Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. The performance will begin at 4 p.m. at U-M’s famed Hill Auditorium at 825 N. University Ave. in Ann Arbor. It is open to the public with general admission seating. No tickets are required.\n\nThe LSO will perform three works by Russian composers: Alexander Borodin’s symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia\, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor\, and a symphonic poem by Dmitry Shostakovich\, October\, Op. 131. \n\nBorodin\, trained as a chemist and physician in the mid-1800s\, is a fitting composer for the LSO to play\, as the orchestra’s members are medical\, health and science faculty\, staff\, students and alumni from throughout U-M. His musical tableau blends Russian and Asian influences. \n\nRachminoff’s symphony – written in the early 1900s after he emerged from a long depression with the help of a psychiatrist – builds from a suspenseful opening into lush\, beautiful melodies\, all leading to a triumphant climax. \n\nShostakovich’s rarely performed work\, ostensibly written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Russian revolution of 1917\, weaves quotations and evocations of many of his subtly anti-Communist works together into a stirring whole.\n\nThe LSO will be led by music director Adrian Slywotzky\, a graduate student in the U-M School of Music\, Theatre & Dance’s nationally known orchestral conducting program. Mott Children's Hospital - Acoustic Eidolon DESCRIPTION:Fate has a magical way of bringing people together. Take the case of Joe and Hannah\, a.k.a Acoustic Eidolon. In 1995\, Hannah\, a studio cellist\, received a call to play on a Boulder ensemble’s record. Hannah listened in amazement as directions to the recording studio told her to turn on a small road near her home\, and then turn down her own street past her house. Little did Hannah know that across the street and three houses away lived Joe\, the greatest double-neck guitjo player in the world (OK\, the only double-neck guitjo player in the world). The double-neck guitjo\, somewhere between a guitar and a harp\, has 14 strings and Joe has developed his own style and technique\, playing both necks simultaneously. Later Joe called Hannah\, saying he’d always wanted to hear the cello and the guitjo together. He had a feeling the harp-like sound of the guitjo\, combined with the warmth of Hannah’s cello\, would be beautiful together. So on a snowy day in February 1998\, they got together to play for the first time. Captivated by the music they created together\, Joe and Hannah immediately agreed to clear out their schedules\, start rehearsing full-time\, and form what would become Acoustic Eidolon. Musical/business partnership and friendship blossomed into their marriage on October 14\, 2001. Hannah and Joe (and sons Zach and Alex) became a family. Joe and Hannah joke that this was a marriage of convenience since they were already together all the time anyway! Furthering Marclay's effective displacement of original contexts\, the video is a specific translation of classic Hollywood movies into a different time-based narrative as a precursor to today's culture of YouTube remixes. \n\nThe second installation offers a unique display of all components from the participatory web-based platform Learning to Love You More by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July\, a project which ran from 2002 to 2009. The work staged a collaborative approach to art production characteristic of social practice and community engagement over the past decade\, and involved more than 8\,000 participants completing Fletcher and July's creative assignments\, such as \"Recreate this snapshot\" or \"Take a picture of your parents kissing.\" \n\nThe third season of UMMA's new media exhibitions is guest curated by Rudolf Frieling\, Curator of Media Arts at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). There is poet Cheryl\, writer of some of the prettiest\, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin\, comic Cheryl\, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a series of delightful contrasts\, for really Cheryl Wheeler is a woman of many musical personalities–heart-wrenching romantic balladeer\, marvelous observational humorist\, poet of ordinary New England scenes and people\, committed activist\, irascible grump.
