As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. They offer a variety of medical services and benefits such as short hospital stays\, high patient safety outcomes\, and low costs of care. They also introduce new challenges for appointment planning and scheduling primarily due to the heterogeneity of and variability in patients characteristic\, the existence of multiple competing performance criteria\, and the need to deliver care within a tight time window. Ignoring the variability in patient characteristic when designing appointment schedules may have negative consequences such as patient delays and clinic overtime. Conversely\, accounting for uncertainty in the scheduling decision process has the potential to create more efficient schedules that mitigate these adverse outcomes. However\, many challenges arise when attempting to model and solve appointment scheduling problems accounting for uncertainty. In this talk\, we present novel stochastic mixed-integer programming and distributionally robust optimization models and frameworks to optimize appointment planning and scheduling decisions under uncertainty in the context of three outpatient scheduling problems with broader applications within and outside of healthcare. In each of these three problems\, we focus on efficiently accounting for uncertainty in the scheduling decision process and proposing tractable and implementable appointment scheduling models. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. This question has drawn increased attention in recent years because of the rise of social media\, where news often takes the form of second-or-third-hand retellings of original source material. As such\, it has been widely blamed for the proliferation of of “fake news”. In this research I report the findings of three large-scale experiments on how the substantive characteristics of news changes over multiple waves of written re-summarization by different agents. We offer evidence that when news events are successively re-summarized they are not prone to exaggeration or fabrication of facts\, but rather a unique pattern of distortion that we refer to as disagreeable personalization: as details of the original event vanish\, the vacuum is filled by highly subjective\, personalized interpretations of news that are laced with negatively slanted expressions of opinion. This evolution toward disagreeable personalization is found to be quite robust\, observed even when writers are given the goal to be as accurate as possible when retelling original events. We find that this dynamic arises from a linguistic diffusion process in which injections of opinion by one writer in a chain is mimicked by the next\, with negativity having a greater evolutionary survival value than positivity. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. However\, due to anatomical changes during radiation therapy\, both in the tumor and in the normal tissue\, the delivered radiation dose can deviate from the planned radiation dose. These responses may compromise the delivery of the most effective treatment and lead to an increased risk of complications in normal tissues. The ability to estimate the delivered radiation to the tumor and normal tissues with high accuracy requires modeling the patient response to dose. Modern medical imaging\, such as computed tomography (CT) and medical resonance imaging (MRI)\, provides a method to evaluate spatial and functional changes of the tumor and normal tissue over the course of radiation therapy. A comprehensive evaluation of these changes requires identification of the tumor and normal tissue\, through image segmentation\, and accurate alignment of images\, through image registration. In the head and neck region\, varying angles of neck flexion\, rapid tumor response and weight loss cause early changes in healthy tissue. In the abdominal region\, motion due to breathing and digestion cause changes in the tumor position and normal structures. When the deviations between delivered and planned dose are great enough\, the radiation treatment plan should be reoptimized\, in order to ensure that the tumor is adequately treated and that the normal tissue is maximally avoided. Estimating the delivered dose to sufficient accuracy is therefore an important requirement for effective adaptive replanning. This dissertation work develops different techniques based on biomechanical models of the anatomical changes to improve estimates of delivered dose\, which can ultimately lead to improvements in treatment adaptation strategies as well as a better understanding of toxicity. A series of experiments based on finite element modeling were conducted to model the uncertainties between planned and delivered dose\, as well as the potential impact of modeling on different organ sites. Abdominal normal tissue complication probability models were developed based on estimated delivered dose and their accuracy compared to traditional models based on planned dose. Following this study\, a predictive model was developed for the head and neck site\, in order to find how early in treatment significant deviations in planned and delivered dose could be predicted. After seeing the large potential deviations between planned and delivered dose in the head and neck site a comprehensive study was conducted to model the changes that potentially cause these large deviations. This comprehensive head and neck model was developed in two steps\; first\, the positional changes due to flexion were resolved and second\, the dose response to the parotid glands was modeled using finite element modeling. Each clinical site poses different challenges\, and this dissertation work highlights two areas in which modeling the deviations between planned and delivered dose will improve advanced adaptive radiation therapy. The basic subunit of chromatin is the nucleosome\, which is comprised of a histone protein core\, wrapped by ~147bp of DNA. The N-terminal regions of each of the histones protrude from the wrapped core and are referred to as the histone tails. Histone tails harbor a plethora of post-translational modifications (PTMs) that direct the function of chromatin regulators as they remodel chromatin during development and in response to external factors. Recognition of histone PTMs by these regulatory complexes is mediated through the action of reader sub-domains. The interaction of reader domains with modified histone tails has been extensively studied using peptide fragments of the tails. However\, we have very little knowledge of how these domains associate with the full nucleosome. We are using NMR spectroscopy and complimentary orthogonal techniques to investigate this\, and have found that the conformation of the histone tails in the context of the nucleosome has a dramatic effect on reader domain binding. As a model system\, we are investigating the interaction of the BPTF PHD finger with its known cognate modification\, methylated lysine 4 on histone H3 (H3K4me3). Here\, we show that the conformation adopted by the histone H3 tails within the context of the nucleosome is inhibitory to binding of the BPTF PHD finger to H3K4me3\, as compared to histone peptides. Using NMR spectroscopy and MD simulations\, we find that the H3 tails interact robustly but dynamically with nucleosomal DNA\, and demonstrate that this inhibits PHD finger association. Modifications and mutations of the H3 tail outside the binding region increase the accessibility to PHD finger binding\, indicating that PTM crosstalk can regulate reader domain binding by altering the nucleosome conformation. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. The complete Declaration is comprised of a Preamble and 30 Articles. In honor of the 60th anniversary of this document\, we are exhibiting 14 Articles in the form of illustrated prints by Meredith Stern. These contemporary prints are intended both to make people aware of this rights roadmap and to show its urgent relevance in our contemporary political moment.\n\nMeredith Stern is an artist currently based in Providence\, RI\, and a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to social\, environmental\, and political engagement. Stern created a total of 28 sets of these linocut prints in 2017\, of which one is held in the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center.
