DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Charley Harper by Motawi: Ceramic Art Tile
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features Motawi's new collection of tiles based on the work of beloved wildlife artist Charley Harper (1922-2007). Harper's work is modern\, sophisticated and completely charming. His minimal graphic style lends itself perfectly to Motawi's cuenca tile making technique. Nawal Motawi graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Fine Art. In 1992\, she founded Motawi Tileworks in a garage studio. Today\, Nawal employs more than 30 people and sells tile through hundreds of retailers around the county. In addition to this exhibit of newly released tiles\, the University Hospital has Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator Lobbies on floors 1-8.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Garden of Eden is also the Garden of Infancy? That the tree of life is also the life giving womb? In new work illuminating familiar favorites\, snowflake master Dr. Thomas L. Clark delves into the biological significance of ancient symbolism in exquisite\, hand-cut paper creations. Clark's snowflake of the tree of knowledge explores the biological origins of good and evil\, shedding new light on the curves of the serpent. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Hidden Glimpses of Nature: Photography
DESCRIPTION:The photography of Charles St. Charles reveals hidden glimpses of nature that few people have witnessed or are even aware exist. His work covers a vast spectrum\, from the scale of very small while recording light passing through the natural lens of miniscule dew drops\, to the scale of the very large while recording fields of daisies and fields of stars in the same image. The briefest moments of kissing and cavorting fox kits are frozen in time\, while extraordinary long exposures taken during the night expose brilliant fall foliage surrounded by moving mist. Charles' unmanipulated images all point to the same conclusion – it is a phenomenal world that we live in.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Inside & Out: Fragments & Narratives in Clay
DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit celebrates the emerging artistry of students from Saline public schools. Saline Area Schools are strong in visual education\, and students learn and participate in a wide range of media and processes throughout grade school. Every student develops an understanding of production\, criticism\, history\, and aesthetics within the visual arts. In this exhibition\, work from young people in grades K-12 will be displayed in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Landscape Forms: Painting Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Francis Alys: Guards
DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Garden of Eden is also the Garden of Infancy? That the tree of life is also the life giving womb? In new work illuminating familiar favorites\, snowflake master Dr. Thomas L. Clark delves into the biological significance of ancient symbolism in exquisite\, hand-cut paper creations. Clark's snowflake of the tree of knowledge explores the biological origins of good and evil\, shedding new light on the curves of the serpent. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. The annual free snowflake making workshop will be held on Thursday\, January 3\, 2012 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the Gifts of Art Gallery-Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Inside & Out: Fragments & Narratives in Clay
DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit celebrates the emerging artistry of students from Saline public schools. Saline Area Schools are strong in visual education\, and students learn and participate in a wide range of media and processes throughout grade school. Every student develops an understanding of production\, criticism\, history\, and aesthetics within the visual arts. In this exhibition\, work from young people in grades K-12 will be displayed in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. The students explore themes as presented by seven different teachers in a variety of mediums\, from drawing and painting to ceramics and sculpture\, are included in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Landscape Forms: Painting Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Garden of Eden is also the Garden of Infancy? That the tree of life is also the life giving womb? In new work illuminating familiar favorites\, snowflake master Dr. Thomas L. Clark delves into the biological significance of ancient symbolism in exquisite\, hand-cut paper creations. Clark's snowflake of the tree of knowledge explores the biological origins of good and evil\, shedding new light on the curves of the serpent. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. The annual free snowflake making workshop will be held on Thursday\, January 3\, 2012 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the Gifts of Art Gallery-Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Inside & Out: Fragments & Narratives in Clay
DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit celebrates the emerging artistry of students from Saline public schools. Saline Area Schools are strong in visual education\, and students learn and participate in a wide range of media and processes throughout grade school. Every student develops an understanding of production\, criticism\, history\, and aesthetics within the visual arts. In this exhibition\, work from young people in grades K-12 will be displayed in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Landscape Forms: Painting Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Rev Robert Jones
DESCRIPTION:A Detroit champion of American roots music and storytelling\n\nRobert B. Jones has more than twenty years of experience as a performer\, musician\, storyteller\, radio producer/host and music educator. He has opened for and played with some of the finest musicians in the world. Still\, Robert considers his greatest honor to be his call to the gospel of ministry. He was born in Detroit\, Michigan in 1956. His father was from West Pointe\, Mississippi and his mother hailed from Conecuh County\, Alabama. He grew up listening to and loving a wide variety of music\, especially the blues. Influenced by legendary bluesman Willie Dixon\, Robert developed an educational program called Blues For Schools. This program has literally taken him into classrooms all over the country\, and for approximately the next 15 years Robert polished his craft as both as a performer and a music educator. He's joined by Bernice Jones\, whom he married in 1986. The two began performing in 2004-2005 at several Michigan music festivals\, and they have since traveled as far away as England with a unique concert that encompasses storytelling and song\, both of a positive sort that has traditionally motivated and sparked social change throughout history.

Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features Motawi's new collection of tiles based on the work of beloved wildlife artist Charley Harper (1922-2007). Harper's work is modern\, sophisticated and completely charming. His minimal graphic style lends itself perfectly to Motawi's cuenca tile making technique. Nawal Motawi graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Fine Art. In 1992\, she founded Motawi Tileworks in a garage studio. Today\, Nawal employs more than 30 people and sells tile through hundreds of retailers around the county. In addition to this exhibit of newly released tiles\, the University Hospital has Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator Lobbies on floors 1-8.

DESCRIPTION:The photography of Charles St. Charles reveals hidden glimpses of nature that few people have witnessed or are even aware exist. His work covers a vast spectrum\, from the scale of very small while recording light passing through the natural lens of miniscule dew drops\, to the scale of the very large while recording fields of daisies and fields of stars in the same image. The briefest moments of kissing and cavorting fox kits are frozen in time\, while extraordinary long exposures taken during the night expose brilliant fall foliage surrounded by moving mist. Charles' unmanipulated images all point to the same conclusion – it is a phenomenal world that we live in.

DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features Motawi's new collection of tiles based on the work of beloved wildlife artist Charley Harper (1922-2007). Harper's work is modern\, sophisticated and completely charming. His minimal graphic style lends itself perfectly to Motawi's cuenca tile making technique. Nawal Motawi graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Fine Art. In 1992\, she founded Motawi Tileworks in a garage studio. Today\, Nawal employs more than 30 people and sells tile through hundreds of retailers around the county. In addition to this exhibit of newly released tiles\, the University Hospital has Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator Lobbies on floors 1-8.

DESCRIPTION:The photography of Charles St. Charles reveals hidden glimpses of nature that few people have witnessed or are even aware exist. His work covers a vast spectrum\, from the scale of very small while recording light passing through the natural lens of miniscule dew drops\, to the scale of the very large while recording fields of daisies and fields of stars in the same image. The briefest moments of kissing and cavorting fox kits are frozen in time\, while extraordinary long exposures taken during the night expose brilliant fall foliage surrounded by moving mist. Charles' unmanipulated images all point to the same conclusion – it is a phenomenal world that we live in.

DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. DESCRIPTION:Generations of reggae\n\nReggae music has never stopped evolving\, but for millions of people from around the world it’s still defined by the songs of Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Wailers have performed with international acts such as Sting\, Stevie Wonder\, Carlos Santana\, as well as reggae legends Peter Tosh\, Bunny Wailer\, and Burning Spear. Their most recent collaborators include Kenny Chesney\, Eve\, Jason Mraz\, and Colbie Caillat. The anchor of the band is Aston “Family Man” Barrett\, who in addition to being Marley’s most trusted lieutenant\, played on countless other classic reggae hits throughout the seventies. The authenticity he brings to the Wailers’ sound is indisputable\, and yet today’s line-up combines old-school know-how with lead vocals from one of Jamaica’s most exciting new singers. Koolant joined the Wailers soon after his cameo appearance in the film \"Made In Jamaica.\" Like Marley\, Koolant spent his formative years in the Jamaican countryside. He was raised between Bath and Wilmington\, some thirty miles outside Kingston. “It’s been a wonderful experience\, singing with the Wailers because so many of Bob Marley’s songs are still relevant to what’s happening right now. They are of the times\,” Koolant says. “Bob Marley was a prophet\, and it’s a honor to be part of that.\" Yet there’s a great deal more to the Wailers than reliving the past–the Wailers have succeeded in turning a fresh page and\, led by their charismatic new singer\, they’re ready to make history once more.

DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Charley Harper by Motawi: Ceramic Art Tile
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features Motawi's new collection of tiles based on the work of beloved wildlife artist Charley Harper (1922-2007). Harper's work is modern\, sophisticated and completely charming. His minimal graphic style lends itself perfectly to Motawi's cuenca tile making technique. Nawal Motawi graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Fine Art. In 1992\, she founded Motawi Tileworks in a garage studio. Today\, Nawal employs more than 30 people and sells tile through hundreds of retailers around the county. In addition to this exhibit of newly released tiles\, the University Hospital has Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator Lobbies on floors 1-8.

