DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan students tell us that making friends and finding community are some of the most rewarding aspects of their time on campus but COVID-19 has made these things more challenging to do. You are invited to join the Community Matters Cohort Program which provides a space for students to meet others and participate in regular social events. Program participants will be matched with a small group of other students who are interested in finding community. Cohort groups will meet weekly for one hour via zoom and will have the opportunity to meet students from other cohorts throughout the Winter semester. \n \nThose interested in participating in the Community Matters Cohort Program should sign up by January 21st\, 2021 at 11:59pm. You are invited to join the Community Matters Cohort Program which provides a space for students to meet others and participate in regular social events. Program participants will be matched with a small group of other students who are interested in finding community. DESCRIPTION:We will discuss Chapter 3: \"Clare's Commonable Plants.\" Kindly RSVP to Sarah Van Cleve (srvc@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.\n\nTheresa Kelley's Clandestine Marriage delves into Romantic representations of botanizing culture\, exploring in particular the role botany played in larger Romantic-era debates about life and the ability to know\, categorize\, and depict its various forms. The chapter we will read focuses on the unsettling perspective brought by John Clare's plant poetry\; often considered a poet of place and of enclosure\, Clare's refusal to use Linnaean plant names is characterized by Kelley as a small act of poetic and quasi-scientific rebellion. Kelley thus links what she calls \"Clare's Commonable Plants\" and his resistance toward what he saw as the authoritarian Linnaean system to a retroactive resistance to the similarly authoritarian system of enclosure and the damage it wrought on rural communities.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Stress and Brain Health from Biology to Social Contex
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Dr. Huda Akil\, and her colleagues have provided the first psychological evidence of endorphins\, and showed that endorphins are activated by stress and inhibit pain. In investigations of the mechanism underlying stress activity in anxiety and depression\, she demonstrated that social defeat in rodents activates unique neural pathways resembling those alerted in human depression. Her team has also focused on the role of specific genes in the pathology of mood disorders.\n\nDr. Huda Akil is a graduate of the University of California\, University of Iowa and the American University of Beirut. She is the Gardner Quarton Distinguished University Professor of Neurosciences at The Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University of Michigan. She has made unique contributions to the understanding of the brain biology of emotions\, including pain\, anxiety\, depression and substance abuse. She is the author of over 500 original scientific papers and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science.\n\nThis is the fifth of ten lectures to be presented once each month from September 2020 through June\,2021. The next lecture will be held February 9\, 2021. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of vaccines to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is being heralded as a success of modern medicine. But vaccines can only curtail pandemics when enough people are willing to use them\, and substantial vaccine hesitancy already exists in many populations. The speed of vaccine production and availability through an emergency use authorization\, coupled with political divisiveness and broad skepticism of scientific claims\, all affect people's perceptions of vaccines and hence threaten our ability to achieve herd immunity. In addition\, a national history of research abuses and health inequities for communities of color influences how the medical community fosters and builds trust with those most in need. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Social Learning in Groups: an Experimental Study
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nA large literature in economics and finance has shown the dangers associated with — and the inefficiencies that arise from — the imitation of others’ actions\, and from herd behavior in particular. We contribute to this literature by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of imitation in repeated social learning environments. We show experimentally that observing the actions of others improves the quality of decisions and leads to higher information aggregation rates\, even in settings where the actions of others do not provide additional information\, beyond the private information available to agents. \nSpecifically\, we conduct a series of controlled laboratory experiments\, in which subjects repeatedly try to estimate an unknown state of nature while observing private information that arrives sequentially\, and\, depending on the treatment\, additional observations of others. There are no direct externalities in this setting\, and each subject is rewarded independently of others for estimating correctly. Between treatments\, we vary the information available to subjects at the time they make their guesses. This simple setting allows us to address two questions. First\, we document whether at all and to what extent people are capable of extracting the information contained in their peers’ private signals by observing their actions\, in a repeated setting. Second\, we study the usefulness of observing other people’s decisions when private signals of others are also available\, and\, thus\, others' actions should be irrelevant.

DESCRIPTION:Join MCSP\, CSP\, and LSWA for a series of conversations addressing the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at this crucial turning point in the history of racism in America. More than fifty years ago\, King made a call for a poor people’s campaign to take up arms against the evils of racism\, poverty\, and militarism. Yet\, King’s expanding and increasingly radical vision for his work is often forgotten\, co-opted by voices that distort his emphasis on love\, compassion\, and nonviolence to serve the status quo. Anti-racist activists who’ve followed King have had to grapple with how to interpret and respond to his legacy. One of them\, the Rev. William Barber relaunched the Poor People’s Campaign in 2018\, adding to King’s list of evils “environmental degradation” and calling for a multiracial coalition of poor people to challenge America’s exploitation of its people and the land.
