DESCRIPTION:Chicago-based artist Natasha Kohli uses abstract acrylic paintings to convey her messages of positivity and love by pouring that energy into each piece. As a self-taught artist\, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. The unique compilation belonged to the late Irwin Alterman of West Bloomfield\, and was donated by his widow\, Marilyn McCall Alterman. \n\nPhoto courtesy of Luna Archey

DESCRIPTION:Chicago-based artist Natasha Kohli uses abstract acrylic paintings to convey her messages of positivity and love by pouring that energy into each piece. As a self-taught artist\, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Donita Simpson is a Detroit based photographer who creates images of Detroit area artists in their personal creative environments. The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Other:Dissertation Defense: A role for Protein Phosphatase 2A  in the  proliferation-quiescence  decision
DESCRIPTION:Metazoans precisely control the number of cell divisions to maintain homeostasis during organ or tissue development throughout their lifetime. In adult metazoans\, most differentiated cells have completed proliferation and lie in a quiescent state\, also termed cell cycle exit. The decision to proliferate or enter quiescence is essential during development and its dysregulation may lead to defects in organogenesis\, wounding healing and regeneration as well as tumor formation. However\, at what stage of the cell cycle the decision occurs and what molecular mechanisms control this decision remain controversial. \nIn my thesis work\, I have revealed a novel role for Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) complex in promoting the transition to quiescence during tissue development in vivo. Using Drosophila eyes and wings as a model\, I found that compromising PP2A activity during the final cell cycle prior to a developmentally controlled cell cycle exit leads to extra cell divisions and delayed entry into quiescence. By systematically testing the regulatory subunits of Drosophila PP2A\, I discovered that the B56 family member widerborst (wdb) is required for the role of PP2A in promoting the transition to quiescence. In particular\, PP2A/B56 complex targets cyclin-dependent kinase 2 several hours after mitosis to promote cells entry into quiescence\, indicating when the decision occurs and how PP2A impacts the decision.\nIn the other half of my thesis work\, I investigated the dynamic features of the proliferation-quiescence transition with the application of a novel fluorescent cell cycle reporter and time-lapse\, live-cell imaging in a mammalian cell population. By monitoring the proliferation-quiescence transition\, I discovered that the quiescent state is quite heterogeneous. I found that mammalian cells can enter into either a transient or long quiescent state after mitosis\, prior to the next round of cell cycle even under conditions of abundant nutrients. Notably\, I discovered that two sister cells born of the same mitosis often make heterogeneous cell cycle decisions\, with one cell entering long-term quiescence while the other re-enters the cell cycle for the next round of division. Consistent with my work in Drosophila model\, PP2A in mammals plays a conserved role in promoting the entry into quiescence. This novel role of PP2A in modulation of the proliferation-quiescence decision may contribute to its long-known tumor suppressor role and impact the emerging problem of tumor dormancy.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:The Summer 2016 group will include:\n\n1.5 hour sessions with snacks.\n\n8 weeks of sessions.\n\n9-13 year-old (girl and boy) participants.\n\nCost flexibility based on insurance benefits (self-pay is $40/session).\n\nScheduling flexibility since the day and time of the group sessions are determined by interest and the participant’s schedule.\n\nThroughout elementary\, middle\, and junior high school\, social interactions can become increasingly complicated and difficult to manage. Learning to navigate relationships with friends\, classmates\, and family can be even more challenging as girls and boys also begin to explore their identity. The Feelings through Fiction Summer 2016 Group uses a book club format to create a safe space for participants to discuss ideas and feelings common to kids their age. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ecological homogenization of urban America
DESCRIPTION:2016 Ralph E. Bennett All-Camp Lecture in Mycology and Plant Biology\n\nUrban\, suburban and exurban ecosystems are important and increasing in the U.S. Homogenization\, where neighborhoods in very different parts of the country have similar patterns of land use and aquatic features involves ecological structure and functions relevant to soil and ecosystem carbon and nitrogen dynamics\, with continental scale implications. Using datasets ranging from household surveys to regional-scale remote sensing across six metropolitan statistical areas\, Dr. Peter Groffman is determining how household characteristics correlate with landscaping decisions\, land management practices and ecological structure and functions at local\, regional and continental scales.\n\nWatersheds are a natural (and well-used) physical unit for bio-geo-chemical research and can also function as a focus for human-environment interactions.  Suburban watershed input/output budgets for nitrogen (N) have shown surprisingly high retention which has led to detailed analysis of sources and sinks in these watersheds.  Home lawns have more complex coupled carbon and N dynamics than previously thought. And riparian zones have turned out be N sources rather than sinks in urban watersheds. Geomorphic stream restoration can increase in-stream retention by creating features with high denitrification potential. Considering the “human element” in these biogeochemical source and sink processes is critical to improving the environmental performance of urban and suburban ecosystems.  \n\nDr. Peter M. Groffman is a Professor at the City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center and Brooklyn College. His research interests are in ecosystem\, soil\, landscape and microbial ecology\, with a focus on carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Groffman is chair of the Executive Board of the U.S. National Science Foundation funded Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network Science Council and a participant in LTER projects in Baltimore (urban) and New Hampshire (northern hardwood forests). Groffman was a Convening Lead Author for the 2013 U.S. National Climate Assessment Chapter on Ecosystems\, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and a lead author for the Second (Wetlands) and Third (North America) Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Program on Climate Change (IPCC). \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. The unique compilation belonged to the late Irwin Alterman of West Bloomfield\, and was donated by his widow\, Marilyn McCall Alterman. \n\nPhoto courtesy of Luna Archey

Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

The definition of a portal is a door\, means of entrance\, gateway\, approach or architectural composition surrounding an opening. DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:First Ascent Trips are designed just for incoming UM freshmen!\n\nCome hike the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, one of the most beautiful places Michigan has to offer! The park was established for its outstanding natural features\, including dunes\, beaches\, forests\, and ancient glacial phenomena on the shores of Lake Michigan. We'll spend the first night camping right inside the park before hitting the trail in the morning. We'll cover around 8 miles of trail and set up camp\, spending the evening exploring the dunes\, taking in the sights\, cooking a spectacular dinner\, and hanging out around a roaring fire. After hiking out to the vans\, we'll head to the solitude of Wilderness State Park on the shore of a Great Lake and spend the following day on the historic grounds of Mackinac Island. We'll explore the beautiful island by bike\, the preferred method of transportation on car-free Mackinac. This will truly be a trip to remember in places that beg to be returned to again and again.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Terrestrial Denitrification: A tale of misery\, woe and the frontiers of environmental science
DESCRIPTION:2016 Ralph E. Bennett Research Seminar in Mycology and Plant Biology\n\nUnderstanding the nitrogen cycle at landscape\, regional and global scales is a great current challenge in environmental science. Large amounts of “missing nitrogen” have complicated efforts to address the effects of excess reactive nitrogen pollution on tropospheric ozone levels\, coastal eutrophication and drinking water quality\, and to determine “critical loads” for atmospheric nitrogen deposition. Uncertainty about nitrogen balances has led to increased interest in nitrogen gas fluxes as a fate of excess nitrogen.\n\nDenitrification\, the conversion of reactive nitrogen oxides into nitrogen gases\, is a challenging process to study in terrestrial ecosystems. This process is difficult to quantify. A particular challenge is that small areas (hotspots) and brief periods (hot moments) account for a high percentage of nitrogen gas flux activity.  \n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Peter Groffman will review recent advances in measuring denitrification at multiple scales in forest\, wetland and urban ecosystems. The challenges in denitrification studies -- methodological problems\, multi-factor variability\, and scaling -- are representative of many frontier topics in Environmental Science. Groffman argues that the approaches and solutions that we have developed for denitrification have relevance to many current topics in this discipline.\n\nDr. Peter M. Groffman is a Professor at the City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center and Brooklyn College. His research interests are in ecosystem\, soil\, landscape and microbial ecology\, with a focus on carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Groffman is chair of the Executive Board of the U.S. National Science Foundation funded Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network Science Council and a participant in LTER projects in Baltimore (urban) and New Hampshire (northern hardwood forests). Groffman was a Convening Lead Author for the 2013 U.S. National Climate Assessment Chapter on Ecosystems\, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and a lead author for the Second (Wetlands) and Third (North America) Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Program on Climate Change (IPCC). \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. The unique compilation belonged to the late Irwin Alterman of West Bloomfield\, and was donated by his widow\, Marilyn McCall Alterman. \n\nPhoto courtesy of Luna Archey

Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work\, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Donita Simpson is a Detroit based photographer who creates images of Detroit area artists in their personal creative environments. She has an M.F.A. in photography from Wayne State University\, and her work is currently on exhibit in The Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The Detroit Area Artists Portrait Project contains images of artists that have been making art in and around the city for over 20 years. They are captured in an environment that inspires them\, often their home or their studio.

DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:The Ann Arbor Storytellers’ Guild is open to all who love stories\, whether as tellers or listeners. Founded in 1998\, this dynamic group exists to promote and further the traditional art of storytelling and to encourage and mentor storytellers of all skill levels. Guild meetings are open to the public. They are lively\, fun events where attendees hone the craft of storytelling\, practice performing for an audience\, or just sit back and listen. Storytelling is an art form. This program will focus on personal stories. We will give the audience ways to observe and listen to stories that will assist them in understanding what makes a story successful. There will be a short introductory lecture. Then\, five experienced storytellers will demonstrate various styles and techniques by telling some of their own unique personal stories:  Beverly Black\, Steve Daut\, Lyn Davidge\, Jill Halpern and Laura Lee Hayes. \nThis lecture is for adults 50+.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of co-learning with Stephen Henderson and the Place-Making Research Cluster.  \n \nWe will begin the evening with a short group study on the topic of making\, unmaking and remaking place in Detroit\, through excerpts from the work of local Detroit writers\, facilitated by the  City Study Stewards.  Stephen Henderson will share reflective remarks on his own experience with place-making in Detroit through his Tuxedo Project\, and as a journalist for the Detroit Free Press.  We will then move into a guided conversation on the topic between Stephen and the students of the Place-Making research cluster\, as well as the community.\n\nStephen Henderson is editorial page editor and a columnist at the Detroit Free Press and a 2014 Pulitzer Prize Winner for his coverage of his native city\, Detroit. In 2012\, he returned back to his recently abandoned childhood home at 7124 Tuxedo and decided not to leave.  This choice led to the creation of the Tuxedo Project\, a partnership with Marygrove College and the Knight Foundation\, to restore Stephen’s home and to turn it into a writer’s residency\, which would benefit the students of Marygrove and the surrounding community.  In conversation with the City Study Stewards from the Place-Making research cluster\, Stephen will share his own reflections on making\, unmaking and remaking place in post-bankruptcy Detroit\, as well as the unique features of and vision for transforming a home into a place of learning.\n\nThe Place-Making Research Cluster at the Detroit City Study explores the diverse elements that make\, unmake and remake place.  Students in this cluster take up this question through a variety of disciplines and entry points\, including social space\, material space\, visual space and mental space\, as well as the role of art\, community\, the built environment\, deconstruction\, affect and power and how they intersect within place.  The cluster is motivated by the question\, what constitutes “place” and what does it actually hold together?  The Place-Making Research Cluster is made up of four PhD students\, Joseph Richard DeLeon\, Samantha Hobson\, Michael RJ Koscielniak\, and Shebani Rao. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: The Many Faces and Figures of the Four Sons in the Passover Haggadah
DESCRIPTION:The Four Sons of the Passover Haggadah can now be viewed in their many versions at a unique exhibit at the Jean & Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The exhibit\, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection\, will be on display through July.  It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes\, ancient and modern\, and in a number of different languages.\n\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center\, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1\,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Concrete Ephemera: Street Art Captured
DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade\, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which\, when viewed at a precise angle\, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects\, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit\, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College\, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs\, July 21\, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Creative Seasons is a small yet vibrant group of non-traditional quilters from Southeast Michigan that meets monthly. The group’s purpose is to share knowledge\, techniques and work collaboratively on projects and exhibits as decided by the group. The definition of a portal is a door\, means of entrance\, gateway\, approach or architectural composition surrounding an opening. The group chose to interpret this theme with a broad variety of art quilts incorporating hand-dyed and painted fabrics as well as a variety of surface embellishments.

