DESCRIPTION:What does “civil rights” mean in the Trump era?  How and why is the category evolving? This Teach-Out focuses on the civil rights aspects of two current debates--health care and the President’s seven-country travel ban--looking at politics\, protest\, and law. To understand these better\, you will learn about foundational civil rights history dating back to Reconstruction (after the Civil War). You will also hear the perspectives of scholars in law\, sociology\, and political science\, as well as civil rights advocates\, who will all discuss how civil rights are defended and contested\, often growing and contracting in response to other demands and debates. This Teach-Out ends with a call to action for you: How will you participate as our nation defines our rights?\n\nThe Teach-Out will address the following questions:\n\nCivil Rights generally:\n- What does “civil rights” mean? DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

DESCRIPTION:John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories\, religious spaces\, government facilities\, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Ducks to Dresses: Paper Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

Look for giraffes\, birds\, women of industry\, and a portrait bust of a young Einstein\, a commission made for the Albert Einstein Memorial at the Collège de France in Paris. Light\, a fine art bronze sculptor and park designer\, has garnered prizes in the US and Europe including the Prix de France from the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français\, the largest art show in France. His studio is located in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

DESCRIPTION:Loosely based on the concept of the early 20th century group f64\, the f8collective is composed of female contemporary Chicago photographers who all happen to have strong family ties to Michigan. The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:Students in Lisa Makman’s English 313 course\, Children’s Literature and the Invention of Modern Childhood\, curated this exhibit of classic stories for children. The exhibit focuses on seven classic stories: Aladdin\, Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella\, Hansel and Gretel\, the Little Mermaid\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and Peter Pan. Drawing on the rich collection of children’s literature in the Special Collections Research Center\, the books range from late nineteenth century editions to contemporary pop-up books. By showcasing different takes on each story\, the exhibit explores the variation in how these tales are told and illustrated.

DESCRIPTION:​Quaker Oats forged a new path in the entertainment industry by jointly marketing consumer packaged goods and a major motion picture in 1971\, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. DESCRIPTION:What does “civil rights” mean in the Trump era?  How and why is the category evolving? This Teach-Out focuses on the civil rights aspects of two current debates--health care and the President’s seven-country travel ban--looking at politics\, protest\, and law. To understand these better\, you will learn about foundational civil rights history dating back to Reconstruction (after the Civil War). You will also hear the perspectives of scholars in law\, sociology\, and political science\, as well as civil rights advocates\, who will all discuss how civil rights are defended and contested\, often growing and contracting in response to other demands and debates. DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

DESCRIPTION:John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories\, religious spaces\, government facilities\, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Ducks to Dresses: Paper Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

Light\, a fine art bronze sculptor and park designer\, has garnered prizes in the US and Europe including the Prix de France from the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français\, the largest art show in France. His studio is located in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America\, located on the University of Michigan campus. Nearly 10\,000 blooms appear in shades of white\, pink\, and red at peak. The garden began in 1922 with a donation of peonies from alumnus W.E. Upjohn. Some of the plants are still growing in the same place they were planted nearly 100 years ago. DESCRIPTION:Students in Lisa Makman’s English 313 course\, Children’s Literature and the Invention of Modern Childhood\, curated this exhibit of classic stories for children. The exhibit focuses on seven classic stories: Aladdin\, Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella\, Hansel and Gretel\, the Little Mermaid\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and Peter Pan. Drawing on the rich collection of children’s literature in the Special Collections Research Center\, the books range from late nineteenth century editions to contemporary pop-up books. By showcasing different takes on each story\, the exhibit explores the variation in how these tales are told and illustrated.

