She attended Indiana University-Purdue University\, Indianapolis Campus (IUPUI)\; and Indiana Central College\; and has taken Master Dyeing Classes at Dartmouth College. Smith received the 2015 NICHE Award for design\, and her textile work was selected for exhibition in the United Nations\, Geneva\, Switzerland (2016). Swimming Upstream tells her personal journey with an injury that placed her temporarily in a wheel chair\, to finally finding the courage to start creating art and living life again.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Siebren Versteeg: LIKE II (2016)
DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The subjects in Miner Portraits are coal miners working in harsh conditions in contemporary China. Chinese Historical Figures: 1966–1976 depicts people who lived—known and unknown\, and some of whom eventually perished—during the turbulent time of the Cultural Revolution. By portraying these individuals with monumentality and poignant realism\, Xu Weixin brings our focus to their lives and ordeals\, inviting an emotional connection. Reflecting the artist’s deep interest in the human condition\, these single-person portraits challenge our expectations and compel us to see beyond official narratives of historical events and social conditions. Xu Weixin is currently a professor of painting and the former executive dean of the School of Arts\, Renmin University\, Beijing.

DESCRIPTION:In a world beset with problems and heartache\, for this retrospective\, Philip Dattilo shares photographs of cheer\, amusement and inspiration. A professional photographer since the 1970s\, Dattilo searched through 40 years of his personal photographs as well as those for medical\, architectural and industrial clients (including U-M). The search uncovered a gold mine of happy memories\, suggesting “Life can sometimes be good.”  His work includes the photo booklet Enjoy Detroit\, It’s Your City\, a family photographic portrait for President Gerald Ford\, and work on display in the permanent collection of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Self-taught textile artist\, author and curator Bonnie J. Smith lives and works in San Jose\, California. She attended Indiana University-Purdue University\, Indianapolis Campus (IUPUI)\; and Indiana Central College\; and has taken Master Dyeing Classes at Dartmouth College. Smith received the 2015 NICHE Award for design\, and her textile work was selected for exhibition in the United Nations\, Geneva\, Switzerland (2016). Swimming Upstream tells her personal journey with an injury that placed her temporarily in a wheel chair\, to finally finding the courage to start creating art and living life again.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Siebren Versteeg: LIKE II (2016)
DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. A professional photographer since the 1970s\, Dattilo searched through 40 years of his personal photographs as well as those for medical\, architectural and industrial clients (including U-M). The search uncovered a gold mine of happy memories\, suggesting “Life can sometimes be good.”  His work includes the photo booklet Enjoy Detroit\, It’s Your City\, a family photographic portrait for President Gerald Ford\, and work on display in the permanent collection of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:The growth of knowledge in the chemical sciences has seen a dramatic increase since the beginning of the 21st century. The advance is particularly significant in synthetic chemistry because of its centrality and value to society. Key to all of this is the constant development of novel C-C and C-heteroatom bond-forming strategies\, methods and reagents that expand the toolbox of synthetic organic chemists and enable the environmentally friendly construction of complex molecular structures using the fewest number of chemical steps and generating the least amount waste. The Kürti lab has been exploring several fundamentally new strategies for the transition-metal-free direct: (i) arylation of arenes\; (ii)\; alpha-arylation of ketones\, esters and amides\; (iii) O-arylation of oximes\; (iv) primary amination of arylmetals such as aryl Grignard reagents and arylboronic acids\; (v) intramolecular C(sp2)-H amination of arenes\; (vi) double arylation of a suitable nitrogen linchpin reagents to afford diarylamines. We have also discovered\, in collaboration with the Falck (UTSW) and Ess labs (BYU)\, the Rh-catalyzed direct N-H/N-alkyl aziridination of olefins as well as the primary (-NH2) and NH-alkyl amination of arenes\, transformations that eluded synthetic chemists for decades. These methods have one common feature: a weak N-N or N-O bond is cleaved in order to form a stronger C-C or C-N bond. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. A professional photographer since the 1970s\, Dattilo searched through 40 years of his personal photographs as well as those for medical\, architectural and industrial clients (including U-M). The search uncovered a gold mine of happy memories\, suggesting “Life can sometimes be good.”  His work includes the photo booklet Enjoy Detroit\, It’s Your City\, a family photographic portrait for President Gerald Ford\, and work on display in the permanent collection of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

Smith received the 2015 NICHE Award for design\, and her textile work was selected for exhibition in the United Nations\, Geneva\, Switzerland (2016). Swimming Upstream tells her personal journey with an injury that placed her temporarily in a wheel chair\, to finally finding the courage to start creating art and living life again.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. The search uncovered a gold mine of happy memories\, suggesting “Life can sometimes be good.”  His work includes the photo booklet Enjoy Detroit\, It’s Your City\, a family photographic portrait for President Gerald Ford\, and work on display in the permanent collection of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. DESCRIPTION:In a world beset with problems and heartache\, for this retrospective\, Philip Dattilo shares photographs of cheer\, amusement and inspiration. A professional photographer since the 1970s\, Dattilo searched through 40 years of his personal photographs as well as those for medical\, architectural and industrial clients (including U-M). The search uncovered a gold mine of happy memories\, suggesting “Life can sometimes be good.”  His work includes the photo booklet Enjoy Detroit\, It’s Your City\, a family photographic portrait for President Gerald Ford\, and work on display in the permanent collection of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

Smith received the 2015 NICHE Award for design\, and her textile work was selected for exhibition in the United Nations\, Geneva\, Switzerland (2016). Swimming Upstream tells her personal journey with an injury that placed her temporarily in a wheel chair\, to finally finding the courage to start creating art and living life again.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Siebren Versteeg: LIKE II (2016)
DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Wald in support of her book The Nature of California: Race\, Citizenship\, and Farming since the Dust Bowl.\n\nThe California farmlands have long served as a popular symbol of America's natural abundance and endless opportunity. Yet\, from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and Carlos Bulosan's America Is in the Heart to Helena Maria Viramontes's Under the Feet of Jesus\, many novels\, plays\, movies\, and songs have dramatized the brutality and hardships of working in the California fields. Little scholarship has focused on what these cultural productions tell us about who belongs in America\, and in what ways they are allowed to belong. In The Nature of California\, Sarah Wald analyzes this legacy and its consequences by examining the paradoxical representations of California farmers and farmworkers from the Dust Bowl migration to present-day movements for food justice and immigrant rights.\n\nAnalyzing fiction\, nonfiction\, news coverage\, activist literature\, memoirs\, and more\, Wald gives us a new way of thinking through questions of national belonging by probing the relationships among race\, labor\, and landownership. Bringing together ecocriticism and critical race theory\, she pays special attention to marginalized groups\, examining how Japanese American journalists\, Filipino workers\, United Farm Workers members\, and contemporary immigrants-rights activists\, among others\, pushed back against the standard narratives of landownership and citizenship.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction.
