SUMMARY:Performance:Bill Kirchen
DESCRIPTION:Bill Kirchen is an Ann Arbor-bred guitar god\, a Telecaster titan who whirls through a whole gallery of country and rock styles over the course of an evening. After a stint as lead guitarist with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen\, he's gone on to an acclaimed solo career\, and when he returns to town at the holidays his concerts turn into joyous reunions celebrating the glory days of the Ann Arbor honky-tonk scene\, with special guests often on hand. Some things haven't changed--the Austin American-Statesman recently praised his \"no-nonsense diesel guitar attack\, powered by great booming\, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease.\" But Bill has evolved into a very skillful rockabilly and country songwriter as well\, one who praised his trademark Telecaster guitar as \"born at the junction of form and function.\" His live shows are not to be missed!

Whitewashed walls clinging to a cliff and expressive views of a town as seen by a view of a single walkway are details in her paintings that help viewers feel that they were there. Cassill's postgraduate studies include the University of Iowa\, the Art Student's League in New York City and the Academe de la Grande in Chaumiere\, Paris. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York among others. She maintains a studio on Cape Cod as well as in Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Glass
DESCRIPTION:Bill Poceta is one of the leading studio glass artists working today. He creates one-of-a-kind blown glass vessels that resonate with both past and present. His work is influenced by various glass and ceramic”¨forms found in ancient cultures including Greek\, Roman and Egyptian. Being a former painter\, the surface of his work becomes a painting in glass. The reference for his surface designs can be traced to the Minoan culture\, 3000 B.C. Although his reference is ancient functional form\, his glass vessels are modern and architectural. Poceta’s museum quality work engages the viewer with beautiful forms and surface designs that can be traced to the late Bronze Age.

SUMMARY:Performance:John Fullbright
DESCRIPTION:John Fullbright\, says the Chicago Sun-Times\, “synthesizes the best songcraft from his home state–[Jimmy] Webb\, Leon Russell\, and\, by default\, Merle Haggard. ”¦ He’s got a tune called ”˜Forgotten Flowers\,’ a thoughtful country lament\, that Tom Waits and Randy Newman could fight over.\" In the intervening years\, John has opened for a host of folk and Americana names–including Jimmy Webb\, Joe Ely\, Kevin Welch\, Michael Fracasso\, and Steve Poltz–from Oklahoma to Europe and back. With the 2012 release of \"From The Ground Up\,\" John Fullbright\, still in his early 20s\, has become a topic of conversations about the best new artists in music today. Firmly rooted in a variety of musical styles\, he draws on what has come before\, but without imitation. Forget labels when you listen to John Fullbright. He is not folk\, not Americana and not pop\, but possibly the best fusion of them all.

SUMMARY:Performance:Makem & Spain Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Makem Brothers–Shane\, Conor and Rory–were born in Drogheda\, County Louth\, about an hour north of Dublin. They continue the lineage of one of Irish music's dynasties\, begun by their grandmother Sarah Makem\, who was sought after by song collectors for her store of traditional Irish songs. Their father is Tommy Makem\, the modern day Bard of Armagh. Now considered an icon\, he helped to bring Irish music out of the corner and into the international spotlight\, where it has remained ever since. The Spain Brothers\, too\, learned Irish songs at their father's knee. Mickey's rich\, baritone voice and Liam's mastery of stringed instruments quickly found a home when the Makems met the Spains and the brothers realized the power of their combined talents. Folk songs are engrained in both families\, and their songwriting contains the timeless qualities of folk classics: songs of the worker\, songs of the sea and Irish culture. They tell the tale of Ireland and its people–a culture that has undergone terrible strife\, but remains strong.\n\nTo purchase the dinner and show event package\, please call The Ark at 734-761-1800 or Conor O’Neill’s at 734-665-2968.\n

His work is influenced by various glass and ceramicӬforms found in ancient cultures including Greek\, Roman and Egyptian. SUMMARY:Performance:The Vespers
DESCRIPTION:The Vespers are one of those lucky young bands that have built an extensive underground following simply through word of mouth and heavy touring. The band is uniquely made up of two sibling duos\; the Cryar sisters and the Jones brothers. The four have distinguished their sound with an arsenal of acoustic instruments and harmonies only siblings can create. Their showmanship generates a roller coaster of sight\, sound\, emotion\, and inherent chemistry. The Vespers have independently released two full-length recordings and left a strong impression on both Americana and Christian audiences. Lead vocalists Callie (21) and Phoebe Cryar (19) were brought up in a musical family in Nashville\, honing their gifts as young kids singing background vocals on Music Row. It was a chance meeting at a campfire jam that brought the sisters an earthy grounding in brothers Bruno (20) and Taylor Jones (22)\, who were drawn to gritty Southern rock and the depth of their father’s record collection that included soul music from the likes of Stevie Wonder. This is a young band with a difference!\nThe Vespers are one of those lucky young bands that have built an extensive underground following simply through word of mouth and heavy touring.
