DESCRIPTION:David Howell is a cancer physician and artist. He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is a former faculty member of the U-M Medical School. Howell has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and art for over 50. He received inspiration from the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century\, impressive humans and human achievement\, and the inaugural ArtPrize exhibition held in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Howell's work has been on display in three subsequent ArtPrize exhibitions. He resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Columbus\, Ohio.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Firenation: An Odyssey in Cast & Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

DESCRIPTION:Daria Lvovsky\, a native of the USSR who currently lives in Israel\, combines her love of nature with her affinity for maternal scenes in this unique exhibition of needle felted animal dolls. Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

DESCRIPTION:If you have fond memories of Los Lobos shows in this area\, why not give the Iguanas a try? This New Orleans band has tangled\, nourishing roots in Mexican music\, blues\, cajun and zydeco\, Louisiana funk\, and roots rock. They call their sound \"Chicano Rock with a greasy New Orleans second-line/mambo flavor.\" The Iguanas were always a great party band\, but lately they've added some serious songwriting chops to their infectious roots grooves. This is great Americana music with the jolt that only New Orleans can give it\, and they've brought out the Latin flavor that lurks in all the great music from the Crescent City. The Iguanas come to Michigan with a new album\, \"Juarez\,\" recorded at Piety Studios in New Orleans.

The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

Come and see crystals from the Museum of Natural History\, books from the Library's collection\, and displays of the equipment used at the X-Ray Crystallography Lab.\n\nUNESCO chose 2014 as the International year of Crystallography because it commemorates two important anniversaries in the study of matter: the centennial of X-ray diffraction\, and the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals. Both breakthroughs led to subsequent studies in the role of symmetry in matter and the nature of crystalline material. U-M continues this investigation today.\n

He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is a former faculty member of the U-M Medical School. Howell has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and art for over 50. He received inspiration from the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century\, impressive humans and human achievement\, and the inaugural ArtPrize exhibition held in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Howell's work has been on display in three subsequent ArtPrize exhibitions. He resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Columbus\, Ohio.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Firenation: An Odyssey in Cast & Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

DESCRIPTION:Daria Lvovsky\, a native of the USSR who currently lives in Israel\, combines her love of nature with her affinity for maternal scenes in this unique exhibition of needle felted animal dolls. Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Sewn Morphology: Embroidered Sculpture 
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:In the words of AllMusic.com\, \"British alt-rock ensemble Scars on 45 make yearning\, melodic pop that combines the big guitar rock of Oasis with the melodic\, country-influenced sound of Fleetwood Mac.\" The band formed in 2007 as two fellow soccer team members\, singer/songwriter Danny Bemrose and bassist Stuart Nichols\, began writing songs together. They added keyboardist David Nowakowski\, vocalist Aimee Driver\, and drummer Chris Durling\, and they began to attract attention stateside when their song \"Beauty's Running Wild\" appeared in an episode of \"CSI: New York\" in 2009. Signed to the Chop Shop subsidiary of Atlantic Records\, Scars on 45 released a pair of EPs and then a full-length eponymous debut\, featuring a single\, \"Heart on Fire\,\" that appeared on the \"Grey's Anatomy\, Vol. 4\" soundtrack\" Scars on 45 opened for Vance Gilbert at The Ark in March\, and we're excited about their Ark debut\, which brings music from their forthcoming sophomore album.

DESCRIPTION:David Howell is a cancer physician and artist. He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is a former faculty member of the U-M Medical School. Howell has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and art for over 50. He received inspiration from the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century\, impressive humans and human achievement\, and the inaugural ArtPrize exhibition held in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. Howell's work has been on display in three subsequent ArtPrize exhibitions. He resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and Columbus\, Ohio.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Firenation: An Odyssey in Cast & Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

Hurley’s inspiration for this collection was to evoke\, “neo-romantic sentiment regarding nature and humanity’s place in it”. DESCRIPTION:Daria Lvovsky\, a native of the USSR who currently lives in Israel\, combines her love of nature with her affinity for maternal scenes in this unique exhibition of needle felted animal dolls. Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Come and see crystals from the Museum of Natural History\, books from the Library's collection\, and displays of the equipment used at the X-Ray Crystallography Lab.\n\nUNESCO chose 2014 as the International year of Crystallography because it commemorates two important anniversaries in the study of matter: the centennial of X-ray diffraction\, and the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals. Both breakthroughs led to subsequent studies in the role of symmetry in matter and the nature of crystalline material. U-M continues this investigation today.\n

DESCRIPTION:Daria Lvovsky\, a native of the USSR who currently lives in Israel\, combines her love of nature with her affinity for maternal scenes in this unique exhibition of needle felted animal dolls. Lvovsky\, who holds an MSc degree in Biology from the University of Belarus\, manages to create exceptionally realistic animal dolls made of all natural fibers. Being a mother to her three young daughters\, Lvovsky feels the maternal instinct in all mothers is admirable and inspiring.

DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Come and see crystals from the Museum of Natural History\, books from the Library's collection\, and displays of the equipment used at the X-Ray Crystallography Lab.\n\nUNESCO chose 2014 as the International year of Crystallography because it commemorates two important anniversaries in the study of matter: the centennial of X-ray diffraction\, and the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals. Both breakthroughs led to subsequent studies in the role of symmetry in matter and the nature of crystalline material. U-M continues this investigation today.\n

DESCRIPTION:Toledo\, Ohio and Holland\, Michigan artist Matthew J. Paskiet began glassblowing in 1993 at the Toledo Museum of Art. In 2002\, he formed Firenation\, ltd.\, his current glass studio and gallery. For the past five years\, he’s also been working in the Ohio Arts Council’s artist in residency program\, and he has taught kiln cast glass in schools across Ohio. Traditionally\, he works in blown and or off-hand sculpture\, leaning towards the abstract. His Conversation series included in this exhibition is an attempt to deal with loss and the fragility of life while realizing the illusion of invincibility from a manmade world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits.     \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

DESCRIPTION:Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 explores the work of contemporary artists of Native North American origin working in both traditional and new media\, acknowledging their long and diverse cultural legacies while overtly and simultaneously exploring\, and often confronting\, the many ongoing issues inherent to their cultural heritage.\n\nThis exhibition is the culmination of a decade-long investigation and exploration into fine art created by Indigenous artists from North America\, defined by their regional origins. This concluding exhibition of the three-part series presents new work by Native American\, First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit artists and designers from the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of the United States and Canada. Curated by Ellen Taubman\, this Changing Hands presentation is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.\n\nChanging Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 / Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast was organized by the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Marcia Ball
DESCRIPTION:They call her Long Tall Marcia Ball\, and she's the one-of-a-kind Queen of Swamp Blues Piano. Marcia Ball grew up in Vinton\, Louisiana\, in the heart of an area overflowing with blues\, zydeco\, and swamp rock. All the female members of her family played the piano. In 1970 Marcia and her first husband were heading for San Francisco\, but their car broke down in Austin\, and that's where she stayed. She put together a trio of talents: piano playing\, songwriting\, and vocals. In 1983 Marciua released her first solo album\, \"Soulful Dress\,\" and ever since then she's been letting the good times roll at The Ark and other clubs around the country where a corps of devoted fans has watched her evolved into a true legend of the piano blues. Marcia has won eight Blues Music Awards\, and she was recently inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame. \n
