SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Pierced Porcelain
DESCRIPTION:In this current body of work\, Kate Tremel is interested in taking a fresh look at traditional pottery forms within a functional context. She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things\, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Poodle Stories: Whiteware Clay
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Lilli Blackburn creates functional and sculptural works in clay. In this body of work\, poodles are represented in various dilemmas of life. The functional white ware is lighthearted\, so simple tasks such as eating and drinking can become playful. Each piece is individually handcrafted with feedback from her standard parti (two-colored) poodle\, who loves to crack a joke. Blackburn earned a BFA from Ohio State University\, and her studio is Grins Clay.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Stitched Impressions: Art Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Textile artist Carole Harris is a Detroit native. Her mother introduced her to needle arts at an early age. After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State\, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern\, often drawing inspiration from the color\, energy\, movement\, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz\, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement\, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally\, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Storytelling: Fabric Appliqué
DESCRIPTION:Chris Roberts-Antieau’s work is about the mysterious origin of joy and the wonder of childhood. To create her witty fabric paintings\, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens\, flannels\, cottons\, calicos\, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand\, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful\, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work\, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country\, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: The wait seems to go on forever (mural\, 2008)
DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“And it was just right”: Food and cooking in children’s literature
DESCRIPTION:These folk tales\, adventure stories\, cookbooks\, advertising pamphlets\, and didactic novels from the U-M Library's Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive and Children’s Literature Collection use images and descriptions of food to amuse\, instruct\, admonish\, reassure\, tempt\, warn\, and raise that “eew-gross” reaction so loved by children of a certain age.\n\nStories for children are full of food\, from Little Red Riding Hood’s basket of goodies to Harry Potter’s earwax-flavored jelly beans. Since at least the mid-19th century children have been a distinct audience for cookbooks and other food-related publications. This exhibit brings together materials from two fascinating strengths of the library: Children’s Literature and American Culinary History. Come and explore the roles food plays in children’s literature\, and the ways books on food address children.\n\nExhibit curated by William Gosling\, University Librarian Emeritus\, and JJ Jacobson\, curator of the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, from items in the Special Collections Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chinese Now : Contemporary Portraits
DESCRIPTION:The Confucius Institute and Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan host an art exhibition \"Chinese Now: Contemporary Portraits\" presented by 31 faculty members from the School of Arts\, Renmin University of China. Professor TANG Keyang (Associate Professor\, School of Arts\, \nRenmin University of China) succinctly explains what this exhibition tries to accomplish. \"In this exhibition\, the people of China are brought to life in the vision of the artists. Freed from the limitations of a single concept\, style\, image\, or form\, the only thing the Chinese people represented here have in common is a disregard for the stereotypes long associated with them. The concern of this exhibition is in establishing the cultural sensibilities of contemporary China\, just as different peoples\, at different times\, have engaged art as a vital social response to the movement of history. As Professor Leo Ou-fan Lee has noted\, engagement with these cultural sensibilities allows an audience to grasp “certain core feelings\, the stuff which moves us” so inherent in the drama of life. In presenting this exhibition\, the hope is that an understanding of these core feelings will form the basis for meaningful intercultural dialogue.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:John McCutcheon's Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:John McCutcheon's art grew out of his absolute mastery of American traditional music and instruments. He's a legend of the guitar\, the hammered dulcimer\, and several other instruments\, and he's a prolific songwriter. The result is a body of classic American song\, rooted in the best our musical tradition has to offer. John McCutcheon is a voice for peace\, a community organizer\, a writer\, a literacy campaigner\, and a performer who has packed concert halls on four continents. The Washington Post calls John's concerts \"little feats of magic\,\" and as a storyteller he's been compared with Garrison Keillor–and\, even better than that\, Will Rogers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Creating an Inexpensive Open Source Book Scanner
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to hear Mechanical Engineering 450 students discuss their Linear Book Scanner project\, describe the improved design\, and demo their prototype.\n\nThis fall\, the University of Michigan Library collaborated with ME450 students to create a prototype linear scanner based on openly-available designs by Google. The goal of the Linear Book Scanner is to create a new type of automatic page-turning book scanner with a simple\, low-cost design. In particular\, students worked to improve the Google designs by modifying the scanner to accommodate books of different sizes\, reducing noise to an acceptable level\, and improving image quality to conform to industry standards.\n\nThe prototype scanner created by the students cost approximately $1500\, making it an exciting advancement towards the creation of an affordable and scalable book scanner for use in the cultural heritage community.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PICS Fellows Lecture
DESCRIPTION:French national and media discourse on the Muslim veil has used abstract citizenship and “neutral” secularism as a way to discipline its racial and religious minorities and to refuse minority rights claims. Media coverage has constructed the racialized stereotype of the unassimilable “Arabo-Muslim” and of the Muslim veil-wearing woman as figures of threat because of their inability or refusal to accept French values. In contrast\, the coverage has marked acceptable Muslim citizens as assimilated and “disenculturated” – referring to the disenchantment and rationality that is a necessary condition for French cultural citizenship and of the conception of the citizen as a modern\, enlightened liberal subject. As a result of these representations\, the “Good” Muslims serve to portray the French nation as non-racist and inclusive of its minorities\, while the “Bad” Muslims are seen as inviting sanction. Overall\, through the use of essentializing representations of Muslim men as oppressive because they force the voile upon women\, and Muslim women as either oppressed victims or willing allies of Islamist movements infiltrating France\, the dangerous “Arabo-Muslim” is discursively produced in order to be disciplined by the law in a manner that allowed the state to appear not racist\, but protective and defensive of secularism\, civic values and women’s rights.\nShazia Iftkhar is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. She received a Ph.D. from the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, a Master of Journalism from Temple University\, and an A.B. from Dartmouth College. Her research interests lie in the areas of race/ethnicity\, gender and religion in relation to nation\, citizenship and the public sphere. Current research critically examines media coverage of the national debate on the Muslim veil in France\, studying the emergent narratives on French identity\, secularism\, Islam\, race and citizenship in news coverage and ethnographic data. She is currently working on a book manuscript based on this research.\n\nAs fellow\, Professor Iftkhar developed and taught the course Women & Islam: The Politics of Representation in Fall 2013.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Global Water Challenges and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Glen Daigger will present. He is the CH2M HILL Senior Vice President and Chief Water Technology Officer and the President of the International Water Association. He is a recognized expert in wastewater treatment\, especially the use of biological processes. His nine patents for wastewater treatment have helped establish the nation’s wastewater treatment standards\, and as the author or co-author of more than 100 technical papers\, four books\, and several technical manuals\, he has contributed to advancing practice within the wastewater profession.\n\nAbstract\n\nSignificant changes in water management are required to avoid the consequences of a “business as usual” approach\, which will result in about half of the population of planet earth experiencing water stress within the next decade or so. Alternate approaches to water management are available\, but they will require significant changes in how water is managed\, both locally and globally.

DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa.

SUMMARY:Performance:Hoots & Hellmouth w/sg Holy Ghost Tent Revival
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia's Hoots and Hellmouth are the duo of singer-songwriters Sean Hoots and Andrew Gray (he's Hellmouth)\, augmented by other musicians as needed. They call their sound \"new music for old souls\,\" and it has elements of alt-country\, classic folk\, punk\, and jam-band freedom. This band blends the tangled roots of American music in a fierce and fiery alchemy\, with soulful three-part harmonies mixed with stringed things and foot stomps\, building a synergy that bursts from the stage. It’s city and country. It’s rock and soul. It's bleeding\, sweating\, crying\, rejoicing”¦It’s alive! The Kalamazoo Gazette came pretty close to the Hoots and Hellmouth experience with the description of the duo \"singing from the pits of themselves and throwing themselves into it all.\" Hoots and Hellmouth have been local favorites ever since their roof-raising appearances at the 2010 Ann Arbor Folk Festival. They're joined tonight by special guests Holy Ghost Tent Revival–this North Carolina band will fill you with the spirit of musical passion and energy. Chris Hillman from The Flying Burrito Brothers exclaimed\, “Man! You guys have really got something\,” as he watched from offstage at the Loveless Café in Nashville.

SUMMARY:Performance:Lucy Kaplansky
DESCRIPTION:The daughter of the famed Polish-Canadian mathematician Irving Kaplansky (who once wrote a song based on the first 14 digits of pi that his daughter has been known to perform)\, Lucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago bars. Then\, barely out of high school\, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers–Suzanne Vega\, John Gorka\, Bill Morrissey\, Cliff Eberhardt\, and others–where she fit right in. She's a singer-songwriter with an extraordinary feel for the range of human emotion. Lucy puts her own spin on contemporary songwriter folk with warm\, powerful vocals and guitar playing that draws guitar gods (or geeks) to talk shop with her. Lucy Kaplansky\, says the Boston Globe\, \"is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern city folk.\" We haven't seen Lucy's full show at The Ark for several years\, so it's time to come out and see what this wonderful songwriter has been up to and working through.
