SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flora & Fauxna: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:Humans must frequently adapt their posture to prevent loss of balance. Such balance control requires complex\, precisely-timed coordination among sensory input\, neural processing\, and motor output. Despite its importance\, our current understanding of cortical involvement during balance control remains limited by traditional neuroimaging methods\, which are stationary and have poor time resolution. High-density electroencephalography (EEG)\, combined with independent component analysis\, has become a promising tool for recording cortical dynamics during balance perturbations due to its portability and high temporal resolution. Additionally\, recent improvements in immersive virtual reality headsets may provide new rehabilitative paradigms\, but the effects of virtual reality on balance and cortical function remain poorly understood. \n\nIn my first study\, I recorded high-density EEG from healthy\, young adult subjects as they walked along a beam with and without virtual reality high heights exposure. While virtual high heights did induce stress\, the use of virtual reality during the task increased performance errors and EEG measures of cognitive loading compared to real-world viewing without a headset. In my second study\, I collected high-density EEG from healthy young adults as they walked along a treadmill-mounted balance beam to determine the effect of a transient visual perturbation on training in virtual reality. Subjects in the perturbations group improved comparably to those that trained without virtual reality\, indicating that the perturbation helped subjects overcome the negative effects of virtual reality on motor learning. The perturbation primarily elicited a cognitive change. In my third study\, healthy\, young adult EEG was recorded during physical pull and visual rotation perturbations to tandem walking and tandem standing. I found similar electrocortical patterns for both perturbation types\, but different cortical areas were involved for each. In my fourth study\, I used a phantom head to validate EEG connectivity methods based on Granger causality in a real-world environment. In general\, connectivity measures could determine the underlying connections\, but many were susceptible to high-frequency false positives. Using data from my third study\, my fifth study analyzed corticomuscular connectivity patterns following sensorimotor balance perturbations. I found strong occipito-parietal connections regardless of perturbation type\, along with evidence of direct muscular control from the supplementary motor area during the standing perturbation response. \n\nTaken together\, the work presented in this dissertation greatly expands upon the current knowledge of cortical processing during sensorimotor balance perturbations and the effect of such perturbations on short-term motor learning\, providing multiple avenues for future exploration.\n\nCO-CHAIRS:  Dr. Cynthia Chestek and Dr. Daniel P. DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME PhD Defense: Grant Hanada
DESCRIPTION:Mobile brain and body imaging (MoBI) presents new and promising methods for moving traditional research studies out of a controlled laboratory and into the real world. Most current neuroimaging techniques require subjects to be stationary in laboratory settings because of both hardware and software limitations. Recent developments in mobile brain imaging have utilized Electroencephalography (EEG) in conjunction with advanced signal processing techniques such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to overcome these obstacles and study humans doing complex tasks in non-traditional environments. In my first study\, I used high density EEG to examine the cortical dynamics of subjects walking on a split-belt treadmill with legs moving independently of each other at different speeds to investigate how humans adapt to novel perturbations. I found significantly increased low and high frequency spectral power across all sensorimotor and parietal neural sources during split-belt adaptation compared to normal walking\, which provides insight into the brain areas and patterns used to accommodate locomotor adaptation. In my second study I combined multi-modal sensing and biometric devices including EEG\, eye tracking\, heart rate\, accelerometers\, and salivary cortisol into a portable setup that subjects wore indoors on a treadmill using virtual reality as well as outdoors in a public arboretum. Subjects walked for 1 hour each indoors and outdoors while completing a free viewing visual search oddball task in virtual reality and in real life. I reported on the methods for how to set this experiment up\, synchronize all data\, and standardize the data in order to make it usable as an open access dataset that has been made available to the public online. My third study used this data set to examine the P300 event-related potential response during both indoors in virtual reality and outdoors in the arboretum. I found a significantly increased P300 amplitude response across the centro-parietal electrodes that distinguished target flags from distractor flags during visual search for both indoor and outdoor environments. And finally\, for my fourth study I used the same data set to look at the behavioral and neural correlates associated with gait dynamics when subjects walked indoors on a treadmill vs outdoors in variable terrain while also doing the visual search task. DESCRIPTION:Learning Supported Predictive Control of Autonomous Systems\n\nRolf Findeisen\nLaboratory for Systems Theory and Automatic Control Otto-von-Guericke \nUniversity Magdeburg\, Germany\n\nDue to rapid advancements in communication and information technology systems increasingly exchange information with neighboring systems or systems in the cloud. Examples are smart grids\, production systems or multi-modal transportation systems. While the interconnections provide many fascinating possibilities\, they also pose several challenges. What are suitable scalable control and monitoring technologies\, which facilitate autonomy\, plug and play operation while leading to an overall optimal behavior? How can such approaches be combined with methods from machine learning to cope with uncertainties? In the first part of this talk\, we outline how contract based predictive control strategies allow a modular design of complex systems which facilitates hierarchical as well as decentralized autonomous operation of systems. The second part focuses on the fusion of learning approaches and predictive control methods to allow for adaptation in a changing environment. We consider the use of Gaussian Processes to learn model uncertainties and disturbances as well as the use of model predictive control and learning when the controlled system is subject to several possible\, yet unknown modes. The presented methods are underlined by examples from robotics\, autonomous driving\, and air conditioning systems.\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nRolf Findeisen obtained an M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison\, a Diploma in Engineering Cybernetics and Doctorate from the University of Stuttgart. Since 2007 he is heading the Laboratory for Systems Theory and Automatic Control at the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg. Rolf is editor/associated editor of several journals including the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems and he is the international program co-chair of the IFAC World Congress 2020 in Berlin. The research of his group focuses on optimal and predictive control\, control for autonomous systems\, learning and control\, decision-making under uncertainty\, and network controlled systems.  The considered fields of applications span from biotechnology\, process automation\, chemical processes\, automotive applications and robotic\, systems medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