In new work illuminating familiar favorites\, snowflake master Dr. Thomas L. Clark delves into the biological significance of ancient symbolism in exquisite\, hand-cut paper creations. Clark's snowflake of the tree of knowledge explores the biological origins of good and evil\, shedding new light on the curves of the serpent. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Hidden Glimpses of Nature: Photography
DESCRIPTION:The photography of Charles St. Charles reveals hidden glimpses of nature that few people have witnessed or are even aware exist. His work covers a vast spectrum\, from the scale of very small while recording light passing through the natural lens of miniscule dew drops\, to the scale of the very large while recording fields of daisies and fields of stars in the same image. The briefest moments of kissing and cavorting fox kits are frozen in time\, while extraordinary long exposures taken during the night expose brilliant fall foliage surrounded by moving mist. Charles' unmanipulated images all point to the same conclusion – it is a phenomenal world that we live in.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Inside & Out: Fragments & Narratives in Clay
DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit celebrates the emerging artistry of students from Saline public schools. Saline Area Schools are strong in visual education\, and students learn and participate in a wide range of media and processes throughout grade school. Every student develops an understanding of production\, criticism\, history\, and aesthetics within the visual arts. In this exhibition\, work from young people in grades K-12 will be displayed in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. The students explore themes as presented by seven different teachers in a variety of mediums\, from drawing and painting to ceramics and sculpture\, are included in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Landscape Forms: Painting Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Discovering Eighteenth-Century British America through the William L. Clements Library Collection
DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:The third exhibit in the Art & Environment Gallery is \"Water Blues\,\" featuring work by Sara Adlerstein\, an associate research scientist at the School of Natural Resources and Environment.\n\nThe exhibit begins with an artist talk and public reception Thursday\, Nov. 8\, at 4 p.m.\, in the Ford Commons in the Dana Building. The public is invited.\n\n\"In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach\,\" said Adlerstein\, an accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit. \"Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\"\n\nAt the School of Natural Resources and Environment\, Adlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist in the school's Conservation Ecology field of study. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Her work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems.\n\nShe did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.\n\nIn 2001\, Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband\, Edgar Meyhofer\, a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the U-M College of Engineering.  They have two sons.\n\nArtist statement by Sara Adlerstein:\n\nI am a scientist and a visual artist\, or the other way around....\n\nIn my world\, art and science belong together as naturallyӬas air and water. Both inform my work influencing my approach. Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such\, I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nI also view art as a vehicle that transcends academia in communicating environmental issues to wider audiences extending the reach of traditional research publications. My paintings are often environmentally based and images build on my experience as a scientist and my sensibility as an artist to communicate concerns\, dreams and emotions all emerging from a deep and relentless love for life.\n\nIn the current exhibit\, you will find images inspired by the beauty of the Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems and my research on environmental stresses threatening their health and function. These are visions of worlds that exist in a place inӬmy heart. These alternative realities develop in front of my eyes as I research interconnectivities of streams and lakes\; imperilments of species that have become endangered\; population fluctuations\; and ecosystem dynamics ever so affected by human interventions.\n\nI hope for conversation departures to raise awareness of how we can be better stewards for our environment.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features Motawi's new collection of tiles based on the work of beloved wildlife artist Charley Harper (1922-2007). Harper's work is modern\, sophisticated and completely charming. His minimal graphic style lends itself perfectly to Motawi's cuenca tile making technique. Nawal Motawi graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Fine Art. In 1992\, she founded Motawi Tileworks in a garage studio. Today\, Nawal employs more than 30 people and sells tile through hundreds of retailers around the county. In addition to this exhibit of newly released tiles\, the University Hospital has Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator Lobbies on floors 1-8.

