SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:An Evening with Peter Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Peter Wolf was the longtime lead singer of rock's J. Geils Band\, and he had a hand as writer in many of their hit songs (although not \"Centerfold\"). His charismatic stage presence was integral to that band's success\, which crossed geographic and racial lines. Peter went on to a great solo career that has included such radio-friendly hits as \"Come As You Are\" as well as deeper album tracks that showed his passion for classic soul and R&B. He's never stopped performing\, and the J. Geils reunion shows around the turn of the century were legendary. A set of 2009 solo gigs was supposed to be a farewell tour\, and it was mostly sold out–but then came the 2010 album \"Midnight Souvenirs\,\" on which Peter indulged his longtime passion for country music. The Ark is proud to present a legend of rock music\, up close and personal\, for two intimate evenings!\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:No-Touching Zone: An Exhibition by Chris Hyndman
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,” presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation. These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings. They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Shodo - Japanese Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Shodo is the art of drawing characters with brush and ink to express spiritual depth through the beauty of the brush strokes. Calligraphy began in China\, but in Japan\, both Kanji (Chinese characters) and Kana (Japanese phonetic characters) are combined and devised to create a uniquely Japanese art. With the brush soaked in ink\, the thickness and the tone of the characters can be controlled. In this way\, a calligrapher expresses his or her own spirit and thought. In the class\, students will experience and practice the art of Japanese calligraphy with a brush and black ink\, learning both Kana and Kanji characters. The drawing process itself encourages a calming of the mind and peacefulness\, similar to a form of meditation. Tools provided for classroom only. Instructor: Konomi Shinohara Corbin

SUMMARY:Performance:The Milk Carton Kids
DESCRIPTION:While The Milk Carton Kids' most obvious frame of musical reference is the classic folk sound of twin acoustic guitars and close harmonies\, the band both expand and contradict that rich legacy. The music strikes listeners immediately with its sweet\, bluegrass-inflected simplicity\, but underneath snake Kenneth Pattengale's sinuous modal guitar lines\, sounding for all the world like a jazzified Bert Jansch dropped in to jam with the Everly Brothers. The harmonies of Pattengale and Joey Ryan\, while recalling classic brother duos from the Louvins to the Everlys\, achieve a richness that blends into a vivid unit. The New York Times praises The Milk Carton Kids as \"a sweetly dazzling variation on close-harmony vocals\, part Simon and Garfunkel and part Everly Brothers\, with occasional acoustic prestidigitation.\"\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Performance:Priscilla Ahn
DESCRIPTION:Like many artists before her\, Priscilla Ahn went to the desert seeking transformation. After several albums with a team who'd paired her with co-writers not quite her style\, she had begun to doubt her own ability to express her true self in song. She went to the desert as a dare–to see what songs still lived in her\, to prove just what kind of record she could make on her own. \"I had to book a trip out to the desert and spend time by myself with a guitar and a keyboard. No pressure\, no guidelines\, no ”˜we need you to write this kind of song.’ It was so liberating\,\" Priscilla explains. \"It was scary at first--I wondered if I could even write songs anymore.\" She took off from L.A. and holed up in a hotel room outside Palm Springs (a 1920's getaway for Hollywood stars) to apply herself to her craft. The songs came immediately\, sometimes fully formed. Within the week she had an album–\"This Is Where We Are\,\" her first in three years. The lyrics are deeper and much more personal with Priscilla evidencing herself as a woman confident in her power and sexuality on tracks like the devotional \"Home\" and big-beat album opener \"Diana\,\" which was inspired by the myth of the goddess Artemis. \"That definitely a part of who I am that I’ve never had the courage–I’ve always been afraid to show sexuality for fear that it would be taken the wrong way.\" Though Priscilla has a gorgeous album to show from her time in desert\, ultimately the experience birthed her into her truest self as a songwriter and an artist. \"It was liberating–the haze that was over me was lifted. My confidence was regained\, again\,\" she says.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Hernandez is a first-generation American who grew up in and around Detroit. There are few regions more impressive as the nitty-gritty of Rock City\, and it left its mark on the 25-year-old artist. Her voice is instantly recognizable. Its strength and soul are matched by an honest vulnerability. Whether she is singing heartfelt words about someone that has left this world too early\, or belting out a danceable tune through a big smile\, Hernandez is unforgettable ”¦ especially with her ultra-talented Deltas behind her. Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas honed their craft in sld-out shows and tours than span the nation\, and it's easiest to classify them by seeing the people that come to every show: all races\, all ages\, all fans of good music. Says Rock NYC Live: “Jessica Hernandez and her Deltas had this interesting twist as the music they played was simply unclassifiable\, and could sometimes take some bohemian-cabaret\, or gypsy-jazz or even funky-bluesy-soul turn. It was always festive\, with a dark side\, and everything sounded authentic.” \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution
DESCRIPTION:We got a taste of the revolution at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in January\, and now Brother Joscephus is back to take it to the next level! Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution play jazz-fueled music\, featuring complex arrangements with a gritty soul and a gospel heart. Since 2007\, they have been on a musical mission to make the world a more righteous place! The two main visionaries of this 12-piece explosion of love\, Brother Joscephus and his eccentric cohort the Right Reverend Dean Dawg\, dip heavily into a gumbo rich with New Orleans rhythms\, old-school soul\, classic rock stylings\, and feel-good gospel music. They combine all this with a message of righteousness\, urging us toward acceptance and love for one another. From their home base in Brooklyn\, New York\, BroJo has brought its Love Revivals to cities all over the country. When you combine the music and the message with a one-of-a-kind high-energy stage spectacle\, you've got the makings of a revolution! Take it from a publication as straight-arrow as The New Yorker: \"This big\, Brooklyn-based\, New Orleans–inspired gospel soul-rock congregation brings a righteous message of love and rhythm.\" Come and pick up a copy of the new Brother Joscephus album\, \"Revolution of Love\"!\n