Told in Rudolph’s first-person voice\, it chronicles his career.\n\nQuirky\, off kilter\, stylishly romantic and filled with moments of wry humor\, Alan Rudolph makes movies with dreamy eyed protagonists searching for love in all the wrong places. He often mashes up genres into something new and unique and peppers his films with elements not always beholden to realism. He began his four decade career under the watchful eye of mentor Robert Altman\, but he soon created a body of work that is clearly his own vision.

This summer they’re pausing their careers for 1 year of grass-roots climate advocacy. DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Illuminated Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:Books of hours—custom-made for private devotion in the Christian faith—were a bestseller in medieval Europe. These manuscripts incorporated prayers\, hymns\, biblical stories\, and monthly calendars featuring religious feast days\, which were often supplemented by images painted in exquisite detail. Today\, books of hours are a testament to the visually rich material culture of the Middle Ages. UMMA was recently gifted a bejeweled double-sided calendar leaf for January. Executed on parchment\, the page highlights the material opulence and artistry involved in manuscript illumination. Accompanying the calendar are painted images or miniatures of the labor and characteristic activity of the month\, and Aquarius\, the zodiac sign for January\, embodied by a man collecting water from a stream. The folio’s luminous\, gilded surface\, accentuated by the use of bright colors\, was meant to transport the medieval viewer into a state of spiritual transcendence. \n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Mrs. Carrol Robertsen.

DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. He is recipient of Michigan State University's Michigan Traditional Arts 2018 Heritage Award for leadership and artistry in folk music. In 2003 the State of Michigan Legislature officially designated Neil “Michigan’s Troubadour” in recognition of his life-long commitment to preservation of Great Lakes folk music and culture. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