Clark's snowflake of the tree of knowledge explores the biological origins of good and evil\, shedding new light on the curves of the serpent. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. DESCRIPTION:The photography of Charles St. Charles reveals hidden glimpses of nature that few people have witnessed or are even aware exist. His work covers a vast spectrum\, from the scale of very small while recording light passing through the natural lens of miniscule dew drops\, to the scale of the very large while recording fields of daisies and fields of stars in the same image. The briefest moments of kissing and cavorting fox kits are frozen in time\, while extraordinary long exposures taken during the night expose brilliant fall foliage surrounded by moving mist. Charles' unmanipulated images all point to the same conclusion – it is a phenomenal world that we live in.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Inside & Out: Fragments & Narratives in Clay
DESCRIPTION:Mari Ogihara uses clay as a medium for its close resemblance to skin. Her ceramic sculptures create tension and unity between raw and ornamented surfaces and illicit feelings of sensuality and serenity. After receiving a BFA in ceramics from U-M in 2003\, Ogihara went on to study in Kyoto\, Japan to experience ceramics in her native country. Upon her return she attended Temple University of Philadelphia to receive her MFA in 2006. She is the recipient of several grants & awards including the NICHE award in 2011\, and has completed ceramic residencies in the US\, France and Brazil. She currently maintains a studio practice at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester\, New York.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit celebrates the emerging artistry of students from Saline public schools. Saline Area Schools are strong in visual education\, and students learn and participate in a wide range of media and processes throughout grade school. Every student develops an understanding of production\, criticism\, history\, and aesthetics within the visual arts. In this exhibition\, work from young people in grades K-12 will be displayed in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. DESCRIPTION:A U-M graduate from the School of Art & Design in 1949\, Karin L. Bodycombe forged new territory in the arts. Working to pave the way for others\, she studied at Wayne State University and earned a degree in Art Education in 1952\, later inspiring many student artists. Creating in watercolor\, gouache\, pen\, acrylics and oils\, Bodycombe said of her work\, \"I paint landscape compositions reducing them to the basic areas or forms of the subject resembling the environment only through the tiles. Brush strokes express my feelings.\" Bodycombe has won many national awards and has exhibited her work in solo shows in Michigan and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg is an award winning artist whose figurative and architectonic sculptural ceramics\, drawings and paintings have been exhibited widely across the US and locally at WSG Gallery\, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Clay Gallery. Born in New York City\, Polenberg received a BA from CUNY Brooklyn College and an MFA from U-M. She has taught art at U-M\, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and UM-Flint\, among others. Polenberg's work is in collections in the US\, England\, France\, Canada and Australia. This exhibit rejoices in childrens' birthday parties! Along with celebrating the special birthday child\, there is delight in the festive decorations\, the birthday cake\, the friends\, and even the unexpected.

DESCRIPTION:Older and younger people don't live in silos\, they live in families and neighborhoods. Yet advocates and policy makers divide generations under the guise of guaranteeing services and supports so they can thrive. The resulting age-based segregation decreases social capital and increases competition for resources. Using an intergenerational lens to craft social policy can help us build communities that are good places to grow up and grow old. This session will provide context and touch on innovative solutions that support the premise that we are stronger together.\n\nSpeaker: Donna M. Butts\, Executive Director\, Generations United \n\nGenerations United is the national membership organization focused solely on improving the lives of children\, youth\, and older people through intergenerational strategies\, programs and public policies. In 2004\, Butts was honored with the National Council on the Aging's Jack Ossofsky award for leadership\, creativity and innovation in programs and services for older persons. In 2012 she was named by The Nonprofit Times as one of the Top 50 most powerful and influential nonprofit executives in the nation. She is a respected author and speaker who has been invited by the U.N. to sit on four expert panels on aging policy and intergenerational solidarity. \n\nThis is the first of six lectures in the third series of Thursday lectures\, \"Generations: Bridging the Divide.\"

DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Francis Alys: Guards
DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:Armed with a bachelor's degree from University of North Texas and a master's degree from the Boston Conservatory\, Tracy Kash Thomas is an accomplished classical and jazz flutist who is now actively songwriting\, arranging and performing. She won the 2009 Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist and has been nominated for many others in recent years\, including Jazz Composer\, Jazz Instrumentalist and R&B Artist. Guitarist Duane Allen Harlick is also a celebrated and award winning singer/songwriter\, and together this duo gives a dynamic performance reaching across genres\, including classical\, jazz and tango.

DESCRIPTION:Uniquely skewed country sounds\n\nSix years have passed since the release of Freakwater's last album\, End Time. During that time\, their longest break since their 1989 debut\, Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge Bean released solo records\; Irwin's achingly sincere \"Cut Yourself a Switch\,\" and Bean's lush\, heartbreaking \"Dragging Wonder Lake.\" The artistic separation of these two\, a result more of circumstance than design\, could not last\, and plans to create a new Freakwater album started to evolve. Lyrically\, Freakwater continues to write about heartache and sadness\, yet also touch on subjects not often broached in traditional country music. Dylan once said\, \"She knows there's no success like failure\, and that failure's no success at all\,\" a phrase that aptly describes the Freakwater perspective. The new music takes on an increasingly ominous\, compelling tone with each new listen. Like the album cover's warped image of a burning bouquet\, the music itself represents an exquisite blend of beauty\, horror\, and inexplicable optimism
