SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Trinity\"
DESCRIPTION:“Trinity\,” curated by David Fischer\, is presented through Aug. 30 at Work”¢Detroit. A key exhibit theme is that some art connects powerfully with viewers emotionally and intellectually. Exhibiting artists were asked to explore the neural underpinnings of the connection between the art they create and the cognitive reception in those who encounter it. Viewers are asked\, when you view certain art\, does it affect you in an emotional way? Does some art mainly form an intellectual connection? Is there art that hits you in a visceral way\, either with revulsion or elation? All are asked to consider if art can elicit a reaction such as fight or flight\, and/or open an intellectual door\, resulting in new ideas and insights.

SUMMARY:Performance:American Mars
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in the late 1990s\, American Mars has been a musical anomaly in their hometown of Detroit. In a town often passed over by touring Americana acts and dominated by garage and punk\, the band has persevered for over a decade with its unique brand of atmospheric\, often confessional\, roots-influenced rock. The band features singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist Thomas Trimble\, multi-instrumentalist David Feeny\, bassist Garth Girard\, and drummer Alex Trajano. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Feeny has worked with Blanche\, Loretta Lynn\, and The White Stripes\, and the band toured with the Avett Brothers\, Chuck Prophet\, Langhorne Slim\, and The Rumble Strips. Last year American Mars released its fourth full-length album\, \"Chasing Vapors.\" Michigan's iSpy magazine praised American Mars as \"bracing\, entrancing\, and warming in their Western-wrung rock churn.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Nature’s Presence: Macro-Botanical Photography
DESCRIPTION:Robert W. Cleveland was an advertising photographer for 30 years after studying botany at Alma College and art at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His macro-botanical landscapes allow the eye to travel beneath the surface of reality into a realm of visual surprises of texture\, color\, light and design. Cleveland sees his photographs as metaphorical\, inviting viewers to experience the totality of nature's presence and the wonderment and tranquility it can evoke. Cleveland resides in Michigan\, but also enjoys exploring Hawaii\, Japan\, Europe\, the western United States as well as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Reconstructed Landscapes: Collage
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Cheryl Dawdy received her BA from U-M and then dabbled in different media (printmaking\, weaving\, natural dyes) until discovering collage. She adores it for its spontaneity and perfect expression of her \"make it up as you go along\" approach to life. Expectation invites disappointment\, she contends\, but an open mind offers unlimited potential. With that attitude\, she works with old postcards\, paper scraps\, and pieces of old wallpaper washed with acrylic paint\, creating landscape images some have described as \"wonderful little worlds you want to climb into\" and \"the stuff of dreams.\" Dawdy is also a singer for the Ann Arbor based musical performance group the Chenille Sisters.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Songs of the Birds: Airbrushed Acrylics
DESCRIPTION:Mixing science and art\, local artist Carol Hanna interprets the songs of birds using visual language that represents the color of the birds and the notes of their songs. The various stripe combinations of vibrating color in each painting represent each individual bird's measure of time or rhythm\, the pitch or frequency of its vibrations per second\, and the softness or loudness of its call. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. She received both a BFA and an MA from Eastern Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Performance:John Lee Hooker Jr
DESCRIPTION:Says John Lee Hooker Jr.: \"If I tried to fill my father's shoes\, I'd get cramps in my feet just trying to take one step.\" John Lee Hooker Jr. is no clone of the late\, great\, and lamented Detroit bluesman\, but instead he's something that's needed much more: an artist who carries forward the sardonic and funky sound and vision of Johnny \"Guitar\" Watson and other blues-based R&B artists of the 1970s and 1980s. John Jr. says that his sound is two parts R&B\, one part jazz and downhome blues. It all adds up to an evening of great urban sounds and an artist who\, whether he admits it or not\, has some of the charisma of his famous father. J. Poet of the All Music Guide says that the title track of John's latest\, \"All Hooked Up\,\" is \"replete with chattering rhythm guitar and propulsive horn stabs that'll make you break out in a cold sweat.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:Hana Malhas & The Overthinkers
DESCRIPTION:Hana (pronounced HENa) sometimes describes herself as a nomad\, but at the end of day is lucky to call two communities ”˜home’. She hails from Amman\, Jordan and has stitched Ann Arbor\, MI permanently into her heart seams. Malhas chases summer every year from one region to the other\, performing music whenever she gets the chance. On stages in both the U.S. and the Middle East\, she is a storyteller with an expressive vocal delivery. JO Magazine’s Nick Seeley describes her as “a songstress with a 10\,000-watt voice ”¦ it’s as if the music is taking over her body\, channeling through her lungs in a sort of velvet explosion ”¦ she has an infectious smile\, and a playful way of grooving onstage\, performing with either piano or guitar.” Hana’s latest EP release\, ”˜Hana Malhas & The Overthinkers\" (2012)\, features the song “How We Love\,\" nominated for the 12th annual Independent Music Award in the Folk/Singer-songwriter Song Category. The EP was co-produced by \"The Voice\" finalist Michelle Chamuel (Thick Glasses Music\, Ella Riot\, The Reverb Junkie)\, who added all vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements. Michigan synthesizer-oriented songwriter Chris Norman opens.
