long-standing interest in marginalized people and places. She creates site-specific, immersive installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem.

The group explores indigenous hunter-gatherer societies in the 21st century, and how marginalized communities can drive solutions to the challenges they face. The identity of the Baka of Cameroon is deeply tied to the disappearing forest. Marginalized by society, they lack literacy and the language skills to defend their rights. Today, Baka children must “chase two rabbits at once”: learn survival in the forest, and receive formal schooling. The presenter recounts 10 years of firsthand experience working with Baka communities to bring both “rabbits” within children’s reach, and touches on child development, anthropology, and social justice. Photos, video, and everyday artifacts will be used. Ann Arbor native Sarah Strader (nee Tucker) got her B.A. from Georgetown University in 2011. In 2011-12 she had a Fullbright fellowship to live and research in remote Baka villages. In 2012 Chasing Two Rabbits was created and as a 2019 Echoing Green fellow, Sarah continues her work among the Baka to expand the reach of Two Rabbits.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (April 22, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207444@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 22, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, Candy and Michael Barasch, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of History of Art, School of Education, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, School of Social Work, and Gerald R.

Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

You are invited to the 2020 Bio./Neuro. Poster Session in which undergraduate students showcase the results of their theses and independent research projects.

Wednesday, April 22, 2020,
in the Undergraduate Science Building (USB) , 3:00-4:30 pm.

The event is always well-attended and a lot of fun (a chance to socialize with faculty and fellow majors).

All undergraduates, faculty, and staff are invited to stop by!

Interested in presenting?

To present in the poster session, a student must have a completed (or almost completed) an advisor-approved independent research project. Poster sessions are commonly held at scientific conferences; participating in April will allow students to gain valuable professional experience!
Students who wish to participate in the poster session are expected to design and (professionally) print out a poster that they will present to other students, faculty, and guests at the session.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students pursuing an honors degree to present their research in a public forum, but it is also open to anyone with an approved independent research project!

If you are a student interested in participating, please RSVP (by April 10).

Tinnitus is the disorder of phantom sound perception, while hyperacusis is abnormally increased loudness growth. Tinnitus and hyperacusis are both associated with hearing loss, but hearing loss does not always occur with either condition, implicating central neural activity as the basis for each disorder. Furthermore, while tinnitus and hyperacusis can co-occur, either can occur exclusively, suggesting that separate pathological neural processes underlie each disorder.

Mounting evidence suggests that pathological neural activity in the cochlear nucleus, the first central nucleus in the auditory pathway, underpins hyperacusis and tinnitus. The cochlear nucleus is comprised of a ventral and dorsal subdivision, which have separate principle output neurons with distinct targets. Previous studies have shown that dorsal cochlear nucleus fusiform cells show tinnitus-related increases in spontaneous firing with minimal alterations to sound-evoked responses. In contrast, sound-evoked activity in ventral cochlear nucleus bushy cells is enhanced following noise-overexposure, putatively underlying hyperacusis. While the fusiform-cell contribution to tinnitus has been well characterized with behavioral and electrophysiological studies, the bushy-cell contribution to tinnitus or hyperacusis has been understudied.

This dissertation examines how pathological neural activity in cochlear nucleus circuitry relates to tinnitus and hyperacusis in the following three chapters.

In the first chapter, I characterize the development of a high-throughput tinnitus behavioral model, which combines and optimizes existing paradigms. With this model, I show that animals administered salicylate, a drug that reliably induces tinnitus at high doses in both humans and animals, show behavioral evidence of tinnitus in two separate behavioral tests. Moreover, in these same animals, I show that dorsal-cochlear-nucleus fusiform cells exhibit frequency-specific increases in spontaneous firing activity, consistent with noise-induced tinnitus in animals.

In the second chapter, I show that following noise-overexposure, ventral-cochlear-nucleus bushy cells demonstrate hyperacusis-like neural firing patterns, but not tinnitus-specific increases in spontaneous activity. I contrast the bushy-cell neural activity with established fusiform-cell neural signatures of tinnitus, to highlight the bushy-cell, but not fusiform-cell contribution to hyperacusis. These analyses suggest that tinnitus and hyperacusis likely arise from distinct neural substrates.

