SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life
DESCRIPTION:Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose\, international network of artists\, composers\, and designers-\"led\" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas\, Nam June Paik\, George Brecht\, and Yoko Ono\, among many others\, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming\, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that \"anything can be art and anyone can do it.\" Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media\, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas\, absurdist send-ups of consumer products\, and invitations to direct\, playful participation by the viewer\, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works\, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience\, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke\, Dartmouth College Class of 1944\, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund\, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. UMMA's installation is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Arts at Michigan\, and the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Robert Wilson: Video 50
DESCRIPTION:The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery\, the absence of a linear narrative\, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories\, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second \"episodes\,\" a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger\, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater\, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish\, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conversations on Europe
DESCRIPTION:Greggor Mattson\, Assistant Professor of Sociology\, Oberlin College\; OKUM Visiting Scholar\, University of Michigan. \n\nEU conflict over prostitution occurred during a time of unprecedented consensus–dropping internal borders\, a new currency\, drafting a Constitution\, incorporating 15 new members\, and plans to harmonize immigration and justice systems. Between 1998 and 2004\, eleven parliaments in the European Union (EU) debated whether to regulate prostitution at the national level\, imposing a single definition over something that had\, until then\, been regulated by cities. The Netherlands and Germany legalized prostitution\, recognizing “sex work” and imposing workplace standards. Sweden and Finland\, on the other hand\, abolished prostitution from the public sphere and\, in Sweden’s case\, criminalized the purchase of sex. Though these policies are sharply at odds\, both regimes rationalized prostitution by imposing a single national definition that overrode the old systems of community discretion.\n\nGreggor Mattson is an assistant professor of sociology and law and society at Oberlin College where his research investigates the public regulation of private behavior. This talk is excerpted from his book manuscript interpreting recent European conflicts over prostitution regulation\, research that was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and a Fulbright Scholarship to the European Union. He holds degrees in sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, Oxford University and the George Washington University. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The need to document and to understand the mechanisms producing biodiversity patterns is becoming increasingly urgent because biodiversity is being lost at unprecedented rates due to global anthropogenic changes. Dr. McCain argues that elevational gradients hold enormous potential for understanding patterns and mechanisms of biodiversity. Mountains around the world in all types of climates are hotspots of biodiversity\, including many rare\, endangered\, and endemic species. Using this replication on mountains and the variability in the important factors thought to be linked to biodiversity serve as a potential natural experiment that may aid in our search for a general explanation of biodiversity. Additionally\, these montane replicates have enormous potential to understand historical and current effects of climate change on species distributions. In the past 100 years\, researchers have conducted many montane mammal studies\, and improved our GIS and analytical capabilities that we can now study global montane patterns. Using examples of field studies\, meta-analyses\, and climate change models\, McCain will explore how montane distributions of vertebrates can be used to assess the relative strength of various factors thought to underlie biodiversity patterns\, including climate\, space\, evolutionary history\, and species interactions. And she will illustrate ways montane mammal distributions can be used to understand future global change effects in the five regions of the globe\, including North American\, Latin America\, Africa\, Europe\, Mainland Asia and Austral-Asia.\n\nLecture sponsored by the Theodore H. Hubbell fund

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:I Can't Sleep!
DESCRIPTION:Can't sleep? It's not just you. Sleep problems are common among college students yet often not well understood. For example\, most people think that what they do during the day has nothing to do with how well they sleep at night -- it does! This workshop is designed to help students understand the causes of their sleep problems and learn strategies for overcoming them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Matthew Crocker: The Interplay of Language and Gaze in Virtual Environments
DESCRIPTION:When dialog pertains to the objects and events in the world around us\, gaze and speech become closely intertwined: Speakers typically look at objects about 1 second before they mention them\, while listeners fixate relevant objects within 250mseconds of hearing them mentioned. In face-to-face dialog\, listeners can “short-cut” this process by following the speaker’s gaze directly to get cues about which objects he/she is planning to mention.\n\nThus gaze serves as a useful visual cue for grounding and disambiguating linguistic interaction. This talk will discuss recent research which seeks to better understand the importance of gaze for situated dialog in human-computer interaction. The first part of the talk will focus on how eye gaze of both robots and virtual agents influences the way people understand their speech. Then we will discuss ongoing research which exploits the real-time gaze of human users in order to improve the automatic generation of spoken directions\, as users seek to navigate their way through a virtual environment. The talk will conclude by summarizing the importance of eye-gaze as a real-time channel for situated interaction\, and speculate on how increasingly ubiquitous gaze-tracking technologies could be exploited in future applications.

