SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Nature’s Presence: Macro-Botanical Photography
DESCRIPTION:Robert W. Cleveland was an advertising photographer for 30 years after studying botany at Alma College and art at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His macro-botanical landscapes allow the eye to travel beneath the surface of reality into a realm of visual surprises of texture\, color\, light and design. Cleveland sees his photographs as metaphorical\, inviting viewers to experience the totality of nature's presence and the wonderment and tranquility it can evoke. Cleveland resides in Michigan\, but also enjoys exploring Hawaii\, Japan\, Europe\, the western United States as well as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Reconstructed Landscapes: Collage
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Cheryl Dawdy received her BA from U-M and then dabbled in different media (printmaking\, weaving\, natural dyes) until discovering collage. She adores it for its spontaneity and perfect expression of her \"make it up as you go along\" approach to life. Expectation invites disappointment\, she contends\, but an open mind offers unlimited potential. With that attitude\, she works with old postcards\, paper scraps\, and pieces of old wallpaper washed with acrylic paint\, creating landscape images some have described as \"wonderful little worlds you want to climb into\" and \"the stuff of dreams.\" Dawdy is also a singer for the Ann Arbor based musical performance group the Chenille Sisters.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Songs of the Birds: Airbrushed Acrylics
DESCRIPTION:Mixing science and art\, local artist Carol Hanna interprets the songs of birds using visual language that represents the color of the birds and the notes of their songs. The various stripe combinations of vibrating color in each painting represent each individual bird's measure of time or rhythm\, the pitch or frequency of its vibrations per second\, and the softness or loudness of its call. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. She received both a BFA and an MA from Eastern Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. \"Damn the Spratleys\, Full Speed Ahead: Southeast Asia in a Multinodal World\"
DESCRIPTION:Bracketing the current fixation with the South China Sea\, the diplomatic future of Southeast Asia to 2030 will be shaped by general parameters of international developments. General trends of globalization\, constrained sovereignty\, and demographic revolution are likely to provide a landscape in which interactions will be more intense but not likely to change the basic international matrix. Although the US and China will almost certainly be the primary nodes of the world order\, their differences and the diffusion of global contacts create a situation fundamentally different from Cold War bipolarity. In a multinodal world\, Southeast Asia’s diplomatic alternatives will be affected by the degree of rivalry between the primary nodes\, but the choices will be more interesting than which camp to join.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Ford School of Public Policy\n\nBackground paper available upon request: emails to cseas@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ardis Publishers and the Russian Literary Canon
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan’s Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies (CREES) and Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) are pleased to host a symposium\, “Ann Arbor in Russian Literature: Revisiting the Carl R. Proffer and Ardis Legacies.”\n\nThe symposium will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the birth of U-M Professor Carl R. Proffer (1938-84)\, an outstanding scholar renowned for his books on Gogol and Nabokov. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Scholarly Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Nusrat Chowdhury\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology\, Amherst College\n\nThis discussion focuses on the popular preoccupation with money\, in the larger context of national politics\, that was documented during Nusrat Chowdhury's fieldwork in 2007-2008 in Phulbari\, Bangladesh. It focuses on money\, which\, as a medium of political communication\, distilled a set of popular discourses about governmental corruption and the unequal exchange relations that underline a global culture of natural resource extraction. The professor's research aimed at exploring the tense yet mutually illuminating relationship between energy crisis and political crisis. She describes encounters from her field site to theorize what she calls the revealing powers of money and draws out its political\, economic\, aesthetic\, and moral aspects by analyzing various narratives of exchange that were documented. In this scene of crisis\, ordinary people appropriated money’s status as a powerful medium of communication to articulate their visions of political authority\, morality\, and just exchange relations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Drawing Boundaries: How National History-writing in China\, Japan\, and Korea Influences Contemporary Interstate Relations
DESCRIPTION:China’s relations with the two Koreas and Japan are roiled by conflicting claims on disputed islands and territories and angry exchanges over contradictory national histories. Today’s quarrels are the legacy of national histories developed during the process of nation-building in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Public outbursts during the 2004 quarrel between the two Koreas and China over “ownership” of Koguryŏ/Gaogouli and repeated Chinese and Korean attacks on Japanese history textbooks illustrate the nationalist heat that disputes can generate. Sparked by states’ pursuit of domestic agendas\, these nationalist incidents often produce negative international repercussions. Recently East Asian historians have tried to reconcile such controversies through sustained dialogue and the production of collaborative histories. The talk will conclude with speculation on whether national narratives will give way in the future to a world or global history.