This series of paintings focuses on the healing that comes from contemplation of bodies of water. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Measured and Simulated Prompt Fission Neutron and Photon Correlations\n\nChair: Prof. Sara Pozzi\n\nAn accurate understanding of fission is critical to characterization of special nuclear material (SNM) for nonproliferation and safeguards applications. Noninvasive and nondestructive techniques rely primarily on highly penetrating and relatively abundant fission emissions. Spontaneously and under particle interrogation\, SNM emits neutrons and photons from fission\, which are characteristic of the fissioning isotopes. Characteristic neutrons and photons are emitted from nuclear fission when a deformed\, neutron-rich nucleus divides into two fragments that then de-excite. During de-excitation\, neutrons are emitted first\, followed by photons\; this process gives rise to correlations. New\, event-by-event\, physics-based models\, CGMF (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and FREYA (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)\, predict correlations in prompt fission emissions. Current safeguards and nonproliferation systems do not utilize angular or multiplicity correlations. Little data exist to validate these models\; correlated quantities have been measured only for 252Cf(sf). My work provides measured correlation data to validate models useful for future system design.\n\nPrevious correlation measurements have been limited by the acquisition challenges of a many-detector array and therefore have used simple detector systems. Additionally\, few detection methods exist that are simultaneously efficient to neutrons and photons. In this work\, I show a many-detector array of pulse-shape-discrimination-capable organic scintillators\, sensitive to both fast neutrons and photons\, to measure correlations in neutron energy\, photon energy\, multiplicity\, and emission angle. This work is achieved through MCNPX-PoliMi simulations and through use of time-synchronized\, high-throughput\, multiple-digitizer acquisition systems. I measured the 240Pu(sf) neutron-neutron angular distribution and found it to be less anisotropic than the 252Cf(sf) neutrons. 240Pu(sf) and 252Cf(sf) neutron-neutron angular distribution simulation results indicate that fission models capture the general trend of neutron anisotropy. 252Cf(sf) and 240Pu(sf) experimental multiplicity results suggest weak neutron-photon competition during fragment de-excitation. The measured correlations were compared with MCNPX-PoliMi simulations using the built-in model and two new event-by- event fission models\, CGMF and FREYA\, which predict correlations in prompt emissions from fission. Simulation results from CGMF and FREYA predict a stronger negative correlation than the experiment result.

DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Mind the Gap: Using the Stellar Mass – Halo Mass Relation to understand Galaxy Growth and Cluster Assembly
DESCRIPTION:A large variance exists in the amplitude of the galaxy cluster Stellar Mass – Halo Mass (SMHM) relation. We find that the magnitude gap between the brightest central galaxy (BCG) and its fourth brightest neighbor accounts for this variance. At fixed halo mass\, clusters with higher magnitude gaps have larger BCG stellar masses. This stratification is also observed in semi-analytic simulations of low-redshift clusters\; this suggests that this stratification results from the hierarchical growth of BCGs and may link assembly of the halo with BCG growth. We quantify the impact of the magnitude gap in the SMHM relation using a multiplicative stretch factor\, which we measure to be significantly non-zero. Including the magnitude gap also significantly reduces the intrinsic scatter in the BCG stellar mass at fixed halo mass. Additionally\, hierarchical growth predicts that at higher redshifts fewer mergers have occurred\, indicating that the BCG’s stellar mass and magnitude gap should decrease with increasing lookback time.  This suggests that the slope and magnitude gap stretch factor may evolve with redshift.  We test this prediction using SDSS-redMaPPer clusters to measure the SMHM relation’s parameters as a function of redshift to z < 0.3.  Contrary to expectations from semi-analytic galaxy evolution models\, we find no evolution. We will discuss our results in the context of hierarchical growth and prior measurements of BCG growth over the redshift range of our sample.\n\nTalks will be given each Wednesday and will be 30 minutes in length\, with time after for questions. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Prison Archivists:  Preserving Confederate Memory in Union Prisons.
DESCRIPTION:As many as 420\,000 men were imprisoned during the American Civil War. Both Union and Confederate prisons were filthy\, mismanaged\, and deadly. Yet they were also places where captured soldiers thought about the meaning of the war and their role in it. This was especially the case in Union prisons for Confederate soldiers. In this talk\, Williams will show how captured prisoners’ dispositions to think and reflect also led them to record their own memories. In the process\, they assembled a vast\, useable archive of Confederate reminiscences that have had a lasting effect on popular understandings of the Civil War to the present day.

DESCRIPTION:Tonight's show brings together two Texas legends and Ark favorites! Joe Ely was born between Route 66 and the Rock Island Line in Amarillo\, Texas\, and he saw Jerry Lee Lewis playing on a flatbed trailer in an Amarillo dust storm when he was six years old. Since then he's had a career than can fairly be called mythic. His songs about the geographic and romantic landscapes of the Lone Star State are pure poetry\, but there's no other Texas songwriter on whom rock has left a stronger mark\, and he's true pioneer of Americana and progressive Texas music. Alejandro Escovedo's life reads like a primer in renewal. He was around at the dawn of American punk rock in his band the Nuns\, which opened the last Sex Pistols show. His next band\, Rank and File\, marked a key stage in the early evolution of what became known as alternative country. Since then he's been a solo songwriter full of amazing stories\, a full-blast rocker\, and a survivor back from the brink of death.
