SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Donita Simpson is a Detroit based photographer who creates images of Detroit area artists in their personal creative environments. The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. The unique compilation belonged to the late Irwin Alterman of West Bloomfield\, and was donated by his widow\, Marilyn McCall Alterman. \n\nPhoto courtesy of Luna Archey

DESCRIPTION:Chicago-based artist Natasha Kohli uses abstract acrylic paintings to convey her messages of positivity and love by pouring that energy into each piece. As a self-taught artist\, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Donita Simpson is a Detroit based photographer who creates images of Detroit area artists in their personal creative environments. She has an M.F.A. in photography from Wayne State University\, and her work is currently on exhibit in The Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. They are captured in an environment that inspires them\, often their home or their studio.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:The Summer 2016 group will include:\n\n1.5 hour sessions with snacks.\n\n8 weeks of sessions.\n\n9-13 year-old (girl and boy) participants.\n\nCost flexibility based on insurance benefits (self-pay is $40/session).\n\nScheduling flexibility since the day and time of the group sessions are determined by interest and the participant’s schedule.\n\nThroughout elementary\, middle\, and junior high school\, social interactions can become increasingly complicated and difficult to manage. Learning to navigate relationships with friends\, classmates\, and family can be even more challenging as girls and boys also begin to explore their identity. The Feelings through Fiction Summer 2016 Group uses a book club format to create a safe space for participants to discuss ideas and feelings common to kids their age. DESCRIPTION:2016 Harry Hann All-Camp Lecture in Ornithology\n\nThis presentation will follow a story line that begins just north of Pellston at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula back in 1989. The discovery of how to reliably catch a loon opened up the ability to use the species as an important indicator of mercury in lake environments for determining ecological and human health assessments. \n\nThe study of loons and other wildlife as indicators over a 22 year period provided the knowledge platform for bringing the science of mercury in the environment to the global stage for an international mercury treaty. The United Nations Environment Programme facilitated the creation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Dr. David Evers was selected as a scientist to represent the United States at the convention and help participating delegates from 140+ countries better understand environmental patterns in fish\, wildlife and people.\n\nDr. David Evers is an ecotoxicologist with 26 years’ field experience with contaminant monitoring research\, especially those focused on mercury and oil spills. He is Executive Director\, Founder and Chief Scientist of Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI). Evers has been on many international project teams through the United Nations Environment Programme\, United Nations Industrial Development Organization\, the International Council on Mercury as a Global Pollutant and conservation NGOs. He is a graduate of Michigan State Unviersity (B.S.)\, Western Michigan University (M.S.) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.).\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Siebren Versteeg: LIKE II (2016)
DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:2016 Harry Hann Research Seminar in Ornithology\n\nDr. David Evers will provide details about known global sources of mercury\, the patterns of mercury in biota\, and how countries may decide about how to monitor mercury in biota.  He will share a description of proposed metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of the Treaty that are based on a recently published manuscript in the journal Science of the Total Environment.\n\nDr. David Evers is an ecotoxicologist with 26 years’ field experience with contaminant monitoring research\, especially those focused on mercury and oil spills. He is Executive Director\, Founder and Chief Scientist of Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI). Evers has been on many international project teams through the United Nations Environment Programme\, United Nations Industrial Development Organization\, the International Council on Mercury as a Global Pollutant and conservation NGOs. DESCRIPTION:Matt the Electrician indeed used to be an electrician\, but now he's focusing instead on a music career that has spanned the course of two decades\, a dozen records\, and literally thousands of shows. It’s folk music for a modern age\, rooted in lyrics that focus on the realities and challenges of the 21st century as opposed to\, say\, the old-school thrill of hopping trains.“I don’t generally write mining disaster songs\,”he explains. “I tend to write about things that have happened to me and my family. Songs about the small things in life\, which\, to me\, are really the big things.” Throughout 2015 and 2016\, he’s releasing a string of 7-inch vinyl singles. Years before moving to Texas and launching his career as a boundary-breaking\, working-class folk musician\, Matt Sever grew up on the West Coast. His parents\, a union carpenter and a seamstress\, played John Denver and Pete Seeger songs on the family record player\, and Matt spent his earliest years surrounded by the things that would later fill his own music: acoustic guitars\, timeless melodies\, lyrics that celebrated the joys and heartaches of everyday life\, and above all else a strong work ethic.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. The unique compilation belonged to the late Irwin Alterman of West Bloomfield\, and was donated by his widow\, Marilyn McCall Alterman. \n\nPhoto courtesy of Luna Archey

DESCRIPTION:Chicago-based artist Natasha Kohli uses abstract acrylic paintings to convey her messages of positivity and love by pouring that energy into each piece. As a self-taught artist\, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. DESCRIPTION:Victoria Veedell creates atmospheric landscape paintings in oil on canvas\, capturing the fleeting moments of light in nature. Veedell lives and works in San Francisco\, and she is inspired by her global travels to places as far away as India and as near as Napa Valley\, California. Travel is an important component of her work as it allows her to observe and compare gradients of color\, light and atmosphere in different geographic locations.