DESCRIPTION:​Quaker Oats forged a new path in the entertainment industry by jointly marketing consumer packaged goods and a major motion picture in 1971\, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America\, located on the University of Michigan campus. Nearly 10\,000 blooms appear in shades of white\, pink\, and red at peak. Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. This Teach-Out focuses on the civil rights aspects of two current debates--health care and the President’s seven-country travel ban--looking at politics\, protest\, and law. To understand these better\, you will learn about foundational civil rights history dating back to Reconstruction (after the Civil War). You will also hear the perspectives of scholars in law\, sociology\, and political science\, as well as civil rights advocates\, who will all discuss how civil rights are defended and contested\, often growing and contracting in response to other demands and debates. DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

Light\, a fine art bronze sculptor and park designer\, has garnered prizes in the US and Europe including the Prix de France from the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français\, the largest art show in France. His studio is located in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. DESCRIPTION:The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America\, located on the University of Michigan campus. Nearly 10\,000 blooms appear in shades of white\, pink\, and red at peak. The garden began in 1922 with a donation of peonies from alumnus W.E. Upjohn. Some of the plants are still growing in the same place they were planted nearly 100 years ago. DESCRIPTION:Students in Lisa Makman’s English 313 course\, Children’s Literature and the Invention of Modern Childhood\, curated this exhibit of classic stories for children. The exhibit focuses on seven classic stories: Aladdin\, Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella\, Hansel and Gretel\, the Little Mermaid\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and Peter Pan. Drawing on the rich collection of children’s literature in the Special Collections Research Center\, the books range from late nineteenth century editions to contemporary pop-up books. By showcasing different takes on each story\, the exhibit explores the variation in how these tales are told and illustrated.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Defense: Advances in Constrained Spacecraft Relative Motion Planning
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation considers Spacecraft Relative Motion Planning (SRMP)\, where spacecraft operate in close proximity to obstacles or to each other. SRMP techniques must accommodate non-convex constraints\, be robust to disturbances\, and be implementable on-board spacecraft with limited computational capabilities. Three novel SRMP techniques are developed\, and simulations illustrate implementations of each method. \n\nFirstly\, an invariance-based SRMP technique is proposed. Planned maneuvers transition a spacecraft between specified Natural Motion Trajectories (NMTs) while avoiding obstacles and accommodating control constraints. The method is based on a graph search applied to a “virtual net” with nodes corresponding to NMTs\, and adjacency rules based on safe positively invariant tubes built around each NMT. \n\nSecondly\, a SRMP technique is developed for satellite inspection. An information collection model is developed and used to construct a control law based on the local gradient of the information rate. This control law drives the spacecraft on a path along which the rate of information collection is strictly increasing. \n\nFinally\, a SRMP strategy is proposed to generate a formation containing an arbitrary number of vehicles. This strategy is based on an add-on predictive control mechanism\, known as a Parameter Governor\, which modifies parameters in a nominal closed-loop system to enforce constraints. \n\n\nDissertation Committee Names:\n\nProfessor Ilya V. DESCRIPTION:​Quaker Oats forged a new path in the entertainment industry by jointly marketing consumer packaged goods and a major motion picture in 1971\, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Illuminating Photosynthesis with Two Dimensional Spectroscopy
DESCRIPTION:Photosynthesis is a process vital to life on Earth by which energy from light is converted to chemical energy. Although much is understood about this process\, unanswered questions remain that\, if answered\, could inspire more efficient artificial light harvesting technologies. The technique of two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy has shown promise in addressing some of these questions. In this talk\, I will discuss 2D studies of the Bacterial Reaction Center (BRC)\, a pigment-protein complex that serves as a model system for investigating the initial steps of photosynthesis. By exciting the BRC in the near-IR and detecting the response over a broad portion of the visible spectrum\, we are able to uncover previously obscured coupling between BRC pigments and begin to further elucidate the kinetic pathways of energy transfer and charge separation.\n\nTalks will be given each Wednesday and will be 30 minutes in length\, with time after for questions. Lunch will be served at 11:45 and talks will begin at 12:00. Unless otherwise noted\, they will be held in 340 West Hall.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantitative Biology Seminar | Single Cell Response to Multiple Carbon Sources: A Case Study of Combinatorial Signal Integration
DESCRIPTION:A major determinant of the fitness of biological systems is their ability to integrate multiple cues from the environment and coordinate their response accordingly. Yet\, our understanding of combinatorial integration of multiple inputs and its age dependence is still limited. One of the well-studied examples of such regulation is catabolite repression - a phenomenon where preferred carbon source (e.g.\, glucose) represses the pathway required for the consumption of alternative carbon sources (e.g.\, galactose). As a model system\, we study how yeast response to hundreds of environments with different carbon sources as a function of time and age. We found that\, in contrast to the textbook view\, instead of merely inhibiting galactose utilization when glucose is above a threshold concentration\, individual cells respond to the ratio of glucose and galactose\, and based on this ratio determine whether to induce genes involved in galactose metabolism. We investigate the genetic architectures that can result in a ratio sensing and derive the conditions in which the optimal switching strategy involves preparation and when it is changed from threshold-sensing to ratio-sensing. We characterize the ability of cells to respond to changes in carbon source as a function of age and show that there is a non-trivial relation between mortality rate and failure rate.

