SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life
DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works\, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience\, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke\, Dartmouth College Class of 1944\, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund\, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. UMMA's installation is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Arts at Michigan\, and the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Robert Wilson: Video 50
DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Money Makes the World Go Around: An Ancient Empress as Popular Icon of Japanese Modernity
DESCRIPTION:This paper investigates the modern reinterpretation of the Japanese pre-historic Empress Jingu through the lens of banknote designs. \nSince an eighth-century historical account\, Jingu was represented in hagiographic as well as vernacular narratives\, paintings and sculptures. She was interpreted as a goddess\, mother of the martial deity Hachiman\, and as the alleged conqueror of the Korean kingdoms. These features turned her into the archetype of Japanese colonial aspirations. To choose Empress Jingu as a motif for the new and ubiquitous medium of paper money during the formative years of the Japanese nation-state was therefore a highly political and ideological decision. \n\nThe Japanese finance ministry ordered three different renderings of the empress to be designed between 1873 and 1881. However\, none of her pre-modern characteristics appear overtly in any of the late nineteenth-century official\, visual interpretations. Why would this be the case? What are the reasons for the shift from a narrative representation to an unfamiliar allegory\, and finally to a bust portrait reminiscent of European regents? How could her Western-style image on the bills evoke her multi-faceted persona in the Japanese consumers? \n\nThe radically modern renderings of Empress Jingu\, and the debates surrounding their creation reveal negotiations of historical\, political\, and aesthetic boundaries between ancient and modern\; ideological notions and realpolitik\; Japan and its mainland neighbours\; art and everyday media\; and the balancing of Japanese versus Western modes of visual representation.\n

DESCRIPTION:Moving Beyond Green Building: Exploring the Socioeconomic Impacts of Green Building and Interdisciplinary Collaboration. \n\nThis symposium will bring together diverse stakeholders to discuss many of the unspoken benefits of green buildings\, as well as how increased collaboration between these parties can lead to widespread change in buildings. Through this symposium we hope to communicate how green buildings can better serve as a driver of change for human health and productivity\, behavioral change\, social justice\, and affordability for the middle class. \n\nDean Marie Lynn Miranda of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment and Andrew Hoffman\, Director of the Erb Institute will be among the speakers at the symposium. \n\nThe symposium will also feature discussion from active professionals in the green industry who will talk about the societal impacts of green building as it relates to community development\, culture\, affordability\, and education. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life
DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works\, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience\, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke\, Dartmouth College Class of 1944\, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

DESCRIPTION:Justin Roberts has become an Ark family favorite! Justin and his band\, the Not Ready for Naptime Players\, dish out intelligent and whimsically rocking music for kids and their parents. Roberts started out in the Minneapolis indie rock band Pimentos for Gus\, which inspired a devoted but small following. So Roberts decided to moonlight (during the day) as a Montessori preschool teacher. Soon he began writing songs for a new generation of fans: his students. He was soon being compared to everyone from Elvis Costello to Fountains of Wayne and Nick Lowe. It was clear that Justin had figured out the elusive trick of appealing to both kids and adults. Kiddie mosh pits broke out\, word spread\, and shows started selling out -- at renowned venues like New York's Symphony Space and even Lollapalooza. Justin's \"Meltdown\" CD was named by Time Out NY Kids to its list of the best children's music of the last 30 years\, and his latest album\, \"Jungle Gym\,\" was a Grammy award nominee.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life
DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works\, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience\, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke\, Dartmouth College Class of 1944\, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund\, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

DESCRIPTION:This is Not a Film is a day-in-the-life documentary of Jafar Panahi’s experience of being under house arrest\, filmed almost entirely inside his apartment in Tehran\, as he creatively expresses his frustration of not being allowed to do what comes so naturally to this passionate writer and filmmaker: make films. Jafar Panahi\, the Iranian writer/director of internationally acclaimed films such as The White Balloon\, The Circle\, and Offside\, is under house arrest and a twenty year ban on making films\, leaving Iran\, and talking to the media. This is Not a Film is a courageous effort by Panahi and his co-director Motjaba Mirtahmasb to fight against censorship and for the human rights of not only his colleagues in the Iranian film industry\, but of filmmakers everywhere. \n\nThis is Not a Film was smuggled from Iran to France on a USB drive inside a cake\, and supported by the international film community including filmmakers of the highest profile. Panahi and Mirtahmasb’s film will be shown to audiences around the world despite efforts in the filmmakers’ homeland to censor their voices.\n\nMarch 27 through April 1\, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Ann Arbor Film Festival\, the longest running independent and experimental film festival in North America. The festival will present over 40 programs with close to 200 films over the six-day event.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life
DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works\, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience\, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke\, Dartmouth College Class of 1944\, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund\, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

