Through the prism of the past\, this talk analyzes the future of Great Lakes water diversion schemes\, which now rests on the Great Lakes Compact released by the eight Great Lakes governors in December 2005. The Compact\, which lays out how much water can be taken and who can take it\, was adopted by the eight state legislatures in the Great Lakes region as well as the U.S. Congress before eventually being signed by the president in 2008. A similar agreement was adopted by the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The talk analyzes several noteworthy Great Lakes diversions that already exist\, and sheds light on potential water diversions of the future\, including the water diversion application submitted by Waukesha\, Wisconsin in 2010. A decision on the Waukesha water diversion application is expected in 2013.\n\nAbout the presenter:\nA veteran conflict and environmental journalist\, Peter Annin spent more than a decade reporting on a wide variety of issues for Newsweek. For many years he specialized in coverage of domestic terrorism and the radical right\, including the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City and the Branch Davidian standoff outside Waco\, Texas. He has spent many years writing about the environment as well\, including droughts in the Southwest\, hurricanes in the Southeast\, wind power on the Great Plains\, forest fires in the mountain West\, recovery efforts on the Great Lakes\, and the causes and consequences of the \"dead zone\" in the Gulf of Mexico. In November of 2010\, Annin was named managing director of the University of Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative\, which tackles the interrelated problems of invasive species\, land use and climate change\, focusing on their synergistic impacts on water quality and water quantity. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. The desire of jurisdictions in the metropolitan Baltimore region to become more sustainable drives new research efforts focusing on urban metacommunity structure\, urban streams as an extension of the river continuum concept\, and new approaches to locational choice of households. The Baltimore case is put in the context of other global urban transformations as a way to advance urban ecological theory.\n\nBiography: Steward Pickett\, a Distinguished Senior Scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies\, in Millbrook\, New York\, is an expert in the ecology of plants\, landscapes\, and urban systems. He was awarded the PhD by the University of Illinois in 1977. He directs the Baltimore Ecosystem Study\, Long-Term Ecological Research program\, and co-directs the Urban Sustainability Research Coordination Network. His research focuses on the ecological structure of urban areas and the temporal dynamics of vegetation\, which has taken him to the primary forests of western Pennsylvania\, the post-agricultural oldfields of New Jersey\, and the riparian woodlands and savannas of Kruger National Park\, South Africa. In China\, the future may seem to be already in the present\, and yet the impetus that led to my visits is somewhat of an anomaly by our present-day standards: study of the traditional art of relief block printing\, an art still practiced by many contemporary artists today. Block printing is one of many inventions China gave the world\, a creative process that sprang off many other discoveries and arguably impacted the course of human history. In the context of my research about current art in China\, I will examine the work of several contemporary Chinese printmakers who either\, by working traditionally\, and/or using discipline’s traditions as a point of departure\, both contribute to the vitality of art making on a global scale.\n\nAbout the speaker: Using representations of familiar imagery\, the work of Endi Poskovic proposes a range of eventualities. Hybridized narratives translate to unexpected scenarios\, evoking place and time and exploring ideas of displacement\, memory\, and reconciliation. Can election polls help us detect and possibly deter election fraud in authoritarian regimes? This talk will focus on theoretical aspects and effects of social desirability bias on election fraud in authoritarian regimes. Using data from survey experiments conducted before and after Russia’s 2012 presidential election and the results of alternative techniques used by a national pollster\, Kalinin will demonstrate the presence of significant social desirability effects in Russian public opinion polls that inflated both electoral ratings of Vladimir Putin and voter turnout. In turn\, these findings raise issues about the quality of survey research in authoritarian regimes and the possible interconnection of social desirability effects and election fraud.\n\nKirill Kalinin is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan and a student in the Program in Survey Methodology at the Institute for Social Research. Since then\, French pornographers have presented themselves as fantasy entrepreneurs: in their view\, their professional role is to capture and respond to consumers’ various desires. This largely male-dominated trade has a gendered and sexual organization: women are excluded from the market\, and there is a clear split in the industry between gay and straight porn. Although pornographers present this divide as being obvious\, Dr. Trachman argues that it must be seen as a choice. As “lesbian” scenes in straight porn show\, this exclusion concerns only male homosexuality. Anthropogenic impacts on forests of the eastern U.S. include (1) climate change\, (2) changes in logging regimes\, (3) the litany of introduced pests and pathogens that are profoundly changing eastern U.S. forests\, and (4) changes in the atmospheric environment\, particularly rates of nitrogen (N) deposition and CO2 concentrations. My research uses a spatially-explicit\, individual-based model of tree population dynamics (SORTIE-ND\, www.sortie-nd.org) that is linked to continental-scale forest inventory data maintained by the U.S. Forest Service (http://www.fia.fs.fed.us/). Preliminary results indicate that the direct effects of climate change on the distribution and abundance of tree species in the eastern US will be relatively small over the next 50-100 years\, in part because climate impacts on sapling and adult tree growth and survival are relatively small. Climate impacts on seedling recruitment and survival appear to be much stronger\, but the current occupants of a site have both a numerical and competitive advantage over new colonists. This provides a great deal of inertia to forest structure and composition\, and analyses with the model suggest that this inertia would remain even in the absence of dispersal limitation. Tree species in the region show a wide range of responses to current rates of N deposition\, and in many of the species the magnitude of expected response to anticipated future reductions in N deposition is of the same magnitude as the expected response to anticipated future temperature increases. Both historical and current harvest regimes are driving successional dynamics that can be expected to result in large changes in both forest structure and composition at a regional scale. Those successional dynamics are promoting the abundance of two late successional species – eastern hemlock and beech – that are currently threatened by introduced pests or pathogens. Processes that supplement the natural mortality rates of adult trees\, whether through harvesting or the actions of introduced pests or pathogens\, may accelerate the effects of climate change by opening the canopy and allowing new tree recruitment. Models provide the only real tool to integrate these disparate effects\, and analyses with SORTIE-ND have all the hallmarks of complex system behavior\, including initial condition dependence but predictable general features of system recovery following perturbation. Hanna works with the U-M Biology Department to match each bird's exact color. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation.
