SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: Plainly Spoken
DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Grand Rapid Padnos Lecture- Just Who Are the Israelites: The Archaeology of Ethnogenesis
DESCRIPTION:Who were the Israelites and where did they come from? After 150 years of Biblical Archaeology\, new data and approaches are yielding important insights on ethnogenesis\, the emergence and development of new peoples\, including the Israelites. Were Israelites outsiders to ancient Canaan as the Hebrew Bible suggests? Or were they insiders\, developing out of Bronze Age society alongside many new groups including the Philistines\, Phoenicians\, Aramaeans\, the Ammonites\, Edomites\, Moabites\, Arabs and others? In this talk\, Dr. Dessel will explore this pivotal era in Jewish history and how archaeologists and historians understand ethnogenesis and the origins of the ancient Israelites. Our interest in these longstanding questions may also tell us more about ourselves than the ancient Israelites.

SUMMARY:Performance:Equality Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:Artists from Southeast MI are fighting to make marriage equality a reality in Michigan. In partnership with the Jim Toy Community Center\, the artists have given their time and talent to raise critically needed funds for the DeBoer-Rowse Family to legally co-adopt their three children. A benefit for the Michigan Marriage Challenge\, presented by the Jim Toy Community Center will be held on Sunday\, February 23\, 2014 at 1pm at The ARK\, 316 S. Main\, Ann Arbor\, MI\, 734-761-1800. Tickets: $250 Benefactor - reserved seating house floor front & center\, $100 Supporters - reserved seating house center and $25 General Admission.\n\nAll of the artists and the attorneys are donating their time to help raise critically needed funds. This benefit is an opportunity for supporters of marriage equality to help make it a reality. Emceed by U of M Professor Holly Hughes\, the evening will feature artists such as singer songwriter Vienna Teng (viennateng.com/)\, folk duo Nervous But Excited in a greatly anticipated re-union (nervousbutexcited.com)\, the Dueling Divas Callie McKee and Robby Griswold of Arbor Opera Theatre\, and many others.\n\nHelp the DeBoer-Rowse Family: Hazel Park lesbian couple April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse are suing the state of Michigan for the right to legally wed and thereby co-adopt their three kids. Their case represents a direct\, effective and rapid means of securing marriage equality in Michigan.\n\nThe state licensed the two nurses as a couple to serve as foster parents of their three special needs children\, but Michigan law allows only legally married couples to jointly adopt children. This civil right\, afforded all others in Michigan\, is not available to the DeBoer-Rowse family due to Michigan’s constitutional ban on the state recognizing marriages of same-gender couples. Because they are prohibited by law to adopt jointly\, Rowse adopted their two sons\, and DeBoer their daughter.\n\nThe law firm Nessel and Kessel is arguing the DeBoer-Rowse family’s case pro bono\; however\, bringing in expert witnesses to demonstrate to the court that same-gender couples are fit parents is expensive. The lawyers estimate the witnesses and other legal expenses could cost a combined quarter of a million dollars at a minimum. Federal Judge Bernard A. Friedman\, of the Eastern District of Michigan\, will begin hearing evidence in DeBoer v. Snyder in late February.

SUMMARY:Performance:Solas
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia Inquirer has praised Solas for \"mind-blowing Irish folk music\, maybe the world's best.\" This Irish and Irish-American Celtic supergroup has not only captured the hearts and ears of fans in Ireland and all around the globe with their blend of Celtic traditional music\, folk and country melodies\, bluesy\, sometimes jazz-inspired improvisations\, and global rhythms. Their fans beyond the Celtic sphere include hip-hop producer Timbaland\, who sampled their music on his megahit \"All Y'all.\" Solas came together in 1996 with no plans to tour or record\, but popular demand led to international appearances and a series of acclaimed recordings. Solas comes to Michigan with a new release\, \"Shamrock City\,\" which is part of a film project about the history of Butte\, Montana. Come see the band the Boston Globe (which ought to know) called \"the finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Should academics get down and dirty with YouTube?
