SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents A Study in Nature: Gelatin Silver Prints by Darryl Baird
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Connections: Linoleum Block Prints by Elizabeth Busey
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

DESCRIPTION:By day\, Jean-Marc Fontaine is a molecular biologist\, and by night and weekend\, he is an artist. He spent his childhood and youth in Normandy\, France\, and his dream of becoming a scientist grew together with his imagination and passion for oil painting and drawing. After moving to the US in 1998\, Fontaine became fascinated with sculpting. This self-taught artist explores funny and familiar subjects\, with close attention to details in human anatomy. Viewers will meet French\, Belgian\, British and American characters. Fontaine hopes that “”¦these cartoon characters will bring a smile to patients (children and adults\, alike).”

DESCRIPTION:Traditional kunqu\, a genre of classical Chinese theatre\, comes alive in the large scale photographs of Xu\, Zengquan. The viewer experiences the personalities of the characters and the spirit of the dance\, opening a window into traditional Chinese culture and history. Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. His work has been published by the Smithsonian Institution. Gifts of Art is pleased to present this exhibition in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Valerie Mann has been showing her work professionally throughout the US and in Canada and Germany for 23 years.  She grew up on a large family farm in Indiana\, went to University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana to earn a BFA in painting\, then to MSU to earn an MFA in sculpture. Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Translating Homer: from Papyri to Alexander Pope\" includes papyri and early printed books illustrating how the Iliad and the Odyssey\, two epic poems originally composed in the oral tradition\, were first written down\, edited\, and eventually translated into the main European languages. This journey of transmission and interpretation throughout the centuries ends with the first editions of Alexander Pope’s renderings of the poems.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will hear a series of readings from the poems in the original Greek and in several other languages\, including Latin\, English\, Dutch\, and Spanish.\n\nThe exhibit is part of the LSA Fall 2012 theme semester\, Translation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) – established almost 50 years ago – represents a consortium of almost 60 universities and colleges. The University of Michigan was one of the founding members of OTS\, taking a leadership role in developing research and educational opportunities in the tropics in the 1950s and 1960s. In this seminar\, Losos will also briefly discuss roles played by OTS and the University of Michigan in the development of discipline of tropical biology. Dr. Losos will then present data from multi-decadal ecological studies of trees\, lizards\, frogs\, and birds at OTS’ La Selva Biological Station\, Costa Rica.  Findings from these long-term studies reveal dramatic and surprising directional changes are underway in this well-studied\, old-growth neotropical forest.  The causes of such changes are still poorly understood\, but it is clear that they are multiple and interacting\, including land-use change\, climate change\, predator release\, and pesticide use.  She will then briefly compare findings from La Selva with those from three other Neotropical biological stations in Panama\, Brazil\, and Peru.

DESCRIPTION:Jay Cook\, University of Michigan\n\nLecture Abstract: Deep in the Ohio rust belt there is an old mansion called “Otira”–loaded with historical secrets. Few would suspect that this late Victorian showpiece was first commissioned by black musicians\, financed by global capital\, and conceived as a political statement. Nor would one imagine that the home’s original owner\, Frederick J. Loudin\, was among the world’s most famous men\, a figure who once sang for Queen Victoria\, dined with Kaiser Wilhelm\, performed at the Taj Mahal. Following his story backward\, this talk will explore the geopolitics of black celebrity\, 1770-1920. But it will also develop a broader historical argument about the significance of their circulation. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. His work has been published by the Smithsonian Institution. Gifts of Art is pleased to present this exhibition in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Translating Homer: from Papyri to Alexander Pope\" includes papyri and early printed books illustrating how the Iliad and the Odyssey\, two epic poems originally composed in the oral tradition\, were first written down\, edited\, and eventually translated into the main European languages. This journey of transmission and interpretation throughout the centuries ends with the first editions of Alexander Pope’s renderings of the poems.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will hear a series of readings from the poems in the original Greek and in several other languages\, including Latin\, English\, Dutch\, and Spanish.\n\nThe exhibit is part of the LSA Fall 2012 theme semester\, Translation.