SUMMARY:Performance:Michigan Sahana presents Swaranjali
DESCRIPTION:Swaranjali is a free Indian classical music and dance concert presenting many different styles and types of art forms - including\, but not limited to\, nine different types of classical East Indian dance and South Asian (Pakistani\, Persian\, and Indian) vocal and instrumental music. The event showcases an amalgamation of cultural arts and is sure to broaden the global knowledge of the audience. It brings together various communities based solely on each community's passion for the arts - putting aside extraneous barriers. This event will expose audience members to unique forms of art - in fact\, more than just being a night of entertainment\, the event is an enriching experience. The pieces presented cover a broad range - from the purely classical dance forms of Bharatanatyam from South India and Odissi from North India to the fusion of Persian\, Pakistani\, Indian\, and Western vocal and instrumental musical compositions.\n \nMichigan Sahana seeks to both spread awareness of a unique culture of art styles as well as have a positive impact on the lives of students by broadening their knowledge and perspectives about global culture. Additionally\, it has been scientifically researched and proven that music and the arts can enhance and develop brain function - this is known as the Mozart Effect. A night of culturally-influenced classical arts will have a positive effect on many other aspects of students' lives and learning experiences.\n\nThis event is cosponsored by UMMA's Student Programming and Advisory Council.

In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life\, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:2011-2012 Fellows Lecture and Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan offers three fellowships in the areas of architectural research and instruction. Each of the fellowships includes teaching related to the candidate's area of interest\, resources for the development of work\, possibilities to interface with scholars and researchers in the wider university context\, and the opportunity to share the outcome of the fellowship with the College. Fellows spend one year in residence and teach three classes in addition to pursuing their fellowship interests.\n\nWilliam Muschenheim Fellowship: James Macgillivray\nFilm to Wit: A Menagerie\n\nThe slow death of the medium of film calls for a drawn-out moment of reflection. What was film? By the same token\, what were its constituent spaces?\n\nThe generalist might see “filmic space” as the fruits of the kinship of Eisenstein and Le Corbusier\, both of them walking in parallax around the precincts of the Acropolis. Le Corbusier moves with the smoothness of the architectural promenade\, Eisenstein sees collision in the succession of architectural images. Other figures exist in the pantheon of film\, but must be drawn out.\n\nThis work does not generalize but lays out a handful of these examples as in a cabinet of curiosities. Spheres\, pyramids\, tapestries\, lattices and prisms among others\, all are latent in what is now the “last machine\,” the film.\n\nWalter B. Sanders Fellow: Etienne Turpin\nStainlessness\n\nStainlessness recuperates the tradition of the architectural ”˜capriccio’ as a means to emphasize the history of labor movements in North America and to make legible the physical semblance of these movements in cities including Sudbury\, Chicago\, Pittsburgh\, and Detroit. While processes of urbanization have all but erased these struggles from our cities and left only ambivalent monuments to mark the past\, the narrative of Stainlessness and its contemporary ”˜capriccios’ assert the centrality of labor as a force capable of transforming the nature of cities\, the culture of America\, and the geologic deep-time marked by the Anthropocene.\n\nWillard A. Oberdick Fellow: Kyle Reynolds\nSymptomatic: Indexical Techniques for a Revitalized Cincinnati\n\nStemming from an interest in the way in which architecture presents itself to the public\, this project investigates a renewed potential of indexical techniques of design at three scales: the city\, the building\, and the detail. Previous uses of the index have focused on its ability to trace processes or historical contexts but almost exclusively produced work that looked backward and referred to existing conditions. Symptomatic posits that indexical techniques can be projective in their deployment. They can collapse time and space between a sign and its referent and in many cases can reverse that order entirely. The symptomatic index is not a return to a legibility of sign nor is it advocating for an autonomous formal agenda. Its potential is in its ability to produce new atmospheres and alter stagnant contexts with techniques that range from extensive ephemeral figuration to intensive building construction.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Institute for the Humanities Brown Bag
DESCRIPTION:In this talk author Imraan Coovadia looks at a type of butterfly Nabokov was particularly interested in\, the Kallima genus\, and shows that it belonged to a class of “puzzle pictures” which were central to German gestalt psychology during Nabokov’s Berlin period. Coovadia argues that Lolita itself\, with the switching perspectives it imposes on the reader and critic alike\, can be seen as a kind of “puzzle picture\,” and that understanding the novel in this way helps resolve a series of critical disputes about the narrative and Nabokovian style\, about the morality and immorality of reading\, and about the mechanism by which fiction engages our feelings. Coovadia suggests that\, along with Great Expectations\, Lolita is the book which most radically investigates the forces of wish fulfillment and projected desire that bring a reader into the text.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The More Things Change...The Labadie Collection's 100th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:View selected items from the world’s foremost archive of international radical social protest movements. \"Social protest movements often involve intense passion\, so expect to see some edgy and offensive items on display\,\" says Labadie Collection curator Julie Herrada.\n\nThe Labadie Collection is the world’s largest publicly accessible research collection covering just about every 19th\, 20th\, and 21st century protest movement that can be documented on paper\, from the French Revolution to Occupy Wall Street. It has served as a resource for thousands of people the world over\, from high school students to seasoned researchers\, from young activists in search of their roots to documentary filmmakers unearthing eye-catching images. Books\, serials\, manuscripts\, pamphlets\, photographs\, audio recordings\, posters\, and political buttons are all part of this eclectic group of materials.\n\nView the exhibit during Audubon Room hours: Mon-Thurs 8:30am-7pm\, Fri 8:30am-6pm\, Sat 10am-6pm\, Sun 1pm-7pm
