SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Flora Series: Woven Wire Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gouache Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Exhibition:Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay's Archive of Urban Protest
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition Post No Bills: Burhan Doğançay’s Archive of Urban Protest highlights this important Turkish modernist’s exploration of three decades of the American social zeitgeist in works based on the abstract collages of torn posters\, chipped paint\, and graffiti he found on city walls.\n \nDoğançay documented and harnessed the political content of walls in more than 100 cities around the world\, an effort that was progressively recognized throughout his life. His works are in museum collections around the world and have been the focus of major exhibitions at the Pompidou Center\, Paris (1982)\, the State Russian Museum\, St. Petersburg (1992)\, and the Istanbul Modern (2012). Though many of his artworks are located in American university museums\, few exhibitions have explored the shifting trajectories of 20th-century American political discourse expressed in them.\n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Parsonsfield - Ark Family Room Series
DESCRIPTION:Parsonsfield is a four-piece alt/folk band from Massachusetts that infuses a rowdy\, rock 'n' roll spirit into its bluegrass and folk influences\, blowing away any preconception of what you think banjos and mandolins should sound like. They weren't always called Parsonsfield—the band started out as Poor Old Shine. The new name was born of the inspired experiences recording two albums in beautiful\, rural Parsonsfield\, Maine. \"We owe a lot to what happened there\,\" they say. \"It pulled us from being a more traditional string band to something that felt much more uniquely ourselves. It made us the band we are today.\" The joy is palpable when this band takes the stage\, and NPR says they make \"the most jubilant and danceable indie roots music this side of the Carolinas.\" They come to the Family Room with a new album\, \"Happy Hour on the Floor.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:CANCELLED: Rickie Lee Jones - Rescheduled from April 19
DESCRIPTION:Named by VH1 as one of the 30 greatest women in rock (we'd put her in an even smaller group)\, Rickie Lee Jones has been hard to classify ever since she came on the scene with the instant classic \"Chuck E.'s in Love\" in 1979. She's performed straight jazz\, blues\, synth pop\, new wave rock\, pop covers\, trip-hop\, gospel\, ambitious singer-songwriter music\, and more\, putting her unique spin on each style. Each new round of music-making activity by Rickie Lee Jones is different. But a few things remain the same: she's at her best in an intimate space—like The Ark— and her live concerts have almost without exception been unforgettable experiences over her more than 30 years of performing. Rickie Lee Jones comes to Michigan with music from \"Kicks\,\" an upcoming collection presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of pop\, rock\, and jazz from the 1950s through the 1970s.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Trout Fishing in American - Ark Family Room Series
DESCRIPTION:Trout Fishing in America is Keith Grimwood (electric bass/upright bass and\nvocals) and Ezra Idlet (guitar/bouzouki/banjo and vocals). For over 40\nyears\, they have entertained and engaged audiences of all ages with their\nclever lyrics\, genre-defying musical style\, and inimitable stage presence. \nTrout Fishing in America was in the first wave of artist-owned labels (Trout\nRecords) to successfully record and market their music. Drawing inspiration\nfrom childhoods spent listening to top-40 AM radio\, the two songwriters\nseason their music with stylings from rock and roll\, blues\, folk\, country\,\nbluegrass\, funk\, Latin\, and reggae.whatever sound best brings out the flavor\nof their lyrics. Their recordings have garnered three National Indie\nAwards\, multiple Parents Choice and NAPPA Gold awards\, the American Library Award\, as well as four Grammy nominations. In April 2019\, they released their 26th album\, \"Live At The Epic Theater.\" It is not unusual for three or four generations of a family to show up at a Trout performance and this is a point of pride for both Keith and Ezra. It may be impossible to categorize what kind of music they play\, but after attending a Trout show\, you'll know exactly what you've witnessed: two guys who still love what they do and are excited to share it with you.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Safe Reopening Discussion and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As our state and region reopen\, community organizations\, non-profits\, and churches\, as well as for-profit enterprises share a responsibility to exemplify safe behaviors and to develop policies and protocols that ensure the safety of the communities in which they operate. To support community partners as they work towards these goals\, the UM-Detroit Center\, The Ginsberg Center\, and the UM School of Social Work are hosting a safe reopening workshop.\n\nThe discussion and workshop will focus on how organizations and communities can re-open without putting people at increased risk of catching the virus and provide you an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns\, hopes\, and goals. \n\nAmong the topics we will discuss are\n\n- Developing rules and procedures to keep people safe\n- Communicating to your staff and communities\n- Identifying opportunities: how new technologies can help you achieve your goals\n\nPlease\, click the RSVP button in the related links section. As you RSVP\, you can also ask questions or raise concerns in advance of the workshop.\n\nThe workshop will be hosted by Dr. Scott Page from UM Ross\, who created a re-opening toolkit that will be the basis for the workshop. \n\nHere is a link to a recent article by Scott https://hbr.org/2020/07/reopening-the-office-heres-how-to-stymie-transmission-of-covid-19

This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The American National Election Study: History and Insights from Recent Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 12\, 2020\, 11:00 a.m. EDT \nJoin us virtually: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92353673792\n\nWhy does America vote as it does on Election Day? Since 1948\, the American National Election Studies (ANES) has provided data to inform explanations of election outcomes in the United States. The ANES provides survey data from a nationally representative sample of American adults to give researchers a view of the political world through the eyes of ordinary citizens.\n\nIn this ISR Insights talk\, Dr. Vincent Hutchings (Professor\, Department of Political Science\; Research Professor\, Center for Political Studies) will discuss the history of ANES and why it remains an essential resource for the social sciences. He will talk about the study’s approach to data collection and instrumentation in light of the COVID-19 pandemic\, which includes conducting surveys through a combination of Internet\, video\, and telephone interviews. Dr. Hutchings will also highlight politically-relevant results from recent studies\, including attitudes on the Black Lives Matter movement.\n\nThis webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation\, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Reduced Order Models using Graph Theoretic Approaches for Physical Systems
DESCRIPTION:Physical systems are conventionally studied using experiments\, that may be costly\, exceedingly difficult\, or infeasible. Alternatively\, various computational approaches\, have proven rigorous and successful\, but still suffer from being generally resource-intensive and occasionally difficult to interpret. Particularly for classes of systems that can be described by partial differential equations\, such as for example multi-component crystalline solids undergoing mechanical deformations\, and changes in chemical potential\, high-fidelity solutions generally contain up to tens of millions of degrees of freedom. New methods must\, therefore\, be developed that represent this information in a lower-dimensional space\, allowing for more efficient\, and intuitive computations. \n\nIn this talk\, I will be introducing a novel graph-theoretic approach for reduced-order modelling of a wide class of systems\, allowing for more efficient and effective data-driven simulations. Concepts in graph theory will be introduced\, including a rigorous non-local discrete calculus\, and I will describe how states of a system and their relationships can be represented using this formalism. I will then discuss the numerical methods for computing a reduced-order model for quantities of interest and will show some preliminary results\, indicating the validity and possible exciting future applications of this general framework.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cancelled - Brian Vander Ark
DESCRIPTION:Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe\, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit \"The Freshmen.\" In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie \"Rock Star.\" Then he lit out on his own\, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums\, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items)\, Brian has taken up personal themes of family\, love\, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of \"adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power.\" Oh\, and his name means \"of The Ark\" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet\, what are you waiting for?

It is music that reflects history\, social change\, migration\, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse\, direct and powerful.

This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n
