DESCRIPTION:After receiving a BFA from Rutgers University\, Denise Rohde went on to study photography with renowned photographer Art Sinsabaugh at the University of Illinois. Working for years in a darkroom\, the switch to digital allowed her to draw from her painting and printmaking experience. Being able to combine mediums digitally has unleashed her imagination. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brillo Blox & More: Sand Art Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. In addition to local gallery exhibitions and community installations\, her work has been displayed through the U.S. Arts and Embassy Program and showcased in Norway\, Barbados and Brazil. Kaplan presently works at Children's Hospital in Detroit where she creates art with children and adolescent patients to provide an atmosphere for healing. The Brillo Blox sand art sculpture is comprised of 12 cubes and is designed as a puzzle than can be assembled as an abstract sculpture. DESCRIPTION:Bright colors\, strong edges\, and intersecting geometric forms are the hallmarks of Patrick Dengate's current studio work. Drawing from the tradition of 20th century Cubism\, Dengate presents paintings and woodcuts with subjects ranging from Utah canyons\, Costa Rican towns\, busy rail yards\, and ships on the Great Lakes. His work is featured in the recently published book Eyes On: Landscapes\, a compilation of 50 contemporary painters from around the world. Dengate's work is on display in several corporate collections in Michigan and can be found in private collections across the US\, Canada and Europe.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:One Acre Ceramics: Handcrafted Stoneware
DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in China\, Mingshi Huang studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan\, where he earned his graduate degrees. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features portraits of and stories by Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) who work at the University of Michigan Health System. Stories by these nurses with advanced training overlay their portraits with words. Led by Assistant Professor Laurie Hartman\, this collaboration with Gifts of Art shines a spotlight on APRNs\, explaining how in their work they conduct evaluations\, order and interpret diagnostic tests\, deliver various treatments and prescribe medications. DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in China\, Mingshi Huang studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan\, where he earned his graduate degrees. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

They’ve been playing concerts at the club since 1973\, and are now making music for their third–or is it fourth?–generation of young fans and families. The brothers play a cartload of instruments and sing funny and sweet songs. Since 1994\, their Thanksgiving concerts have benefited Mott Children’s Hospital\, where San’s daughter Emily was born. Emily\, now 18\, is a fabulous musician herself and will join the brothers on vocals and violin\, and the Good Mischief Band will round out the forces that bring you a beloved annual event in family music in southeastern Michigan.

Then came years of choirs\, a guitar\, a dulcimer\, and some theater thrown into the pot. Over four decades of mostly original songs exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms\, she has created a repertory full of the stuff of life itself. A musician who has always hated categories\, Claudia describes herself as a \"creative noisemaker.\" Her concerts are so unified and full of life that one critic has described a Claudia Schmidt concert as \"a lot like falling in love. You never know what's going to happen next\, chances are it's going to be wonderful\, every moment is burned into your memory\, and you know you'll never be the same again.\" We've seen both folk and jazz band shows from Claudia at The Ark\, but this year\, she writes\, \"I will be doing my solo show\, which includes my voice\, 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer\, some folky stuff\, some jazzy stuff\, poems\, stories ... what I do best!\"

DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. In addition to local gallery exhibitions and community installations\, her work has been displayed through the U.S. Arts and Embassy Program and showcased in Norway\, Barbados and Brazil. Kaplan presently works at Children's Hospital in Detroit where she creates art with children and adolescent patients to provide an atmosphere for healing. The Brillo Blox sand art sculpture is comprised of 12 cubes and is designed as a puzzle than can be assembled as an abstract sculpture. SUMMARY:Exhibition:One Acre Ceramics: Handcrafted Stoneware
DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in China\, Mingshi Huang studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan\, where he earned his graduate degrees. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. DESCRIPTION:The political and cultural clashes between secularism and religious fundamentalism can be traced to the late Shah and his father Reza Khan who established the Pahlavi Regime. We will discuss the conflicts between the Shah and Prime Minister Mossadeq\, later Ayatollah Khomeini\, and the overthrow of the Shah in 1979. After the stolen 2007 Iranian Presidential elections and economic sanctions by the West\, the present clerical regime faces great challenges to its survival. Abbas Milani’s “The Shah” and “The Myth of the Great Satan” will be discussed. It would be helpful to read them in advance\, but not required. Handouts of principal information will be mailed to participants. Al Gourdji lived in Iran for the first 19 years of his life.\n\nNo class 11/26.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

