Miller) is a group of emerging artists who work out of the Clay Work Studio in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The works in this exhibit are an expression of how ceramics mediate our daily life though use. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flora & Fauxna: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

DESCRIPTION:What did a book look like in ancient Rome? How did our ancestors read\, hold and protect their books? How did medieval monks construct the bindings of their manuscripts? These and many other questions will be answered by visiting our exhibit of models recreating ancient and medieval bookbindings. Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. DESCRIPTION:Home and the people who make it have captivated Lori McKenna for years. Over the last three decades\, as she became a wife and mother of five\, she has also emerged as one of the most respected\, prolific singer-songwriters in popular music. Her 2016 release The Bird and the Rifle netted three Grammy nominations\, along with Americana Music Association nods––all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then\, she made history: In 2016\, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 “Humble and Kind” solo. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. Fiddler Brittany Haas was a member of Crooked Still and is a fixture on Chris Thile's \"Live from Here\" radio shows. Bassist Paul Kowert is a longtime member of Punch Brothers and has also been active in classical music. Guitarist Jordan Tice grew up in bluegrass and has played with The Dave Rawlings Music Machine. And mandolinist Dominick Leslie has studied with Thile\, Mike Marshall\, and David Grisman\, and has performed with Noam Pikelny & Friends and other bands. Put it together\, and you have a band that can range across genres and recombine them with ease\, imagination\, and brilliant virtuosity.

DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished Stamps School of Art and Design professor Jim Cogswell has been invited to create a series of public window installations at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist will adhere a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative of reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums’ permanent collections. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community. UMMA docents will introduce the juxtaposed images and help connect the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity.\n\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Jacobson (Chair)\nSarah Buss\nPeter Railton\nChandra Sripada (Cognate: Psychiatry)\n\n            Suppose that you are anxious about some future threat\, sad about some loss or setback\, or angry about some perceived injustice. What should you do while in the grip of this emotion? Should you allow it to guide your thoughts and actions? Or should you regulate this emotion? But if you do choose to regulate\, how should you do so? What sort of emotion regulation techniques should you rely upon? In order to properly answer such questions\, one must address a number of philosophical issues concerning emotional assessment and emotion regulation. You might worry\, for instance\, about what you could lose in regulating your emotion: a fitting response\, a response that might promote your evaluative understanding\, a response that\, although painful\, may help you to feel the importance of some concern\, or to express how much you care about it. You might also wonder whether there are certain forms of emotion regulation that are\, in light of such worries\, more epistemically or morally responsible. In my dissertation\, I examine these issues in order to clarify the value and wisdom of emotion regulation\, in its various forms.\n\n            In Chapter 1\, I investigate the nature of fittingness. When we endorse an emotion as fitting\, what is the nature of this endorsement? I argue against the standard view in the philosophy of emotion\, according to which an emotion is fitting if and only if it correctly represents its target - call this the recognitional view of emotional fittingness. This view fits in nicely with a more general ambition to understand the fittingness of a response in terms of a correct mental representation. However\, I consider two problem cases that lead me to reject this type of view. First\, I argue that in order to be fitting\, emotions must do more than correctly represent their target values. In order to be fitting\, emotions must also correctly mobilize us to respond to these values. Second\, I argue that\, perhaps surprisingly\, even action-responses can be assessed for fittingness. Just like emotions\, beliefs\, and desires\, action-responses can be supported by the wrong kind of reason. But this suggests that the fittingness of a response is not essentially about the correctness of mental representations. Instead\, fittingness is a distinctively narrow form of assessment that can be applied to any response. I suggest that we can understand fittingness either as a normative primitive\, or in terms of reasons.\n\n            In Chapter 2\, I investigate the relationship between emotions\, emotion regulation\, and evaluative understanding. Emotions can enhance our evaluative understanding by mobilizing directed reflection: by worrying about some threat\, ruminating about some loss\, or simmering about some injustice\, we can enhance our understanding of the threat\, loss\, or injustice in question. But notoriously\, emotional reflection can also lead us astray. If our goal is evaluative understanding\, then\, we must make room for emotion regulation. But which forms of emotion regulation should we rely upon\, if our goal is evaluative understanding? In this chapter\, I distinguish between engaged forms of emotion regulation\, which keep us engaged with our emotional concern (e.g. certain forms of reappraisal)\, and disengaging forms of emotion regulation\, which regulate emotional experience by leading us to direct attention away from the emotional concern in question (e.g. many forms of meditation). I argue that both forms of emotion regulation are vital for the enhancement of evaluative understanding\, and I propose a practical model that can help us to decide when to rely on engaging forms of emotion regulation and when to rely on disengaging forms of emotion regulation\, if our goal is evaluative understanding.\n\n            In Chapter 3\, I investigate the final value of painful negative emotions. A number of philosophers argue that painful negative emotions\, when fitting\, possess a distinctive final value\, for epistemic or moral reasons\, that calmer mental states cannot possess. For example\, it is argued that only by being angry at injustice\, only by grieving over significant losses\, and only by feeling appropriately guilty about personal wrongdoing can we fully appreciate the relevant concerns (injustice\, loss\, and personal wrongdoing)\, or fully demonstrate that we care about them. Call this the distinctive final value thesis (DFV). In this chapter\, I argue that DFV is false\, though I also explain why we might nevertheless find it difficult to resist. Now\, I do not deny that painful negative emotions\, when fitting\, possess final value for epistemic or moral reasons. But I argue that this value is not distinctive\; calmer mental states can possess the very same final value. The outcome of this debate has important practical implications for emotion regulation. If DFV is true\, then we always have at least a pro tanto reason not to regulate our painful\, yet fitting negative emotions. If such reasons are at all weighty\, then it may be that we ought to regulate our emotions far less often than we might have thought. By contrast\, if DFV is false\, then an important normative obstacle for emotion regulation is removed\, and the way we think about our emotions may have to change.\n\n            I conclude the dissertation by briefly discussing the implications these chapters have for when and how we should regulate our emotions. I then briefly describe the structure of a practical\, normative model for emotion regulation that is informed by these considerations. This model will emphasize the importance of emotion regulation for 1) enhancing our evaluative understanding and 2) helping us to act in accordance with our understanding.