SUMMARY:Performance:Derek Fawcett (Down the Line) w/Dolly Varden (duo)
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we're bringing the best of the Windy City to Michigan for your listening pleasure!\n\nThe Chicago roots band Dolly Varden (the name is taken from that of a kind of trout in the Pacific Northwest\, which in turn was named after a character in a Charles Dickens novel) has been around for 19 years and released six albums. Audiences have been wowed by the warm\, sublime vocal interplay of Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen\, who have been married for most of that period. Steve's songwriting is emotionally potent\, intelligent\, and undeniably melodic. Dolly Varden appears tonight as a duo.\n\nThe album \"Though The Winter Clothes\" is Derek Fawcett’s solo debut\, but he's no stranger to Ark audiences. His powerful\, thoughtful singing and skin-splitting djembe playing have been lighting up stages across the country for more than a decade in Chicago's beloved acoustic quartet Down The Line. As a soloist\, Fawcett’s music is informed by his tenure with Down The Line\, and further influenced by Tom Petty\, John Mayer\, James Taylor\, Bon Iver\, and Fountains Of Wayne. He has switched from djembe to keys\, but apparently hits just as hard: At a recent show at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles\, he broke the piano mid-set. Though the aggression on the piano may occasionally channel the angst of Ben Folds and Billy Joel\, similarly\, many of his songs tell thoughtful\, poignant love stories.

SUMMARY:Performance:Band of Heathens
DESCRIPTION:The Band of Heathens came together in Austin in 2006\, in a process as natural and organic as the music they create. Songwriters Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist joined a weekly multi-artist bill at the famed Momo's club and began to share the stage and perform each other's songs. Word of their shows grew\, and after a newspaper somehow mistakenly dubbed them the Heathens\, they had a name for their new band. Songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard\, a skilled Texas talent-spotter\, signed on to produce their debut studio album\, and Jim Fusilli of the Wall Street Journal wrote that The Band of Heathens played the best set he heard in five nights at the SXSW festival in Austin. We believe it–their set at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival a few years back was a sensation! The Band of Heathens is one of the great live acts on the Americana circuit right now\, and their studio recordings\, fine as they are\, don't do them justice. They mix a good greasy Texas sound with lyrics that stick with you and a handful of jams to get things really cooking.

SUMMARY:Performance:California Guitar Trio
DESCRIPTION:The California Guitar Trio plays progressive rock\, surf music\, jazz\, blues\, country\, probably the definitive version of \"Bohemian Rhapsody\,\" and some traditional North African and Asian sounds for good measure. And did you hear them at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival a few years ago\, playing the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony\, minus the voices but with pretty much everything else intact? Their latest album is \"Masterworks\,\" an all-classical release featuring music by Bach\, Barber\, Beethoven\, Schubert\, Rossini\, Vivaldi\, and Arvo Pärt. Like most Californians\, the three members of the California Guitar Trio all come from someplace else: Bert Lams is Belgian\, Hideyo Moriya is from Japan (where the band has a strong following)\, and Paul Richards is from Salt Lake City. The CGT is a melding of diverse talents unlike anything you've heard before\, and one you can't afford to miss!

