SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Contemporary Forged Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Fehrenbach believes that jewelry should be fun\, bold and exciting. She plays texture against mirror finishes and loves to include movement and dimension to create bold\, yet feminine jewelry. She includes Tahitian pearls\, natural stones and materials\, custom glass\, enameling and raku pottery in her designs. Exhibiting her work both nationally and internationally\, Fehrenbach also teaches near her studio in southeastern Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Nature’s Presence: Macro-Botanical Photography
DESCRIPTION:Robert W. Cleveland was an advertising photographer for 30 years after studying botany at Alma College and art at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His macro-botanical landscapes allow the eye to travel beneath the surface of reality into a realm of visual surprises of texture\, color\, light and design. Cleveland sees his photographs as metaphorical\, inviting viewers to experience the totality of nature's presence and the wonderment and tranquility it can evoke. Cleveland resides in Michigan\, but also enjoys exploring Hawaii\, Japan\, Europe\, the western United States as well as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Reconstructed Landscapes: Collage
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Cheryl Dawdy received her BA from U-M and then dabbled in different media (printmaking\, weaving\, natural dyes) until discovering collage. She adores it for its spontaneity and perfect expression of her \"make it up as you go along\" approach to life. Expectation invites disappointment\, she contends\, but an open mind offers unlimited potential. With that attitude\, she works with old postcards\, paper scraps\, and pieces of old wallpaper washed with acrylic paint\, creating landscape images some have described as \"wonderful little worlds you want to climb into\" and \"the stuff of dreams.\" Dawdy is also a singer for the Ann Arbor based musical performance group the Chenille Sisters.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Songs of the Birds: Airbrushed Acrylics
DESCRIPTION:Mixing science and art\, local artist Carol Hanna interprets the songs of birds using visual language that represents the color of the birds and the notes of their songs. The various stripe combinations of vibrating color in each painting represent each individual bird's measure of time or rhythm\, the pitch or frequency of its vibrations per second\, and the softness or loudness of its call. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. She received both a BFA and an MA from Eastern Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: ...of Prosperity (sculpture\, 2011)\, Sophie-Velucia (mixed media)\,murals\, and prints
DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:No animal has evolved independent of symbiotic microbes. Instead\, each has coevolved with suites of microbes\, most of whom are beneficial to their hosts. It is well-known that microbes are critical contributors to animal health\, nutrition and development\, but it also becoming increasingly clear that they contribute to animal behavior as well. Specifically\, they can facilitate animals’ feeding\, antipredator\, reproductive and communicative behaviors. A direct way that symbiotic microbes might contribute to their hosts’ communication phenotypes is by increasing the diversity and efficacy of the chemical signals available to them. The symbiotic hypothesis for chemical signaling suggests that variation in animal chemical signals is often due to underlying variation in animals’ odor-producing microbial communities. Although historically we were unable to evaluate this hypothesis because we lacked tools to effectively characterize animals’ symbiotic microbial communities\, next-generation sequencing and its associated bioinformatics approaches are rectifying the situation. I will review our research evaluating the hypothesis in hyena models\, and introduce our new songbird and digital organism models as well.

DESCRIPTION:The legendary John Denver was a brilliant songwriter and a truly gifted performer. And his music lives on! Ted Vigil closely resembles John both physically and musically\, and\, with the help of guitarist Steve Weisberg\, he's carrying on the tradition. Ted is not an impersonator\, but rather sings a tribute to John Denver. Ted had been writing\, recording and performing his original compositions\, and he won a national Talent Quest title in 2006. After this win\, Ted began to plan a John Denver tribute show. Ted Vigil's Rocky Mountain High is\, indeed\, a high! His audiences warm to him instantly as they once again enjoy the music the world grew to love\; they walk out of his concerts feeling refreshed and joyous from the experience.

SUMMARY:Performance:Chris Smither w/sg Peter Mulvey
DESCRIPTION:Having distilled his own signature sound of blues and folk for over 40 years\, Chris Smither is truly an American original. A profound songwriter\, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues\, American folk music\, and modern poets and philosophers. From his early days as a New Orleans transplant in the Boston folk scene\, through his wilderness years\, to his reemergence in the 1990s as one of America’s most distinctive acoustic performers\, Chris Smither continues to hone his distinctive sound. He has always traveled his own road\, eschewing sophisticated studio tricks and staying true to his musical vision. He has developed and maintained loyal friendships over the years with kindred-spirited musicians like Bonnie Raitt and the late Stephen Bruton\, while at the same time throughout his career being inspired by and inspiring to today's new generation of musicians. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work\, gravelly voice\, and songwriting. In the words of the New York Times:\" With a weary\, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style\, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.\" Tonight's special guest is Peter Mulvey\, a Wisconsin singer-songwriter and an Ark favorite in his own right\, whose guitar carries a dazzling blend of rock\, folk\, and funk styles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: The wait seems to go on forever (mural\, 2008)

