SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Ridges & Valleys: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. Lead support for UMMA’s installation is provided by the University of Michigan Health System\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

UMMA docents will introduce this exciting new installation to visitors along with one of a series of three exhibitions showcasing Michigan architects\, Three Michigan Architects. In May and June\, visitors will explore Part 2–Robert Metcalf. Metcalf designed houses and businesses for many of Detroit and Ann Arbor’s most prominent citizens. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Ridges & Valleys: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Annual Genetics Training Program Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The annual retreat for the Genetics Training Program will be held on Thursday\, June 5\, 2014\, from 9 am to noon in the Kahn Auditorium\, BSRB (Biomedical Science and Research Building) 109 Zina Pitcher Place.  At 10 am\, Dr. Meisler\, Director of the Training Grant from 2000 to 2014\, will present the keynote lecture\, \"Genetic Approaches to Neurological Disease: 20 Years of Student Discoveries.\"  Meisler is Professor of Human Genetics and Neurology\, and Myron Levine Distinguished University Professor. Her research employs mouse models to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders.  Her laboratory identified the first human mutations in sodium channels SCN1A and SCN8A responsible for epilepsy and developental delay\, and mutations of phosphlipid metabolism responsible for peripheral nerve disorders and defects in neuronal migration.\n\nThree graduates of the Genetics Training Program who carried out thesis research in the Meisler lab and contributed to the work she will be discussing will also be featured on the program.  They will present updates on their current research and career paths since leaving the University of Michigan.  Beginning at 9:00 a.m.\, Nicholas Plummer\, Ph.D.\, Staff Scientist at the NIH/NIEHS in North Carolina\, will present \"New Mouse Strains for Manipulating Genetically Defined Subpopulations of Central Norepinephrine Neurons\"\; David Buchner\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor of Genetics at Case Western University\, will present \"Understanding the Complex Genetic Basis of Obesity and Glucose Homeostasis\"\; and Janelle O'Brien\, Ph.D.\, Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the University of Iowa\, will present \"Treatment of Retinal Degeneration in a Mouse Model of Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.\"\n\nA Poster Session and Reception will follow the keynote lecture.\n\nContact the Department of Human Genetics at 734-764-5490 for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

This well-known Ann Arbor group was formed in 2004 by Harry Rodman (percussion & vocals)\, Doug Wolgat (bass & vocals) and Kerry Adams (guitar and vocals). They were later joined by multi-instrumentalist Phil Ryski (guitar\, piano\, harp & vocals). Since then\, the band has released three award nominated albums. Their fourth album\, Something Going Down\, will be available at the end of May. The Bluescasters bring their original\, high energy music to festivals and nightclubs throughout Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:The music of The Grand Slambovians\, formerly Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams\, has been variously described as “hillbilly-Floyd\,” “folk-pop\,” “alt-country\, roots-rock\,” and “surreal Americana\;” a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies\, the music is uplifting\, empowering\, and a lot of fun. This somewhat reclusive band’s melodic avant-folk blend conjures a quirkier Tom Petty or a fuller Buffalo Tom with an exotic instrumental arsenal. The Slambovians have drawn comparisons to Petty\, The Decemberists\, Dylan\, and Bowie as they feature an otherworldly slide mandolin\, accordion\, cello and styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Frontman Joziah Longo (vocals\, guitar and harmonica) has drawn praise for a voice that is “soothing and bewitching as a snake oil tonic\, ” and “the entire root system of the Rock Family Tree is embedded in his voice\,\" says The Big Issue UK)/ Meanwhile\, the band also features guitarist/mandolinist Sharkey McEwen (think the lovechild of David Gilmour and Duane Allman)\; multi-instrumentalist Tink Lloyd (accordion\, cello\, uke\, theremin\, melodica) and Eric Puente (percussion).

DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. Lead support for UMMA’s installation is provided by the University of Michigan Health System\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents artwork by K-12th grade students in Ann Arbor Public Schools from the 2013-14 school year. Finished pieces from students in all grades will be on display in both 2-D and 3-D galleries. Work from high school students will be presented in the Gifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\, and artwork from grades K-8 will be in the Gifts of Art South Lobby Gallery. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Ridges & Valleys: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

DESCRIPTION:Cre Fuller lives and works in Ypsilanti Michigan where he collects random scraps of metal and old kitchen appliances to turn into his one of a kind robot sculptures. He gathers these parts from trash bins to antique shops and everything in between. Fuller enjoys taking commonplace objects and up-cycling them into something new.

DESCRIPTION:William Fitzsimmons is\, by his own testimony\, one of the oddest people you will ever meet. Born the youngest child of two blind parents in Pittsburgh\, he grew up in a house filled with a myriad of sounds to replace what eyes could not see. The household was suffused with pianos\, guitars\, trombones\, talking birds\, classical records\, family sing-a-longs\, bedtime stories\, and the bellowing of a pipe organ\, which his father built into the house with his own hands. When his father's orchestral records were not resonating through the walls\, his mother would educate him on the folk stylings of James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan\, and Simon & Garfunkel. After achieving his goal of becoming a practicing therapist\, William returned again to his love of crafting and playing songs. He is often compared to contemporaries Sufjan Stevens\, Iron and Wine\, and the late Elliott Smith. He uses banjo\, melodica\, ukulele\, mandolin\, and sometimes electronic elements in his music. William comes to Michigan with a new release\, \"Lions\,\" which he calls \"a musical reflection of the personal renovation that’s taken place since 2010’s 'Gold In The Shadow.'\" Tonight's special guest is Montreal-born songwriter Leif Vollebekk\, who brings a new release\, \"North Americana.\" “I feel like I created a record from 1970something that no one’s heard before\,\" Leif says.\n
