This photo exhibit captures the interconnection of the community with the land\, their devotion to weaving\, and how this practice is part of a people’s identity.\n\n“Handmade History in Cusco\, Peru” is a 2013 site program in the Global and Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU). DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Stephen S. Clark Library’s map collection contains a rich variety of historical and modern maps and atlases of India. The exhibit\, which runs through April 22\, highlights many of our earliest maps\, including a facsimile of an Arabic manuscript from 1159 C.E. The exhibit covers the history and evolution of the mapping of India\, colonialism\, modern geoscapes portraying ”˜Mother India\,’ and maps of India today.\n\nMaps of India are presented in conjunction with the winter 2014 LSA theme semester \"India in the World.\"

DESCRIPTION:Kim Kozlowski is a fine art and commercial photographer based in Novi\, Michigan. Inspired by the natural beauty of the American West\, this collection of images is a celebration of light in its many forms: from radiant sunrises to the soft magic of sunset\, from light beams breaking through storm clouds to the diffused light of a forest. Kozlowski’s landscape photography is typically characterized by attention to light\, color\, composition and sharp detail. DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the Michigan Silversmith Guild celebrated its 66th anniversary of serving the regional jewelry and metalsmithing community. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. Work on display represents both faculty and student work and highlights the opportunities found in nearby regions in continuing arts education.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. He says\, \"My aim is to make the audience feel at home and offer them time to absorb each piece and become a part of something special\, something bigger.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

DESCRIPTION:by OyamO\,  directed by Timothy Douglas.  OH SAY CAN YOU SEE...? is centered about two men and the major social issue of the times: 1. A black baseball player back in the 1880\&##39\;s who was the first black man to play briefly on an early major league baseball team just before blacks were barred\, by a gentlemen\&##39\;s agreement\, from playing on any major league team. 2. A white man who was a blackface minstrel performer\, performing as a blackface minstrel to raise money so that he could form an entire troupe of blackface minstrels. 3. The turbulent racist times in the 50 or so years after the end of the Civil War. Both men suffered due to the prevailing attitudes of the times\, one of them tragically.

DESCRIPTION:Affectionately known as BARK\, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are a Canadian roots supergroup. Colin Linden\, Stephen Fearing\, and Tom Wilson got together in 1996 after discovering their common enthusiasm for the music of the late Canadian songwriter and Fred Eaglesmith band wildman Willie P. Bennett. You may remember that Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and their amazing Western wear were featured on Ann Arbor Folk Festival bill a few years back\, but it's been a while since we've heard their always eventful live show in full. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings have recently released a new album\, \"South\,\" which is mostly acoustic and was recorded quickly and without overdubs at Colin Linden's home in Nashville.\n

DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the Michigan Silversmith Guild celebrated its 66th anniversary of serving the regional jewelry and metalsmithing community. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. Work on display represents both faculty and student work and highlights the opportunities found in nearby regions in continuing arts education.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. He says\, \"My aim is to make the audience feel at home and offer them time to absorb each piece and become a part of something special\, something bigger.\"

DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. She teaches undergraduate art courses at the American Academy of Art in Chicago\, and her work has been published extensively and is in several public collections.

DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

The unique Hoodang sound features darkly wry lyrics\, set to driving acoustic and electric music that runs the gamut from blistering country blues to twisted\, heartworn ballads. Writes local critic Will Stewart: \"On \n'Blissfield\, the long-awaited new record by Hoodang\, singer-songwriter David Rossiter paints his songs with dust in his brushes and sings them with gravel in his throat. David Keeney\, a guitarist of unusual depth\, contributes some fine songwriting of his own\, giving Hoodang that all-important second voice. 'Blissfield' is a sonic 'Last Picture Show\,' an aural Walker Evans photograph. It’s a remarkable record and it re-establishes Hoodang as the standard bearer for dignified Americana music in southeast Michigan.\"

DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the Michigan Silversmith Guild celebrated its 66th anniversary of serving the regional jewelry and metalsmithing community. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. Work on display represents both faculty and student work and highlights the opportunities found in nearby regions in continuing arts education.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

Today\, Breakfast at St. Andrew's serves as many as 150 meals each morning. All concert profits will go to buy food and supplies\, and cover other operating costs for the program. This year's BreakFEST show\, benefiting the breakfast program\, features a full bill of great roots artists. Grammy- and Indie Award-winning duo Al Petteway & Amy White bring a contemporary Celtic and Appalachian-influenced acoustic groove\, and guitarist Dakota Dave Hull has been hailed by everyone from Dave Van Ronk to Doc Watson\, from the Washington Post to the jazz magazine Downbeat. The local singer-songwriter duo Jake & Mary open the show. This is going to be a fine evening of roots music with some artists who aren't often heard in these parts\, and it's for a great cause!\n

DESCRIPTION:Doris Duke's Shangri La is a five-acre Honolulu estate and its carefully orchestrated surrounding landscape and interior design. This exhibition brings this treasure to audiences throughout the continental United States for the first time. Docents will introduce Doris Duke's fascination with Islamic art\, her extensive travels in Muslim countries\, and her work with a broad array of individuals. Some sixty objects–ceramics\, textiles\, paintings\, tile panels\, and full-scale architectural elements–are juxtaposed with historic photographs and drawings. In addition to Ms. Duke’s collections\, the exhibition will also include new works by eight contemporary artists\, all of Islamic background\, who participated in the Shangri La Artists-in Residence program.

