SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Ridges & Valleys: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:No-Touching Zone: An Exhibition by Chris Hyndman
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,” presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation. These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings. They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dance MFA Show - it all lives here (for now)
DESCRIPTION:Maxx Passion and Brittany Whitmoyer Gallery Show In an effort to address the ephemeral nature of dance\, Maxx Passion and Britt Whitmoyer will co-present their MFA thesis projects as a weeklong installation in the Duderstadt Gallery where the audience can enter and exit the space daily. In Passion’s pre-made/re-made\, her dance work lives on the screen\, and among photographs\, sculptures and soundscapes made by a collaborative web of artists. Whitmoyer’s The Bones of Your Beliefs is an exploration into the relationship between dance\, film and audience\, and what happens when they intersect. How does an audience respond to dance work made for the screen\, and how much do the senses of our eyes and ears play a role in our perception? 12pm-6pm daily

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Yahoo! Seminar Series: Christine Borgman
DESCRIPTION:The enthusiasm for “big data” is obscuring the complexity and diversity of data in scholarship. Inside the black box of “data” is a plethora of behavioral\, technological\, and policy issues. Publish or perish remains the clarion call of today’s scholars. Now they are being asked to release their data as well\, which marks a fundamental transition in scholarly communication. Data are not shiny objects that are easily exchanged. Rather\, they are fuzzy and poorly bounded entities. Data flows are uneven – abundant in some areas and sparse in others\, either easily or rarely shared. \n\nOpen access and open data are contested concepts that are often conflated. Data practices are local\, varying from field to field\, individual to individual\, and country to country. Data can serve as a lens to observe the rapidly changing landscape of scholarly practice in the sciences\, social sciences\, and the humanities. Many stakeholders are taking up the challenges and opportunities of managing this deluge of data: libraries\, archives\, private companies\, and the scholars themselves. This talk is a preview of the book by this title.

SUMMARY:Performance:Wake Owl
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Colyn Cameron of Wake Owl has been immersed in the world of music for the past ten years. Now based in Vancouver\, BC\, and Portland\, OR\, Colyn was originally born and raised in southern California. After graduation Colyn trained in organic agriculture at Emerson College in England\, worked on different farms throughout the UK\, Germany\, Chile\, and Canada and traveled the world. Upon returning from his travels\, Colyn spent some time playing in bands before deciding to record the songs he had written after his journey\, and thus began his first completed body of work\, the \"Wild Country\" EP\, which served as a prelude to the band Wake Owl’s debut full-length\, \"The Private World of Paradise\,\" with more of a rock-band instrumental sound. Recorded at National Freedom studios in Oregon with producer Richard Swift (The Shins\, Foxygen)\, that album is effortlessly cohesive\, telling stories of love\, loss\, and dreams. “ The title was a phrase that came to me one day and just stuck with me\,” notes Colyn\, “I wrote it down a lot and the more I thought about it the more I realized a lot of the songs on the album were me in some sort of paradisiacal imaginative state.\"The Private World of Paradise\" places playful experimentation and raw emotion in perfect harmony\, and it showcases a fine new songwriting voice. The young Sub Pop-label British songwriter Lyla Foy opens.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Outspoken Women: What Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford Taught us about Leadership
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Mrs. Ford’s birthday in April\, The Ford Library is marking the occasion with a presentation from Allida Black\, one of the country’s top experts on First Ladies. \n\nHistory records that Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt often spoke bluntly on issues they championed with a candor that sometimes made the White House senior staff recoil\, pundits leap for their pens\, and citizens discuss issues they usually chose to ignore. Only now are scholars beginning to realize the impact they had on their administrations' policies and their parties' electoral politics. Outspoken Women will explore the political influence these two remarkable first ladies had on their husband's public policy initiatives\, their re-election efforts\, and the national conservation about what citizenship in a democracy requires.\n\nAllida Black is Research Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University\, and Historian and Director of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers. \n\nOpen Seating\; Free Admission\; Free Parking\; Reception follow program.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Horse Feathers
DESCRIPTION:Horse Feathers is the creation of Justin Ringle\, who grew up in Lewiston\, Idaho. The space\, beauty\, and nonconformist orientation of the West seem to be reflected in his spare\, completely original sound that mixes minimalist economy with hints of classic country music and \"Nebraska\"-era Springsteen. Moving to Portland\, Justin joined forces with other musicians to create one of the most talked-about groups in the Northwest. He named the band after a grandfather's favorite expression because it seemed to describe his music: things that seemingly can't exist together are spun into a magical fusion. Says Matt Fink of Paste: \"Horse Feathers constructs music out of fragile whispers and half-remembered dreams\, eagerly filling in the gaps between Sufjan Stevens and Iron & Wine on the American indie-folk continuum.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:Pearl and the Beard
DESCRIPTION:Pearl and the Beard is three voices\, one cello\, one guitar\, one glockenspiel\, one melodica\, several drums\, one accordion\, ninety-six teeth\, and one soul. Jocelyn Mackenzie\, Emily Hope Price\, and Jeremy Styles came together in New York. Their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft began to blossom\, and the band’s genre-bending and expectation-defying sound has since burst the trio out of the confines of the New York music scene. They’ve caught the attention of the Boston Globe\, Filter Magazine\, NPR\, and thousands of wildly dedicated fans both local and international. The band captivates their audience from first note to last\, leaving fans and press alike completely engrossed in the world they’ve created. From subway platform to park to field to brightly lit venue stage\, Pearl and the Beard takes over the minds of whoever happens to be there. The Wall Street Journal described one impromptu show this way: “”¦as Pearl and the Beard joyfully belted ”¦ to a growing crowd on the [subway] platform”¦ commuters missed their trains to stay and listen\, unsure what was happening–only that it was a New York moment not to be missed.” Pearl and the Beard did a terrific short set at the 2014 Ann Arbor Folk Festival.