In the third chapter, I use computational modelling of the auditory periphery and bushy-cell circuitry to examine potential mechanisms that underlie hyperacusis-like neural firing patterns demonstrated in the second chapter. I then relate enhanced bushy-cell firing patterns to alterations in the auditory brainstem response, a sound-evoked electrical potential generated primarily by bushy cells. Findings in this chapter suggest that there are multiple hyperacusis subtypes, arising from separate mechanisms, which could be diagnosed through fine-tuned alterations to the auditory brainstem response.

Abstract:
As a fundamental process for converting kinetic to thermal energy, collisionless shocks are ubiquitous throughout the heliosphere and astrophysical systems, from Earth’s magnetosphere to supernova remnants. While these shocks have been studied for decades by spacecraft, telescopes, and numerical simulations, there remain key open questions in shock physics, such as: How do shocks accelerate particles to extremely high energies? or How are particles heated across a shock? Laboratory experiments thus provide a significant opportunity to both complement spacecraft and remote sensing observations with well-controlled and well-diagnosed datasets, and to help benchmark numerical simulations that bridge laboratory and astrophysical systems.
In this talk, I will discuss recent results from experiments and simulations on the formation and evolution of collision-less shocks created through the interaction of a supersonic laser-driven magnetic piston and magnetized ambient plas-ma. Through advanced diagnostics a fast, high-Mach-number shock is observed. Direct probing of particle velocity distributions reveals the coupling between the piston and ambient plasmas that is a key step in forming magnetized collisionless shocks. Particle-in-cell simulations further detail the shock formation process, the role of collisionality, and the dynamics of multi-ion-species ambient plasmas. I will also discuss how this experimental platform complements spacecraft missions and can allow novel investigations of shock heating and particle acceleration.

In conjunction with Earth Day's 50th anniversary and its Artists for the Earth program, The Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor will be presenting a new choral drama at UMMA. Curated by Ben Cohen, Music for a Meanwhile Earth, interlaces actors, soloists and choral artists in a program that is both an existential exploration and a call to action.  Antaeus, the giant who draws strength when in contact with the earth, faces a crisis when Hercules lifts him off the ground on his way to his eleventh labor.  What do they say to each other in the bearhug? Music and texts from the Renaissance to contemporary surround and intersperse the story, including a world premiere by composer Evan Hause, a setting of Yeats' poem "The Two Trees".

This program is organized by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor and co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (April 23, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207445@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 23, 2020 11:00am

In April 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded and sent upwards of 50 million curies into the surrounding environment. Working through archives, Brown encountered many contradictory accounts of the disaster and its effects. Realizing that though people and archives lie, trees probably don’t. She turned to scientists—biologists, foresters, physicians and physicists—to help her understand the ecology of the greater Chernobyl territories and the health effects that ensured. She learned working in the swampy territory around the blown plant that radioactive contaminants saturated local eco-systems long before the Chernobyl accident and continued after the 1986 event. Brown argues that to call Chernobyl an “accident” is to sweep aside the continuum of radiation exposure that saturated environments in the northern hemisphere in the second half of the 20th century. Instead of a one-off accident, Brown argues that Chernobyl was a point of acceleration on a timeline of radioactive contamination that continues to this day.

Kate Brown is professor of history in the Department of Science, Technology and Society at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the author of the prize-winning histories *Plutopia: Nuclear Families in Atomic Cities and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters* (Oxford 2013) and *A Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland* (Harvard 2004). Brown was a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow. Her work has also been supported by the Carnegie Foundation, the NEH, ACLS, IREX, and the American Academy of Berlin, among others. Her latest book, *Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future*, will be published by Norton (US), Penguin Lane (UK), and Czarne (Poland) in spring 2019, and by Actes Sud (France) in October 2019.

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

We would love to hear from you! Send your comments or thoughts on the video and general well wishes for others to germandept@umich.edu and we'll post them on this website. You may also share with us via Facebook or Twitter. You have our very best wishes in your future endeavors!