DESCRIPTION:Is there a role for academic institutions in online informal education? Andrew D. Maynard\, Director of the Risk Science Center in the U-M School of Public Health\, talks about the growing trend in online video being used as an informal education source by individuals. \n\nBeyond the publicly accessible Massive Open Online Courses offered by academic institutions\, the most highly viewed educational content is generated by content creators without strong academic affiliations. As online informal education video content grows in sophistication and impact\, should academic institutions be front and center of this new wave of education? And if so\, how should they be engaging?\n\nMLibrary Emergent Research Series events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus\, particularly as they relate to library services and support\, opportunities for collaboration\, data management and preservation\, and beyond.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Yahoo! Seminar Series: James G. Shanahan
DESCRIPTION:Since 1994\, online advertising has grown to a $113 billion industry worldwide and has been pivotal to the success of the mobile and World Wide Web. This success has arisen largely from the transformation of the advertising industry from a low-tech\, human intensive\, “Mad Men” way of doing work (which was commonplace for much of the 20th century and the early days of online advertising) to highly programmatic\, optimized\, mathematical\, computer-centric\, and performance-driven processes that form the backbone of many current online advertising systems. \n\nTo date\, digital advertising can be divided into four generations: Generation One borrowed from offline techniques (human sales force) and pricing models (cost per thousand impressions\, CPM)\; Generation Two leveraged automatic pricing models (via online auctions and cost per click\, CPC\, pricing models) and automatic targeting\; Generation Three has focused on personalization (behavioral targeting\, ad exchanges and real-time bidding for each impression) and on new personal media channels such as mobile and social media\; and Generation Four is focusing on native and more engaging advertising experiences.\n\nThis talk\, while reviewing the four generations of online advertising\, will provide a clear and detailed overview of the business models and technologies that are transforming the field of online advertising primarily from statistical machine learning and information science perspectives in both the guaranteed and spot markets (e.g.\, real-time bidding). Open research questions will also be described. \n\nDr. James G. Shanahan is VP of Data Science and Chief Scientist at NativeX\, a mobile ad network.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:SNRE Art & Environment Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:Artist biography:\n\nKatie St. Clair is currently in her final year as an MFA candidate at the Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. This year she was awarded a Smucker”¢Wagstaff Scholarship to embark on an ambitious 800+ mile bike ride from Ann Arbor to Marquette Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. For two weeks\, she cycled along county roads\, cow pastures\, corn crops\, and Michigan’s beautiful coast\, collecting imagery and material for upcoming paintings inspired by growth and decay in the natural world. Exploring has always been a priority in St. Clair’s art practice\, traveling to countries in Southeast Asia\, South America\, and Europe. In 2006 she graduated Magna Cum Laude with her BFA in painting from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She was granted artist residencies at Parsons\, The New School of Design\, Munich Exchange Program\, and the Vermont Studio Program. She has held solo exhibitions at NCRC Gallery in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Global Lead Gallery in Cincinnati\, Ohio. Her numerous group exhibitions include shows at Arts Space Beijing\, China\, and at Broadway Gallery in New York City. She is currently represented by Kuaba Gallery in Indianapolis\, which will be hosting her in a solo show in 2014.\nArtist statement:\n\nMy large scale landscapes weave layers of paint into fragmented photo collages of highly detailed images of nature. I gather these images from my natural surroundings and\, most recently\, from roadside locations that challenge my assumptions about where nature is most vibrantly manifested.\n\nDrainage ditches\, land between gas stations and street medians are places that breed uncertainty. They are largely ignored boundary lands\, gathering the detritus of our culture into a tentative wildness. Unless we have a reason to be in these places\, they are glanced over\, forgotten\, lost\, or just never found. Children see the possibility of these places\; in adulthood it takes open eyes\, imagination and a willingness to explore that is rare. Every day I expand my awareness of this territory and submerge myself in experiences that inform my thinking.