Michigan "chambergrass" from young players with diverse backgrounds

Westbound Situation is pushing the boundaries of chamber music forward. Four young, talented, acoustic musicians with instrumental prowess only surpassed by love of collaboration have brought their diverse musical backgrounds together to create an exciting result. With each member being one of the most highly regarded young players in genres ranging from roots, to classical and jazz, Westbound Situation fuses these musical influences into a unique original repertoire. Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprising Grant Flick on violin, Matt Davis on banjo, Zach Brown on cello, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. They come to The Ark tonight with new music.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (May 18, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818705@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 18, 2023 9:00am
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.

This exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of "feminism" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration.

“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.

Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit), open now through May 21st.

A public reception will be held on March 9th, 6:00–9:00 PM, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.

We hope you will be able to see the exhibit, and please be in touch if you have any questions.

Humanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book, the title page. Such pages signal and inform, incite pleasure and intrigue, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.

The exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library), Monday-Friday, 10am-4:30pm.

Featuring work by Gina Gibson, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.

Gina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new, the light and dark, and the known and unknown.

UN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

Location: William Clements Library
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

As we celebrate the library’s centennial, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.

It builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

Online Arabic placement test_May 18, 2023 (12pm-2:30pm) (May 18, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108047 108047-21818883@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 18, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Zoom
Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.
How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.
Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101, 201, 401, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester, and Arabic 102, 202, 402, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102, combined), Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer term.About the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic, if they have no background in Arabic, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes.
If you have questions regarding the placement test, please contact the program director at, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

Powder Bed Fusion Laser Beam Metals Additive Manufacturing: Process Monitoring Approaches for Qualification and Certification (May 18, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108142 108142-21818989@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 18, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Cooley Building
Organized By: Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences

Dr. Samuel Hocker is a Structural Materials Engineer in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. His current research is focused on the statistical process control of powder bed fusion laser beam metal (PBF-LB/M) additive manufacturing. He has led the development of a PBF-LB/M configurable architecture additive testbed, featuring synchronized in-situ process monitoring. His work is part of a larger effort in NASA to accelerate the qualification and certification of additively manufactured parts via computational materials tools and technologies.

The use of in-situ process monitoring is of interest to lower the cost of inspection for the qualification of powder bed fusion laser beam metal (PBF-LB/M) additively manufactured (AM) parts. Precise monitoring of the PBF-LB/M AM build process constitutes a multi-scale and multi-discipline task. There are several significant challenges to the in-situ approach: the synchronization of sensor signals to process steps; the physical interpretation and classification of sensor signals; managing very large datasets; and comparing the inputs with the observed monitoring signals. At NASA Langley Research Center, a configurable architecture additive testbed has been developed to monitor the build process with synchronized sensors. The philosophy and method adopted for the synchronization of the cameras with laser power and position throughout a complex PBF-LB/M AM build will be described. The synchronized in-situ monitoring signals are compared with ex-situ nondestructive inspection, x-ray computed tomography (XCT). Such comparisons permit a better understanding of how the sequential process actions of LPBF-AM can affect build quality.

The multi-scale and complex process of printing additively manufactured (AM) parts can have unexpected, but predictable, build conditions that result in material microstructure variability. This presentation will describe an additive manufacturing model-based process metric (AM-PM) computational method that is a fully parallel reduced order modeling approach developed to evaluate the evolution of AM processes. This method couples the known sequence of the AM process with a physically informed nearest neighbors’ calculation to map the conditions of a part-scale build. The result is a map of the build that is derived directly from build files or in-situ process monitoring sensors. The methodology of the approach will be described and mapped to the porosity observed from XCT for a complex PBF-LB/M build. Such comparative results develop understanding of how the sequential process actions can affect the PBF-LB/M AM build quality and microstructure variability.

