The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. In 1965\, Al moved to London and became the emcee at the famed Les Cousins folk club\, rubbing shoulders with young talents like Paul Simon\, Ralph McTell\, Bert Jansch\, and Cat Stevens. After several albums written in autobiographical mode\, Al shifted his lyrical gaze outward\, into history\, literature and current events\, an approach debuted on 1973’s \"Past\, Present & Future.\" Al’s next album exploded in America: \"Year of the Cat\,\" released in 1976\, spawned two Top 20 hits (the title song and “On the Border”)\, and itself became a million-selling record. After Al relocated to California\, where he still resides\, his next album\, 1978’s \"Time Passages\,\" repeated the success of its predecessor\, selling another million copies and spinning off the Top 10 title track and Top 30 single\, “Song on the Radio.” In the early 1990s\, Al returned to his folk roots with \"Famous Last Words\,\" which utilized acoustic instrumentation and traditional folk and classical styles. Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret\, Chandigarh’s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture created specifically for the building’s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world\, commanding record prices. Starting with Chandigarh furniture in the present\, the film begins in New York apartments\, London townhouses\, Belgian villas\, and Paris salons of avid collectors. From there\, it moves backward to the furniture’s sale at auction\, preview exhibitions\, and photography for auction catalogues\, to restoration\, cargo shipping containers\, and Indian ports—ending finally in Chandigarh\, a city in a state of entropy. \n\n On October 19\, 2013\, Siegel auctioned Provenance at Christie’s in London\, turning the film into another object at auction\, inseparable from the market it depicts. Lot 248\, a second film\, captures the auction of Provenance\, becoming a mirror of the first\, repeating and completing the circuit of design and art that define speculative markets.\n\nAmie Siegel was born in 1974 in Chicago. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA/PS1\, Walker Art Center\, Hayward Gallery\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, KW Berlin\, ICA Boston\, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. San has been playing here frequently since 1973 with his brother\, Laz\, as the duo Gemini. Emily began joining them on stage about ten years ago\, when she was just nine. Since then\, she’s become an accomplished violinist\, having studied classical violin for more than a decade\, and has also developed a lovely and unique singing style. She’s performed widely alone and with San\, Gemini\, and other musicians at The Ark and at many other folk venues and festivals throughout Michigan. Joining San and Emily is bassist Jacob Warren\, a U-M music school student and principal bassist in the University Philharmonia Orchestra. In the summer of 2013 Jacob was selected to be a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and \, and toured with that ensemble\, conducted by Valery Gergiev\, to Washington DC\, Moscow\, St. Petersburg\, and London.\n\nThis show is not aimed specifically at families. Gates will open at 7 p.m. with practice slated to begin at 8 p.m.\n\nIn addition\, the first 300 U-M student season-ticket holders that sign up for a ticket will have access to watch practice from the sidelines. There will be a limit of one ticket for the sideline per these first 300 student season-ticket holders.