\n\nIn the details of my work there is a meeting place of constructed human spaces and natural environments. I complicate the interaction by cutting into the images\, so it takes longer to read them. A collage is a layering of experiences\, most of which are felt and not seen in their absence. Images that hold tense conversations\, textures that rub shoulders\, and the weaving composition that holds these complexities while also guiding direction. These choices create an atmosphere\, in spatial form rather than linear understanding.\n\nI believe that displacement shows us things we may have overlooked. The title Second/Nature derives from my process of giving these images a new space to be investigated. When we become aware of all the subtleties around us\, we open our senses to a new world and ways of seeing.\n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Apache Relay / The Lonely Wild
DESCRIPTION:Tonight's show presents a pair of much buzzed-about–and buzzworthy!–new bands. Rarely does a young band emerge with a combination of skills\, talents\, and vision fully developed. But the L.A.-based quintet The Lonely Wild is that true gem whose writing and arranging talents are surpassed only by its members’ ability to work seamlessly as a single dynamic voice. Picking up solid momentum from their critically acclaimed debut EP\, \"Dead End\,\" The Lonely Wild quickly made a name for themselves in and around greater L.A.\, opening for John Doe\, Damien Rice\, Phosphorescent\, and Laura Marling. The Lonely Wild comes to Michigan with its debut full-length album\, \"The Sun As It Comes\,\" a recording that reflects upon the times in which we live while taking the listener on a sonic journey of impressive heights. The Apache Relay was formed by chance in a Nashville college dorm when Michael Ford Jr. (vocals\, bass) met Mike Harris (guitar\, vocals). Ford Jr. happened to be looking for some musicians to help perform his own music live when he heard about Harris’ newly formed band\, The Apache Relay. Ford Jr. hired the trio\, which also included Brett Moore (keys\, guitar\, mandolin) and Kellen Wenrich (fiddle)\, to back him at a show\, and it was immediately evident that the four musicians had a unique chemistry. Since the release of their sophomore album\, \"American Nomad\,\" two years ago\, The Apache Relay\, who round out their live show with the addition of drummer Aaron Early\, have toured nonstop and gained a large cadre of fans across North America. “They've got kind of an Arcade Fire meets boys raised on gospel and Bruce Springsteen approach to what they do\, and they're called The Apache Relay. They're a fantastic live band\,\" raves The Huffington Post.

SUMMARY:Other:CCS Noon Lecture Series: “Use the Bottom to Squeeze the Middle: How to Understand Social Policy in Contemporary China\"
DESCRIPTION:\"This talk examines how the Chinese government has developed strategies to enhance its capacity to govern despite the lack of democratic mechanisms that provide feedback and bottom-up evaluation. In the arena of labor and social policies\, the government has combined high standards with extensive publicity and education\, which encourages social mobilization around newly granted rights and entitlements. A key question in the future is whether the government can manage the rising expectations that accompany social mobilization.\n\nMary Gallagher is an associate professor of political science at the University of Michigan where she is also the director of the Center for Chinese Studies. She is also a faculty associate at the Center for Comparative Political Studies at the Institute for Social Research. From 2012-2013\, she was a visiting scholar at the Koguan Law School at Shanghai Jiaotong University.\n\nProfessor Gallagher received her Ph.D in politics in 2001 from Princeton University and her B.A. from Smith College in 1991. She was a foreign student in China in 1989 at Nanjing University. She also taught at the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing from 1996-1997. She was a Fulbright Research Scholar from 2003 to 2004 at East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai\, China where she worked on her current project\, The Rule of Law in China: If They Build It\, Who Will Come? This project examines the legal mobilization of Chinese workers. It was funded by the Fulbright Association and the National Science Foundation. \n\nHer book Contagious Capitalism: Globalization and the Politics of Labor in China was published by Princeton University Press in 2005. She has published articles in World Politics\, Law and Society Review\, Studies in Comparative International Development\, and Asian Survey. She is the co-editor of several new volumes on Chinese law and politics\, including Chinese Justice: Civil Dispute Resolution in Contemporary China (Cambridge 2011) and From Iron Rice Bowl to Informalization: Markets\, Workers\, and the State in a Changing China (Cornell 2011).\n\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Strange Career of the Filipino 'National'