DESCRIPTION:Some international students\, scholars\, faculty\, or staff may need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for themselves or for their spouses and children in order to fill out required tax forms. At this workshop\, a representative from the U-M Payroll Office will help you fill out or complete the ITIN application form. A notary public will be available to assist with certification of copies of your documents\, so that you can leave the workshop with a completed ITIN application which you can mail to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with your tax form.\n\nCo-sponsored by the U-M Payroll Office and the International Center.\n\nNOTE: If you are a currently enrolled student and do not have any questions about the ITIN application form\, you can take your ITIN form\, your original documents\, and your document copies to Student Legal Services (2nd floor\, Michigan Union) instead of attending the workshop. Student Legal Services will certify your document copies and you can then mail your ITIN form and attached document copies to the Internal Revenue Service with your tax form.\n\nWho should attend:\n\n    Before attending the workshop\, decide if you need an ITIN. You do not need an ITIN if you already have a Social Security Number.\n    If you already have an ITIN\, you do not need to attend the workshop.\n    If you use CINTAX to prepare your U.S. tax return form and need an ITIN\, CINTAX will fill out and print Form W-7 (the ITIN application) for you when it prints your tax forms.\n    Getting an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) also has information to help you decide if you need an ITIN.\n    During the first hour of the workshop\, presenters from U-M Payroll Office will answer questions about the W-7 form. DESCRIPTION:In the once thriving city of Detroit\, residents now struggle to find fresh produce. The Catherine Ferguson Academy for Young Women in Detroit is one of only three schools in the U.S. that educates pregnant teens and young mothers about the importance of nutrition and helps them develop skills making them independent and able to support their families.  Though students initially dislike the agricultural work included in the charter school’s curriculum\, their attitudes change when crops begin to bear fruit\, and they see their hard work has transform into profitable food sales. Mascha and Manfred Poppenk\, the creators of the award-winning documentary\, “Grown in Detroit\,” and a panel of U-M faculty will discuss\, and show clips from\,  their award winning film – “Grown in Detroit ” about the amazing work done at the Catherine Ferguson Academy.   The film has won dozens of awards since its debut in 2010. DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

DESCRIPTION:Humanity has created enough highly enriched uranium (HEU) and separated plutonium to produce well over 100\,000 nuclear explosives. Most of this material is a legacy of the U.S.-Soviet Cold War nuclear arms race but separation of about half of the plutonium was initiated to provide start-up fuel for plutonium breeder reactors that were never built.\n\nToday\, excess Cold War HEU is being blended down to low-enriched uranium (LEU) for use in power reactor fuel and some of it is being placed in reserves for future use as naval-reactor fuel.  Excess separated plutonium is also mostly being disposed of in power reactor fuel.\n\nA small part of the HEU -- but still hundreds of weapon equivalents -- was spread to more than 40 nations in reactor fuel for research reactors that the U.S. and Soviet Union supplied during the 1950s and 60s under their Atoms for Peace Programs.  Today\, a major effort is focused on converting those of these research reactors that are still operating to LEU and retrieving the fresh and spent HEU fuel. As France has demonstrated\, naval reactors also could be converted to LEU fuel.

DESCRIPTION:The son of 1970s icon Jim Croce\, Adrian James Croce suffered another tragedy in childhood: he went completely blind at age four. As he gradually regained partial sight in one eye\, he began to play the piano\, emulating records by Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. He grew into a musician who was anything but a Jim Croce clone\, taking off from classic piano blues and growing into a unique keyboard-playing songwriter\, with a preference for vintage instruments and a way of making a lot out of a very minimal song. A lot of musicians call themselves eclectic\, but few can claim this: each of A.J.'s first five album releases hit the charts in a different genre (jazz\, Americana\, blues\, AAA\, college\, and top 40\, if you're keeping score). A.J. Croce has grown as a musician with each new album\, and he's very much a famous name with music that's all his own.

DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Robert Wilson: Video 50
DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

DESCRIPTION:Greggor Mattson\, Assistant Professor of Sociology\, Oberlin College\; OKUM Visiting Scholar\, University of Michigan. \n\nEU conflict over prostitution occurred during a time of unprecedented consensus–dropping internal borders\, a new currency\, drafting a Constitution\, incorporating 15 new members\, and plans to harmonize immigration and justice systems. Between 1998 and 2004\, eleven parliaments in the European Union (EU) debated whether to regulate prostitution at the national level\, imposing a single definition over something that had\, until then\, been regulated by cities. The Netherlands and Germany legalized prostitution\, recognizing “sex work” and imposing workplace standards. Sweden and Finland\, on the other hand\, abolished prostitution from the public sphere and\, in Sweden’s case\, criminalized the purchase of sex. Though these policies are sharply at odds\, both regimes rationalized prostitution by imposing a single national definition that overrode the old systems of community discretion.\n\nGreggor Mattson is an assistant professor of sociology and law and society at Oberlin College where his research investigates the public regulation of private behavior. This talk is excerpted from his book manuscript interpreting recent European conflicts over prostitution regulation\, research that was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and a Fulbright Scholarship to the European Union. He holds degrees in sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, Oxford University and the George Washington University. \n

DESCRIPTION:The need to document and to understand the mechanisms producing biodiversity patterns is becoming increasingly urgent because biodiversity is being lost at unprecedented rates due to global anthropogenic changes. Dr. McCain argues that elevational gradients hold enormous potential for understanding patterns and mechanisms of biodiversity. Mountains around the world in all types of climates are hotspots of biodiversity\, including many rare\, endangered\, and endemic species. Using this replication on mountains and the variability in the important factors thought to be linked to biodiversity serve as a potential natural experiment that may aid in our search for a general explanation of biodiversity. Additionally\, these montane replicates have enormous potential to understand historical and current effects of climate change on species distributions. In the past 100 years\, researchers have conducted many montane mammal studies\, and improved our GIS and analytical capabilities that we can now study global montane patterns. Using examples of field studies\, meta-analyses\, and climate change models\, McCain will explore how montane distributions of vertebrates can be used to assess the relative strength of various factors thought to underlie biodiversity patterns\, including climate\, space\, evolutionary history\, and species interactions. And she will illustrate ways montane mammal distributions can be used to understand future global change effects in the five regions of the globe\, including North American\, Latin America\, Africa\, Europe\, Mainland Asia and Austral-Asia.\n\nLecture sponsored by the Theodore H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Matthew Crocker: The Interplay of Language and Gaze in Virtual Environments
DESCRIPTION:When dialog pertains to the objects and events in the world around us\, gaze and speech become closely intertwined: Speakers typically look at objects about 1 second before they mention them\, while listeners fixate relevant objects within 250mseconds of hearing them mentioned. In face-to-face dialog\, listeners can “short-cut” this process by following the speaker’s gaze directly to get cues about which objects he/she is planning to mention.\n\nThus gaze serves as a useful visual cue for grounding and disambiguating linguistic interaction. This talk will discuss recent research which seeks to better understand the importance of gaze for situated dialog in human-computer interaction. The first part of the talk will focus on how eye gaze of both robots and virtual agents influences the way people understand their speech. Then we will discuss ongoing research which exploits the real-time gaze of human users in order to improve the automatic generation of spoken directions\, as users seek to navigate their way through a virtual environment. The talk will conclude by summarizing the importance of eye-gaze as a real-time channel for situated interaction\, and speculate on how increasingly ubiquitous gaze-tracking technologies could be exploited in future applications.

DESCRIPTION:	\nSince 1980\, arwulf arf has hosted Face the Music every Thursday at 7pm\, a show which has set the benchmark for experimental and experiential radio at WCBN and in the freeform community. DESCRIPTION:The ONE Campaign at the University of Michigan is proud to present the ONE Night Stand: Thirsty Thursday awareness concert in honor of World Water Day. Students\, faculty\, and residents are invited to spend one rewarding night learning about global access to clean water while enjoying vibrant performances by local singing groups and dance crews. While the atmosphere of the concert is both fun and entertaining\, it also provides the chance to address a serious issue. There are currently 884 million people without access to clean water globally\, a number that demands both our attention and involvement. After the concert\, audience members will have the unique opportunity to take a stand immediately by participating in a variety of advocacy actions to help individuals in need. The concert is free to the public\; all we ask is for your help in making our voices heard.\n\nThe ONE Campaign is an international grassroots advocacy organization that mobilizes individuals to join the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease.