DESCRIPTION:The speaker will discuss her work with the Walters Art Museum’s Curator of Ancient Art on Egypt’s Mysterious Book of the Faiyum\, an upcoming exhibition built around an ancient Egyptian text on papyrus. Some of the objects in the show have lost parts of their authentic selves to the ravages of time and the antiquities trade\, but reconstructions offer opportunities to see the objects in new ways. DESCRIPTION:Researched and organized by a team of Ph.D. candidates in the School of Architecture at Princeton University led by Professor Beatriz Colomina. The team included: Craig Buckley\, Anthony Fontenot\, Urtzi Grau\, Lisa Hsieh\, Alicia Imperiale\, Lydia Kallipoliti\, Olympia Kazi\, Daniel Lopez-Perez\, and Irene Sunwoo.\n\nThis exhibition tracks the critical function of independent architectural publications that were the engine of an intensely creative period of experimental architectural practice in the 1960s and 1970s. Known as \"little magazines\,\" the periodicals that proliferated during this period appeared in response to the political\, social and artistic changes of the time. The show includes manifestoes\, pamphlets\, building instruction manuals\, and a survey of magazine covers as well as professional magazines\, complemented by interviews with editors and designers of these publications.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition was given by The Guido A. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paulina Jaramillo\nAssistant Research Professor\,\nDepartment of Engineering\n and Public Policy\,\nCarnegie Mellon University\n\n\nExecutive Director\,\nRenewElec Project\n\nPrevious life cycle assessment (LCA) studies using limited system boundaries have attempted to quantify the benefit of offsetting coal use. However\, these studies do not consider the operations of the power grid and how changes to the operations of individual power plants will affect the system. In this study\, simplified economic dispatch models (representing existing power plants in a given region) and historical load data are used to determine how natural gas and coal utilization will change short-term in response to changes in natural gas prices and the retirement of coal power plants. The associated changes in fuel mix\, life cycle GHG emissions\, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides are reported. Results indicate that the change in air emissions are lower than suggested by life cycle assessment studies. In addition\, while net reductions of SO2 and NOx occur in the systems analyzed\, some counties will likely see increases in the damage costs associated with these emissions. This study shows that traditional life cycle studies overestimate the benefits of fuel switching and that incorporating the operations of energy systems is needed to properly capture these benefits.

The rejected finale of Beethoven’s op. 30/1\, reborn as the finale to op. 47\, not only bears the imprint of its original surroundings but also shaped the composition of the first two movements of op. 47.  The finale is\, so to speak\, the transmitter of structural “DNA” from a sonata at the threshold of Beethoven’s “heroic” style to a sonata exemplifying that style. Much was at stake in Beethoven’s endeavor\, for his current symphonic project was the Eroica\, for which the finale was essentially in place in the form of the Variations op. 35.

DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

He spent his childhood and youth in Normandy\, France\, and his dream of becoming a scientist grew together with his imagination and passion for oil painting and drawing. After moving to the US in 1998\, Fontaine became fascinated with sculpting. This self-taught artist explores funny and familiar subjects\, with close attention to details in human anatomy. Viewers will meet French\, Belgian\, British and American characters. Fontaine hopes that “”¦these cartoon characters will bring a smile to patients (children and adults\, alike).”

DESCRIPTION:Traditional kunqu\, a genre of classical Chinese theatre\, comes alive in the large scale photographs of Xu\, Zengquan. The viewer experiences the personalities of the characters and the spirit of the dance\, opening a window into traditional Chinese culture and history. Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. His work has been published by the Smithsonian Institution. Gifts of Art is pleased to present this exhibition in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

She grew up on a large family farm in Indiana\, went to University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana to earn a BFA in painting\, then to MSU to earn an MFA in sculpture. Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Translating Homer: from Papyri to Alexander Pope\" includes papyri and early printed books illustrating how the Iliad and the Odyssey\, two epic poems originally composed in the oral tradition\, were first written down\, edited\, and eventually translated into the main European languages. This journey of transmission and interpretation throughout the centuries ends with the first editions of Alexander Pope’s renderings of the poems.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will hear a series of readings from the poems in the original Greek and in several other languages\, including Latin\, English\, Dutch\, and Spanish.\n\nThe exhibit is part of the LSA Fall 2012 theme semester\, Translation.

DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

DESCRIPTION:By day\, Jean-Marc Fontaine is a molecular biologist\, and by night and weekend\, he is an artist. He spent his childhood and youth in Normandy\, France\, and his dream of becoming a scientist grew together with his imagination and passion for oil painting and drawing. After moving to the US in 1998\, Fontaine became fascinated with sculpting. This self-taught artist explores funny and familiar subjects\, with close attention to details in human anatomy. Viewers will meet French\, Belgian\, British and American characters. Fontaine hopes that “”¦these cartoon characters will bring a smile to patients (children and adults\, alike).”

DESCRIPTION:Traditional kunqu\, a genre of classical Chinese theatre\, comes alive in the large scale photographs of Xu\, Zengquan. The viewer experiences the personalities of the characters and the spirit of the dance\, opening a window into traditional Chinese culture and history. Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. His work has been published by the Smithsonian Institution. Gifts of Art is pleased to present this exhibition in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Valerie Mann has been showing her work professionally throughout the US and in Canada and Germany for 23 years.  She grew up on a large family farm in Indiana\, went to University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana to earn a BFA in painting\, then to MSU to earn an MFA in sculpture. Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Translating Homer: from Papyri to Alexander Pope\" includes papyri and early printed books illustrating how the Iliad and the Odyssey\, two epic poems originally composed in the oral tradition\, were first written down\, edited\, and eventually translated into the main European languages. This journey of transmission and interpretation throughout the centuries ends with the first editions of Alexander Pope’s renderings of the poems.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will hear a series of readings from the poems in the original Greek and in several other languages\, including Latin\, English\, Dutch\, and Spanish.\n\nThe exhibit is part of the LSA Fall 2012 theme semester\, Translation.

Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:Fiona Sampson was born in London. After a brief career as a concert violinist\, she studied at Oxford University\, where she won the Newdigate Prize. Her collections of poetry include Folding the Real (2001)\; The Distance Between Us (2005)\; and Common Prayer (2007)\, short-listed for the 2007 T. S. Eliot Prize. She was short-listed for the Forward Poetry Prize (Best Single Poem) in 2006. Since 2005\, she has been the editor of Poetry Review and in 2009\, edited the Poetry Book Society Recommended A Century of Poetry Review. She contributes regularly to radio and to a number of publications\, including The Guardian \, the Irish Times and The Liberal . Fiona Sampson received a Cholmondeley Award in 2009. Her latest collection of poetry\, Rough Music (2010) was shortlisted for the 2010 Forward Poetry Prize (Best Poetry Collection of the Year) and the 2010 T. S. Eliot Prize. In 2011 she was elected a Fellow and a Council Member of the Royal Society of Literature. She joins the MFA Program in Creative Writing this fall for a term as Visiting Professor of Poetry.              \nThe author will be available to sign books after the reading. DESCRIPTION:Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a new generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art\, architecture\, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts\, he explores the relationship between art\, contemporary culture\, and landscape. His practice\, WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect\, was established in 1992 and is based in New York City with a southern California office in Irvine.\n\nHe is committed to creating landscapes\, especially parks and other public spaces\, as a way of improving the quality of urban life. Much of his work pushes beyond traditional landscape typologies - plaza\, street\, and garden - to landscapes that draw on diverse cultural traditions and influences of the contemporary urban landscape. Smith's approach is directed at projects of varying scales and types: temporary installations\, private residential gardens\, public spaces\, parks and commercial projects. With a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as an art form\, the WORKSHOP specializes in the investigation of new expressions in landscape design.\n\nKen Smith is a graduate of Iowa Sate University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has taught and lectured at Harvard\, the City College of New York\, and other universities and institutions around the world. DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. He spent his childhood and youth in Normandy\, France\, and his dream of becoming a scientist grew together with his imagination and passion for oil painting and drawing. After moving to the US in 1998\, Fontaine became fascinated with sculpting. This self-taught artist explores funny and familiar subjects\, with close attention to details in human anatomy. Viewers will meet French\, Belgian\, British and American characters. Fontaine hopes that “”¦these cartoon characters will bring a smile to patients (children and adults\, alike).”