They focus on the ways nutritional quality and defensive chemistry of plants change under elevated CO2\, and how such changes affect the growth\, survivorship and behavior of insect herbivores and parasitoids. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 to include higher trophic levels. This work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.\n\nDr. Karowe will focus his all-camp lectures\, offered on both May 30th and June 28th\, on the urgent climate change challenges facing the Great Lakes Region\, and will offer an overview of related research at the Biological Station. He will provide a framework by which students\, researchers\, and the public can better understand UMBS's important role in addressing these challenges and protecting our precious natural resources.

Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. Her music weaves together graceful melodies and intricate guitar lines to create honest\, emotional songs. Growing up she was heavily influenced by bluegrass and folk artists\, listening to James Taylor\, Nickel Creek\, and Peter\, Paul & Mary on every family road trip. She studied guitar with local U-M alums Theo Katzman and Chris Dupont\, began writing songs and hasn’t stopped since! She is currently a senior at Huron High School\, where she is involved in choir and theater.

DESCRIPTION:Educators from the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR)\, and Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program created the Virginia Scientists and Educators Alliance (VA SEA)\, a network of graduate students\, teachers\, and informal educators. The project addressed the significant need for teaching resources and professional development that assist teachers in better demonstrating to their students the research practices of scientists\, and how they apply to critical thinking skills. Through this webinar\, we will discuss how educators transferred scientific research into usable lesson plans and outreach activities. We will also discuss ways that environmental educators can mentor K-12 teachers in incorporating research-based lesson plans in the classroom on their own.\n\nSarah Nuss is Education Coordinator at Chesapeake Bay-Virginia National Estuarine Research Reserve. DESCRIPTION:What does “civil rights” mean in the Trump era?  How and why is the category evolving? This Teach-Out focuses on the civil rights aspects of two current debates--health care and the President’s seven-country travel ban--looking at politics\, protest\, and law. To understand these better\, you will learn about foundational civil rights history dating back to Reconstruction (after the Civil War). You will also hear the perspectives of scholars in law\, sociology\, and political science\, as well as civil rights advocates\, who will all discuss how civil rights are defended and contested\, often growing and contracting in response to other demands and debates. DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

DESCRIPTION:John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories\, religious spaces\, government facilities\, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Ducks to Dresses: Paper Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