Hanna has exhibited both locally and nationally\, and her works are in permanent collections at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the C. S. Mott Children's and Women's Hospital. She received both a BFA and an MA from Eastern Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: The wait seems to go on forever (mural\, 2008)
DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"The War of Graffiti\": Contested Spaces in Beirut
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Melanie Schulze Tanielian\, Assistant Professor\, Department of History\, University of Michigan.\nGraffiti as an public marker of dissent\, social criticism and expression of political and sectarian ideologies has a long history in Beirut. It became a particularly potent marker of contested spaces during the fifteen year-long civil war (1975-1990)\, which the journalist Maria Chakhtoura has coined \"la Guerre des Graffiti.\" During the civil war\, inhabitants of the city only glanced at writings\, stencils and images on a wall and it would be obvious which militia or political party was in control of that particular street\, block\, or neighborhood of the city. In this lecture\, I will explore the public discourse that found it's expression through \"street art\" during the war which was marked by fragmentation and division and explore its changing meaning in the post-war period.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Update on the Great Lakes Water Wars
DESCRIPTION:Update on the Great Lakes Water Wars\n\nGerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, Annenberg Auditorium (1120)\n735 S. State Street\, Ann Arbor 48109-3091\n4pm-5:30pm\n\nFree and Open to the Public\n\nPeter Annin\, Managing Director\, Environmental Change Initiative at University of Notre Dame\n\n\nAbout the lecture:\nThis presentation delves into the long history of political maneuvers and water diversion schemes that have proposed sending Great Lakes water everywhere from Akron to Arizona. Through the prism of the past\, this talk analyzes the future of Great Lakes water diversion schemes\, which now rests on the Great Lakes Compact released by the eight Great Lakes governors in December 2005. The Compact\, which lays out how much water can be taken and who can take it\, was adopted by the eight state legislatures in the Great Lakes region as well as the U.S. Congress before eventually being signed by the president in 2008. A similar agreement was adopted by the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The talk analyzes several noteworthy Great Lakes diversions that already exist\, and sheds light on potential water diversions of the future\, including the water diversion application submitted by Waukesha\, Wisconsin in 2010. A decision on the Waukesha water diversion application is expected in 2013.\n\nAbout the presenter:\nA veteran conflict and environmental journalist\, Peter Annin spent more than a decade reporting on a wide variety of issues for Newsweek. For many years he specialized in coverage of domestic terrorism and the radical right\, including the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City and the Branch Davidian standoff outside Waco\, Texas. He has spent many years writing about the environment as well\, including droughts in the Southwest\, hurricanes in the Southeast\, wind power on the Great Plains\, forest fires in the mountain West\, recovery efforts on the Great Lakes\, and the causes and consequences of the \"dead zone\" in the Gulf of Mexico. In November of 2010\, Annin was named managing director of the University of Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative\, which tackles the interrelated problems of invasive species\, land use and climate change\, focusing on their synergistic impacts on water quality and water quantity. Prior to joining Notre Dame\, Annin worked for a decade as Associate Director of the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources\, a nonpartisan national nonprofit that organizes educational fellowships for mid-career environmental journalists. In September 2006 he published his first book\, The Great Lakes Water Wars\, which has been called the definitive work on the Great Lakes water diversion controversy. In 2007 the book received the Great Lakes Book Award for nonfiction. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin\, and a master's in international affairs from Columbia University.\n\nThis event is supported by the generosity of the J. Rubin Family Foundation\n\nSponsored by: \nUniversity of Michigan Department of Political Science\nUniversity of Michigan Center for Local\, State\, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP)

SUMMARY:Performance:Billy Joe Shaver