DESCRIPTION:Traditional kunqu\, a genre of classical Chinese theatre\, comes alive in the large scale photographs of Xu\, Zengquan. The viewer experiences the personalities of the characters and the spirit of the dance\, opening a window into traditional Chinese culture and history. Now a local practicing engineer\, Xu was born into a family of 10 brothers and sisters\, in Jiangsu\, China\, and discovered his passion for photography in his teens. His work has been published by the Smithsonian Institution. Gifts of Art is pleased to present this exhibition in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Translating Homer: from Papyri to Alexander Pope\" includes papyri and early printed books illustrating how the Iliad and the Odyssey\, two epic poems originally composed in the oral tradition\, were first written down\, edited\, and eventually translated into the main European languages. This journey of transmission and interpretation throughout the centuries ends with the first editions of Alexander Pope’s renderings of the poems.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will hear a series of readings from the poems in the original Greek and in several other languages\, including Latin\, English\, Dutch\, and Spanish.\n\nThe exhibit is part of the LSA Fall 2012 theme semester\, Translation.

DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

Now working and teaching in Ann Arbor\, Mann’s use and study of tools inspired this body of work. Used every day and sometimes taken for granted\, tools are indispensable in the making of art. These favorite tools are beautifully designed and well-thought out for their specific job.

DESCRIPTION:Ekaterina Mishina\, assistant professor of law\, Vyshaya shkola ekonomiki\; visiting professor of law\, U-M.\n\nThe legal profession is very much sought after in modern Russia. In Soviet times there was a small number of universities and law institutes where one could get a legal education\, today this is no longer a problem. There are law schools everywhere\, but though their number has multiplied\, the level of education has considerably decreased\, and a legal profession brings with it a number of challenges. The tremendous changes of the last two decades and the Russian transition to a market economy have presented lawyers with new requirements and new problems. When it’s impossible to do legal business in Russia\, when the courts have become political tools\, when the accusatory bias is still one of the hottest issues on the agenda\, what should the mission of a lawyer should be? Being a lawyer in today’s Russia involves many risks. More than a hundred lawyers have fled from the country\, some have been incarcerated\, while others have been mutilated or even killed. In her lecture\, Ekaterina Mishina will analyze the reasons for the crisis of the legal profession in Russia.\n\nEkaterina Mishina holds a doctorate in law from the Law School of Moscow State University. She worked for the Constitutional Court of Russia\, then headed the Legal Department of JSC “MOSTELECOM”. In 2002-05 she took part in the projects “Law-making” and “Club of Regional Journalism\,” both of which were sponsored by the Open Russia Foundation. In 2007-10\, Mishina worked on two large-scale projects for the INDEM Foundation. She participated in several World Bank\, Ford Foundation\, European Union\, and USAID projects as general manager and legal expert. She was a visiting scholar in NYU (1990-91)\, had internships in the U.S. Congress and DC office of Gardner\, Curton & Douglas (1993)\, and in 2006 took part in the U.S. Department of State Program “U.S.-Russia Experts Forum.” Since 2005 she has held an appointment as assistant professor of law at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics in Moscow\, where she teaches comparative constitutional law. Currently she is a research scholar at the University of Michigan. \n\nPart of the series Pluralism in Politics and Culture\, a new initiative jointly sponsored by CREES and WCED that examines the foundations of free and open societies. The project builds on the university’s rich legacy of study and support of the dissident culture in the former Soviet Union and on several existing efforts at U-M. The series focuses on multiple facets of political pluralism\, including its legal\, cultural\, and economic dimensions\, and explore them in a broader historical context.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Predicament Beyond Rights: Becoming a Residual Armenian in Turkish Anatolia.