DESCRIPTION:Creative Seasons is a small yet vibrant group of non-traditional quilters from Southeast Michigan that meets monthly. The group’s purpose is to share knowledge\, techniques and work collaboratively on projects and exhibits as decided by the group. The definition of a portal is a door\, means of entrance\, gateway\, approach or architectural composition surrounding an opening. The group chose to interpret this theme with a broad variety of art quilts incorporating hand-dyed and painted fabrics as well as a variety of surface embellishments.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Other:Dissertation Defense: Connectivity\, Organization\, and Network Coordination of the Drosophila Central Circadian Clock
DESCRIPTION:Daily rhythms in behavior and physiology are orchestrated by a network of circadian clock neurons. Neuronal connections within this network produce coherence and robustness in circadian timekeeping that are uncharacteristic of rhythms driven by isolated neurons or non-neuronal clocks. Using Drosophila as a simple yet conserved model system\, my thesis research aims to understand how clock neurons are physiologically connected and how their molecular oscillations are coordinated to produce coherent circadian rhythms.\nI have developed an experimental approach to address functional connectivity in the fly brain that combines chemogenetic excitation of neurons of interest with simultaneous monitoring of potential postsynaptic physiology with genetically encoded fluorescent sensors. Using this method\, I have mapped connections in the clock network mediated by the critical neuropeptide Pigment-Dispersing Factor. In addition\, I have performed ex vivo patch-clamp recordings of the fly clock neurons and provided the first electrophysiological characterization of the dorsal lateral neurons (LNds)\, which constitute the so-called Evening Oscillator of the clock network. I find that the neuronal activity of LNds is modulated by multiple fast neurotransmitters\, and that a group of dorsal clock neurons provides inhibitory synaptic input onto the LNds. Lastly\, using behavioral approaches\, I find that while GABAergic inhibition of the clock network functions to promote nighttime sleep\, glutamatergic inhibition of the clock network functions to promote wakefulness during the day.\nTo study how the molecular rhythms of clock neurons are coordinated\, I have genetically sped-up or slowed-down the molecular clock in specific subsets of clock neurons and determined how such manipulations affect the molecular oscillations in un-manipulated clock neuron classes and sleep/activity rhythms. I find that the various groups of clock neurons do not display uniform modes of coupling. Rather\, they display unique and complex coupling relationships that vary from group to group. In contrast to the widely accepted “Master Pacemaker” model that had dominated the field for more than a decade\, my results show that the clock network consists of multiple independent oscillators\, each of which is unified by its neuropeptide output. Finally\, I find that robust circadian rhythms require coherence of molecular clocks across a much larger proportion of the clock network than previously thought.\nCollectively\, my thesis research greatly advances our understanding of how the circadian clock neuron network is wired and how it is organized and coordinated.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico's Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences including\, among others\, Modernism and Surrealism. Although not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood. One of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The photographs in the exhibition\, from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist using motifs drawn from Mexican religious and indigenous works as well as plant forms\, in a Modernist approach to image making. UMMA docents will discuss these motifs and the artist’s use of light as a metaphor and revealer of life\, animating even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.

DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

As a self-taught artist\, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Donita Simpson is a Detroit based photographer who creates images of Detroit area artists in their personal creative environments. She has an M.F.A. in photography from Wayne State University\, and her work is currently on exhibit in The Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. They are captured in an environment that inspires them\, often their home or their studio.

Veedell lives and works in San Francisco\, and she is inspired by her global travels to places as far away as India and as near as Napa Valley\, California. Travel is an important component of her work as it allows her to observe and compare gradients of color\, light and atmosphere in different geographic locations.

DESCRIPTION:Creative Seasons is a small yet vibrant group of non-traditional quilters from Southeast Michigan that meets monthly. The group’s purpose is to share knowledge\, techniques and work collaboratively on projects and exhibits as decided by the group. The definition of a portal is a door\, means of entrance\, gateway\, approach or architectural composition surrounding an opening. The group chose to interpret this theme with a broad variety of art quilts incorporating hand-dyed and painted fabrics as well as a variety of surface embellishments.

Working together they have developed a wonderful exchange and interplay of ideas\, concepts and techniques\, involving meticulous fabrication with many different materials and processes. Their influences are varied and vast: modern art\, scientific phenomena\, 20th century artifacts\, nature and film play upon their ideas and how they manifest them into jewelry objects. Lisa & Scott Cylinder work to create art that stimulates conversation and curiosity.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

It symbolizes a remarkable turning point: slavery’s extinction in the United States became possible and indeed highly likely. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.
