SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cassie & Maggie MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Fun\, exciting\, charming\, and talented\, Cassie and Maggie MacDonald are a dynamic Celtic sister duo who have emerged onto the music scene as performers to watch! Born in Halifax\, with strong roots in Antigonish\, Nova Scotia\, Cassie and Maggie have been wowing audiences across Canada with their unique blend of original and traditional Celtic music. Cassie's fiddle playing has been described as \"sweet and elegant with just the right amount of raw power\" while Maggie's piano playing has an irresistible drive that will leave your foot incapable of staying still and complements Cassie's playing perfectly. Together these delightful sisters bring more than your average fiddle and piano duo\; Cassie is an award winning highland and step dancer and also sings harmony for Maggie. In addition to her piano playing\, Maggie sings lead\, plays guitar\, banjo\, accordion and is also an accomplished step dancer. Their music fits together seamlessly encompassing various styles from Cape Breton reels to Antigonish polkas\, Quebecois fiddling and footwork to down-east standards. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Trinity\"
DESCRIPTION:“Trinity\,” curated by David Fischer\, is presented through Aug. 30 at Work”¢Detroit. A key exhibit theme is that some art connects powerfully with viewers emotionally and intellectually. Exhibiting artists were asked to explore the neural underpinnings of the connection between the art they create and the cognitive reception in those who encounter it. Viewers are asked\, when you view certain art\, does it affect you in an emotional way? Does some art mainly form an intellectual connection? Is there art that hits you in a visceral way\, either with revulsion or elation? All are asked to consider if art can elicit a reaction such as fight or flight\, and/or open an intellectual door\, resulting in new ideas and insights.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jake Shimabukuro
DESCRIPTION:When he was just four\, Hawaii-born Jake Shimabukuro (she-ma-BOO-koo-row) got his first ukulele lesson from his mother. \"When I played my first chord I was hooked\,\" says Jake\, \" I fell in love with the instrument\". That love grew into a deep passion to create and innovate. Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques\, Jake views the ukulele as an \"untapped source of music with unlimited potential.\" His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, bluegrass\, folk\, flamenco\, and rock\, Jake is a virtuoso on a mission to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of much more than the traditional Hawaiian music many associate it with. Think \"While My Guitar Gently Weeps.\" Bach. Japanese koto music. \"Thriller.\" And the list goes on and on. You won't believe it!

SUMMARY:Performance:Ben Daniels Band
DESCRIPTION:When Ben Daniels decided he was going to be a musician\, it was more than a career choice. A natural poet\, this young songwriter went to school on Bob Dylan\, Robert Johnson\, and Jack White\, among others. His lyrics speak directly to a younger generation that hears\, sees\, and thinks about the very things he’s writing. From their opening song to the finale of their set\, the Ben Daniels Band cuts through with their originality\, musicianship\, and a sound that spans blues\, reggae\, hip hop\, and even jazz. The son of actor Jeff Daniels\, Ben has quietly monitored what it takes to live life as an artist\, but beyond a passed-down talent\, the Ben Daniels Band believes in hard work\, perseverance\, and creatively challenging themselves and their audience with a sound that might be described as blues for today.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:American Mars
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in the late 1990s\, American Mars has been a musical anomaly in their hometown of Detroit. In a town often passed over by touring Americana acts and dominated by garage and punk\, the band has persevered for over a decade with its unique brand of atmospheric\, often confessional\, roots-influenced rock. The band features singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist Thomas Trimble\, multi-instrumentalist David Feeny\, bassist Garth Girard\, and drummer Alex Trajano. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Feeny has worked with Blanche\, Loretta Lynn\, and The White Stripes\, and the band toured with the Avett Brothers\, Chuck Prophet\, Langhorne Slim\, and The Rumble Strips. Last year American Mars released its fourth full-length album\, \"Chasing Vapors.\" Michigan's iSpy magazine praised American Mars as \"bracing\, entrancing\, and warming in their Western-wrung rock churn.\"