DESCRIPTION:Join Rick Baldoz for a talk examining the complex relationship between Filipinos and the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Baldoz will explore how American practices of domestic racial exclusion repeatedly collided with the geo-political imperatives of U.S. imperial expansion producing unexpected outcomes and consequences on both sides of the Philippine-American divide. The talk will focus on what Filipino immigration to the United States reveals about the racialized economic and political foundations of American society. The politically ambiguous status of Filipinos\, who were classified as U.S nationals\, confounded immigration authorities\, resulting in ever-changing rationales about how to determine and police racial and national boundaries. Baldoz argues that debates about the socio-legal status of Filipinos offer insights into the contingent and contested nature of America’s ascriptive hierarchies and the interlocking politics of immigration\, race\, and empire.\n\nFree and open to the public. Refreshments provided.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next CBSSM seminar:\n \nIntroductory Workshop on Intervention Mapping\n \nFraukje Mevissen\, PhD\nCBSSM Visiting Scholar\nAssistant Professor\, Applied Psychology\, Maastricht University\, the Netherlands\n\nWednesday\, February 26\, 2014\n3:00-4:00 pm\nLocation\nRoom 266C\, Building 16\nNorth Campus Research Complex (NCRC)\n2800 Plymouth Road\n\nSummary: Intervention Mapping (IM) is a protocol for developing effective behavior change interventions. IM is not a new theory or model\; it is an additional tool\, like a process management protocol\, for the planning and development of health promotion interventions. It maps the path from recognition of a need or problem to the identification of a solution.\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Mevissen will describe the IM steps based on work she did developing sexual health programs for adolescents. To get the most out of this workshop\, it would be helpful if some of you could e-mail her (fmevisse@med.umich.edu) the ”˜problems’ you work on. She could then use some of these scenarios during the workshop as examples on how to analyze and explore this problem.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Goitse
DESCRIPTION:Goitse (pronounced gwi-cha) is a Donegal Irish word meaning \"come here.\" This band\, whose members met as students at the University of Limerick\, is rooted firmly within Irish tradition\, but each member has achieved an individual fusion of traditional and contemporary styles. All are well known by themselves\; fiddler Aine McGeeney has toured with Lord of the Dance\, and Philadelphia-born multi-instrumentalist Conal O'Kane has studied and worked on both sides of the Atlantic. Put it all together with a big rhythmic orientation and the biggest jolt of youthful energy Irish music has seen in quite some time\, and you've got all the ingredients for a winter evening of Celtic chemistry. The band's recent album\, \"Transformed\,\" \"sees Goitse transfer from the periphery to the big League\,\" says Irish Music Magazine. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series - Nikkei and the Construction of a Multicultural Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Today\, Brazil has the largest community of Japanese descent in the world while Japan currently is home to about 200\,000 Brazilians. Cities like São Paulo claim huge populations of Syrian\, Lebanese\, Italian\, and Portuguese descent. The millions of immigrants who settled in Brazil helped to create ideas about ethnicity\, foreignness and national identity\, all within a historical context of slavery\, that are often distinct from other countries in the Americas. This presentation will analyze the role of Japanese-Brazilians in creating new forms of multiculturalism in both Brazil and Japan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Masculinizing American Jewish Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:Philanthropy has long been a cornerstone of Jewish identity in the United States. By the nineteenth century\, charitable activity had increasingly become identified as the province of women–both Jewish and non-Jewish–because they were considered to possess an innate nurturing character particularly suited to benevolence. But in the late nineteenth and throughout the twentieth century\, as Jewish organizations became larger and more sophisticated\, Jewish men began to redefine communal philanthropy in ways that distanced it from female models of benevolence. Stressing organization and efficiency and emphasizing philanthropy as an expression of civic duty\, Jewish men reimagined Jewish philanthropic activity as a masculine endeavor.

