DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Corky Siegel & Marcella Detroit w/The Chamber Blues Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:\"Chamber Blues was neither my idea nor my fault\,\" says harmonica wizard Corky Siegel. \"It grabbed me and it won't let go!\" This unique mixture of Chicago blues and classical chamber music got started when Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa invited Corky Siegel and his Siegel-Schwall Band to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the free-spirited year of 1966. Chamber Blues is played by a string quartet\, an east Indian tabla\, and blues harmonica and piano\, with vocals on occasion–on this occasion by Marcella Detroit\, a.k.a. Marcy Levy\, who was one half of the UK band Shakespear's Sister. Chamber blues not a blend of classical and blues\, Corky explains\, but \"a juxtaposition of classical and blues flavors.\" It's also still unlike anything else on the musical landscape.

DESCRIPTION:David Howell is a cancer physician and artist. He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is a former faculty member of the U-M Medical School. Howell has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and art for over 50. He received inspiration from the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century\, impressive humans and human achievement\, and the inaugural ArtPrize exhibition held in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Howell's work has been on display in three subsequent ArtPrize exhibitions. He resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Columbus\, Ohio.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Firenation: An Odyssey in Cast & Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

Hurley’s inspiration for this collection was to evoke\, “neo-romantic sentiment regarding nature and humanity’s place in it”. DESCRIPTION:Daria Lvovsky\, a native of the USSR who currently lives in Israel\, combines her love of nature with her affinity for maternal scenes in this unique exhibition of needle felted animal dolls. Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Sewn Morphology: Embroidered Sculpture 
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. DESCRIPTION:With their 2010 Nonesuch-label debut\, \"Genuine Negro Jig\"–which garnered a Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy–The Carolina Chocolate Drops proved that the old-time\, fiddle and banjo-based music they’d so scrupulously researched and passionately performed could be a living\, breathing\, ever-evolving sound. Starting with material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas\, they have sought to highlight the central role African Americans have played in shaping our nation’s popular music from its beginnings. The Drops' repertoire incorporates blues\, jazz and folk balladry alongside crackling string-band tunes. Though often striking out in new directions\, the Drops return to familiar turf with tracks like “Riro’s House\,” a traditional piece they’d learned from their late mentor\, North Carolina fiddler Joe Thompson. Through several changes in membership\, the Drops have continued to prosper under the leadership of singer/fiddler/multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens\, whom super-producer T-Bone Burnett recently called the most profound musician active today. Much more than simply revivalists\, The Carolina Chocolate Drops have evolved into American tradition-bearers of the first order–and their show is as much fun as anybody else's in the business. \n

My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Anne has amassed awards and praise from critics\, fellow artists\, and fans with her songs that are by turns “tender\, barbed\, and spiritual” (Washington Post). Her graceful\, vulnerable\, and sometimes humorous pop-folk songs have captured audience imaginations for over a decade. Anne has played the Sundance Film Festival and Lilith Fair (2010)\, and she was a featured artist on the New York Times Music Podcast. In February Anne released \"Dora\,\" a collaborative album of poems-turned-songs with poet Claire Clube. These poem-songs–visceral\, ethereal\, and set to a mix of singer-songwriter pop\, classical and jazz/blues–explore a woman’s relationships with her world and the emotions of divorce. \n

DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

DESCRIPTION:May Erlewine comes from a family of artists and musicians. Early on she was exposed to music (and people) of all kinds. May was home-educated\, came up singing\, and while still just a teenager hitchhiked all across North America playing in small and large towns\, riding freight trains with her little dog\, and busking on the streets. In her travels May Erlewine came to know the land and the pulse of the people. Her songs show a very real connection and concern with everyday folk. Partnering with her husband Seth\, May has used her music to support the community and create positive change and connections. May plays guitar\, fiddle\, viola\, piano and a few other instruments\, but mostly she sings. Her songs are treasured by people of all faiths and politics. The sounds and influences you'll hear in her music range from good old fashioned folk and country swing to soul singers\, rock and music from all over the wide world. May comes to town with a new release\, \"Where We Are.\"

Howell has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and art for over 50. He received inspiration from the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century\, impressive humans and human achievement\, and the inaugural ArtPrize exhibition held in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Howell's work has been on display in three subsequent ArtPrize exhibitions. He resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Columbus\, Ohio.\n

DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. Lead support for UMMA’s installation is provided by the University of Michigan Health System\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Melissa Ferrick
DESCRIPTION:On the truth is\, her first self-produced album since 2004\, Melissa Ferrick takes us through the ending of one relationship and into the early stages of another. It's a candid record that she sets to a sweeping Americana/alt-country soundtrack\, layering pedal steel guitars and background harmonies into some of the lushest\, brightest songs of her 20-year career. Melissa's life has always been an open book. Signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-1990s\, she helped represent a new wave of alt-rock females–including artists like Liz Phair\, PJ Harvey and college-mate Paula Cole-- who sang about adult womanhood with sharp\, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act\, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a number of albums in which she played every instrument herself. Her life took dips and turns along the way\, and she chronicled every detail in her songwriting. Melissa Ferrick has the kind of relationship with her audience that few artists are blessed with. Her live performances are fierce and funny\, outspoken and vulnerable\, passionate and real.
