SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Reconstructed Landscapes: Collage
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Cheryl Dawdy received her BA from U-M and then dabbled in different media (printmaking\, weaving\, natural dyes) until discovering collage. She adores it for its spontaneity and perfect expression of her \"make it up as you go along\" approach to life. Expectation invites disappointment\, she contends\, but an open mind offers unlimited potential. With that attitude\, she works with old postcards\, paper scraps\, and pieces of old wallpaper washed with acrylic paint\, creating landscape images some have described as \"wonderful little worlds you want to climb into\" and \"the stuff of dreams.\" Dawdy is also a singer for the Ann Arbor based musical performance group the Chenille Sisters.

Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Robert W. Cleveland was an advertising photographer for 30 years after studying botany at Alma College and art at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His macro-botanical landscapes allow the eye to travel beneath the surface of reality into a realm of visual surprises of texture\, color\, light and design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Songs of the Birds: Airbrushed Acrylics
DESCRIPTION:Mixing science and art\, local artist Carol Hanna interprets the songs of birds using visual language that represents the color of the birds and the notes of their songs. The various stripe combinations of vibrating color in each painting represent each individual bird's measure of time or rhythm\, the pitch or frequency of its vibrations per second\, and the softness or loudness of its call. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. She received both a BFA and an MA from Eastern Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Performance:the olllam
DESCRIPTION:Mysterious and masterful as the legendary ollam Irish bards from which they draw their name\, Belfast-born uilleann piper John McSherry and Detroit natives Tyler Duncan and Michael Shimmin wanted an ensemble that naturally represented their combined experience in a multiplicity of styles. McSherry\, one of the best uilleann pipers in the world and a founding member of legendary Irish group Lúnasa\, has been dubbed “a true master” by Irish Music Magazine. Duncan and Shimmin are part of the award-winning Irish-jazz crossover group Millish\, with Duncan doing double-duty in the dance-rock group My Dear Disco/Ella Riot. Simplicity is key for the olllam: they wanted their musical ideas to mature organically in a controlled environment\, rather than produce anything contrived or over-composed. It is their collective sense for arrangement–Duncan (uilleann pipes\, whistles\, guitar\, Rhodes) and Shimmin (drums and percussion) both hold degrees in jazz performance\, and the legendary McSherry (uilleann pipes and whistles) has performed and written with a wide variety of artists\, from Ornette Coleman to Nanci Griffith–that gives the music of the olllam its distinct style and form. It's very much like nothing you've ever heard before!

SUMMARY:Performance:Pearl and the Beard
DESCRIPTION:Students: Welcome to Ann Arbor and to The Ark\, a world-class club with music for all ages and tastes! Tonight's show is FREE with student ID. earl and the Beard is three voices\, one cello\, one guitar\, one glockenspiel\, one melodica\, several drums\, one accordion\, ninety-six teeth\, and one soul. Jocelyn Mackenzie\, Emily Hope Price\, and Jeremy Styles came together in New York. Their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft began to blossom\, and the band’s genre-bending and expectation-defying sound has since burst the trio out of the confines of the New York music scene. They’ve caught the attention of the Boston Globe\, Filter Magazine\, NPR\, and thousands of wildly dedicated fans both local and international. Pearl and the Beard’s live show is like nothing else you’ve ever experienced. The band captivates their audience from first note to last\, leaving fans and press alike completely engrossed in the world they’ve created. From subway platform to park to field to brightly lit venue stage\, Pearl and the Beard take over whatever space they occupy\, including the people occupying it with them. The Wall Street Journal described one impromptu show this way: “”¦as Pearl and the Beard joyfully belted ”¦ to a growing crowd on the [subway] platform”¦ commuters missed their trains to stay and listen\, unsure what was happening–only that it was a New York moment not to be missed.”\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: ...of Prosperity (sculpture\, 2011)\, Sophie-Velucia (mixed media)\,murals\, and prints
DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

SUMMARY:Performance:Musicology Lecture: Stefano Mengozzi (University of Michigan)
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Words in Ordinary Sounds: Revisiting Musical Humanism - The core characteristics of music of the Renaissance era are typically described in connection with Renaissance humanism understood as a secular phenomenon. This historiographic trope\, however\, fails to acknowledge the critical contribution of late-medieval religious culture to the formation of a musico-rhetorical awareness in the decades after 1400.

SUMMARY:Performance:Colin Hay
DESCRIPTION:Colin Hay is a master of the one-man show. Armed with an acoustic guitar\, his rich memorable voice\, and decades of road experience\, Hay is an entertainer in the true sense of the word. His show takes his audience on a journey through song and stories\, and that journey is an experience not to be missed. “Hay is funnier than most stand-up comedians\, so he’ll split your sides and then drop a heartbreaking ditty on you\,\" says the Houston Chronicle. The set list for his solo shows mixes tracks from his extensive catalogue as a solo songwriter\, new music\, and\, of course\, from his time with the monumentally successful Men At Work. “I’ve been singing\, playing guitar\, writing songs\, and trying to entertain people since I was 14 years old.” says Colin. “I feel\, at the present time\, that I may\, on any given night\, be getting the hang of it!” Colin Hay gave us a taste of what’s in store for us in an evening with him with his gig as master of ceremonies for both nights of the 2013 Ann Arbor Folk Festival. He brings new material to the Power Center on September 6 with his Finding My Dance Tour. Tickets on sale February 2. Presented by The Ark.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Nature’s Presence: Macro-Botanical Photography
Cleveland sees his photographs as metaphorical\, inviting viewers to experience the totality of nature's presence and the wonderment and tranquility it can evoke. Cleveland resides in Michigan\, but also enjoys exploring Hawaii\, Japan\, Europe\, the western United States as well as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

SUMMARY:Performance:Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics
DESCRIPTION:“It’s About Time\,” the full-length debut album from Atlanta’s Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics\, has quickly made waves around the globe since its recent September 2012 release. Billboard recently ranked the album in the top 30 on its emerging-artists Heatseeker charts\, a chart devoted to emerging artists\, and leadoff single “My Dear” was iTunes’ Single of the Week. Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics' roots are embedded in the rich sound and history of Georgia soul\, beginning with the early 1950s and 1960s R&B that became so well known around the world. Having performed countless gigs since 2005\, and with a slew of 45rpm singles already under their belts\, the band has already contributed heavily to the steadily increasing awareness of genuine rhythm and blues music that exists today. They pack clubs and festivals with their original brand of soul\, all of which is written and recorded in Atlanta. Over the last year\, Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics have been taking it worldwide\, and we're excited to welcome them for their Ark debut.