DESCRIPTION:Born on the Fourth of July\, 1948\, Jeremy Spencer began piano lessons at an early age but switched to guitar at 15. After discovering Elmore James and emulating his style\, he formed his own band\, Levi Set. His expert slide work and pounding voice caught the attention of record producer Mike Vernon\, who then convinced Fleetwood Mac Peter Green to check out the pint-sized dynamo. The rest is history. Jeremy became the first member of Fleetwood Mac to record a solo album\, \"Jeremy Spencer\" (1970). In 1998\, Jeremy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, along with the founding and present members of Fleetwood Mac. Jeremy's mastery of slide has only improved with age and his appeal is now extending to a new generation who know little or nothing of his association with Fleetwood Mac. Blues Revue editor Art Tipaldi\, says: \"Jeremy has lost none of the fire from the Fleetwood Mac days. His slide guitar still sends chills. Every note I've heard Jeremy play showcases his great commitment to the blues. I've seen him ignite the stage with a mixture of classic Chicago blues and smart contemporary songs.\" Jeremy's latest\, \"Bend in the Road\,\" was recorded with a crack band of Detroit blues and rock players.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Stephen S. Clark Library’s map collection contains a rich variety of historical and modern maps and atlases of India. The exhibit\, which runs through April 22\, highlights many of our earliest maps\, including a facsimile of an Arabic manuscript from 1159 C.E. The exhibit covers the history and evolution of the mapping of India\, colonialism\, modern geoscapes portraying ”˜Mother India\,’ and maps of India today.\n\nMaps of India are presented in conjunction with the winter 2014 LSA theme semester \"India in the World.\"

DESCRIPTION:Kim Kozlowski is a fine art and commercial photographer based in Novi\, Michigan. Inspired by the natural beauty of the American West\, this collection of images is a celebration of light in its many forms: from radiant sunrises to the soft magic of sunset\, from light beams breaking through storm clouds to the diffused light of a forest. Kozlowski’s landscape photography is typically characterized by attention to light\, color\, composition and sharp detail. Her goal is to inspire others to seek out open spaces and new vistas in the natural world.

DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the Michigan Silversmith Guild celebrated its 66th anniversary of serving the regional jewelry and metalsmithing community. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. Work on display represents both faculty and student work and highlights the opportunities found in nearby regions in continuing arts education.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. He says\, \"My aim is to make the audience feel at home and offer them time to absorb each piece and become a part of something special\, something bigger.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. She teaches undergraduate art courses at the American Academy of Art in Chicago\, and her work has been published extensively and is in several public collections.

DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, Richard Thompson prepares for a headline tour that kicks off in Saratoga\, CA on Jan. 10th\, 2014. 2013 was a busy year for the legendary guitarist/songwriter with the release of his latest album Electric\, and a full schedule of shows worldwide\, including recent dates on the road with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Thompson was nominated for “Artist of the Year” at the 2013 Americana Music Awards and received critical acclaim for Electric\, which was produced by esteemed musician/producer Buddy Miller.\n\nThompson will perform solo acoustic with his son Teddy as a special guest on many of the dates but will add his band mates to play as The Electric Trio on Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beaches Cruise and the following dates in Florida.\n\nThe recipient of BBC's Lifetime Achievement Award\, The Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting Award\, and named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all time\, Thompson is also one of the world's most celebrated songwriters. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

DESCRIPTION:The recipient of BBC's Lifetime Achievement Award\, The Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting Award\, and named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all time\, Richard Thompson is also one of the world's most celebrated songwriters. Robert Plant\, REM\, Elvis Costello\, Los Lobos\, David Byrne\, Del McCoury\, Bonnie Raitt and many others have recorded his work. Thompson continues to astound both as a guitar player and performer as NPR Music says “[Thompson is] a folksinger who doesn’t sound out of place shredding like an arena-rock star”¦and still writes songs that sting and storm” with Rolling Stone adding “”¦the excellence is undeniable.” Thompson was nominated for “Artist of the Year” at the 2013 Americana Music Awards and received critical acclaim for his latest album Electric\, which was produced by esteemed musician/producer Buddy Miller. He will perform solo acoustic with his son Teddy as a special guest.

