His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Chinese Historical Figures: 1966–1976 depicts people who lived—known and unknown\, and some of whom eventually perished—during the turbulent time of the Cultural Revolution. By portraying these individuals with monumentality and poignant realism\, Xu Weixin brings our focus to their lives and ordeals\, inviting an emotional connection. Julius Caesar\, Cicero\, Augustus\, and Nero all owned villas in this region. With more than 200 objects on loan from Italy\, the exhibition focuses on two structures at Oplontis that were buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. One is an enormous luxury villa that may once have belonged to the family of Nero’s second wife Poppaea. The other is a nearby commercial-residential complex—a center for the trade in wine and other produce of villa lands. Together these two establishments speak eloquently of the ways in which the Roman elite built\, maintained\, and displayed their vast wealth\, political power\, and social prestige. In presenting a selection of impressive works of art along with ordinary utilitarian objects\, the exhibition also calls attention to Roman disparities of wealth\, social class\, and consumption. Such disparities were as problematic for Roman society as they are for ours today.\n\nThis exhibition in Ann Arbor will remain open to the public until May 15\, 2016. Toward this goal\, we developed a series of new middle and late first-row transition metal complexes in bis(alkoxide) ligand environment and are currently exploring their reactivity in nitrene and carbene transfer. We have recently reported synthesis of “quasi-two-coordinate” complexes M(OR)2(THF)2 (OR = OC(tBu)2Ph\, M = Mn\, Fe\, Co) that proceeds via cluster intermediates featuring rare seesaw geometry. The iron(II) complex Fe(OR)2(THF)2 undergoes facile reaction with aliphatic and aromatic azides. The reaction with aliphatic azides results in the reductive coupling of azides to form the iron(III) hexazene complex (RO)2Fe(μ-κ2:κ2-RN6R)Fe(OR)2. In contrast\, the reaction of Fe(OR)2(THF)2 with aromatic azides (ArN3) leads to the formation of azoarenes ArNNAr\, with concomitant liberation of dinitrogen. The reaction is catalytic for bulky azides\, and is postulated to proceed via metal-nitrene intermediate [Fe(OR)2(NAr)]. Mechanistic\, spectroscopic\, structural\, and theoretical studies will be presented. For chromium\, stable Cr(OR)2(NAr) complexes are obtained\, which display catalytic reactivity in nitrene transfer to isocyanides. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. First\, we study joint quantile regression at multiple quantile levels with high dimensional covariates. Variable selection performed at individual quantile levels may lack stability across neighboring quantiles\, making it difficult to understand and to interpret the impact of a given covariate on conditional quantile functions. We propose a Dantzig-type penalization method for sparse model selection at each quantile level which at the same time aims to shrink differences of the selected models across neighboring quantiles. We show model selection consistency\, and investigate stability of the selected models across quantiles.\nIn the second part of the thesis\, we consider the class of covariance models that can be expressed as a Kronecker sum. Taking advantage of our theoretical analysis on matrix decomposition\, we demonstrate that our methodology yields computationally efficient and statistically convergent estimates. We show that this decomposition may correspond to a representation of the data as signal plus additive noise. This may in turn be used in a regression framework to accommodate measurement error. We assess performance using simulations and illustrate the methods using a study of hawkmoth flight control (Sponberg et al. 2015). We find that the decomposition successfully isolates signal and noise\, and reveals a strong-er neural encoding relationship than otherwise would be obtained. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Chinese Historical Figures: 1966–1976 depicts people who lived—known and unknown\, and some of whom eventually perished—during the turbulent time of the Cultural Revolution. By portraying these individuals with monumentality and poignant realism\, Xu Weixin brings our focus to their lives and ordeals\, inviting an emotional connection. Reflecting the artist’s deep interest in the human condition\, these single-person portraits challenge our expectations and compel us to see beyond official narratives of historical events and social conditions. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. It is not surprising then that UPEC strains deficient in iron acquisition are attenuated\, suggesting that UPEC would be sensitive to drugs that block iron acquisition. To identify novel scaffolds and validate bacterial iron acquisition as a therapeutic target\, we have screened 33\,000 marine microbial-derived natural product extracts (NPEs) against an unmodified UPEC clinical isolate. This ensured that screening hits were not susceptible to Gram-negative efflux pumps. We identified 204 NPEs that reduce wild-type UPEC growth in low iron by over 90% without chelating iron or impacting bacterial viability in iron-replete medium. From these hits\, we have purified a novel family of cyclic natural products that inhibit bacterial growth at nanomolar concentrations. \n\nPreliminary data suggest that these small molecules are interacting with siderophore biosynthesis enzymes. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Chinese Historical Figures: 1966–1976 depicts people who lived—known and unknown\, and some of whom eventually perished—during the turbulent time of the Cultural Revolution. By portraying these individuals with monumentality and poignant realism\, Xu Weixin brings our focus to their lives and ordeals\, inviting an emotional connection. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Chinese Historical Figures: 1966–1976 depicts people who lived—known and unknown\, and some of whom eventually perished—during the turbulent time of the Cultural Revolution. By portraying these individuals with monumentality and poignant realism\, Xu Weixin brings our focus to their lives and ordeals\, inviting an emotional connection. Reflecting the artist’s deep interest in the human condition\, these single-person portraits challenge our expectations and compel us to see beyond official narratives of historical events and social conditions. The event is a theatrical exploration of the artists in Giverny at the turn of the 20th century.\n\nGiverny is a tranquil village\, nestled between Paris and Rouen. It was home to Claude Monet\, his wife\, Alice\, and their six children. The shimmering air and pastoral landscapes drew painters from near and far. Giveny attracted so many American painters\, that it became known as “the American colony.” Painters who sojourned there included John Singer Sargent\, Theodore Robinson\, Theodore Butler\, Lilla Cabot Perry\, and Michigan native\, Frederick Frieseke.\n\nThis event is the brainchild of writer Rachel Urist and theatre-maker Nancy Heusel. The event is hosted by the Friends of the Michigan League. The presentation features the paintings of Frederick Frieseke\, a Michigan-born member of the Giverny community. Urist directs. She and Heusel join the cast.\n\nThis reader’s theatre presentation includes live music (Laurel Federbush on harp) and projected images of eighty paintings by many artists.
