SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bowling\, Burgers & Dogs: Digital Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:After receiving a BFA from Rutgers University\, Denise Rohde went on to study photography with renowned photographer Art Sinsabaugh at the University of Illinois. SUMMARY:Exhibition:One Acre Ceramics: Handcrafted Stoneware
DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. A palette of luminous glazes highlight the hand-carved designs and crisp lines\, giving each piece a polished\, radiant finish. \n\n1500 E. Medical Center Drive\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Exhibition:African Art and the Shape of Time
DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. Additional support provided by the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Office of the Vice President for Research\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION (of R. & P. Heydon).\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Discovering Eighteenth-Century British America through the William L. Clements Library Collection
DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Jesper Just: \"This Nameless Spectacle\"
DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The New Politics of Extremism
DESCRIPTION:We will read and discuss “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks”\, by Thomas Mann and Norman Orenstein\, a liberal and a conservative. Amazon’s book description tells of how our main political parties have given up traditions of compromise and that they now endanger our system of constitutional democracy. The authors offer ideas for how the media should better educate the public and how the public must begin to view critical issues strategically rather than emotionally. \n\nGerry Lapidus will lead the first class and volunteers will be requested to lead the subsequent discussions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Shah of Iran and Understanding the Troubled History of U.S.-Iranian Relations
DESCRIPTION:The political and cultural clashes between secularism and religious fundamentalism in Iran can be traced to the life of the late Shah and his father\, Reza Khan. The Shah at age 22 was installed as ruler in 1941\, and ruled for 38 years until his overthrow in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini. Iran's present clerical regime defines itself in terms of its opposition to the United States\, invoking the Qor'an to brand America as the \"Great Satan.\" After the stolen Iranian 2009 presidential election and economic sanctions by the West\, the clerical regime now faces the most serious challenge to its rule.\n\nSpeaker: Al Gourdji\, C.P.A.\, M.B.A.\, City College of New York\, who lived the first 19 years of his life in Iran. Prior to retirement he was a corporate officer of Dow Corning Corporation in charge of its global tax activities.\n\nThis is the fourth of 9 lectures in OLLI's monthly 2nd Tuesday Distinguished Lecture Series. OLLI activities are open to anyone age 50 or older.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
DESCRIPTION:The Seoul-based art collaborative\, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (YHCHI) is known for innovative video works that exist at the nexus of visual art and digital literature. Blurring the boundaries between media\, technologies\, and cultural histories\, YHCHI has gained international acclaim for their \"net art\" productions-mostly black- and-white videos of quickly flashing capitalized text in a generic font with synchronized music. This exhibition will present a newly commissioned piece by UMMA\, which will be added to the artists' website\, yhchang.com.\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. Additional support provided by the Dr. Robert and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CES End of Semester Luncheon. \"Taking Stock of Europe's Crises: Politics\, Debt\, Recession\, and the Euro”
DESCRIPTION:Moderator: Joshua Cole\, CES director and associate professor of history. Presenters: Jim Adams\, professor of economics\, Dario Gaggio\, associate professor of history\; Anna Grzymala-Busse\, professor of political science\; and Daniel Halberstam\, professor of law. U-M. Co-sponsor: WCED. Part of \"The European Economic Crisis and its Political Dimensions.\" Free and open to the public.\n\nThere has been\, of course\, no single \"European Crisis\" in the past several years. The banking crisis that spread from the United States to Europe in 2008\, and the sovereign debt crises that spread from Greece to Portugal and Italy in 2009\, are different from the punctured real estate bubbles and bank bailouts that tripped up the Spanish and Irish economies during the same year. Together\, however\, these concurrent crises have revealed how fragile the idea of a united Europe is in the present\, both as a monetary union and as a political ideal. Many have asserted that the answer to the current problems faced by the Eurozone is \"more Europe\" even as new fissures have opened up between the North and the South\, making it difficult to imagine what kinds of policies or institutions might make \"more Europe\" possible. \n\nA distinguished panel of experts from the University of Michigan's faculty will discuss the on-going crises in Europe from the perspective of their respective disciplines. What do economists agree on\, and where do they disagree in their analysis of the current situation? How has the present crisis changed the story that historians\, political scientists and specialists in European constitutional law tell about the story of European integration in the second half of the twentieth century?