DESCRIPTION:A rough-hewn discovery of Kris Kristofferson in the early 1970s\, Billy Joe Shaver was simultaneously the most down-to-earth and the most poetically ambitious of country music's \"outlaws.\" He wrote most of the songs on Waylon Jennings's \"Honky Tonk Heroes\,\" which Rolling Stone magazine once called the greatest country album ever recorded\, and ever since then he's been creating powerful\, honest music in a gritty but poetic style that's all his own. Who else would have referred in song to Jesus Christ as \"a compound country kind of guy\"? In recent years\, Shaver has suffered the death of his mother\, wife\, and son. The music this original honky-tonk hero makes today carries a wisdom born of tragedy and faith. Special guests are The Honeycutters\, The Honeycutters are\, the musical collaboration of singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt and guitarist/producer Peter James. While their sound has drawn comparisons to such artists as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings\, this pair creates a unique brand of Americana music that is comfortingly familiar while being entirely original.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CCS Noon Lecture \"Successful Aging in Transitional China: Accomplishment and Challenges\"
DESCRIPTION:Successful aging is a very relevant topic for China\, given that it has the largest elderly population in the world and one of the fastest rates of population aging in human history. In this talk\, Professor Li will address three questions. First\, has there been more success in successful aging since China began the economic reform in the late 1970s? Second\, who among those living in contemporary China are more and less likely to age successfully and why? Third\, how would the trend of successful aging in China be affected by rapid industrialization and urbanization? She will review the literature\, especially empirical studies\, to draw answers to the questions. Challenges to realizing successful aging in China will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ecologist Steward Pickett Delivers JJR Lecture Sept. 24
DESCRIPTION:Steward Pickett\, an expert in the ecology of plants\, landscapes\, and urban systems\, delivers the 2013 JJR Lecture as part of the School of Natural Resources & Environment's Dean's Speaker Series. The talk is titled \"Changing Urban Realities and the Evolution of Urban Ecological Science.\"\n\nAbstract: Although much is made of the proportion of humanity that now lives in cities as a justification for urban ecological research\, the changing nature of urbanization itself presents new opportunities for understanding human ecosystems. This presentation will present a new framework for urban systems in the global context\, emphasizing global teleconnections\, and contrasts in livelihood\, lifestyle\, and the local nature of specific urban ecosystems. Urban transformations in this complex context will be illustrated by trends in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and example data on the watershed function will be presented. The desire of jurisdictions in the metropolitan Baltimore region to become more sustainable drives new research efforts focusing on urban metacommunity structure\, urban streams as an extension of the river continuum concept\, and new approaches to locational choice of households. The Baltimore case is put in the context of other global urban transformations as a way to advance urban ecological theory.\n\nBiography: Steward Pickett\, a Distinguished Senior Scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies\, in Millbrook\, New York\, is an expert in the ecology of plants\, landscapes\, and urban systems. He was awarded the PhD by the University of Illinois in 1977. He directs the Baltimore Ecosystem Study\, Long-Term Ecological Research program\, and co-directs the Urban Sustainability Research Coordination Network. His research focuses on the ecological structure of urban areas and the temporal dynamics of vegetation\, which has taken him to the primary forests of western Pennsylvania\, the post-agricultural oldfields of New Jersey\, and the riparian woodlands and savannas of Kruger National Park\, South Africa. He has edited or written books on ecological heterogeneity\, humans as components of ecosystems\, conservation\, the linkage of ecology and urban design\, the philosophy of ecology\, and ecological ethics. He has served as President of the Ecological Society of America\, as well has having been that organization’s inaugural Vice President for Science.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:China through the Prism of the Democratic ӬArt of Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Speaker's abstract: During the course of a single year\, I traveled to the People’s Republic of China on three separate occasions\, my first interactions with this extraordinary society and culture. In China\, the future may seem to be already in the present\, and yet the impetus that led to my visits is somewhat of an anomaly by our present-day standards: study of the traditional art of relief block printing\, an art still practiced by many contemporary artists today. Block printing is one of many inventions China gave the world\, a creative process that sprang off many other discoveries and arguably impacted the course of human history. In the context of my research about current art in China\, I will examine the work of several contemporary Chinese printmakers who either\, by working traditionally\, and/or using discipline’s traditions as a point of departure\, both contribute to the vitality of art making on a global scale.