DESCRIPTION:Over the course of Charles L. Gilchrist’s 50+ year career\, he has worked in photography\, graphic design\, print making\, drawing\, mixed media\, painting\, filmmaking\, fabric design and teaching. He is collected by patrons around the globe and is best known for his acrylic painted Mandalas\, totem animals\, and Sacred Geometry workshops on YouTube. At the age of 80\, Gilchrist is still going strong with numerous projects\, the most noted of which is his collaboration with Gabriel J. Cavazos\, founder of ARCOTU (Architecture of the Universe) Bio Design Engineers\, an architectural/engineering firm that bases all their design projects on Sacred Geometry principles.

DESCRIPTION:Established in 1923 through the generosity of U-M Regent William L. Clements\, the Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. It collects\, preserves\, and makes available primary sources about the Americas\, with particular strengths in 18th and 19th century Americana. Drawing upon all four divisions of materials – books\, manuscripts\, maps and graphics – this display presents a small sampling of reproductions of the internationally significant holdings at the Clements and illustrates some topical strengths of the collections. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums\, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.\n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. At the age of 80\, Gilchrist is still going strong with numerous projects\, the most noted of which is his collaboration with Gabriel J. DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

The link will be placed below.\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91278019863\n\nMany diseases and injuries irreparably harm the brain or spinal cord and result in motor paralysis\, widespread sensory deficits\, and pain. Often\, there are no treatments for these injuries\, and therapies revolve around rehabilitation and adapting to the acquired deficits.  In this work\, we investigate brain machine interfaces (BMIs) as a future therapy to restore sensorimotor function\, use BMIs to understand sensorimotor circuits\, and use novel imaging algorithms to assess structural damage of somatosensory inputs into the brain.\n \nBrain-controlled robotic arms have progressed rapidly from the first prototype devices in animals\; however\, these arms are often slow-moving compared to normal hand and arm function. In the first study\, we attempt to restore higher-velocity movements during real-time control of virtual fingers using a novel feedforward neural network algorithm to decode the intended motor movement from the brain. In a non-human primate\, the neural network decoder was compared with a linear decoder\, the ReFIT Kalman filter (RFKF)\, that we believe represents the state-of-the-art in real-time finger decoding. The neural network decoder outperformed RFKF by acquiring more targets at faster velocities. This neural network architecture may also provide a blueprint for additional advances.\n \nSomatosensory feedback from robotic arms is an important step to improve the realism and overall functioning. The use of somatosensory thalamus was investigated as a site of implantation for a sensory prosthesis in subjects undergoing awake deep brain stimulation surgery (DBS). In this study\, electrical stimulation of the thalamus was performed using different stimulation patterns and the evoked sensations were compared. We found that the sensations evoked by bursting (a burst of pulses followed by a rest period) and tonic (regularly repeating pulses) stimulation were often in different anatomic regions and often with differing sensory qualities. These techniques for controlling percept location and quality may be useful in not only in BMI applications but also in DBS therapies to better relieve symptoms and avoid unwanted side effects.\n \nGiven the importance of sensory integration in motor functioning\, the third study investigated the impact of a pharmacological perturbation on somatosensory content in primary motor cortex measured with Utah arrays implanted in two NHPs. Specifically\, during continuous administration of nitrous oxide (N2O)\, somatosensory content was assessed by using the neural activity in primary motor cortex to classify finger brushings with a cotton-tip applicator. N2O degraded but did not eliminate somatosensory content in motor cortex. These findings provide insight into N2O mechanisms and may lead to further study of somatosensory afferents to motor cortex.\n \nA debilitating facial pain syndrome\, called trigeminal neuralgia (TN)\, is thought to be caused by vascular compression of the sensory root that provides somatosensory feedback from the face. In this final study\, magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging was used to assess the structural damage of this sensory root. In a retrospective manner\, we developed and tested an algorithm that predicted the likelihood of pain relief after surgical treatment of TN. This algorithm could help select patients for surgery with the best chance for pain relief.\n \nTogether\, these studies advance BMI technologies that attempt to restore realistic function to those with irreparable damage to sensorimotor pathways. Furthermore\, using BMIs and novel imaging\, this work provides a better understanding of sensorimotor circuits and how sensory pathways can be damaged in disease states.\n \nCo-Chairs: Parag G. He is collected by patrons around the globe and is best known for his acrylic painted Mandalas\, totem animals\, and Sacred Geometry workshops on YouTube. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

He was the first Clinical Director of the UM Addiction Treatment Services (UMATS\, 2006-2010). He completed his doctoral studies at UM in 2009\, with a concentration in bioo-behavioral health. Dr. Strobbe has published nearly 40 peer-reviewed articles\, position papers\, book chapter and other resources related to substance use and addictions nursing. DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums\, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.\n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. DESCRIPTION:Genital evolution in Birds: Losing the penis and winning the Battle.\n\nMost birds do not have a penis\, and most ornithologists have not thought about bird penises much. However\, evolutionarily\, the loss of the penis in birds is an extremely significant event: why lose an organ that seems so handy to get sperm close to female eggs? Dr. Brennan will discuss some hypotheses as to why this loss may have occurred and talk about her work describing variation in the genitalia of avian species that have retained their ancestral penis\, and experimental manipulations that have revealed the surprising role of male-male competition in genital morphology. In addition\, Dr. Brennan will talk about her research on how sexual conflict has driven extreme modifications of the female genital morphology in ducks\, where females suffer great direct and indirect costs from forced copulations and they have evolved complex vaginas that prevent the full eversion of the penis\, and reassert female control over paternity. An evolutionary arms race is playing out in the complex genitalia of waterfowl\, with some species having extremely exaggerated genitalia. One possible resolution of such conflict is disarmament\, and Dr. Brennan will discuss how the avian penis loss may have been driven by female choice for increased sexual autonomy\, giving females the upper hand in the reproductive battle.