SUMMARY:Other:Self Esteem and Relationships\; A Relationship Enhancement Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays- Relationship Enhancement Series. Dealing with difficult people in your life can be extremely stressful. Unfortunately\, few people ever learn the high-level skills needed to manage difficult relationships. This series will help you do just that.\n\nSelf-Esteem and Relationships. Few things in your life can have a greater positive impact than learning to feel good about you. How we feel about ourselves can impact our relationships with friends\, family\, and significant others. In this workshop you will explore some of the earlier-life experiences that may have formed your current \"core beliefs\" about yourself. We will talk about how these beliefs influence your life\, relationships\, and behaviors currently. Lastly\, you will learn strategies for weakening some of the negative self-beliefs that hold you back in your life.\n\n\n\nEach Thursday from 4:15-5:30 p.m. you and other interested students will meet with a counselor and focus on one of the most frequent concerns of U-M students. These are the very issues that U-M students have told us are the most common issues they deal with every day. The counselor will share some helpful information\, talk about strategies and clinical resources\, and she or he will also make time for you to share a little bit about your concerns (if you wish to do so). \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An open discussion on leadership
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public.\nReception to follow.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nIn more than forty years of distinguished public service Ambassador (ret) John Negroponte\, a career American diplomat\, held such positions as US Ambassador to Honduras\, Mexico\, the Philippines\, the United Nations\, and Iraq. He served twice on the US National Security Council staff\, first as director for Vietnam in the Nixon Administration and then as Deputy National Security Advisor under President Reagan. He also held a cabinet level position as the first Director of National Intelligence under President George W. Bush. More recently\, he served as Deputy Secretary of State. Earlier in his career Ambassador Negroponte also served in Hong Kong\, Vietnam\, France\, Ecuador and Greece. He is currently Vice Chairman of McLarty Associates in Washington\, DC and a Distinguished Fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University\, where he lectures in international affairs and national security.\n\n\nAbout the event\n\nThe focus of this Ford Policy Union will be on leadership and on specific examples from Ambassador Negroponte's experience. What makes a good leader and how do leaders make decisions? How do leaders handle dissent and divergent views? What lessons have we learned from successes and failures in national security and foreign policy? Has traditional American diplomacy been sidelined because of dominance by our military in post-Cold War conflict and in counter-terrorism since 9/11? The Ford School's Professor of International Policy and Practice\, Ambassador (ret) Melvyn Levitsky will conduct the discussion with Ambassador Negroponte and moderate a question and answer session with the audience.

SUMMARY:Performance:Staged Reading: O Say Can You See...?
DESCRIPTION:by OyamO\, directed by Timothy Douglas. OH SAY CAN YOU SEE...? is centered about two men and the major social issue of the times: 1. A black baseball player back in the 1880\&##39\;s who was the first black man to play briefly on an early major league baseball team just before blacks were barred\, by a gentlemen\&##39\;s agreement\, from playing on any major league team. 2. A white man who was a blackface minstrel performer\, performing as a blackface minstrel to raise money so that he could form an entire troupe of blackface minstrels. 3. The turbulent racist times in the 50 or so years after the end of the Civil War. Both men suffered due to the prevailing attitudes of the times\, one of them tragically.

SUMMARY:Performance:Hoodang
DESCRIPTION:Hoodang blends traditional hard country\, honky-tonk\, Delta blues\, Western swing\, and bluegrass with contemporary alt-country influences. The unique Hoodang sound features darkly wry lyrics\, set to driving acoustic and electric music that runs the gamut from blistering country blues to twisted\, heartworn ballads. Writes local critic Will Stewart: \"On \n'Blissfield\, the long-awaited new record by Hoodang\, singer-songwriter David Rossiter paints his songs with dust in his brushes and sings them with gravel in his throat. David Keeney\, a guitarist of unusual depth\, contributes some fine songwriting of his own\, giving Hoodang that all-important second voice. 'Blissfield' is a sonic 'Last Picture Show\,' an aural Walker Evans photograph. It’s a remarkable record and it re-establishes Hoodang as the standard bearer for dignified Americana music in southeast Michigan.\"