DESCRIPTION:Figures in Bronze showcases 30 years of Richard Light’s human and animal sculptures\, from 1987 to 2017. Look for giraffes\, birds\, women of industry\, and a portrait bust of a young Einstein\, a commission made for the Albert Einstein Memorial at the Collège de France in Paris. Light\, a fine art bronze sculptor and park designer\, has garnered prizes in the US and Europe including the Prix de France from the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français\, the largest art show in France. His studio is located in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America\, located on the University of Michigan campus. Nearly 10\,000 blooms appear in shades of white\, pink\, and red at peak. SUMMARY:Other:Dissertation Defense: Outlier Identification in Spatio-Temporal Processes
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation answers some of the engineering and statistical challenges arising in spatio-temporal data from Internet traffic\, electricity grids and climate models. It begins with methodological contributions to the problem of anomaly detection in communication networks. Using electricity consumption patterns and grid topology for University of Michigan campus\, the well known spatial prediction method: kriging has been adapted for identification of false data injections into the system.\nEvents like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)\, Botnet/Malware attacks\, Credit card frauds etc. call for methods which can identify unusual behavior in Internet file transfer system. Since storing information on the entire network is infeasible\, hashing techniques which produce summary statistics for the network have been used. Owing to the rather heavy tailed nature of traffic payloads\, extreme value theory (EVT) based techniques have been developed for identification of volumetric attacks from the summary statistics. These methods based on EVT require the estimation of the tail index of a heavy tailed distribution. The traditional estimators (Hill (1975) for the tail index tend to be biased in the presence of outliers. To circumvent this issue\, a trimmed version of the classic Hill estimator has been proposed and studied xiii from a theoretical perspective. For the Pareto domain of attraction\, the optimality and asymptotic normality of the estimator has been  established. Additionally\, a data driven strategy to detect the number of extreme outliers in heavy tailed data has also been presented. The dissertation concludes with the statistical formulation of m-year return levels of extreme climatic events (heat/cold waves). The Generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) serves as good fit for modeling peaks over threshold of a distribution. Allowing the parameters of the GPD to vary as a function of covariates such as time of the year\, El-Ni˜no and location in the US\, extremes of the areal impact of heat waves have been well modeled and inferred.

Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

DESCRIPTION:The largest collection of heirloom peonies in North America\, located on the University of Michigan campus. Nearly 10\,000 blooms appear in shades of white\, pink\, and red at peak. The garden began in 1922 with a donation of peonies from alumnus W.E. Upjohn. Some of the plants are still growing in the same place they were planted nearly 100 years ago. The exhibit focuses on seven classic stories: Aladdin\, Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella\, Hansel and Gretel\, the Little Mermaid\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and Peter Pan. Drawing on the rich collection of children’s literature in the Special Collections Research Center\, the books range from late nineteenth century editions to contemporary pop-up books. By showcasing different takes on each story\, the exhibit explores the variation in how these tales are told and illustrated.

Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. Pickle (CRES CHUANG)\, a night security guard at a bronze statue factory\, and Belly Button (BAMBOO CHEN)\, a recyclables collector\, are best friends. While trying to kill time on the long nights spent in the security room\, Belly Button suggests that they view the dash-camera footage of Pickle's rich boss\, Kevin (LEON DAI). Watching the promiscuous meetings Kevin has with various women\, they witness something they never should have known about. DESCRIPTION:During a distinguished career spanning over four decades\, Paul McCandless has brought the soaring lyricism in his playing and composing to the ensemble sound of two iconic bands of jazz: the original Paul Winter Consort and the relentlessly innovative quartet Oregon. A gifted multi-instrumentalist and composer\, Paul specializes in the oboe\, English horn\, bass clarinet\, soprano and sopranino saxophones and a collection of folk flutes reflecting his grounding in both classical and jazz disciplines. He has performed on more than 200 albums and appeared with such renowned all-star musicians as Pat Metheny\, Jaco Pastorius\, Wynton Marsalis\, Lyle Mays\, Mark Isham\, Steve Reich\, Al Jarreau\, Bruce Hornsby\, Art Lande\, Carla Bley\, Tony Furtado\, the String Cheese Incident\, Nguyen Le\, Proteus 7\, Fred Simon\, and many more. In 1996\, Paul won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. He also won Grammys in 2007 and 2011 with the Paul Winter Consort.