DESCRIPTION:Rural Pennsylvania artists Lisa & Scott Cylinder have been husband and wife collaborators in Chickenscratch Art Jewelry since 1988\, having met at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Working together they have developed a wonderful exchange and interplay of ideas\, concepts and techniques\, involving meticulous fabrication with many different materials and processes. Their influences are varied and vast: modern art\, scientific phenomena\, 20th century artifacts\, nature and film play upon their ideas and how they manifest them into jewelry objects. Lisa & Scott Cylinder work to create art that stimulates conversation and curiosity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Whimsical World of Bechler Pottery
DESCRIPTION:The mixed media work of Stacey and Corey Bechler is whimsical\, colorful and fun. They use popular icons such as fish\, birds\, dogs and landscapes as their subjects\, and they make them look whimsical with elaborate colors\, shapes and textures. They work to create a powerful visual contrast within each piece. Using clay and glaze as a base for each of their pieces\, they often add touches of copper\, assorted wires and driftwood found near their beach home.  They live on the shore of Lake Michigan inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

DESCRIPTION:Today the Emancipation Proclamation is one of our nation’s critical documents. It symbolizes a remarkable turning point: slavery’s extinction in the United States became possible and indeed highly likely. Still\, our views of that moment may be as varied as they were 150 years ago.\n\nProclaiming Emancipation explores reflections upon the Proclamation and the meaning of emancipation through the holdings of the William L. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents new and recent work by Los Angeles-based artist Catherine Opie\, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Beginning in 2010\, Opie spent six months taking photographs at the Bel Air\, California\, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011). The exhibition includes fifty works drawn from two series\, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Opie’s lens captures the essence of the Hollywood legend through her personal objects and mementos\, and portrays Taylor’s life experience and eccentricity as an illusory subject\, one that cannot be specifically designated or precisely described. In the artist’s words\, the project is not about the relationship to celebrity but about “the relationship to what is human.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mira Henry: The View Inside
DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

DESCRIPTION:You may have heard and marveled at Mark Lavengood as the dobro player with the fast-rising Michigan bluegrass-and-more band Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys. Now's your chance to hear what he can really do! Mark was born in Grand Rapids in 1984 and was involved in jazz\, percussion groups\, and choirs at Alma College. He honed his skills on the dobro in Michigan's folk and bluegrass communities while working part-time at GR's Founders brewpub. In addition to Lindsay Lou\, he's played with Michael Beauchamp & the Barn Roughs\, Nicholas James Thomasma\, Kung Fu Rodeo\, the Fauxgrass Quartet\, Strings 'n Things. Mark has been influenced on the dobro by oe Wilson & Drew Howard\, Rob Ickes\, Jerry Douglas\, Andy Hall\, Todd Livingston\, Sally Van Meter\, and Mike Witcher\, and he's got some terrific\, clever original tunes If you want to see how strong and original Michigan acoustic music has grown over the last few years\, come on out! Songwriter Ryan Hommel\, whose new album is \"The Optical Shop\,\" opens the show.