DESCRIPTION:What does a clothesline hobbyist collect\, and why? This fun presentation and display of laundry nostalgia will revive memories of simpler times when laundry was always hung to dry outdoors – when folks went “online” without the Internet. We’ll touch on washday history and sociological issues of ethnic stereotypes\, feminism\, and the demise of the clothesline as automatic dryers emerged. We’ll learn why “solar drying” is the way to go. There will be a “show-and-tell\,” laundry poetry\, personal stories\, and lots of sharing. Let’s “hang out” together! SUMMARY:Film Screening:Cultures of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003\, on the eve of the Iraq war\, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and\, as she saw it\, heading for self-destruction. After several years\, traveling over five continents\, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story. From Iran\, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression\, to Burma\, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship\, moving on to Brazil\, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars\, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon\, where photography\, music\, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard\, Cultures Of Resistance explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.\n\nFeaturing: Medellín poets for peace\, Capoeira masters from Brazil\, Niger Delta militants\, Iranian graffiti artists\, women’s movement leaders in Rwanda\, Lebanon’s refugee filmmakers\, US political pranksters\, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River\, Israeli dissidents\, hip-hop artists from Palestine\, and many more. For more information about the film\, visit http://films.culturesofresistance.org/.\n\n(2011\, 73 min.)\n\nCultures of Resistance is being presented as part of the film series Examining Heroes and Icons\, which UMMA is offering in conjunction with the exhibition Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire (on view September 22\, 2012 until January 13\, 2013)\, focusing on the idea of heroes and exploring ways in which heroes are defined through images.\n\nThis film series is curated by the UMMA Student Programming and Advisory Council and cosponsored by MFlicks and the University Musical Society (UMS).\n\nGenerous support for the exhibition Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire is provided by the Joseph F. SUMMARY:Performance:Lee Murdock
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal lore of the Great Lakes\n\nLee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories of the Great Lakes\, songs made of hard work and hard living\, of ships that come in and ships that have gone down. Tonight\, Lee arrives in port with his Christmas Ship Concert\, a holiday show commemorating the turn-of-the-century tradition of carrying Christmas trees to Great Lakes port cities. At the end of the lumber season every year\, Great Lakes captains would carry one final cargo\, heralding the holiday season with a deck piled high with fresh-cut evergreen trees and garlands. It's a one-of-a-kind seasonal celebration\, and a great way to see the man Dirty Linen called \"the premier interpreter of songs and tales about the Great Lakes.\" Lee comes to town with a new all-instrumental holiday album\, \"A Wordless Christmas.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University Symphony Orchestra (USO) and conductor Kenneth Kiesler continue the orchestra\&##39\;s season with two great symphonic works. The concert opens with the great Romantic Symphony No. 4 by Robert Schumann\, and concludes with Ottorino Respighi\&##39\;s opulent and cinematic description of Rome and Romans\, Feste Romane (Roman Festivals). Respighi set out to write music with a “maximum of orchestral sonority and color.\" The piece evokes the atmospheres of Rome with the sounds of mandolin\, chant and drunken song\, the calls of a barker\, and the dance rhythms of the Saltarello. The USO is the winner of the 2011 American Prize in Orchestral Performance\, and music director Kenneth Kiesler is the recipient of the 2011 American Prize in Conducting.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASP Lecture. \"Re-reading the Crusades: Armenian Sources.\"
DESCRIPTION:The general trend in the scholarship surrounding the crusades in the last half-century has been one which considered this period solely from the perspective of Western Europe\, neglecting to acknowledge material in Armenian\, Arabic\, Greek\, Hebrew and other traditions as valuable resources to the study of the period. As a result\, a majority of the scholarship surrounding the crusades has set the narratives of Western Europe in opposition to those of the “east\,” contributing to the understanding of this period as solely antagonistic. In an attempt to break away from and argue against compartmentalized readings of crusading texts\, my talk will begin with an assessment and evaluation of crusading scholarship\, as well as a commentary on the classification of literary and historiographic narratives as “crusading” texts. By providing a brief survey and analysis of Armenian sources\, the second section will then move to a discussion of the contribution of the Armenians to the to the study of the crusading period. Drawing attention to one of these primary sources\, the talk will conclude with a discussion of the “Lamentation over the capture of Jerusalem” by the Catholicos Grigor Tlay\, and will contextualize this lament within the greater narrative of the genre of lament\, the Crusades\, and Mediterranean Studies.\n\nTamar Boyadjian\, Principal Museum Scientist\, UCLA. \nCo-sponsors: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, Medieval and Early Modern Studies\, Mediterranean Topographies Workshop.