New solo music from one half of The Indigo Girls

Amy Ray teamed up with Emily Saliers while in high school, and soon the duo became a staple in the Atlanta music scene. In 1981, their independent music career began with a basement recording called Tuesday's Children. One thing led to another, and The Indigo Girls signed with Epic Records in 1988. Despite almost polar-opposite styles, they met on the common ground of harmony and the love of meaningful music. Amy Ray brought fire and earth, Saliers the wind and water. Since the release of her 2001 album, "Stag," however, Amy has had an independent career that is different from, and complements, that of the parent duo. Amy has released ten albums, and she comes to The Ark with a new one, “If It All Goes South.”

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (May 19, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818706@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 19, 2023 9:00am

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (May 19, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803334@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, May 19, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

Carrie Newcomer weaves her life and her art together, with music, community activism, and personal concerns all playing a role. She's one of those people who exudes a spirituality that's all her own, and she has to be seen in concert to be truly appreciated. Says novelist Barbara Kingsolver: "She's a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace." And you can forget all that and just luxuriate in her incredibly rich alto voice! Carrie has traveled to India and performed as a U.S. cultural ambassador, and local religion journalist David Crumm, writing on the ReadTheSpirit website, named her to his list of "10 Spiritual Sages to Watch." Carrie comes to Michigan with a new album, "Until Now."

Renowned for her pure voice, deft guitar and violin work, and incantatory storytelling, Tracy has recorded and performed with Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter, headlined several of the nation's top folk festivals, including Philadelphia Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge, and enjoyed 12 consecutive years as one of folk radio's 50 top-played artists, both solo and with the late Dave Carter. Portraits of Feminism in Japan (May 22, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818709@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, May 22, 2023 9:00am

"Clearly his best is as good as ever"—Miami Herald

Al Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1945, and moved with his family to Bournemouth, a seaside town in the south of England, at an early age. A strong dose of Bob Dylan's original songs shifted his focus from instrumentalist to lyricist and vocalist. In 1965, Al moved to London and became the emcee at the famed Les Cousins folk club, rubbing shoulders with young talents like Paul Simon, Ralph McTell, Bert Jansch, and Cat Stevens. After several albums written in autobiographical mode, Al shifted his lyrical gaze outward, into history, literature and current events, an approach debuted on 1973's "Past, Present & Future." Al's next album exploded in America: "Year of the Cat," released in 1976, spawned two Top 20 hits (the title song and "On the Border"), and itself became a million-selling record. After Al relocated to California, where he still resides, his next album, 1978's "Time Passages," repeated the success of its predecessor, selling another million copies and spinning off the Top 10 title track and Top 30 single, "Song on the Radio." In the early 1990s, Al returned to his folk roots with "Famous Last Words," which utilized acoustic instrumentation and traditional folk and classical styles. He's never stopped creating completely original music—or being able to conjure other times and distant places with well-chosen words and evocative music.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (May 23, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818710@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, May 23, 2023 9:00am

Online Arabic placement test_May 23, 2023 (12pm-2:30pm) (May 23, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108219 108219-21819119@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, May 23, 2023 12:00pm

How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.

Join us at the virtual U360 Commencement and Capstone Competition on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, when three of our top U360 business sustainability interns from this school year (selected as finalists during a preliminary judging round) will present their Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) for one small business. A panel of judges will ask the students questions in defense of their action plans and then select a winner. The winner will be named Manomet’s “Next Generation Scholar” for 2023 and receive a scholarship award.

The U360 Capstone Competition is the culminationof Manomet’s U360 Business Sustainability internship, an experiential educational program for college students. Over the course of two semesters, each intern leads up to 25 small business owners through an assessment of their environmental, social, and governance practices. At the end of the U360 program, each student creates a comprehensive action plan for one business, learning how the business can make money, save money, and reduce risks through more sustainable operating practices. Three finalists then pitch their Sustainable Action Plans to a panel of judges.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (May 24, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818711@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, May 24, 2023 9:00am

Organized by Xiwen Gong, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering. This seminar is open to all, ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.