\n\nAbout the speaker: Using representations of familiar imagery\, the work of Endi Poskovic proposes a range of eventualities. Hybridized narratives translate to unexpected scenarios\, evoking place and time and exploring ideas of displacement\, memory\, and reconciliation. A recipient of Guggenheim\, Rockefeller\, Pollock-Krasner\, Camargo\, McDowell\, Flemish Ministry Fellowships\, and many others\, Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway and the US. He has exhibited extensively\, representing the US in all major international print biennials and triennials. His work can be found at Harvard University Fogg Museum\, Philadelphia Museum of Art and China Academy of Art. Poskovic is a Professor of Art and Design at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Kirill Kalinin\, doctoral candidate\, political science\, U-M.\n\nHow accurately do election polls report individual voting preferences? Can election polls help us detect and possibly deter election fraud in authoritarian regimes? This talk will focus on theoretical aspects and effects of social desirability bias on election fraud in authoritarian regimes. Using data from survey experiments conducted before and after Russia’s 2012 presidential election and the results of alternative techniques used by a national pollster\, Kalinin will demonstrate the presence of significant social desirability effects in Russian public opinion polls that inflated both electoral ratings of Vladimir Putin and voter turnout. In turn\, these findings raise issues about the quality of survey research in authoritarian regimes and the possible interconnection of social desirability effects and election fraud.\n\nKirill Kalinin is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan and a student in the Program in Survey Methodology at the Institute for Social Research. Before enrolling at U-M in 2008\, he was a Fulbright and Carnegie Visiting Scholar at ISR’s Center for Political Studies. In 2008-09\, he was an Emerging Democracy Fellow at the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies. While conducting fieldwork in Russia in 2012\, he was a visiting instructor at the New Economic School in Moscow and European University at St. Petersburg. His major research interests are election forensic analysis and political methodology.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Thoreau\, Emerson\, Whitman and the Poetry of Democracy

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Choice of Heterosexuality: The Porn Industry in France (1975-2010)
DESCRIPTION:In the middle of the 1970s\, the porn industry emerged in France\, tolerated by a liberal government and regulated by new legal provisions. Since then\, French pornographers have presented themselves as fantasy entrepreneurs: in their view\, their professional role is to capture and respond to consumers’ various desires. This largely male-dominated trade has a gendered and sexual organization: women are excluded from the market\, and there is a clear split in the industry between gay and straight porn. Although pornographers present this divide as being obvious\, Dr. Trachman argues that it must be seen as a choice. As “lesbian” scenes in straight porn show\, this exclusion concerns only male homosexuality. While pornographers highlight the distance between their own sexuality and the fantasies they put on screen\, gay scenes remain an exception.

SUMMARY:Performance:Vasen
DESCRIPTION:Initially some traditionalists in the Swedish folk music community showed some resistance to Väsen. While nyckelharpist Olov Johannson and violist Mikael Marin were playing fairly straightforward folk duets\, Roger's Tallroth's 12-string guitar definitely provided a different twist on Swedish traditional music. Yet it's exactly the guitar chordings and rhythms that also attracted an entirely new audience\, and the band's popularity gradually grew\, along with their international reputation. They’ve appeared on \"A Prairie Home Companion\,\" won the Swedish equivalent of a Grammy\, worked with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger\, as well as with the Kronos Quartet\, and recorded 15 albums. And you might want to come just for the unique experience of hearing the nyckelharpa\, a unique Swedish fusion of fiddle and hurdy-gurdy. Väsen is a Swedish word with many meanings: spirit\, noise\, a living being\, essence are among the most prominent. It was originally meant to just be an album title\, but soon people were calling to book the band \"Väsen\,\" and the name stuck.