SUMMARY:Performance:Shawn Colvin
DESCRIPTION:New music from Shawn!\n\nJust about every young singer-songwriter has imitated Shawn Colvin musically at one time or another. This South Dakota-born folk-rocker puts herself under the microscope and then backs off and boils it all down to a set of memorable pop hooks. Shawn's recent \"Live\" album won a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Recording along with a rave from Thom Jurek of the All Music Guide\, who called it \"a delightful\, intimate overview of her career.\" But Shawn's live shows always include some surprises and flashes of new insight as well. Shawn comes to town with \"All Fall Down\,\" her first new album of original material in six years. It was produced by Buddy Miller\, and AllMusic.com says it \"ranks with Colvin's most satisfying work since the '90s.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Innocence and the Death Penalty
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Gross\, J.D.\, Professor of Law\, U-M\, will discuss the intersection of two contemporary facets of criminal justice in the United States: our cooling love affair with capital punishment\, and our increasing awareness that innocent people are convicted of serious crimes with disturbing regularity. He will review the empirical context of these issues\, and discuss how the Supreme Court has failed to come to terms with the implications of the many recent exonerations of defendants who had been sentenced to death\, and the near certainty that other innocent defendants have been put to death.\n\nThis is the last of 6 lectures in the series\, “The Supreme Court: Impact of Current Decisions on Our Society.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Over the Rhine
DESCRIPTION:Dreamy\, literate\, spiritual folk-fock\n\nNamed for a tough but enduringly creative neighborhood north of downtown Cincinnati\, Over the Rhine is the duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. Their ethereal sounds--dreamy\, sweeping\, highly literate and melancholy -- have drawn comparisons to the likes of Cowboy Junkies. Says Leslie Benson of the Dayton City Paper: \"The music of Cincinnati-based folk/roots band Over the Rhine seeps into you with a rich hunger -- each note a separate\, glimmering cloud-diamond.\" And someone once described OTR\"s music as a mash-up of spirituality\, whimsy and sensuality (\"thank you\, thank you\, thank you\,\" they say). If you've never heard Over the Rhine\, this is a great time to check them out. They're unlike just about another group in the music business\, and they have some terrific Christmas songs that are meaningful to those of any faith (or none at all).

SUMMARY:Other:Art & Environment Gallery: Work of Sara Adlerstein
DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering. They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Father-Son Relationship: Chip Off the Old Block or Not
DESCRIPTION:At this point in life\, we often review the past. What has shaped our character and destiny? The role of fathers is often significant. What are the building blocks in childhood? How did we deal with the non-encouraging father\, or one who loudly always has the last word? Mort Chethik\, Emeritus Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan\, will illustrate with some cases highlighting these issues. The purpose of the course is to gain perspective on this relationship\, as well as our own role as fathers with our sons.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Francis Alys: Guards
DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Erin Zindle & Friends Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:A holiday show from some of Michigan's fastest-rising young musicians\n\nThis year's show will include music by The Ragbirds as well as performances by members of The MacPodz\, Appleseed Collective and other Ann Arbor favorites. Featured artists include Laith Al-Saadi\, Madcat Ruth\, Chris Buhalis\, Jetty Rae\, Tyler Duncan (Ella Riot/My Dear Disco)\, the Moxie Strings\, Dan Piccolo\, Mike Boyd and many more. With comedienne Shelly Smith as the MC for the night\, this rare show has a charm that you don’t want to miss.\n\nSince 2008\, in the middle of the Mitten\, in the heart of December\, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique\, family-friendly holiday show. The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, its soul is creativity and each show is unforgettable.\n\n“Ebird”\, of course\, is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin’s budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time yearly that the entire Zindle family gathered to sing songs together and that early\, communal experience of music took deep roots.
