DESCRIPTION:Rumi Club at University of Michigan invites you for a weekend with the erudite scholar and author Imam Fode Drame as he expounds upon his new book titled 'The Book of Knowledge' as well as a teaching on the method of sound education based on healing and mercy. \n\nImam Fode Drame is a profound Muslim scholar and a descendent of a noble clan that has represented the Islamic scholarly tradition in the Senegambia region of West Africa for over 1\,100 years. His unique aspect is his original teachings in the field of Qur'anic exegesis. Imam Fode is also an expert in the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)\, the knowledge and practice of spiritual excellence\, Arabic grammar\, and poetry. He is a prolific writer and only a small portion of his 70\,000 page manuscript has been translated to English.

DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

This series of paintings focuses on the healing that comes from contemplation of bodies of water. These and many other questions will be answered by visiting our exhibit of models recreating ancient and medieval bookbindings. Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

DESCRIPTION:Reasoning in the Design of Cyber-Physical Systems\n\nKemper Lewis\nProfessor and Chair\, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering\, University at Buffalo - SUNY\n\nCyber-physical systems and the emerging data analytics supporting their operation are revolutionizing many facets of our lives including business\, transportation\, finance\, defense\, energy\, and manufacturing. Necessary to the success of these complex systems is interdisciplinary design knowledge that integrates quantitative and qualitative methods. In this seminar\, the concept of inference in cyber-physical systems is discussed using methods rooted in the developing science of design. Recent research in cyber-empathic design using embedded product sensors\, coordination of autonomous rescue drones\, and geometric reasoning in additive manufacturing is presented.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nKemper Lewis is Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB). He is also the Director of the Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART) Community of Excellence. His research expertise is in the areas of design analytics\, strategic design\, decision networks\, and complex system tradeoffs. He is a Fellow of ASME\, an Associate Fellow of AIAA\, and his research has resulted in over 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers\, and over $18M in research funding from NSF\, NASA\, NIH\, DoD\, ONR\, and private industry.

In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\,  political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

This series of paintings focuses on the healing that comes from contemplation of bodies of water. This beautiful element can bring a meditative calm and inner peace\, as one feels a connection to the timeless forces of life. VanVoorhis is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

Bequeathed by scholar conservator Julia Miller\, this extraordinary teaching collection of bookbinding models includes replicas of Graeco-Roman tablets\, early Coptic books\, as well as medieval European\, Near Eastern\, and Islamic bindings spanning from the 12th to the 17th century.

DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? DESCRIPTION:Proofs are essential to mathematics\, but what about engineering?  In this 1.5-hour seminar\, I will discuss the role of proofs in mathematics and their value in engineering research.  Next\, I will review the basics of logic for writing mathematically precise definitions and theorems.  Finally\, I will describe strategies and techniques for constructing clear\, coherent\, and well-structured proofs.  This seminar is intended for graduate students in engineering whose research involves proofs\, but beginning and advanced graduate students and faculty from all areas are welcome to attend.  The seminar will be informal\, with questions invited throughout.\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nProfessor Bernstein’s interests include identification\, estimation\, and control for aerospace applications. His current research is focused on adaptive control of aircraft and spacecraft. He has coauthored more than 200 journal papers and 400 conference papers\, and he is the author of Scalar\, Vector\, and Matrix Mathematics\, third edition published in 2018.

'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. I will describe how we use the most powerful biological design process\, evolution\, to optimize existing enzymes and invent new ones. In this first lecture\, I will describe different evolutionary strategies that allow us to circumvent our profound ignorance of how sequence encodes function. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\,  political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

VanVoorhis travels to lakes\, rivers and streams to witness the ecology and beauty of natural coastlines of Michigan. She finds inspiration in the writing of naturalists such as Rachel Carson\, and the understanding of the intricate web of all life. This series of paintings focuses on the healing that comes from contemplation of bodies of water. This beautiful element can bring a meditative calm and inner peace\, as one feels a connection to the timeless forces of life. VanVoorhis is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

DESCRIPTION:Liz Anderson (Co-chair)\nPeter Railton (Co-chair)\nAllan Gibbard\nIshani Maitra\nDaniel Little (External member\, UM-Dearborn)\n\nABSTRACT:\nIn The Myth of Ownership\, Liam Murphy and Thomas Nagel argue that achieving fairness in taxation is principally a matter of distributive justice. (1) Distributive justice is understood to be concerned with what is owed to people as a matter of justice. For Nagel and Murphy\, fairness in tax schemes is subsumed to the question of distributive justice: fairly allocated tax liabilities are just those that are compatible with the preferred theory of distributive justice. Subsuming assessments of tax fairness to distributive justice\, however\, overlooks the following possibility: that the question of how we ought to divvy up tax liabilities\, and the burdens associated with running a society more generally\, requires different\, non-distributive considerations of justice. These are considerations of justice that aren’t essentially about distributive justice at all. I argue here that the division of burdens in a society is specifically a matter of contributive justice. Contributive justice is concerned with what people owe as a matter of justice\, rather than what is owed to them. Even a comprehensive specification of distributive justice leaves indeterminate how the burdens of running a society should be divided up. \n\nEach of the chapters in this dissertation develops one part of an account of contributive justice. In the first dissertation chapter\, I make conceptual space for an account of contributive justice. I show that contributive justice is genuinely distinct from both efficiency and distributive justice. I also identify one respect in which principles of contributive justice ought to apply: that of determining the financing and delivery and civic cultural public goods. In the second dissertation chapter\, I argue that a principle of contribution in accordance with ability (a principle of “ability-to-pay”\, or “ability-to-contribute”\, for short) stands out as a candidate principle of contributive justice. The version of ability-to-pay that I defend is\, in particular\, a deontic principle of ability-to-pay. I show that a deontic principle of ability-to-pay is more closely allied with a view of society as a cooperative enterprise. In the third dissertation chapter\, contributive justice is used in service of developing an account of contributive legitimacy. Contributive legitimacy gives us a set of conditions under which the state’s use of coercive force to extract tax contributions is legitimate\, and hence justified. Drawing on empirical evidence from the development and fiscal sociology literature\, I show that contributive legitimacy in a state’s tax extraction practices is essential to rule of law\, and the avoidance of kleptocratic authoritarianism. Contributive legitimacy supplements our understanding of conventional notions of political legitimacy and helps us identify possible failures of political legitimacy. These are failures that might be overlooked were we to focus solely on distribution.  \n\n\n(1)  They’re arguably not alone in this conviction. A number of other legal and political theorists—Richard Epstein and Gerald Gaus among them—also believe that the fair allocation of individual tax liabilities is principally a matter of distributive justice. They\, too\, start from a distributive justice framework in order to figure out what a fair allocation of tax liabilities ought to look like.

One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico  to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\,  political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

DESCRIPTION:John Megahan grew up in the Pacific Northwest. The mountains of Idaho\, Oregon and Washington instilled in him a deep love and appreciation for nature. In college he studied art and biology\, and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator for commercial and educational institutions. Since 1996\, he has been a scientific illustrator for the U-M Museum of Zoology. In addition to scientific illustration and painting\, he occasionally teaches at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Oregon\, and illustrates children’s books.

DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, Adnan Charara translates his assembled characters\, from both collage and found object assemblage\, into commanding acrylic paintings. The backgrounds interact with the figures\, who represent history\, identity\, and the struggle for a sense of belonging. They are blueprints for being human: imperfect\, unique and multi-faceted. Charara works in various mediums ranging from drawing\, to jewelry\, to large scale sculpture. He is a Lebanese-American artist with a studio in Detroit.

'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA\, ‘69 and MA\, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community\, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey.