DESCRIPTION:Hakem al-Rustom\, Manoogian Simone Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow\, University of Michigan.\n\nOut of approximately two million Ottoman Armenians living in 1914\, only 77\,433 officially remained as Turkish citizens in the formative years of the republic. In this presentation Hakem al-Rustom analyses the predicament of the residual Armenian population in Turkey as a process of denativization. A concept helps to broach gaps in the literature on nationalism\, demographic engineering\, and citizenship rights which focuses on Turkish state policies. As such\, it accounts for other important forces that worked in tandem with Turkish nationalist policies and resulted in emptying Anatolia of Armenians. These include post-World War I international diplomacy\, everyday tension between Armenians and Kurds in southeastern Anatolia\, and Armenian diaspora institutions in France. At a wider level\, this paper considers the experience of a population whose destruction was foundational to the formation of a nation-state. It therefore shifts the debate away from exclusion from citizenship rights to the historical exclusion from the wider state project.\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Jazz is undergoing changes of monumental magnitude and importance. Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense is a documentary film that captures the metamorphosis of jazz by showcasing the words\, music\, and spirit of the artists that are paving the way for an unprecedented musical revolution. Through interviews and live performance footage\, we explore the thoughts and lives of the musicians spearheading today’s jazz front lines. Directed by Michael Rivoira\, Lars Larson\, and Peter J. Vogt\, Icons Among Us examines the jazz music scene today by focusing the spotlight on many current jazz icons including Terence Blanchard\, Ravi Coltrane\, Robert Glasper\, Nicholas Payton\, Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band\, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band\, Donald Harrison Jr.\, Anat Cohen\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Medeski Martin & Wood. The film also features the legendary predecessors and influences of today’s contemporary jazz stars\, including Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, and Wynton Marsalis.\n\nThis program is part of the UMS on Film series designed to expand understanding of the artists and cultures represented on the UMS season and reveal something of the emotions and ideas behind the creative process. SUMMARY:Performance:Pete Siers Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:Like Clark Kent\, jazz percussionist Pete Siers is soft-spoken and unassuming–but put him behind a drum set and a hard-swinging\, intensely physical\, dynamically sensitive drummer emerges.  Pete has an international reputation for his “restless curiosity\, attention to detail\, and mastery of many different styles\,” according to Mike Stratton\, host of the FM 89.7 radio show\, “The Vinyl Side of Midnight.” Siers has played with jazz luminaries such as Russell Malone\, Mulgrew Miller\, Marian McPartland\, Lee Konitz\, Benny Golson\, James Moody\, Kenny Werner\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Eddie Daniels\, Frank Morgan\, Scott Hamilton\, Bob Wilber\, and Barry Harris. In addition to his expansive performance career\, Siers has played on over fifty recordings\, including Russell Malone’s Black Butterfly on Columbia Records. He recently played Carnegie Hall\, has toured Europe several times\, and is a long-time favorite at many jazz parties and festivals across the U.S. Pete continues to perform orchestral pops shows such as trumpeter Marcus Belgrave’s Louis Armstrong Tribute and Dave Bennett’s Salute to Benny Goodman. In addition to his performance and recording career\, Pete has taught percussion and jazz drumming for over twenty-five years. He teaches privately as well as having taught at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor School for Performing Arts\, Emory University\, Purdue University and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He was also an artist-in-residence at Interlochen School of the Arts. For this evening’s performance\, Pete will be joined by Duncan MacMillan\, playing the Hammond B3 organ\, and by Ralph Tope on guitar.\n\nThis monthly series\, curated by UM Associate Professor Adam Unsworth\, presents outstanding local artists in an intimate setting and is made possible by the Doris Sloan Memorial Fund.\n