DESCRIPTION:Although The Young Dubliners' sound is most commonly called Celtic Rock\, that label\, as labels can often be\, is misleading. The Irish influence is there\, certainly\, but it's not the only influence heard on their albums\, or in live shows. After all\, several of the band members have no Irish roots of any kind. \"That was always the idea\,\" vocalist Keith Roberts explains. \"The sound was always intended to be a hybrid because we all come from different backgrounds. Even though two of us are from Ireland\, a lot of the music we listened to growing up wasn't Irish at all\, but when we got here\, we got homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish music. In truth the Celtic riffs can just as easily come from the American band members. Everyone writes now\, so you never know what you'll end up with when we write.\" The Young Dubliners come to The Ark just back from taking their Irish and American sound to Ireland itself.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flora & Fauxna: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

These and many other questions will be answered by visiting our exhibit of models recreating ancient and medieval bookbindings. Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flora & Fauxna: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. DESCRIPTION:A legend of the folk scene\, David Bromberg got his start in the Greenwich Village coffeehouse scene in the mid-1960s. His extraordinary guitar picking and exceptional stylistic range developed over the next decade. David's live shows\, rarer since he took up violin-making full time\, range from Texas swing to bluegrass\, blues\, classical music\, and anything else that might cross his mind. In the words of the New York Times\, he \"has such control of his audience that he can\, at one moment\, hold it in his hand with a tender\, touching yet funny anecdotal song\, and then set it romping and stomping with a raucous bit of raunch. He is electrifying.\" We might add that he picked up on the humor in country and classic blues as well as anyone else in the folk revival scene\, making his shows a great deal of fun. David appears tonight with his band\, with whom he recently recorded a new album\, \"The Blues\, the Whole Blues\, and Nothing But the Blues.\"

DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:Constrained and Spectral-Spatial RF Pulse Design for Magnetic Resonance Imaging\n\n \n\nMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for modern medicine\, providing a non-invasive glimpse inside the human body with excellent soft tissue contrast and no ionizing radiation. The radio frequency (RF) pulse in an MRI acquisition is integral to producing an image and can be tailored to particular applications. This thesis focuses on the design of RF pulses and explores the MRI physics\, convex optimization problems\, and experimental methodologies behind doing so.\n\n \n\nFirst\, we introduce constrained RF pulse design which enables efficient RF pulse design with meaningful\, physical constraints such as peak RF amplitude and integrated RF power. We explore constrained RF pulse design for simultaneous multislice imaging\, a powerful tool for accelerating MRI and combatting notoriously long acquisition times. Compared to a conventional simultaneous multislice pulse designed without constraints\, our constrained pulses achieved lower magnitude normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) for an equivalent RF pulse length\, or alternatively\, the same NRMSE for a shorter pulse length. Constrained RF pulse design forms a basis for the rest of the dissertation.\n\n \n\nSecondly\, we describe a special class of RF pulses\, “prewinding pulses”\, that help correct for intravoxel dephasing due to magnetic field inhomogeneity\, that can lead to signal loss. We propose a spectral-spatial prewinding pulse that leverages a larger effective recovery bandwidth than equivalent\, purely spectral pulses. In an in vivo experiment imaging the brain of a human volunteer\, we designed spectral-spatial pulses with a complex NMRSE of 0.18\, which is significantly improved from the complex NRMSE of 0.54 in the purely spectral pulse for the same experiment.\n\n \n\nFinally\, we consider a slab-selective prewinding pulse\, that extends spectral and spectral-spatial prewinding pulses to a common 3D imaging method. Here we integrate optimal control optimization to further improve the slab-selective spectral pulse design and see an in vivo improvement of excitation NRMSE from 0.40 to 0.37 and a major reduction in mean residual magnetization magnitude after a tip-up pulse from 0.18 to 0.02 when adding optimal control. This method has the potential to connect prewinding pulse design from the MRI physicist engineering workspace to a clinical application.\n\nIn summary\, we show that constrained RF pulse design provides an efficient way of improving MRI in terms of acquisition speed (via multislice imaging) and image quality (via signal recovery).

DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. Using primal foot percussion\, complex\, fuzzed-out\, finger-picked guitar patterns\, warbled harmonicas\, tasty harmonies and a lot of tambourine\, they are able to create something rugged and visceral—a modern interpretation of early blues\, soul\, and rock ‘n’ roll music that harks back to the traditions of hazy front porch folk songs as well as raucous back-alley juke joints. They’ve shared the stage with artists such as Justin Townes Earle\, Robert Earl Keen\, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers\, The David Mayfield Parade\, Matthew Perryman Jones\, Charlie Parr\, Possessed By Paul James\, Shawn Mullins\, and more. They're coming to Michigan with music from their as-yet-untitled but much-awaited third album. Ann Arbor singer-songwriter Olivia Millerschin is special guest.