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:In the face of rapid environmental change and given the inherently long time scales of tree population dynamics\, it seems inescapable that forests are increasingly in disequilibrium\, lagging in their responses to anthropogenic changes in the physical and biotic environment. Anthropogenic impacts on forests of the eastern U.S. include (1) climate change\, (2) changes in logging regimes\, (3) the litany of introduced pests and pathogens that are profoundly changing eastern U.S. forests\, and (4) changes in the atmospheric environment\, particularly rates of nitrogen (N) deposition and CO2 concentrations. My research uses a spatially-explicit\, individual-based model of tree population dynamics (SORTIE-ND\, www.sortie-nd.org) that is linked to continental-scale forest inventory data maintained by the U.S. Forest Service (http://www.fia.fs.fed.us/). Preliminary results indicate that the direct effects of climate change on the distribution and abundance of tree species in the eastern US will be relatively small over the next 50-100 years\, in part because climate impacts on sapling and adult tree growth and survival are relatively small. Climate impacts on seedling recruitment and survival appear to be much stronger\, but the current occupants of a site have both a numerical and competitive advantage over new colonists. This provides a great deal of inertia to forest structure and composition\, and analyses with the model suggest that this inertia would remain even in the absence of dispersal limitation. Tree species in the region show a wide range of responses to current rates of N deposition\, and in many of the species the magnitude of expected response to anticipated future reductions in N deposition is of the same magnitude as the expected response to anticipated future temperature increases. Both historical and current harvest regimes are driving successional dynamics that can be expected to result in large changes in both forest structure and composition at a regional scale. Those successional dynamics are promoting the abundance of two late successional species – eastern hemlock and beech – that are currently threatened by introduced pests or pathogens. Processes that supplement the natural mortality rates of adult trees\, whether through harvesting or the actions of introduced pests or pathogens\, may accelerate the effects of climate change by opening the canopy and allowing new tree recruitment. Models provide the only real tool to integrate these disparate effects\, and analyses with SORTIE-ND have all the hallmarks of complex system behavior\, including initial condition dependence but predictable general features of system recovery following perturbation.

SUMMARY:Other:Self Esteem and Relationships\; A Relationship Enhancement Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays- Relationship Enhancement Series. Dealing with difficult people in your life can be extremely stressful. Unfortunately\, few people ever learn the high-level skills needed to manage difficult relationships. This series will help you do just that.\n\nSelf-Esteem and Relationships. Few things in your life can have a greater positive impact than learning to feel good about you. How we feel about ourselves can impact our relationships with friends\, family\, and significant others. In this workshop you will explore some of the earlier-life experiences that may have formed your current \"core beliefs\" about yourself. We will talk about how these beliefs influence your life\, relationships\, and behaviors currently. Lastly\, you will learn strategies for weakening some of the negative self-beliefs that hold you back in your life.\n\n\n\nEach Thursday from 4:15-5:30 p.m. you and other interested students will meet with a counselor and focus on one of the most frequent concerns of U-M students. These are the very issues that U-M students have told us are the most common issues they deal with every day. The counselor will share some helpful information\, talk about strategies and clinical resources\, and she or he will also make time for you to share a little bit about your concerns (if you wish to do so). \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago Vienna Teng came to southeastern Michigan for the first time–and we fell in love. This artist has a real bond with Michigan audiences\, and now it turns out the love affair between Vienna Teng and Michigan is mutual: she recently earned her master's in sustainable enterprise at the U-M and announced plans to settle in Detroit. Her music has continued to develop during this time\, and her live shows are spellbinding. Three years after stepping away from a full-time music career to attend graduate school\, Vienna returns to the studio and to the road with a new sound\, a new producer\, and a new approach to songwriting and recording. What’s emerging from that process is her most uptempo\, pop-influenced album yet–and full of surprises\, even to its creators. “Nothing about this is familiar!\" Vienna explains. Some of the new songs started life as \"fragments of melody set to a beat I recorded on my phone.\" It was\, she says\, \"sort of terrifying to have so little figured out\" as she started recording\, \"but it also opens up a lot of possibilities.” Tonight's opener is Alex Wong\, a Brooklyn-based producer\, writer\, and performer whose signature sonic style resonates in all he creates–from cinematic pop soundscapes to electronic-tinged theater scores to his honest\, direct songwriting. Alex has been a key Vienna Teng collaborator along the way!