This photo exhibit captures the interconnection of the community with the land\, their devotion to weaving\, and how this practice is part of a people’s identity.\n\n“Handmade History in Cusco\, Peru” is a 2013 site program in the Global and Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU). DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Stephen S. Clark Library’s map collection contains a rich variety of historical and modern maps and atlases of India. The exhibit\, which runs through April 22\, highlights many of our earliest maps\, including a facsimile of an Arabic manuscript from 1159 C.E. The exhibit covers the history and evolution of the mapping of India\, colonialism\, modern geoscapes portraying ”˜Mother India\,’ and maps of India today.\n\nMaps of India are presented in conjunction with the winter 2014 LSA theme semester \"India in the World.\"

DESCRIPTION:Kim Kozlowski is a fine art and commercial photographer based in Novi\, Michigan. Inspired by the natural beauty of the American West\, this collection of images is a celebration of light in its many forms: from radiant sunrises to the soft magic of sunset\, from light beams breaking through storm clouds to the diffused light of a forest. Kozlowski’s landscape photography is typically characterized by attention to light\, color\, composition and sharp detail. DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the Michigan Silversmith Guild celebrated its 66th anniversary of serving the regional jewelry and metalsmithing community. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. Work on display represents both faculty and student work and highlights the opportunities found in nearby regions in continuing arts education.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. He says\, \"My aim is to make the audience feel at home and offer them time to absorb each piece and become a part of something special\, something bigger.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. She teaches undergraduate art courses at the American Academy of Art in Chicago\, and her work has been published extensively and is in several public collections.

DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

Former Folk Festival MC Vance Gilbert is back\, and we haven't heard his full show at The Ark in a while. Vance is a stalwart of Boston's vibrant songwriting scene\, and he's opened for Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, and the late George Carlin. (How many songwriters can say that?) Vance's songs explore the experience of being nonwhite in America along with many other themes\, and he's got a varied sense of rhythm and genre that allows him to go just about anywhere he wants to go musically. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Stephen S. Clark Library’s map collection contains a rich variety of historical and modern maps and atlases of India. The exhibit\, which runs through April 22\, highlights many of our earliest maps\, including a facsimile of an Arabic manuscript from 1159 C.E. The exhibit covers the history and evolution of the mapping of India\, colonialism\, modern geoscapes portraying ”˜Mother India\,’ and maps of India today.\n\nMaps of India are presented in conjunction with the winter 2014 LSA theme semester \"India in the World.\"

Kozlowski’s landscape photography is typically characterized by attention to light\, color\, composition and sharp detail. The nonprofit guild’s lectures\, workshops\, exhibitions and other events serve the goal of broadening the knowledge of its members’ craft and facilitating communication with other metalsmiths. This exhibition is a contemporary survey of work from a select group of teachers and their students. They are from art centers\, workshops and home classrooms found in Michigan\, northern Ohio and Indiana. DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor resident Jim Lounsbury has been doing oil paintings of the Michigan landscape for more than 30 years. Urban\, rural\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, sunny skies\, cloudy days\, all seasons\, he paints them all. His only desire is to do paintings that are dynamic and somehow express his wonder for the living world. Lounsbury has exhibited his work throughout the midwest and in Florida art fairs and competitions where he has won numerous awards. He has also been a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market since 1990. Recently\, he had one of his paintings published in Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a collection of paintings of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

DESCRIPTION:Arkansas artist Joel Armstrong's wire drawings and installation art offer audiences an extension of real life and an opportunity to connect with memories\, feelings and stories. Ever since earning his MFA from Colorado State University\, Armstrong has created wire drawings of everyday items that reflect the human experience. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast of Texas\, Armstrong finishes off each piece with a rust metal patina in reference to his childhood. He says\, \"My aim is to make the audience feel at home and offer them time to absorb each piece and become a part of something special\, something bigger.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Jon Onye Lockard – painter\, portraitist\, muralist\, educator and illustrator – has been an artist for over\nfifty years. Born in Detroit\, Professor Lockard currently resides in Ann Arbor and is a senior lecturer at the U-M Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and Professor Emeritus at Washtenaw Community College. The very realistic images found in Lockard's brilliant acrylics are centered on black history. Stories unfold as you view his detailed works\, and as Lockard's states\, \"everyone has a story to tell – make them hear you.\" He makes a conscious effort to paint strong\, positive images of African Americans often cloaked in African fabrics\, symbols and signs. Lockard's work is in private collections and museums throughout the country. \n

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

SUMMARY:Performance:Gifts of Art presents Piano Jazz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Jazz percussionist Pete Siers has an international reputation for his intensely physical yet dynamically sensitive drumming\, attention to detail\, and mastery of many different styles. He recently played Carnegie Hall\, has toured Europe several times\, and is a long-time favorite at many jazz festivals across the US. In addition to his performance and recording career\, Siers has taught percussion and jazz drumming for over 25 years at U-M\, Emory University and Interlochen School of the Arts\, among others. For his piano jazz trio\, he is joined by Tad Weed on piano and Dave Bennett on clarinet. The jazz arrangements are unique yet reminiscent of the 1950s Gene Krupa Trio.

DESCRIPTION:This group is for individuals who are interested in learning some basic meditation skills and who would benefit from incorporating meditation into their lives. Meditation is an effective way to manage stress\, anxiety\, and to increase focus and productivity. The group will be open weekly on a drop-in basis\; each week the basic instructions for meditation will be presented. No pre-group screening is required.
