SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The International Year of Crystallography
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCrystallography is the branch of science concerned with the structure and properties of crystals. Come and see crystals from the Museum of Natural History\, books from the Library's collection\, and displays of the equipment used at the X-Ray Crystallography Lab.\n\nUNESCO chose 2014 as the International year of Crystallography because it commemorates two important anniversaries in the study of matter: the centennial of X-ray diffraction\, and the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals. Both breakthroughs led to subsequent studies in the role of symmetry in matter and the nature of crystalline material. U-M continues this investigation today.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents My Healing Art: Ink Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Zahrah loves forms that have circular line\; textures fascinate and colors inspire her. My Healing Art\, a series of ink drawings\, were first created during her recovery from thyroid cancer a few years ago. Ill and filled with distress\, fear and helplessness\, she could only muster enough energy to draw simple circular shapes and lines. But she soon discovered that the act of drawing these abstract shapes everyday was therapeutic and healing. She found doing the drawings meditative and calming\, and for the first time since the terrifying diagnosis\, she felt connected\, comforted and secure. This very personal body of work tells her story of healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Sewn Morphology: Embroidered Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor based artist and designer Kirsten Lund received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a variety of media including fiber\, painting and printmaking. In this recent series\, abstract sewn and crocheted forms are covered in embroidered\, beaded and hand-printed imagery. Inspired by patterns in nature\, whether anatomical\, microscopic or aerial\, the elements are related in form and reference point. Rooted in the seductive physicality of traditional craft processes and created with conceptual frameworks\, the finished objects exist at the junction of art and craft. Lund has exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Susan Sontag claimed that photographs “owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical\, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject.” Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\n\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation\, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs\, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example\, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dalí and Philippe Halsman\; Frida Kahlo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo\; and Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist’s own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions.\n\nThis exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits. \n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System.

SUMMARY:Performance:Carlene Carter
DESCRIPTION:Carlene Carter\, daughter of June Carter from her marriage to country star Carl Smith\, has been perhaps the most fearless member of the Carter clain. In the late 1970s and early 1980s she lived in London\, married rocker Nick Lowe\, and recorded some fabulous and underrated fusions of country and New Wave. A decade later she emerged at the top of the American country scene with zippy hits like \"I Fell in Love.\" Now Carlene is back with \"Carter Girl\,\" a marvelous tribute that treats the songs of the Carter Family as continuously growing pieces of American music. Said NPR in its rave review: \"She doesn't approach these old songs as sacred relics to be enshrined with pious respect. Rather\, she treats them like living\, vital pieces of art that can withstand being taken apart\, thought about and re-imagined.\" We're proud to welcome this member of country music's first family in her debut Ark appearance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:This is your chance to look through the 1857 Fitz refractor.\nThe Detroit Observatory in Ann Arbor is a 19th century building\, so things move at a 19th century pace. You must be able to climb stairs to get to the telescope. \nCriteria for opening the dome:\n It must be between 40 º and 90 º F\, less than 80% humidity\, and less than 10% chance of rain. We prefer less than 50% cloud cover\, though that depends on the clouds (thin vs. thick) and what's out.\nGet updates on the Detroit Observatory Viewing Nights website\, or look for the Detroit Observatory on Facebook\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Andy Irvine & Donal Luny
DESCRIPTION:Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers\, his voice one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as \"a tradition in himself.\" Musician\, singer and songwriter\, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his 45-year career. From Sweeney's Men in the mid-1960s\, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 1970s and then from the band Patrick Street up to the present day\, Andy has been both a legend and a pioneer in both the Celtic and world music scenes. Tonight Andy is joined by left-handed string player Dónal Lunny\, his partner in the unique Celtic–world music fusion band Mozaik. Join us for a rarely-seen-in-this-country show that draws on deep Irish roots yet shows Celtic music as a vital and ever-evolving art.

