Established in 1923 through the generosity of U-M Regent William L. Clements, the Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. It collects, preserves, and makes available primary sources about the Americas, with particular strengths in 18th and 19th century Americana. Drawing upon all four divisions of materials – books, manuscripts, maps and graphics – this display presents a small sampling of reproductions of the internationally significant holdings at the Clements and illustrates some topical strengths of the collections. Selections include handsome original artwork, compelling manuscripts, and printed resources with geographical connections spanning from the Caribbean to the Great Lakes.

Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music, spontaneously, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush, but also fingers, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops, playgrounds, houses and aerial views, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales, but rather to celebrate the color, shape, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving, crochet, needle felting, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

What We Hold, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels (June 6, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73889 73889-18779208@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 6, 2020 8:00am

Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years, she has collected, saved, garbage-rescued, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds, the vessels that hold them, and the totems that pay tribute to them, all keep her company, inspire her, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea, Michigan.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (June 6, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207483@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 6, 2020 11:00am

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters, chipped paint, and graffiti he found on city walls.

Doğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center, Paris (1982), the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (1992), and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.

Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex, tangled histories about the Great Lakes, its watershed, and the surrounding region.

Through the use of experimental photography, painting, sculpture, and textile work, these artists explore issues of water security, pollution, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together, their work highlights the complicated personal, political, and economic relationships between people, the water we depend on, the lands we call home, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.

These artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.

Watershed includes many new, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:
A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan; and, Detroit-based musician, artist, and activist Sacramento Knoxx, along with The Aadizookaan, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

What We Hold, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels (June 7, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73889 73889-18779209@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, June 7, 2020 8:00am

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (June 7, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207484@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, June 7, 2020 12:00pm

To call Peter Mulvey an acoustic singer-songwriter and guitarist just doesn't cover it. He's equally-and tremendously on all counts-gifted as a singer, writer, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: "Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear...utterly original...it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated...his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain." Peter grew up in Milwaukee, made his debut on the streets of Dublin, and moved to Boston, performing in subways and, finally, clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song "Take Down Your Flag," about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through, and I think that young man is right as rain," Peter says. "I'm doing my best." Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album, "There is Another World."

What We Hold, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels (June 9, 2020 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73889 73889-18779211@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 8:00am

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (June 9, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207485@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 11:00am

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay's Archive of Urban Protest (June 9, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72200 72200-17957222@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 11:00am

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Watershed (June 9, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73787 73787-18315761@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Misty Lyn - Ark Family Room Series (June 9, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74649 74649-18888928@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

As a contingent of the Michigan folk music scene for over a decade, Misty Lyn has penned haunting melodies over simple arrangements that traverse the gothic, literary fringes of American roots music. Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death, loss, heartache, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015, there has been a noticeable shift toward love, light, and hope in her music, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (June 10, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207486@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 11:00am

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

This event is free and available to the public. OLLI membership is not required.

The Great Lakes region has a strong restoration plan that has secured over $3.1 billion dollars in federal funds to clean up toxic pollution that poses a threat to people and wildlife, reduce polluted runoff that causes harmful algal blooms that poison drinking water, stop invasive species that harm fish and wildlife and outdoor recreation, and reverse habitat destruction that harm the environment and hurt the economy.

Federal investments are producing results in communities across an eight-state region. But serious threats remain, and the Healing Our Waters—Great Lakes Coalition is continuing to advocate for solutions that protect our drinking water, jobs, and way of life.

Speaker Laura Rubin has spent more than 30 years working on environmental protection, policy, and conservation issues. She is currently the Director of the Healing Our Waters—Great Lakes Coalition, which has been harnessing the collective power of more than 160 groups representing millions of people, whose common goal is to restore and protect the Great Lakes. The Coalition has earned a well-deserved reputation as a national leader in securing federal investment in regional ecosystem restoration efforts.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (June 11, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207487@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 11, 2020 11:00am

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are the most prominent group of optically active van-der-Waals materials and show promising properties such as the potential for high carrier mobility, atomic thickness, and ultrafast charge transfer. The implications of fast charge and energy transfer for optoelectronic, energy-, and light-harvesting applications has made this group of materials one of the most well-studied ones over the past years. However, previous work employed techniques not uniquely suited to study the processes in these materials, especially with respect to the temporal resolution, yielding only insufficient information about the physics of the system.

In this talk, I will give an overview about the technique called multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) that we employ to study the charge and energy transfer in a MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructure. Using this technique, we are able to infer information about the dominance of charge transfer on a sub-picosecond time-scale in these samples, the underlying time-scales of other processes occurring in the material such as fast decay into dark states, and the high spatial inhomogeneity of these dynamics. We are also able to clearly distinguish between energy and charge transfer dynamics. I will explain how our implementation of MDCS can be combined with existing imaging techniques and how we plan to use this in the future to advance the study of these promising materials for electronic applications.

Founder of IF Management, Author & Speaker, Steven Herz

“When all else is equal—education, work ethic, intelligence, experience, ambition—the single biggest factor in winning business, promotions, friendships, or followers hinges on our ability to communicate and connect,” says LSA alum Steven Herz.

Stolen Silver is the musical culmination of a decade-long friendship between songwriters Levi Britton and Dan Myers. It's a union that dates back to their days as roommates in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, one that entails a history as previous touring bandmates, collaborators and, most importantly, singers. Their voices are instruments, seemingly effortless and vital to their mutual craft. on the stage, where ideas are fresh and nothing is left unattempted. Their styles swerve along a spectrum that spans from indie folk to Americana, from pop-rock to more explorative soundtrack moments where the spaces in the songs are equally important to their narrative, undoubtedly due to Myers’ work as a film composer. Praise and momentum for this band continue to build. Their hard work has delivered headlining bills at LA's Hotel Cafe and Chicago's renowned venues Hideout, Empty Bottle, Ravinia and Schuba's. Stolen Silver comes to Michigan with a new EP, "Sanctuary Sessions," recorded and filmed live in a 200-year-old gothic cathedral in central Wisconsin.

John McCutcheon's art grew out of his absolute mastery of American traditional music and instruments. He's a legend of the guitar, the hammered dulcimer, and several other instruments, and he's a prolific songwriter. The result is a body of classic American song, rooted in the best our musical tradition has to offer. John McCutcheon is a voice for peace, a community organizer, a writer, a literacy campaigner, and a performer who has packed concert halls on four continents. The Washington Post calls John's concerts "little feats of magic," and as a storyteller he's been compared with Garrison Keillor-and, even better than that, Will Rogers.
