SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birthing Reproductive Justice: 150 Years of Images and Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Reproductive Justice -- the right to have children\, not have children\, and parent our children in healthy and safe environments -- is a movement and perspective that arose in the 1990s. Articulated and led by women of color with a more encompassing social vision\, reproductive justice usually incorporates both a framework of human rights and an awareness of the intersectionality of women’s identities and struggles against sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, and economic marginalization.\n\nThis exhibit provides a historical context for the emergence and antecedents of reproductive justice. Given that women's lives have never been reducible to one dimension of their reproductive health\, this exhibit traces a longer history of reproductive justice\, illustrating many facets of experiences\, debates\, and policies related to pregnancy\, birth\, birth control\, and raising children.\n\nThe exhibit is held in conjunction with the conference\, Reproductive Justice: Advocates\, Academics\, Activists in Ann Arbor\, a Michigan Meeting.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Behind the Veil: Monoprint & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Casey Blanchard is a monoprint and mixed media artist living in Vermont. During her travels\, Blanchard considers no found object too grand or insignificant for expression in the printing medium. She finds the process of monoprinting to be engaging\, fluid\, unpredictable and fun. It is the mysteries behind the frayed veil\, the torn edge and the unspoken word that intrigue her. Blanchard hopes to wake up the viewer's perception\, encouraging in them reflection\, exploration and a connection to meaning. She uses organic materials in her artwork to help draw people to their natural\, healthy and whole state. Blanchard has been involved in arts in healthcare both nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Birdpants: Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Missy Orge creates work that is evocative of scientific curiosities and mounted butterflies\, with a humor that sneaks up and inspires a much closer look. Her current work focuses on birdpants ̶ tiny\, ornithologically correct pants that “could be for backyard visitors who are either fashion-forward or simply chilly in the Michigan winter.\" She employs traditional craftwork such as quilting\, embroidery and beading to produce highly detailed ̶ and decidedly non-traditional ̶ confections that encourage the viewer to consider the possibilities of enticing a chickadee to don a pair of slacks. Making Ann Arbor her home for more than 20 years\, she spends her spare time filling bird feeders in the hope that\, one day\, she can talk a songbird into modeling her creations.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Retaining Identity Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Matthaei Botanical Gardens is the venue for this special show of art created by older adults with memory loss and art students working in a variety of materials and media. The exhibit is based on the class created by U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design Associate Professor Anne Mondro. Partnering with the U-M Silver Club mild memory loss program club members\, including the newer Elderberry (barely elder) group\, students guided the members in art making. The theme of the semester was “Lessons Learned.” Students and club members shared experiences and expertise to create one-of-a-kind works of art. The final result is an art exhibition for the Club Members\, care partners and students. This traveling exhibition captures the spirit of creativity and embraces a shared experience. \n\nSponsored by U-M Geriatrics Center\, Silver Club Mild Memory Loss Programs\; U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\; U-M Alzheimer's Disease Center\; and U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum.