SUMMARY:Performance:The David Mayfield Parade
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve seen David Mayfield perform with The Avett Brothers\, Mumford & Sons\, or Jessica Lea Mayfield\, or at Bonnaroo\, you’ve caught the charisma\, the heart\, and the comedy\, and it’s likely you’ll come back for more! With eclectic\, cinematic songs that stir up images of the old West and urban cityscapes\, David's new release\, \"Good Man Down\,\" feels like a game changer for a singer-songwriter\, band leader\, and Grammy nominated producer who stepped out of the sideman shadows with his 2011 solo debut “The Parade.” He likens “Good Man Down” to “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Like “Raiders of the Lost Ark\,” his first album was lighthearted and fun with nods to the past. His second is darker\, creepier\, more bizarre and outrageous. With a successful crowdfunding campaign raising expectations\, David felt it was time to take chances musically and delve into more adventurous production while tapping into his bluegrass roots. David's live shows are lively and sometimes comical. He grew up playing bass and touring with his family’s bluegrass band. As a teenager he established himself as a hot picker collecting national awards for his dexterity on guitar and mandolin. Conscious of not just being a musician\, but an entertainer–something his father instilled in him in the family band–he certainly makes an impression live. But it’s the strength of his songwriting and musicianship\, combined with that charm and personality\, that keep audiences coming back again and again.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Why Contested Spaces?”
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Fatma Müge Göçek\, Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies and CMENAS Associate Director.\nThe analysis of the way space is envisioned and employed in particular societies provides significant insight into the social construction of meaning. And such meaning construction often varies across time as different social groups contest the use of space. Since the end of the Cold War and especially during the last decade\, Middle Eastern and North African states and societies have witnessed and experienced many such contestations\, ranging from the most obvious political as evinced by the Arab Spring to the less visible including the environment\, religious-secular divide\, urban construction\, art and music to everyday practices.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Knowledge Seekers Series: Power of Myth in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Class meets Mondays\, September 16 - October 21. \nWe will examine the views of Joseph Campbell\, an anthropologist\, and Elizabeth Vandiver\, a classicist. The class will involve a combination of \"The Power of Myth\"\, conversations with Bill Moyers (PBS DVD Series)\; and a Teaching Company DVD course\, \"Classical Mythology\"\, from Elizabeth Vandiver. The DVD viewings will be integrated with discussion. Campbell combines insights of psychology with comparative mythology to explain the power of myth\; Vandiver gives insight into the key characters and stories of Greek and Roman mythology to explain its power. In exploring their ideas\, we learn how myths affect our own lives. Dr. Richard Galant studied classical Greek and Latin for many years.

SUMMARY:Performance:Portland Cello Project featuring sg Jolie Holland
DESCRIPTION:Since the group's inception in late 2007\, the Portland Cello Project (or\, PCP\, as their fans affectionately call them)\, has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances\, everywhere from Prairie Home Companion to that punk rock club in the part of town your grandma warns you not to go to after dark. The group has built a reputation by mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. No two shows are alike\, with a repertoire now numbering over 800 pieces of music you wouldn't normally hear coming out of a cello. The Cello Project's mission is threefold: \n1: To bring the cello to places you wouldn't normally hear it. (Everywhere from nightclubs to symphony halls\, from sports bars to loading docks\, from libraries to halftime at Portland Trailblazers games ...) \n2: To play music on the cello you wouldn't normally hear played on the instrument. (Everything from Bach to Kanye to Pantera ...) \n3: To build bridges across all musical communities by bringing a diverse assortment of musical collaborators on stage with them. (Everyone from the Dandy Warhols to Peter Yarrow to Ben Sollee to Mirah to Garrison Keillor ...) \nTonight The Portland Cello Project appears with a special guest\, Americana songwriter and Ark favorite Jolie Holland.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Human Rights Inititative Lecture: \"Making Human Rights a Reality\"
DESCRIPTION:Making Human Rights a Reality takes a fresh look at why it’s been so hard for international law to have much impact in parts of the world where human rights are most at risk.\n\nEmilie Hafner-Burton argues that more progress is possible if human rights promoters work strategically with the group of states that have dedicated resources to human rights protection. These human rights “stewards” can focus their resources on places where the tangible benefits to human rights are greatest. Success will require setting priorities as well as engaging local stakeholders such as nongovernmental organizations and national human rights institutions.\n\nTo date\, promoters of international human rights law have relied too heavily on setting universal goals and procedures and not enough on assessing what actually works and setting priorities. Hafner-Burton illustrates how\, with a different strategy\, human rights stewards can make international law more effective and also safeguard human rights for more of the world population.\n\nEmilie Hafner-Burton is an associate professor\, School of International Relations and Pacific Studies\, and Director\, Laboratory on International Law and Regulation\, University of California-San Diego.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Scholarly Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Amita Baviskar\, Associate Professor of Sociology\, Institute of Economic Growth\n\nIn the last three decades\, although India has witnessed radical shifts in the modes of producing and consuming food\, this has stimulated surprisingly little analytical attention. The changing political economy of food production and consumption and its role in reshaping social identities and agrarian environments remains remarkably understudied. This lecture outlines the preliminary contours of a project that attempts to analyze some of these shifts through a selective discussion of changing food practices in post-Independence western India. It delineates the widening circuits of food as a commodity form within the home and outside\, spanned by the growth of processed foods and practices of 'eating out'. It outlines the changing signification of food practices for different social groups\, and considers some potential health and ecological implications arising from the transformation. It makes the case for focused attention on food as a way of understanding social change in India.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Battlefield Band
DESCRIPTION:Over 30 years and through constant infusions of fresh talent\, the Battlefield Band has brought the whole world of traditional music in step with its motto of \"Forward with Scotland's Past.\" The Battlefield Band -- the name comes from the band's hometown of Battlefield\, Scotland -- renews the tradition of Scottish music\, mixing the age-old sounds of the bagpipes\, cittern\, and fiddle with the guitar\, accordion\, and bouzouki. This band is an institution yet never rests on its laurels\, preferring to write new songs and do new arrangements of traditional material instead of revisiting old favorites. The Battlefield Band comes to Michigan with a new album\, \"Room Enough for All\,\" which Celtic Connections calls \"technically flawless and fabulously entertaining.\n