DESCRIPTION:Established in 1923 through the generosity of U-M Regent William L. Clements\, the Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. It collects\, preserves\, and makes available primary sources about the Americas\, with particular strengths in 18th and 19th century Americana. Drawing upon all four divisions of materials – books\, manuscripts\, maps and graphics – this display presents a small sampling of reproductions of the internationally significant holdings at the Clements and illustrates some topical strengths of the collections. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

The link will be placed below.\n\nBlueJeans: https://bluejeans.com/863787871\n\nNanomedicine- where a therapeutic is loaded into nanoparticles to increase therapeutic efficiency and improve patient outcomes- has long had the potential to revolutionize medicine. With all of their promise\, nanoparticle carrier technologies have yet to make a significant clinical impact\, emphasizing the need for new technologies and approaches. In this dissertation\, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) co-jetting was used to develop various methods to create novel Synthetic Protein Nanoparticles (SPNPs)\, which were then applied to the delivery of therapeutic enzymes\, and characterized using a microfluidic technique. It was found that SPNPs can be made from various proteins\, such as Human Transferrin\, Hemoglobin\, and others\, and that various macromers can be selected\, such as a stimuli responsive NHS-Ester based macromer that can detect oxidative environments and show signs of degradation within 30 minutes of being taken up by HeLa cells. SPNPs were then loaded with medically relevant enzymes\, such as the antioxidant enzyme catalase. The enzymes showed high activity retention rates\, with catalase SPNPs maintaining up to 82% of their original enzymatic activity. Additionally\, antibody-targeted catalase SPNPs were able to protect up to 80% of REN cells in an inflammatory disease model. Next\, an electrokinetic microfluidic system was adapted for the characterization of SPNPs based on their protein composition and anisotropy\, and was able to differentiate bicompartmental particles made from two different proteins from single compartment SPNPs made of an equivalent isotropic mixture of the same two proteins\, with a voltage difference of 900 V between the two particle types\, in contrast to the 50 V step sizes possible in these systems. Finally\, preliminary work was conducted on using a small targeting molecule\, meta-acetylenbenzylguanidine (MABG)\, for the treatment of neuroblastoma\, and a system for validating MABG targeting in SK-N-BE(2) cells (a neuroblastoma cell line) was developed. Work done in this dissertation presents the development of multifunctional protein nanocarriers and lays the groundwork for the targeted delivery of active therapeutics using these particles.\n\nChair: Dr. Joerg Lahann

DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Gilchrist’s 50+ year career\, he has worked in photography\, graphic design\, print making\, drawing\, mixed media\, painting\, filmmaking\, fabric design and teaching. He is collected by patrons around the globe and is best known for his acrylic painted Mandalas\, totem animals\, and Sacred Geometry workshops on YouTube. At the age of 80\, Gilchrist is still going strong with numerous projects\, the most noted of which is his collaboration with Gabriel J. Cavazos\, founder of ARCOTU (Architecture of the Universe) Bio Design Engineers\, an architectural/engineering firm that bases all their design projects on Sacred Geometry principles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums\, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.\n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums\, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.\n \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Gilchrist’s 50+ year career\, he has worked in photography\, graphic design\, print making\, drawing\, mixed media\, painting\, filmmaking\, fabric design and teaching. He is collected by patrons around the globe and is best known for his acrylic painted Mandalas\, totem animals\, and Sacred Geometry workshops on YouTube. At the age of 80\, Gilchrist is still going strong with numerous projects\, the most noted of which is his collaboration with Gabriel J. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:The Birmingham Society of Women Painters are from the surrounding metro Detroit area. With over 50 members\, they exhibit a diverse approach to painting including watercolor\, oil\, acrylic and mixed mediums. Their subject matter and technique is also quite vast. Abstraction\, realism and even photorealism is all produced by this dynamic organization. As a group they are committed to the highest standard of creative expression\, to furthering the interests and development of individual members through collective activities\, and to maintaining a tradition of promoting art education.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by the International Museum of Dinnerware Design\, Sculptural Dinnerware features a selection of artwork from the museum’s permanent collection. This exhibition features sculptural artwork that will make the viewer stop and look\, including an abstract knife\, fork and spoon set created from clay\; European wire scribble sculpture\; beautiful pouring vessels created by noted designer Russel Wright\; and “Frog Fruit Loops” by California Funk artist David Gilhooly. Visitors can see porcelain plates with Mozart’s “Magic Flute\;” green frogs in faux cereal\; an Art Deco car-shaped teapot from the 1930s\; and Mid-Century Modern luncheon snack sets.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.