Abstract:
Electronic defects within the band gap of semiconductor materials play critical roles in determining the efficiency and stability of their photovoltaic devices. Eliminating deleterious defects in semiconductors or passivating them during the fabrication process of solar cells has become one of the most fundamental tasks for the solar cell society. This scenario is also prevailing in the metal halide perovskite solar cell community which has witnessed a rapid increase of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells from 3.8% to close to 26% with overwhelming reported progress on defect passivation strategies which also enhance the stability of perovskite solar cells. Any further improvement of the efficiency or stability of perovskite solar cells toward their Shockley-Queisser limitations have to rely on deeper understandings on the nature of defects in perovskite to squeeze out all non-radiative charge recombination paths by eliminating or passivating them.

Defects in perovskites have already been intensively studied in recent years, but there is still no consensus on the defect chemical nature, density, spatial distributions, and their evolution during degradation. In this talk, I will first present our demonstration that using the drive-level capacitance profiling (DLCP) technique to profile both the spatial and energetic distributions of charge traps in perovskite solar cells. Then I will report our progress in combining the DLCP technique with electrical poling to determine the charge states and eventually the chemical nature of mobile defects in perovskites. This study revealed some astonishing discoveries on the defects in perovskites of different compositions and mechanism of solar cell degradation under reverse bias and under illumination. If time allows, I will also present our progress in the development of efficient perovskite minimodules, including both single junctions, bifacial and tandem ones.

“When Duty Calls, Hang Up: The Ethics of Quitting for Clinicians” (May 24, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108231 108231-21819131@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, May 24, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

Abstract: The “Great Resignation” following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not spared the health sector. Resultant staffing shortages have compromised patient safety. The pandemic simultaneously reinvigorated discussions of the clinician’s “duty to care”, a unique ethical and legal responsibility that requires clinicians to place the needs of patients above their own interests. If a strong duty to care exists, then quitting cannot be ethical; however, this also renders clinicians infinitely exploitable by institutions and, to a lesser degree, by patients. This project evaluated the history and ethical underpinnings of the duty to care in the literature, finding general agreement about the existence of a duty to care, but debate over its ethical justification and the limits of the risks a clinician must incur in pursuit of fulfilling the duty. Subsequently, thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with clinicians who quit their jobs during the pandemic demonstrated that clinicians balance multiple competing duties with the duty to care, including duties to the self, family, colleagues, and health trainees. Being unable to effectively fulfill a perceived duty to patients because of institutional or other constraints also contributed to clinicians’ decision to quit. Additionally, participants expected basic safety measures and fair compensation in return for their service. These findings indicate that clinicians accept a general duty to care, but do not believe that it universally trumps other moral duties. Additionally, reported institutional constraints on good patient care and clinicians’ expectations of basic protections suggest that a corresponding institutional duty to care exists. Future scholarship should articulate the upper and lower bounds of the duty to care, expand the definition of “risk” to clinicians to encompass psychological well-being and burnout and evaluate how institutions and the public can reasonably provide clinicians with the tools necessary to effectively serve patients.

Motile cilia (or flagella, as they are sometimes known) are responsible for the movement of many unicellular organisms including algae and protozoan parasites, and in the human body, for the swimming of sperm cells and the movement of liquids, such as mucus and cerebrospinal fluid. Defective ciliary motility can lead to male infertility and a rare genetic disorder called primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), where impaired mucociliary clearance leads to progressive respiratory failure. Ciliary motility is generated by the axoneme, a molecular machine so large it occupies almost the entire volume of each cilium. Each axoneme consists of geometrically complex arrangement of microtubules, ATP-powered dynein motors, and their mechanoregulatory complexes. The size and complexity of the axoneme has long impeded an atomic model, hindering efforts to understand how all the components are integrated together to orchestrate the beating of a cilium. Here I will discuss how we have utilized recent advances in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled structure prediction (AlphaFold2) to determine the 96-nm modular repeats of axonemes from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii flagella and human respiratory cilia. Our atomic models provide insights into the conservation and specialization of axonemes, the interconnectivity between dyneins and their regulators, and the mechanisms that maintain axonemal periodicity and regulate motility. Cryo-EM structures of respiratory doublet microtubules from organoids derived from individuals with PCD reveal how the loss of individual docking factors can selectively eliminate periodically repeating structures and provide a roadmap for the future of personalized structural biology.
