His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. It is also called “Ikebana.” Flowers and plants in ikebana represent human life and express its beauty and venerableness. Ikebana is popular among many generations as enrichment lessons. There are more than 2000 schools (styles) of Ikebana today in Japan. We’ll invite a sensei whose style is Mishoryu-Soke (未生流総家). This school has four main forms of arrangement: Traditional\, Arrangement\, Moribana\, and San’ya-so. There also are many patterns in each four forms. Moribana Form will be demonstrated on June 19th. This style configures flowers using the pin holder\, called Kenzan.\n\nChado (茶道) as known as the Japanese tea ceremony is one of the traditional cultural activities including preparation and presentation of matcha. Matcha is powdered green tea and the tea made of it. Chado is developed in 16th century by Sen-no Rikyu and has entertained people since then. The spirit of Chado is described by 和敬清寂 (Wa Kei Sei Jaku\; harmony\, respect\, purity and tranquility). The host serves a bowl of matcha sincerely and the guest takes it with thankfulness. There are several manners to serve and drink the tea\, but don’t worry! We are going to demonstrate simplified tea preparation and show you how to taste it. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. He was born in Providence\, Rhode Island the year Roy Brown recorded “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and that song must have gotten into Steve’s soul. He grew up on the sounds of Elvis Presley\, Buddy Holly\, and Eddie Cochran on the family phonograph and Carl Henry’s local radio show\, which featured the music of blues legends such as Muddy Waters\, Jimmy Reed\, and Count Basie. As a teen Steve discovered a goldmine at Carl Henry’s record store (known as Carl’s Diggins: The Best of the Blues) and quickly became one of its most frequent customers\, buying the 45 records of Muddy\, Little Walter and Jimmy Reed. He got hooked on guitar and harmonica\, and it was in 1970\, that Nardella and his two friends John Nicholas and Fran Christina drove to Michigan for the Ann Arbor Blues Festival. Nardella and Nicholas began performing as a duo and then as a band known as the Boogie Brothers\, along with Christina on drums\, and Sara Brown on bass. They were featured on the ‘72 Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival album on Atlantic\; backing Boogie Woogie Red and Johnny Shines. Steve has continued to play the blues and roots rock & roll with various musicians passing through his band\, and by now he's a legend with a repertoire like few other musicians\, in Michigan or anywhere else. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.