Since then\, they have performed as recitalists and in concert with orchestras throughout the United States and Europe\, including performances at the Kiev International Music Festival (Ukraine)\, Varna International Masterclasses in Piano (Bulgaria)\, Moulin d\&##39\;Ande Arts Festival (France) and Burgos International Music Festival (Spain) in addition to appearances in every region of the United States. Working for years in a darkroom\, the switch to digital allowed her to draw from her painting and printmaking experience. Being able to combine mediums digitally has unleashed her imagination. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brillo Blox & More: Sand Art Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. In addition to local gallery exhibitions and community installations\, her work has been displayed through the U.S. Arts and Embassy Program and showcased in Norway\, Barbados and Brazil. Kaplan presently works at Children's Hospital in Detroit where she creates art with children and adolescent patients to provide an atmosphere for healing. The Brillo Blox sand art sculpture is comprised of 12 cubes and is designed as a puzzle than can be assembled as an abstract sculpture. DESCRIPTION:Bright colors\, strong edges\, and intersecting geometric forms are the hallmarks of Patrick Dengate's current studio work. Drawing from the tradition of 20th century Cubism\, Dengate presents paintings and woodcuts with subjects ranging from Utah canyons\, Costa Rican towns\, busy rail yards\, and ships on the Great Lakes. His work is featured in the recently published book Eyes On: Landscapes\, a compilation of 50 contemporary painters from around the world. SUMMARY:Exhibition:One Acre Ceramics: Handcrafted Stoneware
DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in China\, Mingshi Huang studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan\, where he earned his graduate degrees. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

DESCRIPTION:The long history of the Ancient World experienced numerous shifts in government and political regimes. In every case\, a socially stratified populace lived under a ruling party\, each with their own reactive strategies. This talk will explore the different literary modes with which both elites and non-elites in Mesopotamia and the Roman Empire expressed their approval towards or displeasure with the king (as in the case of the former) or the emperor (the case with the latter). Through a comparative and diachronic study\, I show that elite and non-elite interests in both cultures intertwine more than is usually recognized\, even in extreme cases with elite encouragement of non-elite concerns. Ultimately it was this mutual dialogue that dictated extant narratives about royal power in the Ancient World. More significantly\, textual references to authoritative regimes in both cultures reveal a consistent and continuous discourse towards power relationships that spanned many centuries.\n

DESCRIPTION:              Photographer-filmmaker William Klein takes on Handel’s Messiah\, creating a gorgeous concert film that mixes the sacred with the profane. Performed in its entirety (conducted by Mark Minkowski)\, the oratorio provides a narrative of Christ’s nativity\, passion\, and resurrection juxtaposed against images of the absurdities of and abuses against humans around the world. The film reveals a wide array of worshippers from the Bodybuilders of Christ to the Lavender Light Gay and Lesbian Interracial Choir to the Dallas Police Choir.  (1999\, 117 min.)\n\nThis program is part of the UMS on Film series designed to expand understanding of the artists and cultures represented on the UMS season and reveal something of the emotions and ideas behind the creative process. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brillo Blox & More: Sand Art Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. In addition to local gallery exhibitions and community installations\, her work has been displayed through the U.S. Arts and Embassy Program and showcased in Norway\, Barbados and Brazil. Kaplan presently works at Children's Hospital in Detroit where she creates art with children and adolescent patients to provide an atmosphere for healing. The Brillo Blox sand art sculpture is comprised of 12 cubes and is designed as a puzzle than can be assembled as an abstract sculpture. DESCRIPTION:Bright colors\, strong edges\, and intersecting geometric forms are the hallmarks of Patrick Dengate's current studio work. Drawing from the tradition of 20th century Cubism\, Dengate presents paintings and woodcuts with subjects ranging from Utah canyons\, Costa Rican towns\, busy rail yards\, and ships on the Great Lakes. His work is featured in the recently published book Eyes On: Landscapes\, a compilation of 50 contemporary painters from around the world. Dengate's work is on display in several corporate collections in Michigan and can be found in private collections across the US\, Canada and Europe.

DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in China\, Mingshi Huang studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan\, where he earned his graduate degrees. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. DESCRIPTION:Creating conference posters can be a big challenge – arranging the layout is often more difficult than creating the content! In this workshop\, participants will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to create high quality\, eye-catching posters. Participants will learn techniques for organizing materials\, adding text\, images and charts\, as well as best practices on how to print posters on the large format color printer located in GroundWorks\, the Media Conversion Lab at the Duderstadt Center\, or the TechDeck in the Shapiro Library. Basic computer skills are required\, but no prior experience with graphics applications is necessary. Regardless of the type of computer used in this session\, everything covered is applicable whether you normally use a Mac or a Windows PC.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. DESCRIPTION:Gail Kligman\, professor of sociology and director\, Center for European and Eurasian Studies\, University of California\, Los Angeles.\n\nIn largely agrarian countries like the Soviet Union\, Bulgaria\, and Romania\, the collectivization of agriculture was the first mass action through which the new communist regime initiated its radical program of social\, political\, cultural\, and economic transformation. Collectivization in Romania affected twelve million of the country’s sixteen million inhabitants. This talk presents a snapshot of various effects of collectivization on everyday life\, exploring the transformation of social organization and hierarchies of social relations that resulted from this process. Especially significant were changes in gender roles and generational expectations. The bureaucratization of work transformed daily practice\, along with the personhood ideals associated with it. And the Party’s institutionalization brought the political center directly into village life\, thereby shaping the politicization of the rural world.\n\nGail Kligman is professor of sociology and director of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies at the University of California\, Los Angeles. She completed her PhD at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and previously taught at the University of Chicago\, the University of Texas at Austin\, and Georgetown University. Her expertise spans the domains of women's studies\, anthropology\, and cultural studies. She has received a number of distinguished grants to support her research\, and her books have received some of the highest accolades in their respective fields. This talk is drawn from her most recent publication\, Peasants Under Siege: The Collectivization of Romanian Agriculture\, 1949-1962 (co-authored with Katherine Verdery). The book has received the following recognitions: 2012 Association for Slavic\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) Barbara Jelavich and Davis Center Book Prizes\, as well as Honorable Mention for the Wayne S. Vucinich Book Prize\; 2012 Association for Women in Slavic Studies (AWSS) Heldt Prize\; and 2012 American Sociological Association (ASA) Honorable Mentions in Political Sociology Section Best Book and Barrington Moore Best Book in Comparative-Historical Sociology.

DESCRIPTION:Farmington Hills\, Michigan artist Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan has a portfolio of work that includes trompe l'oeil clay\, glass mosaics\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and most recently\, sand art. In addition to local gallery exhibitions and community installations\, her work has been displayed through the U.S. Arts and Embassy Program and showcased in Norway\, Barbados and Brazil. Kaplan presently works at Children's Hospital in Detroit where she creates art with children and adolescent patients to provide an atmosphere for healing. The Brillo Blox sand art sculpture is comprised of 12 cubes and is designed as a puzzle than can be assembled as an abstract sculpture. Led by Assistant Professor Laurie Hartman\, this collaboration with Gifts of Art shines a spotlight on APRNs\, explaining how in their work they conduct evaluations\, order and interpret diagnostic tests\, deliver various treatments and prescribe medications. DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. Huang travels extensively between the US and China and currently teaches at Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province. Recently\, he completed several monumental\, museum commissioned sculptures in China. This exhibition is a reminiscence of Huang’s work done while in Ann Arbor. Although his interests spread from representational to expressionist\, Huang is rooted in a traditional ground. But the Warren Court disbanded more than 50 years ago. DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

DESCRIPTION:(FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) America’s national pastime has been a fan favorite in Japan at the professional level for more than 75 years. During that time\, Japanese baseball has developed such a unique character that at times it hardly resembles the American version from which it came. Brad Lefton has been covering baseball in both countries as a journalist since graduating from the University of Michigan in ’92 with an MA in Japanese Studies. From no reporters in the locker room to year round practice and more\, join him as he leads a discussion on many of the surprising differences and how they help to explain Japanese culture.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Brad Lefton has been communicating to Japanese and American audiences for two decades as a bilingual journalist specializing in baseball. He has worked on countless documentaries and other programs for networks such Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) and ESPN and has contributed to publications such as New York Times\, Seattle Times\, and Asahi Shimbun. After earning an MA in Japanese Studies from U-M\, Lefton worked for NHK in Tokyo. 1995 was a defining year for both Japan-U.S. relations in baseball and his career\; Hideo Nomo pitched for the Dodgers and Bobby Valentine managed the Chiba Lotte Marines. Lefton followed both events. He co-authored a book with Valentine\, Senbon Nokku wo Koete\, before returning to St. Louis from where he continues covering baseball in both countries.

From 2010 to 2013 he served as editor of Best European Fiction anthologies (Dalkey Archives).\n\nHemon is the author of The Question of Bruno\, Nowhere Man\, The Lazarus Project and his latest short story collection\, Love and Obstacles was published in May 2009. His collection of auto-biographical essays\, The Book of My Lives\, is forthcoming from Farrar Straus and Giroux in the fall of 2012. DESCRIPTION:Janine Antoni works in a variety of mediums including sculpture\, photography\, installation\, and video to capture the human condition with a physicality that speaks directly to the viewer’s body. Transforming everyday activities such as eating\, bathing\, and sleeping into art\, Antoni’s primary tool has always been her own body. She has chiseled cubes of lard and chocolate with her teeth\, washed away the faces of soap busts made in her own likeness\, and used the brainwave signals recorded while she dreamed at night as a pattern for weaving a blanket the following morning. She has had major exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, and S.I.T.E. Santa Fe. She has been awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award.\n\nWith support from Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts Grand Rapids\, Cranbrook Academy of Art.\n

The Penny Stamps presentation will be “designed especially for students interested in a career in the arts.”\n\nOctober 18 - The beautiful yet dark visions in Alexis Rockman’s paintings show worlds where civilization and nature have collided.