SUMMARY:Performance:Son Volt
DESCRIPTION:From his earliest recordings in the 1990s as a founding member of Uncle Tupelo\, Jay Farrar has been a keen observer of the American landscape: its beauties and its tragedies\, salvations and poisons. His almost two decades as the leader of Son Volt (as well as impressive turns as an acclaimed solo artist and collaborator) have only deepened and sharpened his gift for capturing the sights and sounds of his American journey–a gift which is in evidence once again on Son Volt’s sixth studio album: \"Honky Tonk.\" After all\, few places are as quintessentially American as the honky tonks where neon beckons to lonely and discontented souls with the promise that sorrows can be drowned in whiskey\, cigarettes\, and a timeless music of clear hard truths in which fiddle and pedal steel sweetly commiserate. The music on \"Honky Tonk\" draws on and refers to Merle Haggard and other masters of honky-tonk music while keeping the pure Son Volt sense of poetry. We at The Ark are proud to welcome Son Volt with their sixth album\, and their first since 2009–a profound reflection on classic country music and its resonance in American music.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Mediterraneo: Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Widely traveled artist Kay Cassill looks for the unusual and the most ordinary views to save in her sketchbook and camera. In her studio\, the sketches and photos give rise to watercolor paintings. Whitewashed walls clinging to a cliff and expressive views of a town as seen by a view of a single walkway are details in her paintings that help viewers feel that they were there. Cassill's postgraduate studies include the University of Iowa\, the Art Student's League in New York City and the Academe de la Grande in Chaumiere\, Paris. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York among others. She maintains a studio on Cape Cod as well as in Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Performance:Charlie Parr
DESCRIPTION:Many people play roots music\, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century\, Charlie's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity–they are authentic. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers\, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins\, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long scraggly hair\, father-time beard\, thrift-store workingman's flannel and jeans\, and emphatic\, throaty voice\, Charlie Parr looks and sounds like he would have fit right into Harry Smith's \"Anthology of American Folk Music.\" Drawing inspiration from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of his native Minnesota\, Charlie uses three instruments\, not including his own stomping foot. He got an 1890 banjo the first time he heard Dock Boggs. \"I don't do claw hammer\, I don't do Scruggs-style\, it's just a version of me trying to play like Dock Boggs\, I guess\,\" Charlie says. He has two Nationals\, a 12-string and a Resonator\, which became an obsession when he saw a picture of Son House playing it. Charlie Parr comes to Michigan with his 11th studio release\, \"Barnswallow.\"\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Imaginary Cities
DESCRIPTION:Imaginary Cities is the musical duo of Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas\, backed by three of Canada's top young band players. They were born in a Winnipeg club called The Cavern\, between sets. Marti had moved to Winnipeg from the small city of Brandon\, Manitoba\, and was playing in a Motown cover band called The Solutions\, for which Rusty did some mixing. Rusty decided to write a song for Marti to sing\, and in one all-night writing session came up with a triumphant and soulful beginning–the track “Say You.”It was a turning point. Marti’s stunning and original voice broke open a wealth of creativity between them\, and they began recording together. Their music bridges the gap between '60s Motown and contemporary keyboard rock–Marti's voice is heartwrenching at times\, with the frailty and wounding potential of shattered glass. Her voice is the thread that runs through the music\, and is layered masterfully with Rusty's instrumentation. Imaginary Cities has been declared the \"Best of What's Next\" by Paste\, and they are a very exciting new presence on the always fertile Winnipeg scene.

SUMMARY:Performance:Patterson Hood & The Downtown Rumblers
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, Drive-By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood was writing a book about a period of his life in the 1990s when \"My car got stolen\, our band's truck got stripped\, and I fell in love. I fell out with my family (who I was very\, very close to) and had my heart broken. I seriously pondered killing myself several times but instead wrote literally over 500 songs in a three-year period.\" The book stalled and then was partly and then totally (at least for now) replaced by new songs about that time. \"The songs begin in the period that the book was set in\, but don’t end there\, as they really just were the impetus for writing about the life I am living now and contrasting it with the troubled times of two decades ago\,\" Patterson says. I called it \"Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance\" and decided that spring to record it as a solo album. I could clearly hear in my head exactly how I wanted every song to sound and made a list of who I wanted to play on each one. It is in some ways the most personal album I’ve ever made.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:The Black Lillies
DESCRIPTION:The Vespers are one of those lucky young bands that have built an extensive underground following simply through word of mouth and heavy touring. The band is uniquely made up of two sibling duos\; the Cryar sisters and the Jones brothers. The four have distinguished their sound with an arsenal of acoustic instruments and harmonies only siblings can create. Their showmanship generates a roller coaster of sight\, sound\, emotion\, and inherent chemistry. The Vespers have independently released two full-length recordings and left a strong impression on both Americana and Christian audiences. Lead vocalists Callie (21) and Phoebe Cryar (19) were brought up in a musical family in Nashville\, honing their gifts as young kids singing background vocals on Music Row. It was a chance meeting at a campfire jam that brought the sisters an earthy grounding in brothers Bruno (20) and Taylor Jones (22)\, who were drawn to gritty Southern rock and the depth of their father’s record collection that included soul music from the likes of Stevie Wonder. This is a young band with a difference!