SUMMARY:Performance:Joshua Davis & Rachael Davis
DESCRIPTION:Songwriter Rachael Davis was born in Lansing and grew up in Cadillac. What grabs you first about Rachael is the voice\, with a bluesy richness that will make you pull off the road to listen. Add in some incisive songwriting\, and you have an artist with a strong and growing following. Says songwriter Susan Werner: \"We don't have Eva Cassidy anymore\, but we do have Rachael Davis.\" Rachael’s diverse slant on acoustic music can aptly be explained by a cassette mixtape that her father played during her early childhood in the family’s Chevy Cavalier station wagon\, “Iggy.” On one side of the cassette was the soundtrack for the film \"The Big Chill\"\; on the other side was John Hartford’s “Aereo-Plane.\" Recently Rachael has been living in Tennessee and working on an album\, so you can be among the first to hear this new music!\n\nRaised between the homes of a Detroit schoolteacher and an Upper Peninsula outdoorsman\, Joshua Davis is the product of both city and country. An early interest in songwriting\, country blues\, and fingerstyle guitar paved the way for original material that's a seamless union of new and old. After six years and three albums as the primary songwriter and vocalist of the Michigan quartet Steppin’ in It\, Joshua has released three solo albums. His latest\, \"A Miracle of Birds\,\" reflects his recent experiences: In 2012\, Joshua joined the nonprofit organization On the Ground for the Run Across Palestine and experienced a life-changing journey. The focus of the five-day\, 129-mile ultramarathon was to raise funds and awareness in support of fair-trade olive farming communities in the Palestinian West Bank. The stories and songs on \"A Miracle of Birds\,\" released one year after the run\, are honest expressions of his experiences in the West Bank\, colored by Joshua's own unique history and upbringing.

SUMMARY:Performance:Al Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Al Stewart was born in Glasgow\, Scotland\, in 1945\, and moved with his family to Bournemouth\, a seaside town in the south of England\, at an early age.A strong dose of Bob Dylan’s original songs shifted his focus from instrumentalist to lyricist and vocalist. In 1965\, Al moved to London and became the emcee at the famed Les Cousins folk club\, rubbing shoulders with young talents like Paul Simon\, Ralph McTell\, Bert Jansch\, and Cat Stevens. After several albums written in autobiographical mode\, Al shifted his lyrical gaze outward\, into history\, literature and current events\, an approach debuted on 1973’s \"Past\, Present & Future.\" Al’s next album exploded in America: \"Year of the Cat\,\" released in 1976\, spawned two Top 20 hits (the title song and “On the Border”)\, and itself became a million-selling record. After Al relocated to California\, where he still resides\, his next album\, 1978’s \"Time Passages\,\" repeated the success of its predecessor\, selling another million copies and spinning off the Top 10 title track and Top 30 single\, “Song on the Radio.” In the early 1990s\, Al returned to his folk roots with \"Famous Last Words\,\" which utilized acoustic instrumentation and traditional folk and classical styles. He's never stopped creating completely original music: \"Down in the Cellar\" (2000)\, was a concept album\, incorporating Al’s knowledge of fine wines into his you-are-there songs of personal and historical vignettes. Al makes a rare Michigan appearance with \"A Beach Full of Shells\,\" his first CD for the Appleseed label\, which finds him at the peak of his songwriting powers\, still able to conjure other times and distant places with well-chosen words and evocative music.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Amie Siegel: Provenance
DESCRIPTION:Amie Siegel’s Provenance traces in reverse the global trade in furniture from the Indian city of Chandigarh. Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret\, Chandigarh’s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture created specifically for the building’s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world\, commanding record prices. Starting with Chandigarh furniture in the present\, the film begins in New York apartments\, London townhouses\, Belgian villas\, and Paris salons of avid collectors. From there\, it moves backward to the furniture’s sale at auction\, preview exhibitions\, and photography for auction catalogues\, to restoration\, cargo shipping containers\, and Indian ports—ending finally in Chandigarh\, a city in a state of entropy. \n\n On October 19\, 2013\, Siegel auctioned Provenance at Christie’s in London\, turning the film into another object at auction\, inseparable from the market it depicts. Lot 248\, a second film\, captures the auction of Provenance\, becoming a mirror of the first\, repeating and completing the circuit of design and art that define speculative markets.\n\nAmie Siegel was born in 1974 in Chicago. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA/PS1\, Walker Art Center\, Hayward Gallery\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, KW Berlin\, ICA Boston\, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. Screenings include Cannes Film Festival\, Berlin Film Festival\, New York Film Festival\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The National Gallery of Art\, and the Harvard Film Archive\, among many other museums and cinematheques. She has been a fellow of the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and The Film Study Center at Harvard University\, as well as a recipient of the ICA Bostonʼs Foster Prize and\, most recently\, a Sundance Institute Film Fund award for Provenance.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning\, and Institute for the Humanities.
