The story goes that sometime in the early 1700s\, a young Danish nobleman by the name of Einar Gyldenstjerne fell in love and married an Elvish woman named Gwyneira (surname unknown) who shared the family recipe for how to create hard-paste porcelain. The first items produced by the company are dated to 1715. Soltis’ porcelain flowers in this tradition are assembled meticulously petal by petal. She studied ceramics at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit\, Michigan and is interested in European history and fiction. He was arrogant\, sugar-fueled and oddly appealing. Being a printmaker\, Short began carving the tale into woodblocks. This picture book exhibit follows the confectionary exploits of Cakeasaurus\, one cake-deprived town\, and one little boy about to turn five. It also shows the evolution of a long-term project\, with print variations and peeks into artistic process. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. The tale that emerges demonstrates the power of music and poetry to spark the social imagination and thus create a sense of shared community.\n\nInspired by the successful defense of Baltimore\, Maryland from British attack in September 1814\, lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key penned his now famous lyric. Rather than extraordinary\, Key’s creative impulse was typical of early America’s broadside ballad tradition in which new words were written to fit well known tunes. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. Davis is Wilbur K. Pierpont Collegiate Professor of Management\, University of Michigan Ross School of Business. His recent book is “The Vanishing American Corporation”. Time Magazine describes him as a pre-eminent scholar on financializations of American corporations and new forms of organizations.\n\nProfessor Davis questions if viable alternatives to shareholder-owned corporations in the U.S exist. The total U.S. companies listed on the stock exchange dropped by more than half between 1997 and 2012. Some have gone bankrupt (GM\, Chrysler\, Eastman Kodak). Others have disappeared entirely (Lehman Brothers\, Bethlehem Steel\, Borders\, Circuit City). This decline in public corporations is one of the root causes of income inequality and social instability. Thriving corporations were once an integral part of building a middle class. They offered lifetime employment\, stable career paths\, health insurance\, and pensions to millions. Businesses replacing\nthem are not the same. Consider that the combined global workforces of prominent technology companies such as Facebook\, LinkedIn\, Yelp\, Zillow\, and others\, now are fewer than those who lost their jobs when Circuit City was liquidated in 2009. The shareholder economy seems to absolve many companies of a sense of obligation to their employees. So what comes next? Will the future increase economic polarization\, or provide a more democratic economy built from grass roots? Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. Brad Maeng DESCRIPTION:Title: On the Advective Component of Active Flux Schemes for Nonlinear Hyperbolic Conservation Laws\n\nA new class of numerical methods called the Active Flux methods is investigated for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The Active Flux methods are designed specifically to address the aspect that most modern compressible flow methods fail to do\; the multidimensionality aspect. The Active Flux methods address the shortcoming by employing a two stage update process. In the first stage\, nonconservative form of the system is introduced to provide the flexibility to pursue distinct numerical approaches for flow processes with differing physics. Because each process is treated separately\, the numerical method can be appropriately formed to reflect each type of physics and to provide maximal stability. The Active Flux method concludes with the conservation update to produce a third-order accurate scheme.\n\nThe advective schemes of Active Flux is founded on the characteristic tracing method\, or semi-Lagrangian method\, which has long been used for developing numerical methods for hyperbolic problems. The first known Active Flux method for advection problems\, Scheme V by van Leer\, is revisited as a part of the development of advection scheme. The details of Scheme V are examined closely\, and new improvements have been made to develop a more general nonlinear multidimensional advection scheme. \n\nA detailed study of the nonlinear system of equations is made possible by the pressureless Euler system\, which is the advective component of the Euler system. It serves as a stepping stone for the Euler system\, and all necessary details of nonlinear system are explored. Lastly\, an extension to the Euler system is presented\, in which a novel nonlinear operator splitting method is introduced to correctly blend the contributions of nonlinear advection and acoustic processes. The Active Flux methods\, as a result\, produce a maximally stable\, third-order accurate method for the multidimensional Euler system.\n\nSome guiding principles of limiting are presented. Because two types of flow feature are kept separate in the numerical approach\, the limiting process must also be kept separate. Advective problems obeying natural bounding principles are treated differently from acoustic problems with no explicit bounding principles. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. In this thesis\, a parallel three-dimensional (3D) crystal plasticity finite element open-source code was developed based on the deal.II finite element framework as part of PRISMS-Plasticity. Rate-independent crystal plasticity was implemented by developing a nonlinear algorithm which enables all the slip systems to lie on or inside the yield surface\, and a consistent tangent modulus ensures convergence for small loading increments. The code demonstrates parallel performance and scaling on large-scale problems running on hundreds of processors.\n\nUsing experimental microstructure images as input\, the code has been used to compute\, validate and investigate response of crystalline aggregates to mechanical loading\; this leads to insights on slip and twin activity. Boundary value problems were set up to compare the displacement and strain fields obtained by Scanning Electron Microscope - surface Digital Image Correlation (DIC) experiments for Magnesium alloy WE-43 T5 and T6 tempers with the crystal plasticity finite element simulations. The results indicate a strong correlation between experiments and crystal plasticity finite element simulations. 3D reconstruction of microstructures is growing to be a major topic of interest in the field of modeling and simulation for comparison with experiments. A generalized inverse Voronoi problem approach is used to construct an approximate Voronoi representation of the surface microstructure by generating a convexified representation of the microstructure. Comparisons are made with surface DIC measurements for random samples of 3D microstructures and they indicate the effect of the underlying microstructure on the surface plastic strain. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.
